Youtube daily Aug 8 2017

(The news starting at the right time)

(We Like Zines News)

Hello, I'm Lee Gyeonggyu.

Today is the day I make the third book.

This book is a bit different.

Out of the 5 political parties in Korea,

3 parties have female party heads.

Now there are the most congresswomen

we've ever had in congress.

And in this regime, for the first time ever

it looks like 30% of the ministries

will be headed by women.

It is the era of female politicians.

It is the era of women.

We'll meet two female politicians of Korea.

Congresswoman Na Kyungwon

and Congresswoman Son Hyewon.

We will talk about the problems they face

as female politicians as well as their aspirations.

(Wink)

(Moving on without commercials)

(One day in July at a quiet countryside cafe district)

Should we do that?

(Meet our guests)

(Na Kyungwon of the Liberty Korea Party)

(Son Hyewon of the Democratic Party of Korea)

After all we went through

I don't think it suits me to be a congresswoman

that doesn't take action.

(Son Hyewon says what needs to be said!)

You should resign! Resign immediately!

(The Saenuri party was disturbing a hearing)

Resign at once!

- Shut your mouth. / - What?

Shut your mouth.

(Let's proceed with the hearing)

(She's all about the facts)

(A successful brand designer of 30 years)

(Started as spokesperson for the Democratic Party)

(She became a member of congress in May 2016)

(Son Hyewon has become a star at hearings)

What we want to know is

why didn't anyone at the Blue House

do anything when so many were dying?

And now you talk about life vests.

Our people are in despair as this is happening.

If you all weren't so slow to move,

the Choi Soonsil incident wouldn't have gone that far.

I believe that Woo Byungwoo is a man

that takes the people for fools

and he's a very bad seed.

At the age of 70 you sided with the daughter

of a dictator and committed wicked deeds.

Now you'll be ending your career in prison.

(Congresswoman Son is the new tough girl)

I feel good becoming the opposition party.

Don't be like that.

Do you know how hard it is to be the ruling party?

(Na Kyungwon has served 4 terms in congress)

(Studied law at Seoul National University)

(Started politics as an aide to Lee Hoichang)

(Was elected as a congresswoman)

(She became the spokesperson for Hannara Party)

(She was called Ice Princess for her icy charisma)

(I'll freeze you!)

(Was elected for congress in the 17th, 18th)

(19th and 20th legislative elections)

(The only person in her party to serve 4 terms)

I have spoken often as a spokesperson in the past.

Now I will talk about my politics.

I will appoint a diplomatic reunification committee.

(Appointed head of foreign affairs and trade in 2015)

(She has greater political weight and influence)

(Powerful and elite congresswoman Na Kyungwon)

Gyeonggyu...

Is Gyeonggyu here?

Do you know him?

Hello.

Hello. Hello.

Good to see you.

You look so young!

You both look youthful and beautiful.

Thank you.

We love hearing things like that.

I didn't know it before.

Really? I see.

I get a bit shy being around women.

- Come on... / - Really.

You seem to get shy around men too.

(Congresswoman Son says what's on her mind)

So how about we go inside and talk for a bit?

Let's go inside.

You're younger than me but older than Kyungwon.

Me? Probably.

(The interview starts)

I made a planner for our party.

It's very popular.

Mine is still from the Saenuri Party.

Do we have to have our planners out?

It's nice to have it out for appearances.

Maybe I shouldn't use a planner in congress.

There's nothing written in mine.

Just leave it there for appearances.

Here we go.

Before we start the interview

I have someone to introduce to you both.

It's the political cartoonist Park Sunchan.

- Do you know "Hammer?" / - Yes.

- Nice to meet you. / - Nice to meet you.

I love your art.

You made drawings of them, right?

Since you two are guests here...

Take a look.

Have a seat.

This isn't right.

I'm not like this.

I've never seen you in person.

I like the caricature.

But I'm not a big fan of the mirror.

Oh, the mirror.

How should we change it? Take out the mirror?

Instead of the fairest politician

change it to the most competent politician.

Very nice.

Your respect for congress...

This is the nicest out of all your caricatures.

Candidate Choo Miae got really angry.

Why? She didn't like her drawing?

He drew her with a sword.

(How will his next drawing look?)

I'm scared now.

I bet the drawing of Hyewon looks a lot nicer.

"Leave the promoting to me."

I look so ugly.

I won't say any more about the looks.

You don't seem too pleased.

No, it's nice.

But I'm a bit offended to see how I look.

I tried my best when I was drawing it.

You could make her eyes bigger.

He shouldn't. My eyes aren't big. It's fine.

Your eyes seem big in person.

The damage has been done.

Thank you.

I don't like it, but thank you.

(Look forward to the changed images!)

You two seem very close.

Are you actually close?

We're in the same standing committee.

For what committee?

Education, culture, sports and tourism.

I liked her as soon as I met her.

Kyungwon? What did you like about her?

I felt like I was seeing a celebrity.

She dresses very nice.

Most congresswomen wear stiff-looking clothes.

But Kyungwon always has a full outfit on.

And she always wears a shirt inside.

I wear shirts often.

She has a pretty face like a celebrity

yet her outfits look very official.

How's my outfit today?

Nice. It makes you look very young.

Thank you.

You usually wear golfing apparel.

You look really strange when you do.

So I was wondering what you'd wear today.

You look very nice in that shirt.

I'd better focus more on talking with you.

She lashes back whenever I say anything.

It's like I can't say anything to her.

I won't do that. I'll be careful.

(I was just joking)

You look nice.

You've really been around long.

(Been around long?)

Should I die young?

You continue to be famous.

Is it your youthful looks or your way of thinking?

We'll talk about it

and you can make the assessment.

You can be hard on us.

- Really? / - Sure.

Just go all out. Like you usually do.

(I feel like I can't win today)

Alright.

Kyungwon has served 4 terms.

Hyewon, how about you?

- My first. / - It's your first term.

What's the difference between 4 terms versus 1?

There's a huge gap.

In congress, people who've served 4 terms

hardly ever eat with first-timers.

Really?

You have to walk in order of rank.

I see.

For my first term, Congressman Rhyu Simin

had already served multiple terms.

A lot of the first-timers would ask him this.

"Do we have to wear our congress badge?"

He said, "First-timers should wear them."

Since you've served 4 terms,

do you see first-timers as noobs?

Actually, if you've served 4 terms

you don't associate with first-timers.

I'm giving her special treatment.

I don't associate with just anyone who did 4 terms.

(It was my choice to eat with you)

I wouldn't sit together

and talk with someone I dislike.

Whether they're male or female.

But we always connected and got along.

Right?

It's her first term but she's more seasoned...

I am older than her.

She's very professional.

If Hyewon was to join our party...

I have a lot of regrets about our party's promotions.

There were many factors leading to Moon Jaein

becoming president and she played a big factor.

I want her to come to our party.

Let me tell you about Congresswoman Na's

resume in politics.

A lot of people know this.

Seoul National University class of 1982.

You passed the bar exam in 1992.

You worked as a judge and then

Lee Hoichang suggested you work in politics.

Elected in the 17th through 20th legislative elections.

The original girl crush in congress

that's been in politics for 13 years.

Why'd you decide to enter politics

when you were a successful judge?

I could give you a lot of reasons

but my thoughts changed when I had my daughter.

I realized many people could be wrongly accused

if the laws and systems aren't right.

That was the biggest factor.

Now we'll talk about Hyewon.

Before you became a politician,

you were a brand designer from 1986 to 2016.

You famously worked on the C brand soju.

- Yes. / - As well as a different C brand.

You've really made people unhealthy making these.

Because of the name...

You drink and get drunk.

Then you feel like going back to the beginning.

I drank so much being fooled by the brand name.

It does that to you.

Even for the first C brand.

It makes you feel like you're living right.

You feel like someone who loves freedom.

Those were great names.

Honestly,

when our party members drink soju,

we don't drink the second C brand.

The one who wrote that is close with the Democrats.

That's why we drink the first C brand.

Yet that was made by her.

Which brand of soju are we supposed to drink?

It's quite the pickle.

It's hardest to create names for soju.

Because everyone from the homeless

to the big company CEOs drinks soju.

Everyone has to drink it

for it to become a brand worth $100 billion.

Your nickname is the Hand of Midas.

When you were the head of promotions

you played a big role.

Did you create the name Together Democratic Party?

We had a different name in mind

but I made the wise decision

of holding a public contest.

Someone else came up with the name.

But that contest was my project.

And you decided on the best name among those.

Right. That's how we came up with it.

What do you think of the name Liberty Korea Party?

The way I see it,

it isn't a good name.

The name New Politics Alliance for Democracy

isn't good either. First of all, it doesn't stand out.

It takes a long time to remember the name.

It doesn't really roll off the tongue.

We're concerned about that too.

We've changed our name so much...

- But Saenuri sounded better. / - It was better.

Saenuri sounded much better.

Names should be short.

It should be easy to remember and pronounce

but this name is neither of those things.

The Together Democratic Party is a bit long

but we call it the Minjoo for short.

But you can't shorten the Liberty Korea Party.

- LKP. / - Korea Party.

When you call it LKP

it sounds too close to the Korean word for scoundrel.

And if you say LKP fast,

it sounds like the Korean word for remnants.

If you shorten it more,

then it sounds like the word for remnants.

What about the name of our show? We Like Zines?

I was shocked at how strange it sounds.

(She attacks with the facts)

Right?

There's that show "King of Mask Singer."

Shouldn't you get royalties from that show?

(Gyeonggyu made a movie with a similar name)

Everyone was against the name.

Masks could be seen in a negative light.

A robber in a mask.

But then I thought Batman!

Heroes wear masks, so I decided to use the name.

That's how language is.

It might seem awkward at first, but once

you get used to it, it becomes easier to take in.

He really should get royalties.

The movie was very much talked about at the time.

I should be the host of "King of Mask Singer!"

- I made "Highway Star." / - Right. I know that.

I always imagined you'd feel wronged.

So I don't watch the show.

I bet he's bitter.

I should host the show instead of Kim Sungjoo.

He made the movie and the show became a hit.

For real.

So are things very different

now that you're a politician?

- Things are very different. / - Really?

I never cared about what other people thought.

(You can't live like that now)

The people around me... Wherever I go...

I have so many enemies.

Having many enemies. That's well put.

Since they're the ruling party

you're always getting more enemies, right?

It's really hard to deal with enemies inside.

They're harder to deal with.

You figured that out already in your first term.

It's my 4th term

but I took 33 months off.

In my case, I represented my party

in the Seoul mayoral elections.

After Oh Sehun quit as mayor

everyone wanted to run.

News that Ahn Cheol-soo is running

for mayor has hit political circles.

No matter who ran, we were going to lose.

Yet I had the smallest chance of losing.

But I didn't want to run because I knew I'd lose.

So nobody wanted to run.

Then our current party head Hong Junpyo

suggested that we have dinner.

He usually never treats anyone to dinner.

(Known for being modest)

We had nobody to run in our party

so he begged me to run.

For elections you're bound to lose,

there's no information or funds.

What's more, my party expected that I'd lose

so they wanted to blame me for it

instead of going after the party.

Those that were pro-Park

were betting on the presidential elections

that were coming the following year,

so they figured they'd give up

on the Seoul mayoral elections.

You were sacrificed for that.

That's politics.

- A sacrificial lamb. / - But over that...

Kyungwon...

What if it happens again next year?

The same party leader

and nobody to run again.

The current party leader...

A lot of people talk about this.

The hottest issue now for next year's local elections

is the mayor of Seoul.

It's the same for my party and her party.

I imagine that the Liberty Korea Party

will be the first one to have a candidate.

Maybe Hong Junpyo will buy you dinner again.

(Will Hong Junpyo buy dinner?)

She runs if Hong Junpyo asks her to dinner.

But she won't be a sacrifice this time.

She could give it a real go this time.

Currently, our party needs change.

What do you think we could do with this party name?

You still won't say you're not running.

A politician can never be rash

about saying that they'll do something.

If there's even a 1% chance, you don't answer.

So there is a chance you'll run.

Even if there's a 99% chance I won't...

That isn't the issue. Our party needs change.

What kind of change does your party need?

After losing once, we keep struggling.

We haven't fully reflected on our mistakes yet.

So once we do that

we should regain the faith of the people.

I think the current Liberty Korea Party

needs to change their attitude.

They're always against what we do.

They're against anything we say or suggest.

Because of that habit,

people get disillusioned with their politics.

It's wrong that we're portrayed like that.

So I consider that to be unfortunate as well.

This isn't a debate show.

Alright. I'll stop.

It's a fancy variety show.

- Fancy. / - Yes.

When you first became a politician

I'm sure many people told you that you're pretty.

Have you ever benefited from your looks?

I think I did benefit quite a bit at first.

A lot of people remembered me.

So that was beneficial at first,

but detrimental as I grew as a politician.

In both ruling and opposing parties

there are pretty congresswomen.

Candidate Choo Miae is very pretty.

She is quite the beauty.

The women in my party don't really get prettied up.

It's not that we get prettied up...

You shouldn't say it like that.

(I don't get prettied up)

There's gender discrimination in politics.

They never point out handsome politicians.

But they're always making lists

of pretty female politicians and comparing us.

Why don't they compare handsome male politicians?

You seem to be unaware of this.

Do you think Moon Jaein's looks benefited him?

I don't really think so...

You are denigrating the ruling party.

You think he's ugly?

He looks a little better than Hong Junpyo...

What are you talking about?

You're going to get a long text message from me.

It's not like that.

As a designer, I rate him as follows.

President Moon Jaein...

He looked like a movie star in his younger days.

He's very handsome.

(I'm the best looking guy in politics)

He's not really my type though.

What is your type?

Among the candidates for the presidential election,

I prefer Yoo Seongmin or Ahn Cheolsoo.

You have strange taste.

In terms of looks, I believe

the congressmen in our party

have distinct features and they're very attractive.

Congressman Pyo Changwon is very handsome.

We have very different taste in men.

I'm just being objective. They're not my type.

- We have different tastes. / - It's not my taste.

You two seem to have different taste in men.

How about myself? Sorry about this.

What score would you give me out of 100?

(Excited)

84.

Gosh. 84.

That's such a generous score.

(Gyeonggyu is far from Kyungwon's type)

Just be objective about my looks.

A lot of people say I look like Hong Junpyo.

- Really? / - I get that sometimes.

Is it because of your dialect?

- I don't see it. / - That's going too far.

I don't think so.

- I look a lot better? / - Of course, you do!

I agree to that.

Objectively speaking, you look a lot better.

Both parties think I look better.

Thank you.

(I don't agree to that!)

Since you two are close,

we'll see what you think about each other.

This is what Kyungwon thinks of Hyewon.

The master of naming.

She was an expert in that field.

So we suspect she came up with

all the good names for things in politics.

Large companies and high earners

protecting their honor through social obligations.

We wish to call it honor taxation.

I thought that was a great name.

I didn't come up with honor taxation.

But I'll show you a few days later.

(Son Hyewon's social media on July 29, 2017)

(A new term for taxes on the rich)

A name should contain the essence of something

and portray it most effectively.

People express themselves through language.

Naming is very important in politics.

We use the term framing too.

What kind of name would start a conversation?

Hong Junpyo is good at naming too.

He does more framing than naming.

We didn't frame it right.

I don't use the terms conservative and progressive.

I say rightist and leftist.

Leftist can be seen negatively.

Because we'd be right

and they'd be left.

If you're on this side

your terms have to be bolder.

But you shouldn't be impatient.

I'd like to explain that.

After the presidential election,

some people are saying we're being impatient.

I can definitely say we're not.

The issues about nuclear power

and the reformation of prosecution.

This has been on President Moon's mind

for a very long time.

It's not about whether he's prepared or not.

It's important for the people to relate to something.

If they can't sympathize...

So our party plans on improving

to go in the direction our President wants...

With regard to the construction of nuclear reactors,

the government will hold a public debate

to see if the project should be suspended.

According to public opinion,

the policy will be modified.

The government said they would take responsibility.

Let's wait and see.

I'm just worried about that.

Tell the president that yourself.

We'll talk more in private.

The people watching now

probably saw a minute of footage

after revealing the master of naming.

But they've been debating for 30 minutes.

We talked a lot over the master of naming.

I feel like anchor Sohn Sukhee sitting here.

You two were very aggressive and critical.

And you defended yourself. That was very nice.

Let's see the second one.

She's politically powerful.

She's already close with the first lady.

It's her first term yet she's head of promotions.

I believe she's quite influential.

The first lady and I are friends.

I told her I wouldn't call her again.

I told her to call me if she needed anything.

I told her I wouldn't call her again.

I don't want to make the President uncomfortable

and I could get uncomfortable because of him.

We both understand each other.

So it's even more uncomfortable.

I can't even say what I want.

- Even more so. / - Right. In case it causes trouble.

Some people misunderstand

and think that I joined this party

because I'm friends with the first lady.

It wasn't easy for me to drop everything

and become the head of promoting.

I made a very difficult choice and I'm working hard.

But a lot of people are saying I became

a politician because I knew the right people.

If I'm influential,

it's not because I know the President and his wife.

It's because I'm energetic and work very hard.

She is influential.

She got nominated for a good place.

- That's not it! / - No.

A lot of supporters know about this.

I was the first person to run for local council.

You were temporarily transferred to that area?

After Jeong Cheongrye dropped out,

our party's approval rating fell by 5.4% in two days.

People like Kim Ojun came

and told me I had to run

for Jung Chungrae to lead.

Before Moon Jaein was president,

he saw the headlines that I'd be running.

He called me and told me not to run.

Despite her party's objection, Son Hyewon

has revealed that she'd be running to help

Jung Chungrae and console the people.

I deliberated for a moment.

Not even for a day. For a moment.

And I said I'd run.

Because if that improves our approval rating

and I could win back our disappointed supporters

I figured running wouldn't be so bad.

And also...

I was confident.

I never even considered local elections,

but I figured I'd win for sure

with the help of Congressman Jung Chungrae.

(Jung Chungrae helped with the campaigning)

Will you run in the next election?

No.

You won't run in the next one? For real?

That's it for me. But people write online

that you'd be running for local council.

(An intense match of wits)

I won't be running.

I won't be running in Mapo.

I have my job.

Didn't you start out in local council, Kyungwon?

Yes, that's right.

Isn't it hard to be nominated?

It was very hard for me to get nominated.

Really?

A lot of people think I was

President Lee Myungbak's spokesperson.

That was only when he was a candidate.

When they split into pro-Lee and pro-Park

I wasn't affiliated with either.

So after Lee Myungbak was elected president

everyone took a position.

I had nowhere to go.

So I said I'd run for local council in Songpa

where our party has never been elected.

I said I'd run

and I got so many calls.

Nobody thought I'd get nominated.

What were you supposed to do?

The influential ones already have their plans.

It could've been bad for you.

It was like, "How dare you run?"

They said nobody would nominate me.

Then, in the end,

President Lee Myungbak played a role.

He said to at least nominate me.

But why nominate me for Jung-gu?

When Sohn Hakyu was the head of the Democrats

they said that he might

be running in either Jongno or Jung-gu.

"Run in Jung-gu and see if you survive."

You're always the sacrifice.

So I thought about it.

If I didn't accept it they wouldn't nominate me.

I figured I'd be finished with politics

if I didn't get elected.

So I said I'd run for Jung-gu

and thankfully Sohn Hakyu decided to run in Jongno.

After the 18th parliament

it became the world of pro-Park.

I applied to be nominated after the Seoul elections

and the pro-Park camp called me.

- They said they'd never nominate me. / - Why?

They said not to run since I lost the Seoul elections.

So I announced that I wouldn't be running.

That's why I took 33 months off.

(Na Kyungwon will not be running)

(And 3 years later)

Na Kyungwon of the Saenuri Party

has beaten Roh Hoechan of the Justice Party.

Na lost to Park Wonsoon and has made a triumphant

return to politics after 3 years.

So after political power...

Rich in antiques. What's this?

I don't mean rich as a bad thing. She's really rich.

I mean it as a good thing.

Her wealth has depth.

This is something the reporters wrote

after looking through the assets of politicians.

I found out that I have $2.9 million in antiques

when I reported my assets.

Why do you buy antique lacquerware?

It was a calling.

It's not because I like lacquerware.

Lacquerware is Korea's representative craft.

And the nation doesn't know its worth.

Museums should be collecting ones from now

but they only get ones from the 19th century

perhaps because of the Japanese rule.

So I decided to get the ones made by craftsmen

from before the 19th century.

Then it became a big collection.

I'm not sure what to do with them either.

If the nation ever makes a lacquerware museum

I'll donate my entire collection.

Without asking for anything in return.

How many pieces do you have?

- Over 300. / - 300...

Amazing.

- I have nowhere to put them. / - Any small ones?

I can give you the ones that aren't important.

Let's look at what we prepared next.

This is what Hyewon

thinks of Kyungwon.

You said she's like a celebrity earlier.

I was shocked when I first saw her at a hearing.

She was so beautiful.

I thought it was a waste for her to be in politics.

(She's in a different party, but she's pretty)

Before you were a judge,

did you ever dream of being an actress?

I bet someone tried to cast you on the street.

When I was a judge...

Do you know the term prompt trial?

Things have changed these days

but when I went to do prompt trials in the morning

I'd just get drunks that had been drinking all night.

One defendant shouted,

"Your Honor, are you married?"

"Too bad. I wish you could be my daughter-in-law."

(Her looks took away from her authority)

Some people think I'm treated like a princess

and I have it very easy in politics.

Like you benefited from your looks.

I tell them I'm treated

more like a maid than a princess.

So I work very hard.

I barely got elected a 3rd time in Dongjak.

And I worked non-stop from then.

In local council.

I have a Saturday date every week.

I still do. It's been done over 100 times.

Every Saturday I hear out the complaints.

I'm actually there. So I don't get much personal time.

But this isn't always a good thing

since it detracts from my efforts.

I could see that.

Sometimes I'm concerned.

When there's a hearing

my attire should be tidy

with my hair straight.

I don't think people know I struggle over that.

I sometimes think that.

She can't help this.

Celebrity looks.

Skills learned from serving many terms.

After becoming a politician,

I realized that the positions that lawmakers take

differ depending on how many terms they served.

Second-term lawmakers become stewards.

But after working with some lawmakers

sometimes I can't help but think that some members

of the Liberty Korea Party go a little too far.

They sit in front of me.

I just can't understand their behaviors.

If I stay quiet while you talk like this,

I'll be scolded by our party members later.

We think the same thing about your party.

You also think the same thing?

But I wish that female lawmakers would keep

their manners no matter how angry they get.

Those people have become lawmakers

and are always exposed to people. I thought,

"Are they not embarrassed of themselves?"

But she just sits there elegantly without speaking.

She sits there as if it's not her business.

I always look at her.

Whenever people get in a fight or cause a scene

I always watched to see how she acts.

Does she stay seated?

She frowns and does not make any eye contact.

So I thought to myself,

"Even if the party makes a decision,"

"not all members may think the same way."

Whenever she asks questions, she knows exactly

what to say and she's firm. She's quite experienced.

But I'd like to ask you something.

I'm really curious.

I don't think being a lawmaker

for multiple terms

makes that person a better lawmaker.

Well...

What is your thought on that?

Lawmakers should become more experienced

and more mature as they serve more terms.

But as they serve 5, 6 terms...

Bad things get piled up, too.

This is what I think.

It's possible that lawmakers lose the passion

they started out with as they serve more terms.

They look out for themselves more.

That's true, too. But this is what I think.

Lawmakers gain a broader spectrum of understanding.

It's true that lawmakers of multiple terms

don't get involved in fights.

This is a joke...

When do lawmakers fight the most?

In their first term. This is how it goes.

We must work hard.

Because of the new law,

lawmakers don't get in physical fights anymore.

But they did in the past.

They grabbed at each other's heads.

When there is a fight...

Do first-term lawmakers go out first

while second and third-term lawmakers line up next?

No. Third, fourth-term lawmakers don't fight.

First term. Go.

First-term lawmakers go out and fight.

Our party has always been physically weak.

How can you say that? How can you?

You weren't there when we had physical fights.

Many members of your party were activists.

Many of them are quite fit.

They were activists, not athletes.

No, but they worked out, too.

Oh, my.

Many members of our party were more studious.

So they come up with many strategies.

If there's the speaker's seat,

you take the left and you take the right side.

They come up with these strategies.

But our party always lost. So I said,

"Please don't fight. We always lose anyway."

Male members still insisted on fighting.

Female members of your party are worse.

I think some of them got reinforcements.

Please, hear me out.

So one time...

We had always failed to take over the platform.

But one time, we finally succeeded in doing so.

Male members were ecstatic.

I thought, "We'll lose it right away."

I was right.

The moment we took over the platform,

two members from the Minjoo Party

ran over to the front and everything collapsed.

It was soon over.

One female lawmaker became quite popular

for a picture of her holding someone by his hair

and dragging him out.

- A female lawmaker? / - Yes. She's still a member.

In the Liberty Korea Party,

there are two female lawmakers

with the loudest voices.

Our party members were quite worried about them.

So I said, "I'll deal with this person."

"You two deal with the other one."

I came up with the strategy.

So I succeeded in stopping her.

But the other two failed to stop the other one.

We were prepared from the start

to be in a fight.

It differs for the ruling and the opposition parties.

It was when we were the opposition party.

You're now the ruling party. It's quite interesting.

Now that you are the ruling party...

There's a third-term female lawmaker in the Minjoo.

She suddenly asked me to have a meal with her.

Recently?

She thinks she must be nice to the opposition parties.

She asked me to have a meal with her.

So I said, "It's hard being the ruling party, right?"

Many times, the ruling party must stay quiet.

We don't get to say anything we want to.

It won't be as bad for us.

I don't think the president or the administration

will push us that hard.

Of course, that's what you wish.

So she has skills learned from serving many terms.

By the way, people don't really know this.

I think this is quite unfair.

She and I get paid the same amount.

- Oh, regardless of the terms. / - The same.

Even for the sixth-term lawmaker.

- There is no salary class. / - How is that possible?

I think we should say something about this.

When a person is re-elected. should they be paid more?

Of course. They have more experience.

For any other job in the world

you get paid more as you gain experience.

But all lawmakers get paid the same amount.

Maybe it's because some people take a break.

No.

People who serve consecutively get paid the same.

In fact, lawmakers don't get any pension either.

No pension, no severance pay.

Many people think we get a pension.

Lawmakers got paid $1,000 a month before.

Even after serving one term, you'd get paid

$1,000 a month, but that became a problem.

That system is now gone.

People like me who became a lawmaker early...

I used to eat ginseng by myself,

but now I give my husband ginseng every day, too.

I need to serve him well.

Because you have no pension?

I see.

Let's look at the third one.

First female chief of Foreign Affairs and Unification.

In the National Assembly, each committee

has a chief, which is a very important position.

It's quite rare to have a woman be

the chief of a committee.

She was the first woman to be the chief.

I was shocked. It was in your third term?

Yes, it was.

You should become the chief once, too.

No, no.

All right.

We looked at Lawmaker Na's image

from Lawmaker Son's image.

In the 20th general election, the highest number of

women were elected. There are 51 female lawmakers.

Yes. There are 51.

26 local districts and 25 proportional representatives.

Those are very small numbers.

The numbers didn't increase by that much.

When I came to the National Assembly first,

50% of proportional representatives were women.

There were little over 40 female lawmakers.

It's been 12 years since then and going onto

16 years, but the numbers didn't go up much.

How is Korea compared to other countries?

It depends.

Countries in Northern Europe have more women elected.

The index on women of Korea is quite low

compared to the other OECD countries.

It is quite low. What that means is

we have fewer women in higher positions.

It would be nice to have more female lawmakers.

We have a separate committee and ministry for women,

but I think rather than having women in those only,

women should be mixed in the whole government.

So in that sense, we need more women in politics.

When we look at female ministers who joined

the administration this time, they are awesome.

They are such professionals in their fields

so I have high hopes for them.

I think it was in 1948. Im Yeongsin was

appointed Minister of Commerce and Industry.

But male lawmakers opposed, saying that

men cannot serve a woman as their boss.

There's a saying "a hen shouldn't crow louder."

Such a patriarchal mind.

Does gender discrimination still exist today?

Then they would be ruined.

Regardless of the parties...

We may be few in number,

but heads of three parties are women.

They are all very strong and confident.

No one can make such discriminating remarks.

As for our party,

if anybody makes such remarks against women

all female members get together and talk about

sending that person to the ethics committee.

Lawmaker Son seems to be quite optimistic.

But I don't agree.

You've been in politics for a long time.

She says women are powerful

and women are the heads of the parties.

But there is still a glass ceiling in politics.

That only goes for the Liberty Korea Party.

- That's not true. / - I think it's true.

Head Choo Miae recently seems to have

a different stance from the Blue House.

She's not on the same page as the party.

I think head Choo Miae is not acknowledged

by the others in that final step.

So...

That's not true. That's not true at all.

You don't agree with me.

Whether the policy is decided by the minister

or the Blue House...

When policies are passed,

many things end up changing in the end.

That's because women's opinions aren't considered

at the very end and that's because

there are still more men in politics.

You are serving your fourth term right now.

Have there been changes in the way male lawmakers

look at you or treat you since you first joined?

The culture has changed over the years.

During my first term,

older lawmakers yelled

at female lawmakers

if they wore colorful dresses.

It was like that back then.

During your first term,

I heard you were shocked to hear

people can get valuable information

at the men's sauna.

Let me explain.

There's a sauna in the basement of our building.

Since there are more male lawmakers,

people would say many agreements

were made in the men's sauna.

There's a lot of information in the men's sauna.

But now that we have more female lawmakers

many female lawmakers gather at the sauna, too.

We discuss things sometimes, too.

You do?

In the tub?

It doesn't have to be in the tub.

There are certain people I run into often.

I often meet lawmaker Sim Sangjung.

When I do, I call her Simvely.

When she was running for the president

she prepared for the debate in the sauna.

It's because she always has guests

in the office so she needed a quiet place to work.

It's the only place where she won't be bothered.

You exchange lots of information there?

Yes. Everybody knows who works out the most.

There is someone who really works out hard.

You two make issues quite often, right?

You recently apologized to the public.

Will you say a word about that please?

They took pictures at a funeral with two thumbs up.

Lawmakers Song and Son of the Minjoo Party

are smiling with their thumbs up.

Online commenters criticized them for being rude

by looking like they're enjoying a funeral.

There's nothing more to say.

It was my fault.

What I did was wrong.

I failed to stay alert.

I heard that Kim Gunja's funeral was empty

without many mourners

so I gathered people through social media.

I hoped to have about 20 people show up,

but more than 100 people came.

All these people who I didn't know came.

I was at the funeral for about 3 hours

and greeted the mourners that I didn't know.

They kept asking me to take pictures.

But I kept refusing because we were at a funeral.

We were there past 10 o'clock to clean up.

Then at the last moment

I took a picture to thank the people

who came to the funeral for me.

- You didn't take any pictures before that? / - No.

But I will only focus on what I did wrong.

I told everybody

not to make any excuses.

I told the advisors not to explain the situation.

I said, "Let's just apologize for what we did."

I'm sure it was an opportunity for you

to learn about what it's like to be a public figure.

I've been in politics for years now.

Things like this happen so often.

As public figures, we must reflect more and more

upon how we behave. That's what I think.

We are quite careful

when we're at funerals, too.

Since we are comedians,

when people ask to take pictures,

we can't be frowning.

I sometimes smile

and ask myself, "Why am I smiling?"

There are some uncertain moments.

There is nothing else I can say about it.

What I did was wrong. It's all my fault.

It became an issue because you told someone

to shut up at a meeting.

The meeting has been delayed for 55 minutes.

We will now begin the confirmation hearing.

I would like to say something. (Saenuri Party)

I will give you time later.

Before we begin the hearing...

I will give you time later.

Before we begin...

We are here to see if this person is qualified.

According to the laws...

What are you doing right now?

Resign from your post.

Resign from your post.

Please shut up.

(What?)

Did you lose your temper?

Imagine how I must've felt to say it.

Imagine how I must've felt.

I didn't lose my temper.

I planned it.

I got it. I got it.

I am in charge of dealing with her.

I felt responsible at the moment.

Someone had to stop her

at that moment.

Someone had to step up and be the bad guy.

Governor Ahn Heejung called me afterwards.

I didn't know him well at the time.

I saved the video on my phone.

I watch it whenever I feel blue.

That's how I got to know him more.

That's how I became famous.

But one day, my friend whispered this into my ear.

"But wasn't that too harsh?"

When people start speaking at the National Assembly

they start out by saying

"Respectful fellow lawmakers."

That's what they say.

Then they yell out, "Hey! How dare you!"

How can people change so suddenly?

Like I said, I want people to mind their manners.

Instead of yelling out, "What!"

yell out, "What did you say?"

What!

That's so embarrassing.

We must keep our dignity.

Even married couples should fight with manners.

The entire country is watching us.

I wish people would keep their manners.

You may be cheered by your supporters,

but your image...

I guess you could look like a fighter,

but like your friend said, you may look harsh.

I know which lawmaker you're talking about.

I wish you two would meet and make amends.

You should care about your political image.

I will keep that in mind.

- You two should work it out. / - I'll do my best.

I know both of you.

I can't say I will definitely do it.

I will keep that in mind.

(She's such an interesting person)

I don't know if this is a good thing.

When I used to be in debates a lot,

I was complimented for being able

to stay calm when I should be enraged.

I actually react quite slowly.

Many times, I get angry when I'm at home.

You think about it again at home?

That's how I was trained for years.

I was told that judges must mask their emotions.

That's something I should learn to do,

but it's too late now.

But politics are about relating to people

so that's a great advantage for you.

I think it's a disadvantage for me.

How do people see me?

That's why you're the ice princess.

So...

So I think it's a disadvantage for me

that I used to be a judge.

I don't think

making issues is good for politics.

Being at the center of issues

is not always good.

Sometimes, politics are about not doing anything.

That's what I think.

I understand that we must

take the time to be quiet at times

and reflect back on our behavior.

But there are jobs that we must complete.

When you look up the word "politics" in the dictionary,

it says "the power to move people

for the good of the public."

That's why I became a politician.

As long as that's what's on my mind

I must keep doing my best to move people

for the good of the public.

That's what I think about the most these days.

What will you do to move people?

You should think hard about that.

There are many ways to do it.

- Please show me the way. / - Oh, no.

Lawmaker Na. You have many nicknames.

Like she said earlier, there's "ice princess."

"Beautiful politician."

"Kim Taehee of the Saenuri Party."

Recently, there are "the icon of recent times"

and "minus hand."

- You know why you got that, right? / - Yes.

Whatever you get involved in doesn't work out.

Hers was the "hand of Midas."

We should hang out more to neutralize the two.

The people you supported

didn't get good results.

That's why you got this nickname.

While Lawmaker Na supported Ban Kimoon,

he declared not to run for presidency.

He said he made the final decision on his own.

Choo Chinwoo wrote on his social media.

Me and President Lee Myungbak.

Me and President Park Geunhye. And then Ban Kimoon.

He wrote, "You're quite diligent."

"You hop from one to another. It's Ban Kimoon now?"

That's what he said about me.

I was never a part of anyone's faction.

With President Lee

and particularly with President Park.

The party begged me to help with the election

so I helped out in the final 7 days. It was tough.

We needed someone to run for the presidency

who could show our party's value.

At the time, many people thought Ban Kimoon

was the best person to do that

and his approval rating was quite high, too.

That's why I wanted to support him.

I did not support anyone personally

to achieve anything.

I think he just wanted to make fun of that

and wrote such a thing on his social media.

You said you followed the party's decision.

But after the impeachment of President Park,

it looked like you would leave Saenuri

and join the Bareun Party.

Are you going to leave the Saenuri Party?

Well, I was quite clear that

I won't be one with today's Saenuri.

But you stayed with the Liberty Korea Party.

Was there a special reason for that?

I thought the right wing had to take responsibility

so I supported the impeachment.

The party should've taken responsibility, too,

but that didn't happen.

We asked certain members to leave but they refused.

So we started to discuss breaking away.

If we can't get them to leave,

we'll all break away and form a new party.

That's how it started.

On the first day of the discussion,

20 of us were there.

They said if less than 50 members leave

it's not a break away for a reorganization,

but it's a break away to split the party.

We agreed to discuss the value

we were pursuing before leaving the party.

That's what we agreed on.

But before the discussion was properly done,

Lawmaker Hwang was our spokesperson...

He just declared to break away.

I was so shocked. While we were sitting in one line,

I moved my chair.

I didn't want to be seen together with them.

You'll see that there's a gap between us.

Since then, I was certain that

our value must be clear.

But when the party equals Yoo Seongmin,

the true value of the right wing doesn't come out.

Yoo Seongmin shouldn't be the entire party.

How is it now?

It's still Yoo Seongmin's party.

Lawmaker Lee Hyehoon is

Yoo Seongmin's right hand.

That's why I didn't join Bareun Party,

but the rumor got started that I didn't join them...

Because they didn't make you the representative.

Lawmaker Lee Hyehoon said that.

Really?

She thought she'd become the representative.

That doesn't mean she wouldn't join the party.

Maybe she has other reasons.

She is totally capable of doing that.

So I asked her,

"How could you say that about me?"

Then she apologized.

- Who's a senior? / - We joined at the same time.

She said, "I'm sorry, but why did you attack Yoo?"

She kept talking like that to me.

So I just...

You won't ever join the Bareun Party?

I think the Liberty Korea Party

and Bareun Party should reunite.

I'd like to work towards that.

If I went to the Bareun Party,

I could've been more comfortable.

I could've been more free from the responsibility.

Those who left the party at the time

were people I worked with so it could've been better.

But I thought that would be wrong

so I've stayed with Liberty Korea.

Politics are quite difficult.

People keep asking me what I'm going to do,

but we never get to choose what we want to do.

You don't know the result, but you could try.

Run for the mayor next year.

Stop talking like that.

The reason things weren't good in our party...

Who knows?

Most multiple-term lawmakers aren't clear

about what they will do in the future.

But at least she was quite honest.

If there's at least 1% of possibility,

she won't say she won't do it.

Most politicians lie and say they don't do it.

They would say that they won't run for it.

Then they do.

I really hate that.

"I won't say I'm not running for the mayor

since there is at least a 1% chance." That's honest.

You said earlier that

you won't be a lawmaker anymore.

That's right.

I won't, but there's an exception.

I'll do it if I'm the no. 1 proportional representative.

If not, I won't do it.

What if you're no. 2?

That's a man.

- Odd numbers are women. / - No. 3?

No.

How dare they make me no. 3!

You can say that because you're the heavyweight.

No.1 representative. You're the heavyweight.

I won't be happy with no. 3.

I can never say such a thing.

I'll only accept no. 1.

I barely made it in

and I barely got Jung-gu.

- What number were you? / - Me?

At the time, up to no. 16 were able to get in.

Our party wasn't so popular then.

I was originally no. 15.

I was no. 15 that night

and the next day two people were disqualified,

so I became no. 11.

I was originally no. 15.

When we looked into you two,

we discovered that you have great connections.

Class of 1986 from Seoul National University.

Class of 1986 from SNU Law School.

Cho Kuk of civil affairs.

Governor Won Heeryong of Jeju.

Professor Kim Rando.

- They were classmates. / - Yes.

Did you have a crush on any of them

when you were in college?

We can't talk about this over tea or coffee.

That's too cheap.

Is that true?

Is it one of the three?

Can we imagine who it is?

I'll leave it as a question mark.

I think I can guess who it is.

I won't say it in front of the cameras.

I'll guess after we're done.

I think I can guess who it is, too.

- Right? / - Yes.

Lawmaker Son also has great connections.

Your best friend from childhood

became the First Lady.

A friend from childhood

isn't really a connection.

What is President Moon like in person?

He has always been a man of few words.

He has always quiet.

It was decided in early April

that I would be the new head of PR

for the Minjoo Party.

The first Lady found out about the news

from a newspaper.

He never told her.

I'm his wife's close friend,

but he never told her the news.

That's how quiet he is

and all I know is that he is more adamant

than he seems.

What is your day like?

I don't get to rest on the weekends.

That's when there are many events in the district.

- You must take care of the residents. / - Yes.

I'm different from others.

Since PR is my specialty,

I communicate more with young people

through social media rather than with organizations.

So when I go to my district...

I'm sorry.

I'm like an idol star.

I can't walk down the street.

I was wondering why you apologized.

I really can't walk down the street.

People line up to take pictures with me.

We must learn from her actually.

The Minjoo party members communicate well.

We only go to senior citizen centers.

We go there, too.

I'm serious.

I'm not saying we shouldn't go there.

We shouldn't stop there.

She uses social media to communicate with others.

But I tried to meet more mothers

so I joined the Green Mom activities

and I had discussions with mothers, too.

But I should learn from Lawmaker Son.

During the presidential election, our district

had the largest increase of younger people.

It was the reason for higher voting rates.

It's easier to bring younger people to our side.

I agree with her.

Older people tend to be set

on whether they're conservative or progressive.

But younger people tend to

think of their future, so they can

easily change their thoughts.

I think...

I agree with what she said.

We must work harder to appeal to younger people.

We must change the way we communicate

and we must bring many changes.

We didn't work hard enough in that sense.

Also, the situation was not in our favor

this time for people to open up to us.

We must work harder.

It's important that younger people

are starting to vote more.

I think you can become the icon of the conservatives

and persuade younger people.

Thank you. She is saying kind words.

What are your future plans?

For my remaining term...

Since I achieved my goal of changing the government

I will now focus on my district

and work hard for weak people in culture and arts.

I hope you are able to build a museum

for the lacquerware that you own.

That is my lifetime goal.

- I hope you succeed. / - Thank you.

If you could give me a small one, that would be nice.

You're interested in this?

Yes.

Let's talk quietly later.

(Selfish interests rather than arts)

What are your future plans?

The right wing has collapsed badly.

We must work hard to restore it.

I haven't been able to do anything I want to do

so I'm a bit disappointed about that.

I think we need more time.

I hope you become the strong center for your party.

- I have high hopes for you. / - I'll try my best.

All right.

I must publish the book.

How many pages will you include?

It's thick with pictures and illustrations.

You're making a book based on today only?

Yes.

Really? Then I should've spoken more.

She spoke a lot more today.

Based on today's discussion, I will...

Our interview. Not a discussion.

What I'll look out for is

whether you run for the mayor next year

and your decision when you're no. 3.

I'll be sure to keep my eyes on you two.

Let's check out the editorial cartoon.

Did you make them look pretty?

I'm worried.

Let's take a look.

Let's start with Congresswoman Na.

(Looking at Na Kyungwon's first)

Congresswoman Na had

a strong image of being a pretty politician

so that's what I illustrated in the beginning.

Now that I've met you in person

you have this elegance that cannot be expressed

by just being called pretty.

Thank you.

It was good that I appeared on this program.

I tried to express the charisma and elegance

hiding behind your beauty.

Thank you.

What about Congresswoman Son?

When I saw your pictures

I thought you had small eyes.

But you actually have large eyes.

(Deer-like eyes)

The eyes have gotten bigger.

Your eyes are much bigger.

Compared to the illustration we saw earlier.

The eyes are bigger.

I always felt like you draw the key point

so well with great impact.

But I still don't like how you drew me.

(Bitter)

But it's true that

you draw the key points well.

This is nice. "Come at me."

You have great talents and energy.

I go so much energy from you today.

It says, "Come at me."

(Come at me!)

What should we do with this?

Do you want changes on your face?

- No, no. / - It's okay?

If you tell me now

I can make changes before it's published.

Let me see mine again.

(Today's interview is over!)

(Please look forward to his new book!)

Good job.

Good work.

(Candid and pleasing interview)

(We look forward to their futures)

(We hope female energy is stronger this year)

(Next week)

(Last year's candlelight rally)

The last subway and bus have been extended.

(The hidden contributor of the peaceful rally)

(The world recognized him first)

(The pride of Seoul!)

(He's in charge of 10 million citizens in Seoul)

(Mayor Park Wonsoon of Seoul)

How to Draw a Kingfisher With Aquarelle Pencils - Duration: 3:59.

Hello my friends and welcome to another Tuesday of tutorial!

I am Leonardo Pereznieto and today we will draw a kingfisher.

That is a very beautiful little bird.

For this we will use Cretacolor Aquarelle pencils.

I chose the dark blue, the Ultramarine Blue, to do the sketch.

And we begin with the shape of the head and then of the body.

Something very simple, like this.

Start with the easy, big, large volumes.

And then the beak.

Which is pretty long on this bird.

Very good!

We refine the shape a little,

here will have some feathers, visible on the back,

and the wing.

Very good!

The feathers at the tip of the wings and tail.

And let´s draw the eye.

And the foot.

Now we can start coloring!

I will be using a light blue for a lot of the feathers.

That and the Ultramarine Blue.

Very good!

We add some orange on the chest and the lower part of the head.

And then some black for the beak.

And I will use it also for some dark accents.

I love these aquarelle pencils because they are water soluble, so now

with a fine brush and some water, we can melt the pigment,

making it really painterly.

And as you can see, the color gets more intense, once you add water.

Nice eh? [laughter].

These birds are not only beautiful but they are pretty amazing,

they are famous for fishing under water.

They usually stand on a high perch, from where they visualise their prey,

then they dive nearly vertically, very fast, and they plunge into the water and catch

their fish.

Some of the challenges of doing all of this, specially for the eyes,

is the hard impact with the water, as well as the glare while submerged.

For this they have a third, transparent eyelid, that covers the eye just before

impact, and that stays there while underwater.

And also the part of the retina that captures light, switches to

a secondary one, that works underwater.

That´s pretty amazing!

And let´s darken some areas.

So they basically have a secondary eye function, that

kicks in when they are underwater, so that they are able to see there.

Very good!

¡Excelente!

I like it how it is looking!

But we should give it a little bit more contrast,

so let´s push the darks further.

After you have melted the colors with the brush and water,

you can add more pigment
