Hey all you budding musicians out there, It's episode number seventy seven, and it's time
for another new Learn Flute Podcast.
I'm Rebecca Fuller, and today we're going to talk about allowing yourself to be a beginner.
Let's get motivated:
Well good morning Learn Flute Online!
Well, it's morning again here at my place right now, and the sun is shining.
It's a great day for some new musical inspiration.
I actually have had some of the best music playing in the background as I bustled around
the home and office in preparation for this audio and the work day.
I'm kind of excited because I have a whole new set of flute tutorial videos I'm going
to video today.
They're for you!
So I hope you are having a beautiful day also and are keeping your goals of learning how
to play the flute front and center because I am here to help you with yet another piece
of that musical puzzle today.
I want you to evaluate yourself for just a quick second to find out if you are a patient
learner or if you're a bit more on the anxious side… what do you think?
The reason I ask is because I actually think it's kind of normal to be a bit anxious,
and especially if you're an adult who is learning something new that you can clearly
see the end result of.
You probably just want to get there now.
Right?
Well, join the crowd..
We're kind of in a society and time of more immediate gratification aren't we?
We basically are so blessed to be able to have the technologies and advances that we
do have nowadays, it really is marvelous- but it kind of creates some antsy-ness which
isn't quite so conducive when learning a skill such as becoming a musician.
We tend to look at other who have what we are striving for ourselves as far as success
goes whether it be a healthy body, a beautiful place to live, or a high level skill such
as playing a musical instrument or even singing really well.
We think that they must have been born successful, or that it just happened overnight for them…
and why?
This one is obvious - it's because we weren't around to witness the journey they were on
for years and years to get there.
Well, today I'm here to remind us all - me included- that each of our paths is unique,
and that everyone starts at the very awkward beginning of every worthwhile journey.
I think we can use almost any subject to illustrate this concept, but for today I'll pick on
myself because I've recently been working on getting out of my comfort zone a little…
Ok- I'm going to admit here right now that I've always been kind of afraid of heights.
Well, at least I've always 'thought' I was afraid of heights because I remember
being basically paralyzed on the high dive as a kid at the pool.
Inching my way out on that skinny little plank with no hand-holds was terrifying..
Even though when you think about it- it's kind of funny because I would inch out there
to the end with my heart racing and my mouth dry obviously because I was afraid of falling..
Right?
Well, then what do you think I would do once I made it out there?
I would jump!
Because that's what my goal was in the first place.
It was completely irrational I understand now.
So, I bring this up because just within the past few weeks I've decided it's high
time I get over this fear and learn to push past some little insecurities and unreasonable
thoughts that only have stopped me from having a lot of fulfillment and fun.
You're probably wondering what I've decided to do?
Well, I'll tell you.
I joined a club of ladies who do some kind of crazy fun stuff like rappelling down 200
foot cliffs and drop themselves into a slot canyon pool and swim for hours with their
packs on their backs all in the name of adventure, learning, friendship, and fun.
So, in preparation for the first of one of these adventures I've been learning how
to get myself good and ready to hurl myself off of a very steep rocky straight down cliff,
and I've talked to myself about liking it.
Guess what?
It's working.
I have given myself permission to be a beginner, and to allow others to help me.
My friends are so supportive, and their motivational instruction is priceless.
Today I dropped off a cliff that was so tall that the people standing at the bottom looked
like little ants.
When I reached the bottom the first time I was so proud of myself!
And, I celebrated joyfully as did all of my friends.
What fun!
I think I have gone through stages where I've been pretty hard on myself for being a beginner.
Are you the same way?
But, over the past few years I've been learning to replace these harsh judgmental thoughts
with more kindness, patience, and understanding.
We all start at the beginning of somewhere, right?
Another example is this here website I've created for you fine online students.
It's Learn Flute Online dot com.
I had a very strong desire to take my enthusiasm and knowledge for teaching and helping others
learn to become musicians and better people through playing the flute.
When I first began, I had no idea how to get my teaching into a digital-tangible form for
you.
It was hard, and I spent months not even sleeping enough because I was determined to figure
it out for you.
My first videos are pretty stiff, but full of the vital information any beginner flute
player desperately needs to build a proper foundation for learning, and I'm proud of
what it has done to help so many of you learn.
Basically, I had to learn to put the blinders on as I remembered that I was at the beginning
of a journey just as those who come to learn online to learn the flute online from me and
they are also at the beginning, I would call it their flute-learning-inauguration as well.
There are a few quotes I've heard that refer to this concept as "remembering not to compare
our chapter one with someone else's chapter twenty."
Have you ever heard this?
Well, it's completely true.
We all start somewhere, and if there's anything you take away today it's that we can allow
ourselves to be beginners.
The subjects may change from year to year, but the sure-way to find more success is to
practice being comfortable and patient being at the starting line.
Over and over again.
Because after that, all it takes is putting one foot in front of another, following sequences
set for us by examples of someone just ahead.
Then, we'll find where we are going for sure.
What a great subject!
I think I could talk personal development and motivation self-help all day long.
I'd love to know if this subject interested you, and if you have any thoughts about it.
There is a comment section here where you can leave your questions or ramblings on the
subject.
We're all friends here at Learn Flute Online, and just like my ambitious lady friends who
like to challenge their comfort zones constantly, we are supportive and happy to help at any
time.
I invite you to come inside the membership levels at Learn Flute Online dot com to
take a flute lesson this week.
Everything is there for the taking.
It's all in sequential order.
I take you step by step through what it takes to learn and feel confident.
The lesson modules, the videos, and articles I point you to, the special email series you
receive for your particular membership level, and of course all these audios and other audios
in each lesson.
I've made them just for you.
Again, I'm Rebecca Fuller your flute instructor and biggest cheerleader.
Good luck this week!
