Why do Americans spend so much time on small talk that nobody actually cares about?
It's a total waste of time...or is it?
As I mentioned in my video about the American hi, how are you?
I often get questions about Americans being fake or insincere.
And this often connects into questions about small talk.
So today I'm going to try to explain why small talk the best that I can.
Let's start by saying that I, personally, usually enjoy a little small talk, but not
all Americans do.
Small talk is more common in the U.S. and more a part of the culture there but that
definitely does not mean that all Americans love small talk.
Okay, so when is small talk used and what should you talk about?
Really good question, and one that is very hard to answer because, from growing up in
the U.S., I just kind of feel when it's right and intuitively know which topics to
talk about and which are off-limits by reading the situation and the people around me.
Because in the end, small talk topics really, really vary depending on many variables, including
who you're talking to and where and when.
Small talk at a party with someone I've met a couple times would go a little deeper
than small talk with the cashier at the grocery store.
There's surface-level small talk, like about traffic or all that crazy construction going
on around town, and then there's small talk that makes a bit more of a connection, maybe
where you went on vacation or your plans for an upcoming holiday.
And often, especially at a party, small talk will start out as an ice breaker, so something
more surface level, and then get more personal as the evening moves on and you start to feel
more comfortable with the person you're talking to.
So in that way, small talk helps get me feeling more comfortable at a party and feeling more comfortable
to talk about other things.
I can often tell from small talk if I have anything in common with the other person or
if maybe I should move along and find someone else to talk to.
But I can at least give you some topics that are not good for small talk: politics, money,
sex, religion, or basically anything too personal.
For example, jumping right away into personal medical problems is not really good for general
small talk.
To answer one particular small talk question that I got: if you're a cashier at a store
for example, don't you get bored having the same small talk over and over and over
again so many times every day?
Well, from my own personal experience, no.
I didn't work in a supermarket, but I did work in a hotel at the reception desk, and
I can tell you that I truly enjoyed making small talk with the people checking in.
They'd often tell me about where they were traveling from, what they had planned for
their vacation; we would chat about local restaurants.
Some people shared more about their trips and others shared less, and it didn't get boring
because the conversations really changed depending on the people.
And, yeah, I really enjoyed making that connection with them.
Which brings me to the question of why small talk.
Why do people do it?
Isn't it a waste of time?
For me personally, because it makes a connection with another human being on this planet.
A connection that sometimes is just really, really quick and stays right at the surface,
and other times does lead to more in-depth conversations and maybe even friendship.
Let's say I'm just not having a great day.
I spill my coffee in the morning, I stub my toe against the door frame, whatever, it's
not going well.
Then I stop by the store and the cashier makes a little small talk with me.
It brings me out of my bad mood.
We laugh about a TV show or something funny that her dog did.
And suddenly I find myself leaving the store with a smile on my face.
The small talk wasn't a deep ever-lasting connection, but the connection we made did
genuinely put me in a better mood, and then I take that better mood, for example, into
the office, where I'm then kinder to people than I would have been as Grumpy Dana, and
they're in turn then kinder to other people as well, and on and on and on.
And there's at least one study to back me up.
In a study published in 2014 in Social Psychological and Personality Science, researchers from
the University of British Columbia found that the study participants who had some kind of
social interaction with the barista at a cafe ended up feeling more of a sense of belonging
and in the end happier than the people who had just tried to be as efficient as possible.

I keep getting requests from young developers asking me to feature their app in my video.
It's really hard for any upcoming talent to get recognised, so today ill feature a
few apps that can help them get some exposure with your support . Please do encourage them
by checking out the apps from the description section below if you like them.

The first app is Find Phone With SMS.
See, this application's main aim is to find your phone when you misplace it at home or
your friend tries to hide your phone and even if your phone is in silent mode you just need
to grab someone's phone and just send a text message with the keywords you set to
trigger a particular action.
The phone start ringing if you send the message with the keyword alert or if that doesn't
work for some reason you can send another keyword to get the details of the exact GPS
location of the phone.
You can customize the keywords to trigger a particular action like change the keyword
from alert to catch him, which is a nice touch.
The app is simple just open and set the keywords you like and hit set password and you are
all set.
The specialty here is, you just need a messaging application and a main balance left.
That's it.

The next one is a game called Square Swipe and its by Sushanth.
A game should be simple to play with one hand and this is one of those games.
You just need to swipe to the direction which is displayed on the screen And as the game
progresses it's obviously going to hard but that's when the fun starts.
It's a test for your spontaneity.
It has material look to it but the only problem anyone would face is ADS keep coming everywhere
except when you are playing the game.
Nice little Game.
And finally we have an interesting app called tipster by Daniel, It's a tip calculator
as well as currency converter.
when it's time to pay the bill This app helps you decide how much you should tip, just by
entering how much percent would you generally give for a service, And enter the number of
diners, Now enter the amount that you spent in the restaurant, And rate the experience
with the restaurant you had and it will automatically calculate the tip you would like to give based
on the inputs you just entered.
It can also calculate the tip for each person on the table.
For a tip calculator the design elements are perfect.
You may not use this app daily but it's nice to have it.

How To Make DIY Cat Activity Tent/Gym for Your Cat! Fun Craft Idea To Help Your Cat Be More Active! - Duration: 5:25.
Hi everyone!
Do you wanna know how to make this really fun activity gym for your cat ?
Me and Rags have a tutorial this week for you for this activity gym that we think your cat will absolutely love!
Ok, so all you need is for your DIY cat activity gym is a hula hoop, some fabric of your choice
A selection of cat toys that can be hung up using either ribbon
Or thick wool, a good pair of sciccors
And a big chunk of foam
Which we are going to be using for the bottom of gym
And to put it all together either a hot glue gun, a good fabric glue
Or if you are a clover plugs, unlike me, you can sew it
I'm not very good at sewing so I'm gonna go with hot glue gun
Ok, so the first thing you wanna do is take your hula hoop and cut it in to two separate semi circles
Ok, so after cutting your hoola hoop want you want to do is take your foam and measure out how much you need
By using the two halve of hula hoop
Once you've marked it out go ahead with your scissors and cut out where you have marked
So once you've marked out your foam, put it on to the fabric that you have and mark out where it is
Just so that you've got enough fabric to cover it up just to make it look a bit nicer
And then again, take these scissors - cut it out
Ok, so once you cut that out, I'm going to use hot glue gun, but if you are a lot more clever than me
You can
Sew it on
So just attach the fabric to your foam
Next take your two halves of a hula hoop
And if you want you can leave them plain,
But what I'm going to do is get some more of this fabric and wrap it around the hula hoops halves
So that they match
Ok so now we have our two halves of the hula hoops that are covered in the same fabric as the base
Ok, so now's the time to attach the hula hoops to the base
Now now get some of the off cuts of your fabric
Line it up with the corner of the foam and then cut out a little triangle, like this along here
Do that for each corner of your base
Ok, then you wanna take your little triangles and attach them on two sides to your base
Ok, so what we have here is four pockets
At the each corner of your base
And so take your two halves of hula hoop and just slot them in
Ok, so here we go! It is slotted in!
You can glue them down if you want - it will probably make it a little bit more secure
Ok, so they are now attached at each corner, but to make it more secure
Attach the two hula hoop halves together using ribbon or strong wool
Now to attach these take your ribbon or your wool and just tighten
On to the crossed hula hoops
Ok and here is our finished cat activity gym!

One of the things that's been helping
Experiment 27 stay afloat and stay profitable
is accountability from mentors.
And, in this video I want to run through,
we've been doing a monthly mentor update,
basically there's a list of people
that I've been sending information on our company to,
and I wanna run through one of these exact updates
to show you the benefits of doing it,
and give you an easy example you can use
to keep your mentors updated with your business.
This is the exact update that I sent out in November.
You can see it's got the good news,
the bad and the ugly news, it's got our revenue for
the month of November, 2016 in here, our pipeline,
our big strategic questions, and links to past updates.
The reason why I send this out is
one of the most valuable things that
you have in your network that you're probably
not taking advantage of are other entrepreneurs
or other business owners that want to follow your story,
and also want to give you feedback
and that can help you out.
So, sending these updates out that have your exact revenue,
you don't have to reveal these publicly,
but sending it to, like, five or six people
will hold you accountable, right.
You'll know that you have to report
on how your business is doing every month,
so it'll keep you doing it,
and then also, you'll get really valuable advice.
I've gotten some great advice from the people
that I've been sending these out to.
This idea came from Techstars.
Here's a post on the Techstars blog from 2016
that goes over a monthly investor update.
We don't have investors at Experiment 27,
so I tweaked it and then just sending it out to mentors.
So, I'm gonna link that down in the description.
You can check out that post.
And, that brings us to what to include,
and in this, I'm gonna run through
our actual November, 2016 numbers.
It's far enough in the past that it's okay to reveal,
plus I think I already revealed this
in a past video, so it's totally fine.
So, the good, we crossed the 400,000 ARR mark,
added another 100k in 30 days, lol,
talked about how we hired eight people,
how we had one refund versus what we were having before,
which was a high refund rate, I was talking about
how good our sales team is, nothing really bad,
and then our key performance indicators here.
So, last month's actual revenue,
this month's actual revenue, forecast
and then how we did versus the forecast last month.
And then, also the marketing pipeline,
talkin' what's coming, and then questions
that I have for the people, and then also any asks.
So, whether they have favors they can give,
you ask about that there, and then link to the past updates.
All of our past updates are in a Google drive
so anyone can go back and see what happened in the past.
And it's as simple as that.
Just by putting the numbers down
and sending them to your mentors,
you're going to improve, right.
What gets measured gets managed,
and what gets measured publicly
and has embarrassment tied to it
is more likely to improve over time,
as I've seen with the revenue for our company
going up every single month, except for December, 2016.
And, the last part is where do you get the mentor list?
Right, who are these people that I'm emailing this to?
Well, they're trusted people in my circle.
So, one of them is one of my
former bosses who I really look up to.
Another one is a friend that runs a business that
I randomly met staying in a hacker house in San Francisco.
And then a few others are bloggers
and YouTubers that I really look up to.
One that specifically asked for updates on the company
after I interviewed him on this YouTube channel,
and then the others that I've just
been sending without permission.
One unsubscribed, but then the other
is still getting the updates and loves 'em.
So, that's the way to do it.
Do I recommend just spamming these updates
to all of your mentors and seeing who responds?
I do recommend it because most people
are interested in this type of thing,
especially if you're actually crushing it.

I was in Poland from the 6th to the 15th of March
for a youth exchange
organized by a Polish organization
the main theme was ecology
since I am really interested in this topic
I applied for this project in January.
I was selected with 8 Italians
and 36 other people coming from
Macedonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
We were all reunited in the same place
You know, I love traveling
alone mostly
meeting new people is one of my favorite things about traveling
to be in contact with locals and learn from different cultures
for this reason this project seemed the right opportunity
In this video I would like to show you how these projects work
called Erasmus+
which receive grants provided by the European Commission
One of the things I really enjoyed during the project
was sharing the meals all together
from breakfast to dinner
We ate local food, so Polish food
and traditional dishes

There was a play-room where we could play pool, table-football and dance.
Different entertainment activities were scheduled each day
We had energizers - games we played all together - and workshops
There was also the opportunity to discuss
about different themes of our interest.
our team from Italy talked about sustainable tourism
so we gave some helpful tips to organize eco-friendly trips
other teams discussed about other branches of ecology
which is a wide topic
another team explained the environmental impacts of the clothing industry
This was a truly wonderful experience
for many reasons
Obviously it is non-formal learning.
