"I'm leaving this message.

Hopefully nobody else ever has to see this.

Yesterday, at about 10 o'clock in the morning, I wanted to go explore my new state, Arizona."

I didn't have any water now.

I had zero water.

And I was getting very uncomfortable.

I had gotten out.

I knew that I had to make it look like I was like a distressed motorist.

So I got out and I got a bunch of rocks and I made a giant "H" in a small clearing that

I was parked next to.

Nobody knew I was gone.

There was nobody to report me missing -- which is a big mistake, you know.

It's not like I have a wife waiting at home with a cold dinner.

I told friends about this cool place I was going to check out some day.

I just went on a whim.

I came to a fork in the road and I had to go right or left.

I took a right.

It was all uphill.

And I'm just shaking my head.

I don't know how much more of this I can do.

And that's when Troy came around the corner and he, you know, he's on a dirt bike.

Turned out that Troy was my guardian angel.

We got down to Lake Pleasant and Troy got off the bike and said you got to get this

guy help.

The sheriff, he got down there right away.

I came home and was so glad that everybody was so wonderful.

There's so many wonderful people out there.

One of the things I have learned and keep learning at Thumbtack is that

leadership is above all else about self-awareness.

You know, people often get caught up in the tactics of being a leader,

say, running a good meeting,

giving a speech, things like that.

And those matter and those help, but the most important thing is self-awareness,

because you have to understand how you come across

to be able to influence others,

you have to understand what you are naturally capable

and what you are naturally incapable of,

so that you can build a team around you in the right way

and you ultimately have to foster an environment of trust

and if people don't believe that you recognize your own flaws and your own strength,

then they're probably not going to trust you to recognize those in them

so I always tell people, you know,

first and foremost hold the mirror to yourself

that's how you become more self-aware

and ultimately, I think, how you become a better leader.

You know, more people are frightened of public speaking than they are of death,

so you know, with that as a backdrop.

A possibly counterintuitive tip that I give people is to

really embrace silence.

We think that content is king,

we think that content and what we're saying

is the most important thing, and of course, it is important,

but if you pull into the toolbox of the actor,

if you can reach into the toolbox of the actor,

one of the things that you have available to you

is dramatic pause.

And the audience leans in. What's going to happen next?

And that's I think a very powerful tool that we can use,

and one of the things that's wonderful about the pause, about silence,

is that you can take a breath,

you can think about what you want to say

and that's a very powerful tool to have available to you.

Retirement Stories: Julie - Duration: 2:12.

Originally I'm from Toledo, Ohio but I've lived in Colorado 35-plus years.

So, to me this is home.

Before I started working with Allstate I didn't have a retirement plan.

And I was just like any other 20-year-old who wanted to go out and have fun

A lot of people don't have that long-term vision, that what they do today is going to

affect their tomorrow.

So we help them by creating something that will be there for the long term.

He really helped me see the importance and the value of starting young.

If I started young that it would become just a normal day-to-day thing, and I wouldn't

miss the money that I was investing

When I went through my divorce it was very rough on me emotionally and financially.

I'd never been on my own.

I went from living with my mother to living with my husband, so I wasn't sure I would

financially be able to take care of myself.

Eddie helped me a lot after the divorce.

Telling me, "It's gonna be okay," you know, "You can do this."

You can still have your life policy.

You can still invest in your 401K.

You can still invest in a Roth.

I was able to purchase my condo.

We also did some movement to diversify my financial portfolio.

Working with Allstate really helped me to determine what I needed for my future retirement

by visualizing it, writing down what all my debts were and then determining what I need

to do for my retirement and for my future.

Every year we spend some time going through my financial portfolio looking at where my

money is invested.

The progress in my retirement has been awesome.

It's very rewarding to sit down and see what I've been able to accomplish by just

being consistent and persistent about putting money away.

This process works.

You have to have a sense of humor in a marriage or you're in trouble.

Money never meant anything to me.

As long as I had enough to take care of my family and food on the table.

I didn't think about what I needed to have if I retired.

Before we worked with Allstate, we had a bad experience with another company and it wound

up costing us money.

We didn't feel secure, we were not satisfied at all.

Trust.

That's the name of the game.

You need to trust someone.

This is a life savings after 50 some odd years of working that you're going to put into somebody's

hands.
