Hello Automators. Thanks for tuning in again i'm back with another 2018

smart home year in review, and quite obviously from all the products around

you or around me rather, we're here to talk about the Amazon Echo and their

voice assistant and all of the new products new features new upgrades that

they put out here in 2018 so let's get going now of course with this review of

the year in general at the end what I'm going to give you is a grading for

Amazon in the end as it relates to smart home home automation and in general

automating your life the year for Amazon comes down to just a few incidents or

events here that occurred to me and the biggest one was really their hardware

event late in the year where they introduced 21 new products and you're

seeing some of them on the table here not all of them the Echo Dot 3rd

generation the second generation of the Echo Plus the brand new Echo Sub here and the

second generation of the Echo Show we're all prime products that were released

here by Amazon in 2018. Now some additional products that maybe aren't on

everyone's radar but we're interesting expansions as far as I'm concerned you

know the Echo Auto we'd seen some other makers produce the Amazon voice

assistant onboard a device that went in the car but now Amazon has their own

there's also the Echo input which is basically a Chromecast Audio if you're

familiar with the Google product suite here and really you know from there you

have the lake the Echo Link which is intended to tie into receivers the link

amp which is intended to be its own kind of and you know just a ton of other

products like the clock and the microwave things like that that came out

that really shifted the paradigm of what we expected from a smart home product

another product they released here was the Amazon smart plug and I've used it a

few times on the channel now and I put it in a couple of demos but ultimately

what this signifies to me is amazon is going to follow the same

approach that they follow on their amazon basics and the microwaves another

example of this what they do with those Amazon basics products is they basically

replace the best-selling item on Amazon with their own so they go they see

someone making a lot of money and they go and they take that space now there

were a ton of and are still are a lot of smart plug manufacturers and creators

but Amazon has gone and tried to take away that market and that is what they

are very very good at and that also brings more people into the Echo suite

of products. The other thing we saw over 2018 you know the Fire TV Cube and the

Fire TV Recast those are really interesting products we also saw great improvements

with the fire tablets as well so those really grew in terms of capability they

started to get their voice assistant on board and they started to look much more

like smart displays over 2018 in terms of expansion you know Amazon was out

there and they had over 40 countries with the capability of buying an Amazon

Echo product and that started in 2017 now they've since expanded in some

websites say they're in 80 countries and other state say they're still around

that 40 number but where they haven't really upgraded and they did a little

bit of this this year you know we saw them going to France and Spain and

Mexico Italy as well they went into those countries this year with a much

fuller rollout and what I mean by that is they started to get the language and

they localized as well so you know really when we get right down to it

Amazon only has a few languages you know you can add English, German, Japanese to

those languages I already mentioned and then otherwise the voice assistant

doesn't come in any additional languages so relative to some of their competitors

which I'll talk about a little bit later they didn't expand a ton in terms of

language capability they sell their product in a lot of places but it's not

localized for the people who live in terms of expansion on the other side

though when we talk about some of their capabilities and we get into what the

devices can do now and the voice assistant can do you know they went from

4,000 connected devices and services to over 20,000 later in the year and

they're well over that now there's over 50,000 skills now in that Amazon voice

assistant store there so those are incredible expansions in 2018 and that

gives a ton of capability and that's what Amazon is relying on in a lot of

cases but they've also opened up their device to a ton of developers and so

they're relying on the community to develop just as much but they're putting

out these api's are these developer kits to allow people and companies to build

off of and that's where they really really succeeded in 2018 and just to

give you a few examples you know this was a little thing but it opened up a

lot of doors for them the contact a motion sensor API that they put out late

in the year allows people with in skills now to utilize the motion sensors in the

contact sensor so you can have skills that now rely on that and obviously over

the year we saw the routines capability improve with Amazon utilizing dot API so

they were able to add in these devices ZigBee type of devices or contact and

motion sensors in general later on in the air to your routine some of those

other things that they built you know there's a whole new API for cameras and

this allows you know companies like wise camp to go and get fully integrated

allow two-way communication all within the Echo suite of devices so that's

going to mean you're smart displays obviously when you're talking about

seeing what's going on with your camera on say a service likewise cam and it's

going to allow a lot more companies to have better and deeper integration in

into basically the ecosystem we they're cameras and that also applies to

doorbells as well so that API was for both cameras and smart doorbells another

couple of late year api's you know they have a security panel API so that's

going to allow companies that already have a security panel in your home to

update that device and then go ahead and connect in with your Echo devices now on

top of that you think about music streaming well that's been opened up as

well and allows companies to develop skills for their music service without

creating a whole default connection like you know Apple Music did here late in

the year so there's just been an incredible expansion of the ability to

create skills and the functions that you're going to have access to and this

extends all the way down to users just like you and I who aren't programming

anything and the example of that is Amazon blueprints so that was the

ability to create your own skills they were relatively basic but that came to

us here in 2018 in a big way and you were able to go and create your own

skills so big improvements in terms of accessibility some other service

capabilities that came out you know you look at Amazon key which also included

the ability to go ahead and have packages deliver to your car so Amazon

key allowed with certain smart home locks to allow Amazon to put the package

inside your home which is a big deal right now with a lot of people going out

and stealing packages on top of this we've seen this Amazon guard service

start to be talked about and start to be built into the next generation of

devices so you're going to be able to essentially have monitoring through your

Echo devices so they're really shifting how much these devices can do and that's

all started in 2018 so let's talk a little bit about the functions that

really just came right into the Echo devices and we'll start with music here

you know you go to Apple music late in the year this is a huge request from a

North American market standpoint Apple music is

the biggest services obviously Spotify is kind of carrying number one but

Amazon already has Spotify on the list of connected music services so to get

Apple and Spotify they're really hammering home that they're ahead of

Google on this and really still ahead of Apple on desk that's a big deal they

also added some functionality you know Amazon music got playlist management

there's an equaliser capability and then on top of that you're able to cast which

started to pair later in the year with the speaker pairing capability that

showed up so if you have to Echo Dots or to Echo Plus or two Echoes you can go

ahead and create a 2.1 system with the Echo Sub and of course you can still

create the left and right stereo pairing channel in general so all of that you

know you think about where we were in multi-room audio and you know you were

able to do a few things there in terms of multi-room audio but now with the

speaker pairing i know it doesn't have Bluetooth I know it's not connected to

everything but now with Apple Music integration that's a lot of music

services and a lot of capability on stereo pairing and a lot of capability

on music in general just showing up in 2018 the next big thing I want to talk

about I'll quickly throw in SMS messaging in on Android in the u.s.

showed up early in the year and really hasn't been expanded since but that

capability is the first of its kind doesn't exist on any other service

basically here in the smart home you know you're able to do a couple of

things with services like if this than that but ultimately it's the only of its

kind now the big thing that I want to talk about is the growth in routines and

really this is the growth in smart home capabilities in general and that's what

Amazon hit hard on their devices this year so when you think about early in

the year you know device triggers those those

triggers the you know Echo Button triggers things like that that came

earlier on in the error lots of those capabilities came earlier in the

but what started to happen later in the year you know we just saw location-based

reminders or location-based routines rather you know those really drive

different capabilities or different functionality with your routines and I

think that that again pushes them way ahead of Google and it's something I

talked about in my 20 18 Google here in review which I'll put up in the top

right corner right now if you want to go watch that video as well but you know

the routine growth just on the trigger side really created home and life

automation for what I'll say the first time in one of these smart assistant

speakers you know and when you add in the resulting actions that they added

here in 2018 the ability to create that automation is incredible and just from a

simple thing like the ability to wait and that's an action that I think I'm

gonna spend a lot of time on in 2019 to be honest because it can do so much in

terms of creating one routine and one automation and then having it really

Drive a lot of things in your life you know you think about taking a nap or you

think about scheduling a workout and you can do all of those things with one

routine now really set the scene execute and then you know and and then close it

off however you want and turn that scene off so all kinds of capability with

simple things like wait another major thing to talk about and this kind of

snuck in later in the year but we saw Amazon making all kinds of business

arrangements we saw the latest with Apple and Apple music that is what

Amazon has been so good at as well and the biggest one this year is probably

Microsoft and what we saw is Cortana and Amazon's voice assistant integration

almost entirely now on all of these devices you can go ahead and get Cortana

the other thing we saw and this is the the reverse of that the Amazon voice

assistant is now on Windows 10 so you can go ahead you can get that and you

can start to integrated into how you work with your

computer or your PC now so you know we saw Microsoft sell the products now

they're selling Echo devices we're seeing better integration with email and

really over time this is bearing more and more fruit for Amazon and Microsoft

really on that note Skype integration occurred very very late here in the year

and that kind of turns us over to the smart displays where we also had that

camera those visuals really start early on in the year on in terms of cameras

showing basically what's happening in your home and really deep integration

continuing throughout the year so we have great smart display integration for

those doorbells with a camera and some of the some of the cameras in general

the smart home camera is obviously better integration with brands like ring

and Arlo but we saw things like canary show up in in the voice assist in here

and on those smart displays on top of that I talked about the Fire HD tablets

you know you have the hands-free mode where you're able to essentially use

them like smart displays and you can get the voice assistant there that's a big

change for such an inexpensive device and then on top of that we had a couple

little things like the whisper mode and those little integrations are changes

here with the Echo devices those are big improvements they're just changed the

way you use the device a little bit on a daily basis so ultimately that's a lot

of the big capabilities that I want to talk about there were obviously a lot of

other little things that I could talk about for hours here with Amazon and

their voice assistant now in terms of starting to kind of give you a grade

here for Amazon because really have been very positive throughout this and

there's a lot of reasons to be very positive amazon has made great business

deals all throughout the year that have improved these products they have

continued to upgrade things like you know this Echo Plus version one

is almost just as capable as the Echo Plus two there's very little

differential if any I can't think of any right now off the top of my head but you

know really they they didn't have to do that they just are even though there's

putting out these new versions of the products so that's really positive stuff

that creates trust and we'll talk about trust here in a little bit we talked

about those new skills you know 50,000 skills 20,000 products and services

connecting to these devices that massive massive growth they did get into some

new countries here with full localization as what I say and they are

working very hard to get into a market like India where they're using their

Clio capability to basically build that recognition of the language there and

and a number of localized languages there right so you know they're doing a

lot of good things that are setting up for 2019 in terms of localization and

building their languages and really making these devices more powerful

internationally so those are all very very positive things what I keep coming

back to though and this is where I start to turn a little bit negative with

Amazon's products they had a number of incidents over the year where their

voices system is basically listening to people when it shouldn't be it's

recording things when it shouldn't be and it's saying things that definitely

should be shouldn't be like go kill your foster parents now you know some of that

I would say is eroding trust and there's one other thing that I keep coming back

to as well and what's happened recently and people

keep saying I'm crazy I'm crazy I'm crazy as I say this to you but the

studies continue to show that Siri is ahead of Amazon's voice assistant in

terms of response and understanding what you're saying in general and how this

impacts Amazon a really overall impacts them I think greatly what what that does

is that erodes that trust a little more as well I mean you know

when I do demos for you guys I show you when it works but there are a lot of

times when I sit here and I go okay how do I actually say this and sometimes I

have to look it up I shouldn't have to do that I use these on a daily basis so

why am i having to look up how to put something into a list or how to put

something into a custom list or how to create a custom list why am I having to

look up those things it's because sometimes this device just doesn't get

it right and the voice assistant just

doesn't get it right to put this in perspective Siri is now above on every

study I've seen in the last two quarters and they're above by a few percentage

points and Google is way ahead usually upwards of 10 to 15% better on say a

study of four hundred to a thousand questions so that tells you a lot when

we're talking about gaining the trust of these devices so really that's my big

problem with Amazon they also created a little bit of confusion with you know

their 21 products that came out here I mean how do I know the difference

between the Echo Link and the Echo Link Amp that's you know that distinction is

going to be lost on a lot of people I can tell you what it is but people are

going to have to want to figure that out and they're going to have to want to

search that out so you know will everyone do that know do they want to

know why they need a clock from Amazon that has this voice assistant on board I

think people will struggle with that initially and so it's really up to

Amazon to tell that story and I don't think they've quite got there so those

are kind of my two main issues I mean obviously Amazon did some amazing things

this year let's let's not kid ourselves to put out that many products in the

smart home space and to create as many partnerships as they did in these new

services which include partnerships you know you think about the cars being

delivered to that took GMC 2015 and newer partner

with OnStar took a lot of things to do Amazon key in cars so incredible

incredible stuff but I really struggle in 2018 with their voice assistant not

improving despite all of these announcements where they say hey we're

improving and hey it's getting better here's how we're getting better we're

learning through this way it hasn't seen really any better to me in terms of a

final grade for Amazon here I gave Google a B overall in their year here in

terms of home automation in terms of automating your life now what do I give

Amazon this is actually something I've struggled a little bit with here now I'm

going to give them a B+ and ultimately it comes down to their partnerships that

they're creating not just with companies like Microsoft like we talked about not

just like companies like Apple but they're also creating partnerships with

developers through their release of these api's and these capabilities of

really developing new better skills for their whole ecosystem and as they do

that and they really connect with the developer community they are creating

better and better functionality for you in 2018 and now in 2019 and that's this

is one of the things I'm going to focus on here in 2019 is showing you some of

those skills some of those capabilities that really push these devices ahead

further and further and allow you to take full advantage of the capabilities

of these devices the one big thing for Amazon really to do is to get their

voice assistant up to where Google's is they need to catch up on languages they

need to catch up in terms of understanding and responding to all

kinds of things you know they have some real gaps on their voice assistant right

now and they need to plug those holes before I think ultimately they can hit

the next level so there you have it guys go ahead let me know down in the

comments that's what I'm giving Amazon this year and please look forward to my

2019 predictions here for the smart home and autumn home

automation space I'm going to give you my full look ahead for what I think

Amazon and Google and Apple and Samsung and lots of these big makers are going

to give us in 2019 and I think you'll you'll get a bit of a sense of where I

feel they're lacking and you know where I think they're headed here in this

video but ultimately look for that here this weekend and thanks again everyone

for watching and we'll see you next time

It was a thing.

I was trying to make that fetch (laughs).

I wanted to go blonde.

I was filming actually at the time

Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.

So I was going through a drama phase.

This was Dolce & Gabbana.

I forget which MTV this was.

I liked the bra over the white shirt,

I tried it,

It didn't work for me (laughs).

Oh my gosh.

That's so weird.

Wow, thanks guys (laughs).

Oh my God, okay so TRL, I'm wearing Dior.

I love that shirt.

Do not hate on that shirt.

I still have that shirt.

You gotta go with the thing.

This was definitely a bold choice,

and it could've gone wrong.

This was when I hosted the MTV Movie Awards,

Then under it, I tear it off

So I made Juicy Couture (laughs).

Oh, oh, oh this was Cancun.

I was wearing a Temperley top or Cynthia Rowley.

I forget which one it was.

And Seven shorts, Seven denim shorts.

This was Nina Richey jumpsuit.

What year was this?

2010, I'm starting to feel old.

This is St. Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello,

I love this dress.

It was really comfortable to wear.

The shoes were comfortable.

I got really bored in the dressing room,

so I went over to Janet Jackson's room

I was like "No, I wanna say hi."

We had to use the same security guard

and he was like, "One second."

Then I went in.

She was just really sweet.

It was just a really nice moment.

It was fun.

It was exciting.

Anne: Welcome, everybody, to the VO BOSS podcast.

I'm your host, Anne Ganguzza, along with my Happy New Year cohost, Gabby Nistico.

Hey Gabby.

Gabby: Hey!

Happy New Year!

Anne: Yay!

Happy New Year!

I always love the beginning of a new year, Gabby.

[sighs] It's like --

Gabby: Something very refreshing or cleansing about it.

Yeah.

Anne: It's the start of an amazing year.

I get so pumped up at the beginning of the year, just thinking about "oh yeah!

I'm gonna do this for my business, and it's gonna, it's just gonna grow and improve!"

and I have all sorts of wonderful, happy success manifest feelings about it.

[laughs]

Gabby: Wow.

Anne: I get excited.

Gabby: My head's in a slightly different place right now, slightly different.

Anne: Yeah?

Gabby: I literally just met with my financial advisor, because it's that time of year,

guys.

Retirement, and investments, and portfolios, and we have to be thinking about all this

stuff, right?

Anne: Gabby, retirement.

I don't think enough people think about retirement.

I know that when I was younger, that was like the last thing on my brain as a working girl

in the corporate world.

The last thing on my brain was retirement.

And I'll tell you what, now that I'm getting a little bit older and I'm an entrepreneur,

yeah, we need to address.

We need to look ahead and plan for retirement.

So Gabby, what sorts of things were you talking about in terms of retirement and planning?

Gabby: Nobody… in our business, nobody talks about retirement.

I've never heard a voiceover refer to their career in terms of retirement, right?

Anne: Well, I have heard some SAG-AFTRA people though, because they do have a plan.

Gabby: Yes.

Anne: Right?

They have a plan they're talking about.

Gabby: Yeah, but nobody talks about it.

It's really not, it's not a common conversation, and that's why I think it's great --

Anne: Very true.

Gabby: -- that we're bringing it up and exploring it.

So there's a couple of things that happen around this time every year with my financial

advisor in conjunction with my accountant.

We're figuring out where can I max out all of my retirement investments in order to offset

taxes, right?

That's a huge thing this time of year.

Anne: Oh yeah.

Gabby: So first --

Anne: Offsetting taxes is key.

Gabby: Oh God yeah.

So first thing out of the gate is making sure that I've maxed out my Roth.

$5500 done, in there for the year.

Don't have to think about it anymore.

Anne: Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Gabby: And then, I also have a SEP for my business, which many of you might have, and

if you don't, you might want to look into it.

Because what happens with a SEP account is, there's quite a bit of money you can put

into one.

I think it's up to $25,000 annually.

And it too offsets your total income, and it's pre-tax, and it's a really, really

amazing way to build up a pension for yourself and to build up that wealth for later in life.

Anne: So Gabby, talk to me about what is -- or, and our listeners -- what is a SEP account?

What, how is that spelled, for those of you who have never heard of it?

Gabby: Yeah, it's an S-E-P, SEP.

Anne: I've never heard of a SEP account.

Gabby: Ok, so a SEP-IRA is a Simplified Employee Pension Individual Retirement Arrangement.

Anne: Ohh.

Gabby: That's what it stands for.

Can you imagine, like the fact that I'm the one giving this financial advise right

now, this is hysterical, right?

My tattooed behind is talking retirement.

Ok, here we go.

[[both laugh]]

Anne: Well Gabby, I'm gonna hold that, hold, hold you to that thought because I, I want

to address it from my standpoint too, which is coming from corporate.

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: And having a pension that was provided to me.

But talk -- I need to know more about this SEP.

Gabby: It's pretty straight-forward.

It's the business equivalent of a Roth IRA, which is your personal IRA.

Anne: Ahh yes.

Gabby: And you're allowed to put a greater amount of money into it as a business owner,

or partner, or shareholder.

And it can really significantly help in terms of again reducing your tax debt each year

--

Anne: Yes.

Gabby: -- but also making it so that you're really making some super headway into retirement

accounts.

Because let's face it, the Roth at $5500, and I think it's, you know, whatever it

is, like $10,000 if you're married --

Anne: That's nothing --

Gabby: It's nothing!

Anne: -- to live on [laughs] in this day and age.

Gabby: Oh God, it's pennies.

Anne: Get off my lawn!

Get off my lawn!

In this day and age!

Gabby: It's so true.

We're here, we're old, we're tired.

Get off my lawn.

Anne: Get off my lawn!

But you do have to think about it.

Now Gabby, I love that you brought that up because I come from a different background.

I come from having, you know, 25 to 30 years in corporate.

And so thankfully, ok, I had a retirement plan put in place for me by the company that

I worked for.

And mine, actually because I worked for an educational institution, was a pension plan.

So thankfully I am vested in a pension plan.

So is my husband.

I also have a Roth IRA, and I have investments that I'm making towards my retirement.

Do you remember, Gabby, a long time ago, I think when all of us thought $1 million was

a lot of money to retire on?

Gabby: Oh my God.

Oh my God.

Anne: It's so not the case anymore.

It just isn't.

Gabby: No. $1 million is nothing.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: That's what's crazy.

Anne: Yeah…

Gabby: My advisor is very vocal about that fact that $1 million per person is the bare

minimum --

Anne: Yes.

Absolutely the bare minimum

Gabby: -- you need to have in retirement, yeah, to maintain your standard of living.

Anne: Oh I think, Gabby, really, what you've got, what you've got to do, and this is

how I kind of just put it in perspective, is I have to take a look at what I spend on

a monthly basis to live and figure out how, when I'm not working anymore and I'm not

making the income that I am making now, how am I going to get that income?

And so there's a multitude of different things that I'm doing for my retirement,

and as I mentioned, I'm very thankful that I'm part of a pension plan.

My husband is part of a pension plan.

I also contribute myself now to a Roth IRA, and I also have investments in mutual funds

that are working for me and some stocks.

Gabby: I, I do that as well.

We go ahead, and we reassess that every couple of years.

I'm fairly aggressive in mine though because I still have a little bit of the luxury of

being aggressive yet for probably, I don't know, another 10, 15 years.

Anne: Yes.

Gabby: And then you know, as you get older, you kind of decrease the risk factor.

Anne: I -- you know, that's so funny, Gabby.

I was thinking about that the other day in terms of, you know, my mutual funds.

You know, as entrepreneurs, we are, we take risks.

Gabby: Mm-hmm.

Anne: So yeah, I'm that aggressive, I have a good percentage of my investment that is

aggressive still as well.

Gabby: [laughs] So every time we make an investment, especially if it's into an individual stock,

he will say to me, you know, "do you want the S&P?

Do you want to be able to see the number on the ticker?"

I'm like, "no, I don't want to know anything."

Anne: Exactly.

Gabby: "No, absolutely not.

I don't, let it ride."

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: And, and that's how -- I mean, that's me personally.

It's not that way for everybody, but I see it as a long-term investment, a long-term

risk.

Anne: Mm-hmm.

Gabby: Let it ride.

I'm not gonna be in the stock exchange checking every day, every week to see what it's doing.

Anne: Yep, I'm right there with you.

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: As a matter of fact, when I worked -- God, I was like 20-something, one of the first

things I did in the company that I worked for was buy stock.

And I didn't have a whole lot to invest at the time, because I was just out of college

and paying a lot of student loans, but I invested $500.

And I haven't looked back since.

I haven't looked at the numbers.

I haven't -- it hasn't made me crazy.

It's been one of those things where I just, I don't, I don't want to look at it every

day.

However, it has grown substantially in the, uh you know, oh my gosh, in my 20, 30 years

plus.

And it's been a really nice, long-term investment.

Gabby: Nice.

Anne: But that, that was a savior, Gabby, for my sanity was not looking at that and

not expecting really anything or, or depending on it for anything, which I think is important.

Gabby: And that's, that's really I think the key to retirement planning, for any industry,

but ours especially.

It's, it's, you have to be able to put aside the money that you don't need to think about.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: The money that you don't need to spend in the next six to 12 months.

And, and you literally, it's like, get it out of my sight.

I don't, it's not here.

Anne: Yeah.

Mine is deducted automatically from my bank account --

Gabby: Yep.

Anne: -- my contributions, and that's really, you know, and you work for a company, same

thing.

It's deducted out of your paycheck, and I think the less you think about it or look,

look at it, the easier it is.

Gabby: Yeah, it really is.

But for entrepreneurs, it's so hard sometimes.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: Because we go, oh my gosh.

No, no, no.

I don't know, you know, month-to-month I don't know what my income's gonna be, so I can't

commit to a set amount coming out because what if I need to change it?

Well, guess what, guys?

That's the beauty of working with somebody.

That's the beauty of having a team.

I can call my financial advisor right now.

Yes, New Year's Day [laughs] and say, need to make a change.

Anne: Exactly.

Excellent point.

Gabby: And he will do it first available business.

It's, it's very easy to do now, and some of it you can even do yourself online.

Anne: Yeah, people just feel so overwhelmed that they do nothing at all.

And so my advice is do something, even if it is a little something, every month, every

week that you can put aside, to put into that retirement.

You know, I started off contributing $50, you know, and so ultimately it grew over the

years to my contribution, depending on how my business was being run, but I started off

with a very small amount, and just, and start now.

Guys, there's no time like now, today -- Happy New Year's --

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: -- to, to really, if you've not done, if you've not done this and not made the

investment, get yourself a good financial advisor that you trust, and I have one that

I absolutely love.

I have been working with him for 25 years.

I trust him implicitly to, to handle my mutual funds and to help me to make wise investments

for my retirement.

And he also, he, he actually comes after me.

This is how little I try to have to do with it, and I know that I'm not unlike most

people.

Right?

Gabby: Funny.

Anne: I don't want to think about it, but I do.

And he comes at me every month, and he's like, "Anne, let's review the portfolio.

Anne, sign this."

Gabby: Oh wow.

Anne: "Call me."

And so at least I'm talking about it.

Right?

And he can bring up all sorts of wonderful points that I'm unaware of.

Retirement is not something that is prevalent on my brain every second of the day.

So he can say, "did you know we could do this?

We could invest here.

If you contributed to here more, your tax savings for this year is going to be a whole

lot better.

You know, there's new tax laws.

He knows all -- this is what he does.

This is, he lives my eats and breathes this.

So I listen to him.

Gabby: You have to get a financial planner that you, that you love basically.

You have got to go about an interviewing process and find the person who's right for you.

That's, that's number one because it is going to be a very long term relationship.

But I think one of the mistakes people make is they think that they have to have a stock

file of wealth or a significant amount of money to even call a financial advisor or

start that process.

No.

That is not --

Anne: No.

Gabby: Accurate.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: A financial advisor's job is to help you grow wealth.

So the assumption is you don't have any wealth right now.

[laughs]

Anne: [laughs]

Gabby: You're starting at nothing.

And, and they make many suggestions, and it starts very simply.

Like OK, so my, my very first year with my financial guy, I was not, I was not amused

by the way.

OK?

This was a tough one for me.

I had to really bite the bullet.

We took a look at all of my expenses, everything, and he said, you know, you are really, you

are in great shape with a lot of these things.

You are living below your means.

That is exactly what you want to see.

You don't have a lot of debt, credit cards are virtually nil.

He said but, we need to talk about your car payment, Gabby.

And I went oh [beep].

Anne: [laughs]

Gabby: Basically what it came down to is he said your car payment's higher than it needs

to be.

It's unnecessary.

If you trade in the car, go for a four-door model -- I had to give up my little sports

car.

I had to do it, Anne.

I couldn't believe it.

If you give that up and go to a four-door, you're gonna save money on the insurance.

You're gonna lower the amount of the payment.

And he goes, and then we have more money that we can invest.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: He was right.

He was absolutely right.

So that's what I did.

And so it's, it's things like that that they assist you with.

One of the other things that you want to be aware of is things like a solo 401(k).

And that's something they help you set up.

Anne: Yes, Absolutely.

Absolutely.

And that's something that is so important if you right now are an entrepreneur, I mean,

and you are not having -- like I was so used to for so many years, you know, the company

that I worked for providing, you know, retirement, and, and all of my investments.

So when you are on your own, that is something you cannot ignore.

And you do have to, you do have to start thinking about that.

And of course, you know, health insurance is the other, the other aspect.

So when you retire, what is going to, you know, how are you going to be able to pay

for any medical emergencies that come up, and if you, if what you are going to be getting

is going to be able to, to handle --

Gabby: Sustain you.

Anne: -- any type of emergency -- yeah, sustain you.

Handle, handle any type of emergencies that might arise.

Gabby: Yeah, I mean one of the great things about this process, and look, it is scary.

I get it.

It, it's not a comfortable thing for people.

You have to kind of stare down the barrel of your own mortality.

It's not fun.

I know, right?

Happy New Year.

[both laugh]

Anne: Great, Gabby.

Gabby: It's a little dark, but it's coming from me.

What do you expect?

Anne: [laughs]

Gabby: It's a little morose.

Anne: Gabby, I'm still happy and excited, I'm just gonna say --

Gabby: See, there you go.

Anne: -- about my new year.

Gabby: We're yin and yang, baby.

Yin and yang.

Anne: Well you know, we're educated, but we need to do is, you just need to just --

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: I feel so much more positive, and I have such a better outlook when I'm educated.

And I think that every one of us as an entrepreneur, if you can educate yourself on those things

that, that can help drive your business forward, and help you in the years to come, and especially

in retirement, all the better.

Gabby: It's totally about securing your future.

You will inevitably in this process get in to things like life insurance and how you

want to handle that, your will, trusts.

There are so many different ways in which you can start to safeguard and plan.

Like even things like, you know, whole term life and 401(k), solo 401(k)'s, I talk to

business owners sometimes who have no idea these things exist.

And I'm like, whoa.

That's scary, because what is going to happen?

The time to do it is now.

You don't want to wait.

You don't want to be a couple of years away from retirement going, "oh, I got to start

planning for retirement.

Oo, that's bad."

Anne: [laughs]

Gabby: You want to do it now.

Anne: And then it becomes, you make any move, desperate move -- [laughs]

Gabby: Yes.

Yeah.

Anne: -- to try and get that money to support you.

And I, I just don't think that an entrepreneur wants to have a campaign, a Gofundme campaign,

to try and live their retirement.

Gabby: Right.

Anne: So I don't think that's going to work really well.

Gabby: Such a great point.

Anne: And -- yeah.

Gabby: And I can only tell you, and Anne, I'm sure you agree, if I could have started

doing this, if I had the foresight to do this when I was in my 20's --

Anne: Oh gosh, yeah.

Gabby: Oh my God.

I would have so much more money already accumulated right now.

Anne: That's one of the reasons I'm thankful I did start working, you know, in the corporate

world in my 20's, because I did start that foundation, and again, it was one of those

things that I was like, "yeah, OK, whatever.

What do I check," you know, when I was being employed.

"What, alright, how much do I have, what's the least amount that I can give?

And Is the company" -- it was all that, back when companies matched.

[laughs]

Gabby: Some still do.

Some still do.

Anne: Some still do.

But yeah, it was one of those things where I really, I don't even want to think about

it, but it's so true.

Think about that $1 million which really is not enough to support you for, you know, very

long in retirement.

Gabby: No.

And one of the things that my financial advisor told me way, way at the start of our relationship

that has always stuck with me, he said, "the first $100,000 is the hardest to get to."

Anne: Mmm.

Gabby: And what he means by that is $100,000 in savings.

Anne: Yes.

Gabby: Having $100,000 in accounts that you are not touching, that you are basically committed

to not touching until you are at retirement age.

He goes, that first $100,000 is the hardest to get to.

Once you, you're there, incrementally, it starts to do more.

It builds more wealth.

The process becomes easier.

Anne: Oh, absolutely.

That's a, that's an excellent point.

Excellent point.

Gabby: Yep, so start today, guys.

It's --

Anne: Yes.

Gabby: And it is a family discussion, right?

Talk to your spouses, talk to family members.

You know, it's, it's a discussion that you want to have way before you need to have

it.

Anne: Yes, and start when you're two… years old.

Gabby: Oh God, wouldn't that be amazing?

Anne: It would, right if --

Gabby: Oh my God.

Anne: [laughs] If only.

If only.

But hey.

Guys, it's never too late to start.

Start now.

Gabby: No.

Anne: Start now in this new year while we are manifesting success and wonderful things

for our businesses and growth.

Gabby: I can't think of a better thing to do for the new year than to think about the

growth of wealth.

Anne: Yeah.

That's a lovely thing to think about, Gabby.

You know, it's like one of our favorite topics.

Gabby: Oh.

So BOSS.

Anne: Money.

Wealth.

So BOSS.

Guys, have an amazing new year.

Go ahead, Gabby.

Give me an admission of something… that happens.

Gabby: [laughs]

Anne: Something weird that happens to you.

Gabby: Admission of something?

Oh my God.

[both laugh]

Anne: [indiscernible]

Gabby: Oh my God.

An admission of something.

Anne: Weird.

Not just something, weird.

Gabby: [laughs]

Anne: You must admit something weird.

Gabby: I don't know what my weird things -- well, I mean like you know this about me.

Like I have like Tourette's.

Like I just periodically blurt [beep] out.

Anne: I've never noticed that, seriously.

Seriously.

Gabby: Oh God, I do it all the time.

Anne: Well, I don't expect that to be Tourette's.

I think that's just you and your personality.

Gabby: Oh ok, well there you go.

Anne: Is that really Tourette's?

No seriously.

Gabby: It's, it's like a weird like tick, like whatever.

Like I'm certain that I'm on the spectrum in some way.

Like I should have been -- [laughs] I like skirted in right under the radar.

Anne: You and a billion other people right, you and a billion other people that, you know.

Gabby: Yeah!

Like, like I mean, I just --

Anne: From our generation that have -- that just, you know, nobody --

Gabby: Because it wasn't a thing!

Anne: It wasn't a thing.

Gabby: It wasn't a thing then.

And so no, I just like, I randomly like just curse and outburst and --

Anne: Aha.

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: There we go.

Gabby: And it's for no reason.

It's just --

Anne: "I randomly curse for no reason."

Gabby: -- what must have been.

Anne: Yeah, OK.

You put a label -- go ahead, put a label on it, Gabby.

Gabby: So, no.

I did it the other day at the grocery store.

And I, and this woman was next to me.

And I literally went, "I'm so sorry.

That was inappropriate behavior for the yogurt aisle."

And then she laughed really hard.

[laughs]

Anne: The yogurt aisle.

"That was -- I'm sorry for my, I'm sorry for my inappropriate behavior in the yogurt

aisle."

Gabby: And then she laughed, and it was OK.

But before that she was just absolutely mortified.

[both laugh]

Anne: What did you say?

Gabby: I was just like --

[beautiful jazz music covers story]

[both laugh]

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: Oh my God, that's so funny.

Gabby: And then like per -- and like it's, it's a horrible word, and it's a terrible

word to come out of the mouth of a woman, but periodically, it's just [beep]

Anne: [laughs] That one comes out, yeah.

Gabby: No reason.

Anne: I hear you.

Gabby: [beep].

[laughs]

Anne: And that's one that I don't like, but I've, I've softened --

Gabby: I know.

Most women don't like it, and I just don't care.

Anne: Yeah, I just don't like the word.

I don't like the sound of it.

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: I don't like the sound of it.

Gabby: Most women don't.

Anne: I don't like the intimation of it.

Gabby: I say it an awful lot.

Anne: You're not the only one.

Gabby: There's [beep] awful.

That's a good one too.

Anne: There you go.

Gabby: [laughs]

Anne: Oh my God, I'm blushing over here.

Gabby: [beep] waffles.

Anne: All right, are we um uhh?

Gabby: Let's try this again, shall we?

Anne: Now that we probably have our sufficient outtakes for the year.

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: [beep] waffle.

[both laugh]

Anne: Welcome to the VO BOSS podcast.

I'm Anne Ganguzza, with my wonderful, glorious, loving [beep] waffle, Gabby Nistico.

[both laugh hard]

Gabby: Oh my God.

Oh my God.

Oh my God.

Anne: You said it.

You made me say it.

You know that I don't do those things.

I'm a [laughs] I'm a wholesome girl.

I'm a wholesome girl.

Gabby: I'm crying.

I'm crying.

Anne: [beep] waffle.

Where does the waffle come into it?

I don't understand.

How is the waffle associated?

Gabby: Well, and then I want to know, is its counterpart a penis pancake?

Like you know?

Anne: Penis pancake! [beep] waffle.

That was a healthy breakfast of penis pancake.

[both laugh]

Gabby: Stop it.

Anne: You are not.

You are not putting that in.

You are not going to put that in.

That is not talk for an outtake either.

There is no, that has never been appropriate.

That's inappropriate for outtakes even.

Gabby: Says you.

Anne: Says, says, yes.

All right, here we go.

[long pause] OK.

Welcome, everybody.

[laughs] [beep]

[both laugh]

Anne: I keep thinking about it.

I just want to introduce you as my [beep] waffle.

I can't.

Creativity is the future. Why? - Duration: 3:27.

Hi

Creativity is the future

Why?

Why creativity is the future?

Hi, my name is Dickson and in today's video

I'm going to share with you why creativity is the future? And why do you need to pay attention to

creativity in preparation for the future. Now before I proceed ...

Can I suggest that you click the subscribe or the follow button so that you can receive

continuous update from me. Now, why creativity is the future? There are couple reasons.

The reason number one is people who have and who owned ideas are

now more powerful that means

the business edge in the future is not about what resources or what materials you have but is about what

ideas you have.

Take the example of

companies like Uber

they don't have

much resources. In fact they don't own any vehicles

but what they have is the idea. The idea of connecting the passengers with the

cars. So

increasingly people who have ideas

will be more powerful. The same applies to people who have ideas about how the artificial intelligence will work ...

People who have ideas about how the big data will work. So people who have ideas

will be more powerful that's reason number one why creativity is the future.

Another reason why creativity is the future is ...

according to McKinsey research, almost half of the work activities we are doing right now will be automated.

So what should you do? That means you have to find your new value proposition as a human.

So what's the area that you will have an edge over robot? That's in the area of

you being creative and so that's the another reason.

The third reason why creativity is the future because ... according to World Economic Forum

research...

Creativity skill is actually one of the fastest growing skills right now.

That means if you don't have the creativity skill, you are missing out. And

last but not least why creativity is the future,

I would like to share with you a quote by Dr Lee Kai-Fu,

the former Google executive and an artificial intelligence expert. He said

artificial

intelligence is the future, but

creative types of talent won't be replaced. So these are the couple reasons why

creativity is the future. People who have ideas will be more powerful

Work activity is changing and you have to find your new creative value proposition.

Number three, creativity is one of the fastest growing skills. If you don't have it you are missing out. And

last but not least, creative types of talent won't be replaced

So I hope this sharing is something useful to you and I hope you realize that creativity is the utmost

important skill towards the future. If you like this video share with your

friends and your colleagues. Once again this is Dickson and I hope you enjoyed this video. Embrace the future. BE CREATIVE!

Cheers
