We live in the digital age where the Internet can either work to your benefit in regards
to accessibility to information and networking, or…you could be inspired by something you
see and it can turn dark really quick.
Recently, a dangerous new hashtag challenge has surfaced, causing kids nationwide to suffer
from serious burns and unfortunately in one case, death.
Kids are taking on the "Hot Water Challenge".
The challenge consists of throwing boiling hot water on a friend without them knowing.
Or, on another occasion, a child was dared to drink boiling water through a straw and
it actually resulted in death.
This past Monday, "friends" poured boiling water on an 11-year old girl by the name of
Jamoneisha Merritt from the Bronx (show headline).They threw the water on her face as she was sleeping
and she was badly burned.
Last month, Wesley Smith from North Carolina, who's only 10-years old, suffered severe burns
after he and his step-brother attempted the challenge.
And back in late July, an 8-year-old girl named Ki'ari Pope of Florida died because
her cousin dared her to drink boiling water through a straw.
Pope did the challenge several months before her death, but the water was so hot that it
burned her mouth and throat and she had to receive a tracheotomy.
As a result, she suffered longlasting respiratory complications and the night she passed away,
she told her family she couldn't breathe, and then she lost consciousness.
The victims' parents are speaking out to other parents to make sure that they monitor
their children because they're so easily influenced by the dangerous challenges on
the Internet.
Pope's aunt Diana Johnson spoke with a local CBS partner:
"Parents, talk to your kids about these challenges.
Don't just give them your phone and let them go by.
Watch what they are doing."
Wesley Smith's step-father Jimmy Daugherty spoke with another CBS affiliate and said:
"Watch what your kids are doing on the Internet.
When we got to the hospital and I actually seen it, I thought the poor boy had been through
a war."
The #HotWaterChallenge isn't the first internet craze to claim lives.
Back in 2011, Australian man Acton Beale was participating in the Planking Challenge and
unfortunately fell to his death while trying to plank on a balcony railing.
Kids are not the only ones that need to be cautious of what they do.
We all need to be careful about the things we indulge in, especially media, because if
it doesn't result in physical harm, it can even affect our subconscious.
