To say that Sonic fans are excited for Sonic Mania is an understatement.
Here is a game made by some of the most respected people in the community who have proven themselves
to Sega, coming together to celebrate the history of the blue hedgehog.
It's a return to the classic days of the series on the Genesis while updating with
modern ideas and healthy dose of love.
And it's evident in every frame, every animation, every callback.
But is this enough to make it worthy of Sonic's Genesis legacy?
There is story in Sonic Mania, told through pantomime and audience intuition.
Eggman has discovered a Time Stone embedded in Angel Island and uses it to not only enhance
five of his Egg Robos into the new Hard-Boiled Heavies, but to teleport Sonic,Tails, and
Knuckles away, forcing them to travel through both old and new Zones alike to stop the evil
doctor.
It's very simple but never gets in the way of the true star of the show, the gameplay
itself.
Sonic and his friends control beautifully, carrying that same sense of weight and speed
from the old days.
Every loop, hill, or platforming section feels just like I remember and gives the sense that
I'm simply playing a new entry on the Genesis.
Sonic controls just as he did before, able to jump and spin dash as well as use the special
abilities of Fire, Electric, and Bubble Shields.
He also has a new ability in the form of the Drop Dash, but I honestly never found much
of a use for it.
It feels like it's meant for speedrunning rather than normal gameplay, which is fitting
considering this is Sonic.
Neither Tails or Knuckles can perform the Drop Dash or use the Elemental Shields'
special abilities.
But Tails can still fly for a short time while Knuckles can glide and climb walls.
And all of these moves tie in so well to the level design.
There are 12 Zones in total and each one offers up a fun and fast experience.
There are so many routes to take and secrets to find that even after three full playthroughs
of the game, I still don't feel like I've seen it all.
It's that element of classic Sonic that I love so much.
You can go fast if you want to, but if you'd prefer to explore and attempt new routes,
it's still a great time.
That has always been the key to Sonic for me and Mania nails it.
Unfortunately, there aren't very many new Zones in the game.
Only 4 are completely original, but they are definite standouts.
They're all unique in their own ways from everything that came before while still feeling
like a Sonic level.
I honestly do wish there were more new levels, but the old levels aren't really old.
Fans will absolutely recognize some of the level design, but the added elements from
across the series, in combinations that I would never expect, work extremely well and
make them feel familiar yet unique.
There's so much more to say on Sonic Mania.
I still haven't had time to talk about the new Special Stages, the return of the Blue
Spheres as bonus stages, the unlockable content that's sure to surprise, and the music that
is just perfection.
I love Sonic Mania and want to talk more about it.
The problem is, I simply don't have the time yet as the embargo only allows for so
much coverage, and we have to abide by that.
