hello Automaters. Thanks for tuning in again. This video is intended to help you
make better decisions in the coming 2019 year and you know there's lots of prediction
videos out there, but now what I'm trying to do is actually use some of the
insights that I have in into the industry of smart home and home
automation and what I've seen in the past as a predictor to the future. So I'm
trying to help you make the right choices here in 2019. We're gonna have a
little fun in this video of course but let me give you my predictions for 2019
in the smart home and home automation space. Let's get going.
Now a few of these are going to be pretty obvious but let's start with what I
think is the most obvious one Google is going to build out their business
service business and the reason this is so obvious is what they're doing with
Duplex be it the first salvo with Duplex was basically let's create reservations
in businesses and the second salvo has been the ability for businesses to go
into you know a service like Google Maps and through their Google business
account to enable whether or not they will accept calls from duplex now what
this means for 2019 in my opinion is we're going to see some connected
services for businesses so businesses are going to be able to receive those
reservations as well as you as the consumer are going to be able to make
those reservations now it doesn't stop there in 2019 I think again we've seen
the consumer side where they're able to make purchases through certain Google
assistant skills or actions there. You're able to make some purchases with
some very specific vendors what you haven't been able to do is actually have
that other piece of the transaction be handled and and basically give you
updates on package all through duplex so you know biting into Amazon's world in a
bit of a backdoor way here, Google will with their partners. We've seen them
partner with Walmart and Best Buy we'll see them really partner with a
number of these retailers and handle lots of the processing for them of these
orders in the management of those orders through their systems so you're going to
see Duplex build into a business AI machine. So this is a bit of a wild
prediction and I'll admit there's not a lot of basis out on the market right now
the reason I'm saying this is going to occur is simply put, there's nothing out
there and Google has a history of ensuring that everyone has a platform to
build off and that that platform is theirs. So what I'm talking about here is
Google will release in 2019, I think this is going to be kind
of mid 2019, a platform for smart home and home automation and industrial
automation to build off of, and what this means is ZigBee and z-wave protocols are
going to start their decline. And you know what,
ZigBee and z-wave you know we've all relied on them for a few years and what
I'll say is they're falling a little bit behind and the other problem is the 2.4
gigahertz the Wi-Fi in your home cannot necessarily manage all of these devices
or we're going to struggle and we know Google already has their mesh Wi-Fi
platform it would be very simple for them to build that IOT platform either
into those devices as a firmware upgrade or build new devices that have that IOT
platform and really unite everyone under one umbrella, that again is their
umbrella. And then ultimately I think you know Google if they're building out the
business side here and they're building out the IOT which again that means
they're going to release products under this platform relatively soon in 2019
and that's why I think we haven't seen the z-wave hub be enabled in the Google
Home devices. I just don't think they're buying into those technologies as being
the be-all, end-all for their system, for their platform. So a couple
quick things about Google still and then we're going to move on to some of the other
home automation platforms here. Number one Nest is going to follow the Google
model. So I think we're done with the really, really high-end releases from
Nest. We'll see a few more because I'm sure they have some of those products in
the pipeline but ultimately Nest is going to fall in line. Now we saw the CEO
get let go earlier this year and ultimately I think he was standing in
the way of deeper integration with the Google platform and ultimately you know
following the Google model which is put a device in every part of the home so
they don't just want one device in your home that's very
expensive which is kind of the nest model you can't afford ten of those nest
IQ cams but you know ultimately you could afford five or six Google Home
Mini so we'll see nest fall in line now the next thing and this pairs a little
bit with Google duplex this is the processing power that they're giving you
there the routines functionality right now as far as I'm concerned they are so
far behind Amazon and they know it and they're going to fix it and what they're
going to fix it with is duplex now duplex will allow them to create
completely customized routines with multiple triggers and/or multiple
conditions so one thing that we haven't seen here yet and and this kind of goes
to industrial automation and and automation and software in general or
just software in general you know what you can have is you can have a trigger
but then you can test conditions and that's one of the things we've been
missing from a lot of these platforms and these software you know just these
software platforms they haven't been able to use conditions so you know we're
going to see that capability with duplex with the assistant with your Google
Homes and a completely customized capability for routines and we already
have the ability to use any you know any statement inside of a routine from
Google but what we what we still can't do is trigger a routine off of something
happening and that's because I believe behind this all is a much bigger release
for how home automation is going to work so I think you can see that Google is
relatively building to a couple of major major releases again and I'm sure we're
going to see that at Google i/o which this year I hope to be at physically so
you know Google i/o is going to come and I think we're going to see a bunch of
those releases but for now we're gonna move on to some of those other you know
smart home makers builders we're gonna leave Amazon towards the end of the vid
you know here because they have more partnership and intermixing with other
companies that i want to talk about but moving on to Apple and we've seen the
home pod come out and there's been mixed reviews about that device I mean audio
quality is unbelievable its ability to answer is actually a lot better than I
think people give it credit for and so Apple has a platform that a lot
of people I think would really like in the integration with iPhones and iPads
is really strong there's Apple T TV integration that's actually really good
as well so you know they have a lot here to offer but what they've done is in
pure Apple style they went out and tried to charge $400 for their device and
that's we're talking us here so you know here in Canada it's 450 Canadian I think
it's 350 in the US but you know it's a crazy number for people to jump into
home automation and so everybody everybody and their mother has been
saying mini home pod mini home pod mini home pod that's not what I see for 2019
what I see is following suit with a smart display and the reason I say that
is you think about the iPad platform and you know the amount of people who have
an iPad in their home now you can do conversions if they want that's not
Apple style what I see them doing is releasing an iPad style smart display in
2019 in a couple of different styles with a focus on home automation I ought
still all of the capabilities of an iPad and if you think about how powerful that
platform would be it just becomes a stationary iPad but able to control all
of your Apple devices all of your homekit enabled devices and that's what
I see coming so I don't see something that's cheaper I see something that's
more expensive and and that's kind of the way apples been going with their
iPhones anyway so I think that's actually a pretty safe prediction not
necessarily the way people were expecting Apple to go with creating a
mini version of their speaker so moving on to some of these other
home automation makers you know we have Samsung hanging out there with their
Samsung smartthings platform that needs a full refresh they released their v3
and their new application is coming and it has great functionality but what's
the point when Amazon routines are as good as they are and Google's routines
are going to be as good as they are Bixby dies on on launch essentially you
know it's it's been launched Bixby's dead in 2019 I'm sorry Samsung you're
too late you're you're not going to be able to keep up here so you know Bixby
dies but what's funny and this is the this is probably the interesting
prediction for people Cortana lives on and why does Cortana
live because they've partnered with Amazon and this is where we start
talking about Amazon and their partnership so Amazon is not going to
quit number one they are in this in the in for the long haul they're in for a
penny they're in for a thousand pounds you know and what they've done with
Microsoft is they've started this really really deep partnership and we're
already seeing echo products being sold inside the Microsoft stores so what does
that mean what's what's Microsoft's gain from this obviously there's going to be
a little bit of revenue and profit from selling Amazon's products in their
stores but what's the other side of this and so Cortana has to be a piece of this
and the ultimately the office connected services they're that whole platform has
to be used so for me Cortana becomes the business component of the Amazon voice
assistant and it also becomes the horsepower some of the horsepower behind
processing some of these requests and we've seen the latest email integration
and we know Microsoft has this big business component and so Amazon's going
to get more and more people for Microsoft into office 365 into
Microsoft's whole business platform the small business owner they're going to
target people like me so this is hard to explain in
terms of a prediction but ultimately Cortana becomes the business component
of Amazon's business business so this year 2018 we saw Amazon put out I think
you I think the number was 21 different products and that's 21 different echo
products or fire products that came out and we're home automation and we saw
everything from a microwave which people laughed at and you know to a wall clock
that is now on the market to the input to the auto all of those new devices and
you can see that branch out from Amazon trying to own a little piece of
everything in your home in different ways than just a smart speaker so Amazon
is going to continue that that's it's 40 to 50 products we're going to see this
year and so what is a prediction like that what I have to do is give you a few
examples so you know we have the amp we have the sub now and we have the fire TV
cube and the sticks all of those are home entertainment systems and they all
are going to have to play nice by the end of 2019 or people are going to feel
confused now some things work some things don't but one of the things that
Amazon sells for example is a lot of DVDs and a lot of blu-rays and a lot of
digital media of course now they're going to put out a blu-ray player / DVD
player and that's going to be an echo player and it's going to have the
ability to work with all of these devices all of those devices that I just
mentioned and it all has to be working by the end of 2019 they want to own your
entertainment center and they're working very very hard to beat everyone else to
the market on it now moving on to a second space in your home that I think
Amazon is trying to win a lot of your business within that is the kitchen and
the kitchens a lot harder to kind of go and say okay well we're gonna make an
Amazon echo toaster because not necessarily everybody has their toaster
plugged in all the time and you know a blender those kinds of things these are
much harder devices to get people to think well I would like a connected
device so there are a few things that I think are connected all the time that
Amazon is after and everyone laughed at the microwave they thought that silly
why would I want that GE actually produced one earlier this year if you'll
remember a couple of people have are a couple of businesses have identified
that this is really important and the this space is really important rather
now what I think we're going to see and what amazon has already identified in my
mind is that you have to attack those those things that are connected all the
time so the microwave is one of those the oven is another the dishwasher the
refrigerator so Amazon has that Amazon basics line that they're going to
release these under with echo integration so I think we're going to
see Amazon hit big time in the imply ins market and I wouldn't be surprised to
see them partner with someone on this call it the Amazon basic / Frigidaire er
I don't know what you're going to call it but I think we'll see them partner
with someone who's really good at building these appliances the laundry
rooms another place where they'll build a couple of those and release those in
probably late 2019 one other device that I think we're all dying for is a coffee
maker why can't I make a coffee maker in 2019 in an automated way without it
being the old drip kind I don't want that come on guys so I think we're going
to see Amazon build one of those and it's going to be a relatively automated
thing and when you run out I bet it oh I bet it orders you more coffee
a couple more predictions here about these other companies that are out there
they're kind of hanging out there they're touching into the home
automation space but they're not really you know full-on in and one of the
things is the little guy and the little guy is going to explode in 2019 and
quickly died and the reasons are basically what I've told you about
Google releasing their own platform and you know some of these big makers
struggling or changing their direction and you know when you talk about a
company like Amazon producing as many products as I think they're going to in
2019 you're just not going to have a lot of room for these little guys so we're
really going to become a four horse race in 2019 Google Amazon Apple and Xiaomi
speaking of the little guys this is my last prediction I'm not gonna you know
continue here I could continue probably for another half an hour talking to you
about Xiaomi and GE and all of those other makers who are clearly going to
bring a lot of products to the table and you know work in partnership with some
of those other big companies as well that's clearly going to happen but the
last prediction for you here is on automate your life we will have our own
home automation product or something that is a companion to home automation
products and we will have that by the second quarter of 2019 so that's my
prediction here that's for myself and it gives you a little bit of insight into
the ways I'm thinking about the market as well so there you have it everyone I
hope these predictions will help you and if you have questions about specific
things I've said in this or you just want to challenge me go ahead and
challenge me these are predictions or they're obviously not going to be 100%
accurate but if there's something you're seeing and you want to strike up a
conversation please go ahead leave them down below and of course join up on the
channel to see those predictions either come true or for me to crow so thanks
again everyone for watching and we'll see you next time
you

Touring A Muscadine Winery | Hey Y'all | Southern Living - Duration: 7:15.
Hey Y'all, I love wine!
I've been to wineries all over the world
and have passed an introductory level sommelier exam
but I don't really know that much about Alabama wine.
Muscadine wine is really popular here in the south
and it's a sweeter style wine.
I'm packing some spicy picnic food
to take with me to a local winery
to learn more about muscadine wine.
Let's hit the road and get to tasting.
I found an Asian salad kit at the grocery store
that I've packed.
I also have some spicy Thai peanut noodles
that I think are gonna go great with my Asian salad
and some cold fried chicken fingers.
And knowing me, y'all know how much I love dessert,
I got two pre-made desserts.
This really good looking coconut custard pie
and a mango key lime pie.
(light country music)
I'm at Wills Creek Winery, let's get tasting.
We are known, are signature wines are our muscadine.
The first we're gonna talk about today
is our Blush Muscadine.
It is made from the lighter fruit but not quite red.
The juice that comes out is really
a beautiful light red color and we ferment it immediately.
We don't put it on the skins as we do the Purple Muscadine.
This one of our least sweet wines, although it is sweet.
I really like that one, it's not as sweet
as you expect when you smell it, it smells a lot sweeter.
This might go with my fried chicken.
And it's cold friend chicken which I think
most people eat it hot, I love leftover cold fried chicken.
You're a Southerner after my own heart.
I don't like rewarmed fried chicken, that's for sure.
That is not the way to do it here in the south.
So let's take a look
at our Bronze Muscadine from our white fruit
that we bring in from the vineyard.
We put all of our white fruit together
and immediately start it into fermentation.
So these two are made the exact same way,
it's just two different grape varieties?
Yes.
This one smells just like muscadines fresh off the vine.
I remember picking them when I was little
in my neighbors yard.
Now we make this a little bit sweeter
because I do have actually people tell me
that this is not sweet enough.
Really?
So the Purple Muscadine is the next one we're gonna try.
It's darker and it's fermented on the skins
for about five days so you get all the good antioxidants
from the skins and the seeds.
It's fermenting while it's on the skins
and then we put it right in the press and press it out
and then it continues to ferment in the stainless tank.
This one smells sweeter than the rest of em.
I think these two smell really similar
but this one is a little bit more ripe smelling.
That doesn't necessarily mean the grapes were riper.
Well we try to bring all of our fruit in
that's very ripe.
We're pretty picky about what comes in.
It's not what you want,
you don't get the wine result that you want.
Yes.
(light country music)
So here we are and this whole area
is cleaned out and we bring in our muscadines
and we crush them and we get em right into the press
if they're the bronze.
And then if it's the purple fruit,
that will go straight into these barrels
to start fermentation.
The way that you ferment wines,
is that you add yeast into the fruit and let it ferment.
So the fruit wine's different
because it's not high in sugar,
we add quite a lot of sugars.
There's acid, there's other nutrients
that you have to add that you don't
to your grapes in muscadine.
I'm from Georgia so peaches are state fruit
and I like anything with peaches in it
and I heard you make a great peach wine.
Would you like to taste it?
I would.
So this, the peaches came from Chilton County
which you know, is known for it's peaches
here in Alabama.
This is really clear.
It tastes a lot sweeter than it smells
which is, I think, the opposite of the muscadine wine.
This peach one, I think, could be my favorite,
just because I'm partial to peaches.
But what's your favorite one that y'all do?
I have to say it's our blueberry.
If you've ever had a wine that's made from another fruit
like strawberries or peaches or pears,
throw in the comments, I would love to read about it
and hear what your first non-grape fruit wine experience is.
So Ivy, here is our bottling room.
First of all, we bring the wine in
and we have to stabilize it,
maybe back sweeten,
and then we filter it, and it's filtered and ready to go,
so we bottle it and cork it.
And then if we're doing a big batch
we can use our six bottle filler
and we can do about 25 to 50 in a day
using that machine if everybody's on hand.
(light country music)
So here we are at our six acre vineyard at the windmill.
And you see the vines have lost the leaves,
we've harvested the fruit in October.
They're dormant now and we will begin pruning in February.
Here's some dried muscadines on the vine already.
These are raisins.
So this a young vine and we'll prune these back right here
to take all this out and then we will come along this arm
and cut back to about two to three eyes.
And then everywhere there's an eye
there will be buds come out and from that there'll be fruit.
All the fruit is right at the wire
so it makes it easy to harvest in the fall.
Wine making does not stop.
It is a year round thing.
People think that all you do is you grow grapes
and you press it and you make juice and you ferment it
but it's year round.
You have to prune the vines and take care of them
even in the dormant winter months.
We might have December and January to relax,
although we're making wine, bottling wine, it's constant.
I've loved being able to see the process of fermentation
and touring these beautiful vineyards.
It was a please to have you and enjoy your wine
and your good picnic.
Thank you so much.
(light music)
This Bronze Muscadine wine, I think is the perfect balance
of sweetness for the spicy peanut noodle salad.
Y'all, they have such a good variety of ready made foods.
I don't know if I've talked about how much I love
ready made foods, I had such a busy week.
So I went to Publix and got some really awesome
ready made food, like this spicy peanut noodle salad.
It sounded delicious.
It's really spicy.
The spiciness of the noodles is kind of mellowed out
by the sweetness of the wine.
And that's really just an important tip
in food and wine pairing,
if you have no idea where to start,
spicy usually goes with sweet.
Tasting this wine just brings me back to my childhood.
I could sit there for hours and my mom and dad
would be looking for me and I'd be in the grapevines.
I don't know if muscadine wine is going
to be my go to everyday wine,
but I have loved learning about they make it
here at Wills Creek Winery.
If you like what you saw on Hey Y'all today,
be sure to like, follow, subscribe, share and comment.
And if you're watching on YouTube, click the bell.
I'm gonna enjoy the rest of my picnic
and the awesome views that they have here
at this Alabama winery.
Cheers, Y'all.

Trump Lies And Says Voters Are Calling To Express Support For His Border Wall - Duration: 4:41.
mpYesterday in the White House press briefing room, Donald Trump kind of gave a little impromptu,
a rant to reporters in the room where he told them that he is never throughout his entire
presidency, gotten as much support for the wall as he has in the last two weeks.
Now, obviously he's bringing this up because we are in day 14, I believe, of the federal
government partial shutdown, which is 100 percent donald Trump's doing because he wants
$5,000,000,000 for his border wall or border slats.
He doesn't even know what it's going to be anymore.
But he was willing to do this partial government shutdown until he gets that $5 billion.
So he was trying to convince the reporters in that room that the public is absolutely
crazy about the idea for a wall.
They love it and they're all calling him at the White House to let him know that he's
also getting the tweets, just getting the emails.
Uh, somehow.
But here's the thing, he did specifically say that people have been calling the White
House over the last two weeks to let them know how much they love the idea of the wall.
Here's the problem with that.
It's an absolute lie and we can easily verify that that is not happening because the White
House switchboard was shut down as part of the partial government shutdown, and the reporters
know that if you were to call the White House right now, even to express your love and admiration
for Donald Trump's fictitious wall, you would get a prerecorded message and that is it.
You wouldn't be able to talk to the president.
You wouldn't be able to tell them how much you love his wall idea and nobody would be
there to relay that message even if you could.
So Trump in that room full of reporters, once again, lied to their faces about getting all
this support for his wall.
The truth is, yes, there are plenty of conservatives on twitter, including those little fly by
nighters who's 15 minutes of fame is almost up.
People like Ben Shapiro, Tomi Lahren, Charlie Kirk, Candice Owens, they all support the
wall.
Yeah, absolutely.
And again, their clock is reading about 14, 59 at this point, so they're almost halfway
out the door right now.
You also have some other hard core Republicans who say, yes, we need the wall.
You have the MAGA hat wearing supporters tweeting about how much we need the wall, but the majority
of people in this country, the rational thinking once they do not support the idea of a border
wall, in fact the latest polling shows that less than half of the country actually thinks
the wall is a good idea and those numbers continue to drop as more and more people realize
that Mexico is not going to pay for it.
So Donald Trump actually shutting down the government to get the funding for his border
wall is making less people support the idea of a wall because now they realize Mexico's
not the one who's going to pay for it.
And I gotta say though, how gullible were you to begin with?
If you ever thought Mexico was going to pay for this border wall, they made it expressly
clear from the first time Donald Trump ever said that, that it wasn't going to happen.
Trump himself never believed it would, and now he's out there telling us this nonsense
that no, they're paying for it through the savings that we're going to get from this
new trade deal that I have worked out that actually hasn't even been passed by Congress,
so it's technically not even a thing at the moment.
This man is a serial liar.
There is nothing that he is even capable of telling the truth about and more and more
people seem to be waking up to that.
They seem to be understanding what's happening with this man.
Unfortunately at this point, not enough of them yet understand that he is incapable of
telling them the truth.
I think as this year goes on and as we plow further into the Trump administration a tenure,
I think more and more people are going to understand that because it's not just the
big things that Donald Trump is ready to lie about.
It's quite literally at this point, every single thing he talks about, big, small, consequential,
inconsequential.
There is nothing that this man will not lie about.

Understanding Aqualung - Duration: 9:41.
hey, welcome to 12tone! if I had to pick my favorite album of all time, it'd probably
be… well, it'd probably be really hard but eventually I'd settle on Jethro Tull's Aqualung.
it's just so perfect, every song is amazing, and they all tie together without feeling
the same. in fact, back in college, I performed the title track as part of my senior jury,
so today I thought it'd be fun to break it down and see what's going on inside it.
the song starts with this iconic riff: (bang) and this is the part where I'd normally tell
you what key we're in, but here it's not quite that simple. I could make pretty good arguments
for at least three of these notes being the root. we don't have enough information yet,
so I'll just cheat and look ahead at what's coming and… yeah, I don't think there is
one. I think this is an example of what's called atonality. we tend to associate that
word with dissonant styles like Schoenberg's 12-tone serialism, which is pretty much intentionally
designed to be hard to listen to, but really, atonality just means the music doesn't have
an identifiable key center. you can make really beautiful, consonant atonal music: it's just
not built around a single point.
once you're in the right mindset, atonal analysis can actually be a lot simpler than tonal stuff.
like, take this riff: (bang) we could try to guess the implied harmony, like this: (bang)
and then try to explain what those chords are doing, but none of that really gets at
the heart of the riff: it's not a progression, it's a shape. we start on a high note, fall
down pretty far, then we try to walk back up to where we started but the steps keep
getting smaller, first a minor 3rd, then a major 2nd, then a minor 2nd, then right when
we're about to make it we change directions and fall back down again. if that's not telling
a story, I don't know what is.
anyway then the chords come in and we get this. (bang) here, we have three major triads
in an ascending whole-step line, which tends to sound pretty triumphant. it's reminiscent
of what my friend 8-Bit Music Theory might call the Mario Cadence, because a similar
progression is used at the end of many levels in the Super Mario games to mark your success.
but in Aqualung, that success doesn't last very long, because before the last bar of
that rise even ends we get this: (bang) where the progression starts to falter, moving back
and forth between the last two chords and then finally pushing just a little bit higher
before falling all the way back down to where we started. much like the riff, this part
paints a pretty clear and pretty bleak portrait of Aqualung's life.
after that we get this: (bang) and for this section I'm gonna have to reach deep into
my bag of analytical tricks and pull out some Neo-Riemannian analysis. that may sound like
some rocket science stuff, but it's actually just a way of testing how close two chords
are without relating them back to a particular key center, which is useful here 'cause, again,
we don't have one. for example, if we take Eb major and Gb major, we have what's called
a chromatic mediant, where two chords are a third apart but don't share as many notes
as we'd expect. the Eb major uses a G natural, whereas Gb major obviously uses a Gb. Neo-Riemannian
theory tells us that the chromatic mediant relationship is a pretty close one, so this
move feels fairly well-connected.
but we don't go straight from Eb to Gb: the progression quickly dips down to Db first
before jumping up. now, if we were in a key, the move from Db to Gb could be read as V
to I or I to IV. either way it'd feel pretty smooth, and even though the music is atonal,
Neo-Riemannian theory still views this sort of motion, which we might call dominant motion,
as close, so the Gb chord feels pretty well set-up.
in the last bar, we've basically just got a walk-down with some fancy decoration. effectively,
we're starting on that Gb chord again and sliding down to D major, kind of like the
reverse of the walk-up we started with: (bang) but if we just walked straight down it'd sound
boring, so they throw an unexpected B chord in the middle. moving from E to B is dominant
motion, and B to D is another chromatic mediant, so now that we know about Neo-Riemannian theory
we can pretty safely say that both of those motions are close and, thus, smooth. this
section may be full of chords we're not used to seeing next to each other, but with a little
understanding of atonal harmony it all fits together nicely.
this intro also features an arranging trick that we'll see all over this song and, honestly,
all over Tull's work in general: progressive layering. the section starts with just the
electric guitar and some drums. after a couple bars, the vocals come in, accompanied by the
bass and an acoustic guitar. then, on the third time through the progression, we're
joined by a piano and a second electric guitar. building up the orchestra like this helps
lift the momentum of the section, and it keeps it interesting even though we're still playing
the same thing.
I want to talk about that second electric guitar for a minute, though, 'cause it's doing
something really cool. as we saw earlier, it's important that the chords we're hearing
are all major, but if you play a major triad through distortion, it… doesn't sound great.
distortion amplifies the inharmonic, unpleasant parts of the chords you run through it, and
even something as consonant as a major triad isn't safe, so instead what they do is have
the lead guitar just play the root and 5th, which sound fine together, then the other
part fills in the major 3rd. that puts it through a separate distortion filter so it
doesn't interfere with the other notes, giving you a distorted major triad that still sounds
pretty major.
anyway, from there we go into the… verse? I don't know, sections are weird in this song,
but it's the bit that sounds like this: (bang) here, it seems like we've finally settled
into a key: F major. sort of: the section actually starts on G minor, which in this
analysis would be the II chord. starting on the II is interesting, because coming out
of the atonal section we just heard it almost implies that G is the root, but looking at
the rest of the section, and especially the melody, which ends with a big ol' resolution
to F, that doesn't seem to be the case. still, the fake-out is interesting.
that G minor quickly drops down to the actual I chord, F. we sit there for a while, then
move to C, the V chord. traditionally, the V chord wants to resolve back to the I, but
instead, Anderson subverts that expectation by moving to C minor, darkening the harmony
and denying us the nice, simple resolution we wanted. from there he moves back to G minor,
which even though we're in a key now I think is still probably best explained by that Neo-Riemannian
dominant motion thing, and then we drop back down to F again and wrap up the progression.
this section also features that progressive layering we were talking about, starting with
just acoustic, adding in bass, then finally piano and drums.
eventually, though, we wind up in the third section, which starts like this: (bang) we'll
talk about the chords in a minute, but first, let's address the elephant in the room: the
tempo. this section is a whole lot faster than the others. but it's not just a random
new speed: it's using a technique called a metric modulation, which is where we shift
from one tempo to another related one. basically, if we take the half note from the old tempo
(bang) and split it up into three parts instead of two (bang) we get the quarter note for
the new tempo. (bang) we're effectively speeding up by 50%, but comparing it to the old tempo
helps show how the two are connected.
on the chords, though, it's pretty simple: we're moving back and forth between G minor
and F major, the II and I chords of the key. or, honestly, I think the new emphasis, coupled
with a melody that leans more on G than F, implies that this section may actually be
in the key of G minor, but it's hard to tell for sure, and since it's sandwiched between
two sections in F I think it's simpler to just read it all in the same key. if you'd
rather analyze these as the I minor and bVII chords, though, I think that's totally valid.
after a bit of that, we have a section of C minor, then F major, then we see the verse-ish
section again, but played at the new tempo and with the percussive pattern we've been
seeing.
then we get to the breakdown, which is just the verse progression again but with each
chord played for twice as long. I won't dwell too long on the guitar line here, but I do
want to briefly address it because it has an amazing interest curve: it starts with
small little fragments, leaving a lot of space between them. the fragments get more and more
rhythmically intricate, until it comes to a peak about halfway through, then suddenly
switches back to very simple, three-note shapes before finally moving into a huge, super-busy
walk-up. it's a great illustration of how dramatic builds don't have to be linear: you
can give your listener a chance to breathe between exciting moments. it helps keep them
engaged.
anyway, that leads us into the solo, which is over a completely new progression: (bang)
here, I think we have switched to G minor, starting on the I chord, dropping to bVI,
then walking back up to I, kind of like that Mario Cadence from earlier but ending on a
minor chord. at the end of the solo the song suddenly drops back to the original tempo
and everyone disappears except Anderson's voice and acoustic, playing the verse progression
again. it's a huge, dramatic shift in tone, breaking up the massive hard rock vibe with
something incredibly folky. it's Jethro Tull in a nutshell.
after a little bit of that, we suddenly go back to… the intro. this repetition gives
the song a really cool sense of circularity, like it's just a day in Aqualung's life and
he's gonna do the whole thing over again tomorrow. nothing changes, he's still gonna be sitting
on that park bench. it's a really weird song structure, but for the story they're telling,
it totally works. then the whole thing ends with what I like to call a Vegas ending, where
the whole band just goes wild and plays a bunch of stuff all at once. I don't really
have a good narrative explanation for that, but it sounds awesome, and sometimes that's
enough.
and that's pretty much it, but before we go, quick announcement: there's a 12tone discord
server now. if you've made it this far I'm gonna guess you like music theory, so why
not join and talk about music theory with other folks who also like music theory? also
there's custom elephant emojis, so that's fun. link in the description. oh, also! we're
switching things around on patreon so from now on songs will be chosen by our patrons
through a poll, so if you want to help us pick the next one, just head on over to Patreon.
bye!
anyway, thanks for watching, thanks to Patreon patron Elias Helfer for suggesting the song!
