It's not Breastfeeding that Makes Babies Smart. It's You. - Duration: 2:48.
If you google "breastfeeding", you will be bombarded by articles touting the benefits
of this most natural of nourishment choices.
From the economic savings, to the more pleasant fecal odor, mothers are encouraged that "breast
is best".
Among the benefits frequently touted are those associated with IQ.
I saw this article linking breastfeeding and higher IQ on CNN.com a couple of years ago:
Mothers want to do what is best for their babies, and the pressure in this arena can
get intense.
In fact, many mothers report significant anxiety associated with the pressure to breast feed.
And women who are unable to breast feed can be pushed deeper into depression because of
that.
And here's a little secret.
There have been no randomized trials of breastfeeding.
Ever.
And we all know that a lot of factors go into the decision to breastfeed, and for how long.
In other words, breastfeeding may be a proxy for any number of healthful behaviors, or
for socioeconomic status.
The question is: Does breastmilk make your kids smart?
Or do moms who choose to breastfeed have smart kids?
In response to this question, we have this article, appearing in the journal Pediatrics.
The study looked at 9,854 children from the Growing Up in Ireland infant cohort.
These kids were followed from 9 months to 5 years of age.
During that time they had multiple neurocognitive and other assessments, and moms were asked
about their breastfeeding history.
Right off the bat, you see huge differences in baseline characteristics between moms who
breastfeed and those who don't.
This table shows you the amount of confounding we have in studies like this.
Women who breastfed were much more likely to have a resident partner, were higher educated
and older.
Roughly a quarter of women who breastfed had a smoker in the dwelling during pregnancy
compared to 42% of those who didn't breastfeed.
And, as anyone with more than one kid can attest, the more siblings in the dwelling,
the less breastfeeding happens.
Now, since breastfeeding is a proxy for so many things, it will be no surprise to find
that, unadjusted, breastfed kids were better at problem solving, vocabulary, and had better
conduct.
But once the kids were matched on all those baseline variables, those relationships disappeared.
When they looked just at women who breastfed for more than 6 months, there was a bit of
signal that there was reduced hyperactivity in the kids at age 3.
But it disappeared by age 5.
In other words, if you are a women who chooses not to breastfeed, or can't breastfeed for
some reason, don't feel like you are betraying your child's future.
Breastfeeding is great.
It's cheap, it helps you lose weight, and it has some antibodies in there.
But when it comes to childhood development, it is the loving bond of a mother and infant,
perhaps manifested in breastfeeding, but not mediated by breastfeeding, that leads to good
development.

So every Friday, I have everyone have some fun time
and they get to clean their desk.

Legendary News Journalist Tells Sean Hannity That He's Bad For America - Duration: 3:49.
This past weekend, on an interview that aired on CBS, legendary news anchor Ted Koppel told
Sean Hannity that he is bad for America.
The answer to that question, the fact that yes, Sean Hannity, you're bad for America,
actually came from a question from Sean Hannity, where he was trying to defend his cable news
punditry, rather than reporting.
You see, during the interview, Koppel was talking about the need for honest factual
news reporting in the corporate controlled media.
Hannity defended what he does, saying that it's punditry.
It's political commentary and opinion, not news.
Hannity has for a long time told us he's not a newsman, he's an opinion guy.
Then, Hannity asked, "Do you think I'm bad for America?"
To which Koppel, a man who has spent his entire life as a television news journalist, not
commentator, told Hannity, "Yes.
You are bad for America."
Ted Koppel could not be more correct in his assessment of both Sean Hannity and the current
state of cable news in the United States.
These outlets are not news reporters anymore.
There's no journalist.
They're simply opinion givers and commentators.
They look at things that have happened and say, "Oh, well wow.
Here's my opinion on this thing."
They don't go out there and discover this.
They don't go out there and find the evidence of corporate fraud or corporate misdeeds or
disgusting foreign policy actions by the federal government.
You know, things that we used to do, back in the 60's and 70's and a little bit into
the 80's, when we actually uncovered things and reported that.
Today, all it is is commentary by these overpaid idiots who couldn't even get a college education.
Yet, we have millions of people in this country that tune in everyday to get their marching
orders from people like Sean Hannity.
That's what Koppel is talking about, him being bad for this country.
The American public is not hungry for news.
They're not hungry for facts.
They're not hungry for statistics.
They want their political ideology marching orders, and Sean Hannity comes on air and
delivers those every single night.
Are they based in reality?
Absolutely not.
Bill O'Reilly does the same thing and Tucker Carlson.
You can go through the list almost every single person on Fox News.
It's the same thing with MSNBC.
We're not getting factual reporting anymore.
We're getting the Trump is bad stories.
Trump tweeted a thing stories.
That's not what we expect from cable news.
We need more.
We need reporting.
We need people going undercover and performing investigations.
You have the resources to do that.
We don't.
Most media outlets do not, but you do.
That's why we depend on you.
We can get news and opinion from anyone in this country.
Everybody's got an opinion on things, but you're the one's with the resources to go
out there and find out what's really happening.
That's why Ted Koppel says, that you are bad for the United States, because you failed
in your duty to keep people informed, and you failed in your duty to go out there and
find out what's really happening.
