Is everyone ready for their New Year's cleaning?
Cosmetics and care products are the most often to suddenly show up during cleaning
But when you finally acknowledge their presence, most of these products are already expired
A lot of people are reluctant to just throw them away, so they come and ask us: Can I use expired care products?
Our answer is:
But it smells ok, and looks fine. Can't I use it? Please?
Even though it looks fine
the contents in the product may have already deteriorated
they may have developed bacteria or mold
In fact, it is a dangerous gamble to use expired care products
If you win the gamble, all you gain is this extra use
If you lose, you will harm your skin
It may cause irritation or serious effects, and is not worth it at all!
But this is really expensive! Can't I use them on my hands and feet?
Even though the cuticle layer on your hands and feet are thicker and thus is less affected by irritation and sesitivity
but no one can guarantee that nothing will go wrong
If something does go wrong, there's no use arguing to the manufacturers either
since you didn't follow the instructions and used expired products
But this is a really famous brand
it's expiry date must be the safest one
so it should be ok to use it just a few days after the expiry date, isn't it?
Before a care product is manufactured, it will go through these tests
stability testing
antimicrobial effectiveness testing
heat stress testing
in an antimicrobial effectiveness testing, they will take out some of the product
and add in some common bacteria and mold
and test its antibacterial effects
Products like lotion will often undergo heat stress testing
They take the product, with its package and all
and throw it into an box whose temperature can be controlled
and then they alternate high and low temperatures to torment it
It simulates the daily scenario
After these tests are done manufacturers will set an expiry date
telling everyone how long this product can be used
Here's the point, is there a legal and universal standard for the expiry date?
No there isn't. There is no official or a third-party verification standard
Which is to say, the government won't go looking at every product to see whether the product has passed the tests
nor will they really examine if the expiry dates are accurate
It's mostly fine

But it doesn't mean you can use it after it's expired!
But but but, this isn't even expired!
Can't I use this?
Is a product that hasn't expired perfectly safe?
Not always
In different storage conditions, the product may still have deteriorated before the expiry date

After you open the package it's not this expiry date you have to look at
When the product has begun to be exposed to the outside world
there's a high chance it will start to oxidate and cultivate bacteria and mold
The EU set another standard called PAO
This is smaller
and usually put on the bottom or the margin of the package

means that you can use it for 6 months after you open it
12M means you can use it for 12 months, and so on
Simple, right?
Still, we have to remind you all not to see expiry dates or PAO's as a guarantee of safety
So, even within the expiry date
if you find that the product has changed color, has a funny smell
or when the oil and water has separated, these are all signs that the quality is unstable
We suggest you not to use it anymore
You are responsible for your own skin's health

But, there are so many stuff
How do I keep track of the time I started to use them?
We saw some people share some useful tips on the Internet
On PTT, Tristayes made an Excel chart to record everything that has been bought
and their expiry dates and opened dates to keep track of these useful but hard to remember information
We also recommend that you record the expiry date after opening according to PAO
so you can keep everything in control and remember its conditions
Or, the simplest advice would be
Don't store things up!
But, there's a buy 5 get 1 free sale!
It's not such a bargain if you can't use them all!
