WHAT CAN & CAN'T A DIETITIAN DO?! - Duration: 7:46.

Hi everyone welcome back to my Channel!

Today we're going to be speaking

some things a dietitian can and can't do.

(MUSIC )

So hi everyone my name is Kim I am a

registered dietitian. If you are new here

to this channel and you like what you

see so far please go ahead and subscribe

hit that subscribe button. If you guys

have been watching me for any amount of time

you guys have an idea of what a

dietitian does. There are some

limitations in the field of nutrition

and dietetics. So let's first start off

with a positive note : What can a

dietitian do?

The first thing a dietitian can do is give you personalized,

individual advice. Some people think that

the advice dietitians give is just a

cookie cutter advice, like a

one-size-fits-all and that is the

furthest away from the truth. Dietitians

work with you individually to come up

with realistic, achievable, timely,

measurable, goals that suit your personal

life. So what may work for Tom may not

necessarily work for Sally. So they

individualize their plan of care for you.

The second thing a dietitian does is

they know how to manage chronic diseases.

So say for instance, you're someone with

diabetes or high blood pressure or high

cholesterol a dietitian is able to give

you nutritional advice that will help

manage those conditions because

definitely those conditions, as well as

other conditions which I did not mention

is affected by food. Third thing a

dietitian can help you with is weight

loss. Now, obviously we live in an

obesogenic society so dietitian can

formulate an eating plan for you, they can

definitely recommend an increased amount

of physical activity depending on your

condition that can help promote weight

loss. So those are all the things that a

dietitian can do, so let's take a look at

a few things that

dietitian cannot do.

The first thing a dietitian cannot do is to actually

diagnose a disease. Dietitians cannot

tell you "oh you have diabetes" or " you

have cancer". That is reserved to another

profession all together. So dietitians

first cannot diagnose the disease. The

second thing dietitians can't do is

actually write for you to receive a

prescription. Dietitians cannot write for

you to receive a prescription. You cannot

take that to a pharmacy and say 'well you

know my dietitian recommended that I get

this diabetes medication or this

cholesterol medication.' Dietitians cannot

do that. Again that is reserved to a

medical professional such as a

physician or a physician's assistant or

a nurse practitioner. Those professions

can do those things dietitians .Likewise

seeing that dietitians cannot write for

you to receive a prescription, they

cannot adjust medications here's a story

there was an associate of mine and she

was a dietitian she actually decided to

leave the profession and she wanted to

become a physician's assistant. There's

nothing wrong with being a physician's

assistant that's actually another video

for another time; but, the reason why she

decided to leave the field of dietetics

and become a physician's assistant is

simply because she said that there was a

lot of people coming to her that needed

their medication, specifically their

insulin to be adjusted and she couldn't

touch it being a dietitian it wasn't in

her license. Now as dietitians we do have

a license to protect. We can lose our

license just like any other profession.

So she decided you know what I'm going

to become a physician's assistant

because I want to be able to impact my

client in case I see that there

something going wrong, in case there's a

medication that needs to be adjusted. Now

what dietitians can do is to work with

the endocrinologist and work with the

medical professional, whether that's a

nurse practitioner, PA-C or physician and

make recommendations and it is at the

medical professionals discretion whether

they adhere or they choose not to adhere

to your recommendation because after all

it's only a recommendation. Some

dietitians what they have done to kind

of get a little more wiggle room, a

little more freedom in the field of

nutrition and dietetics is they've

sought order writing privileges. Now

order writing privileges do not mean you

know you can go around and you can write

medications for anything; NO!, it's only a

specific set of things. For instance,

instead of asking a physician to change

the diet if dietitian has ordering

privileges at their facility, because of

course there's state laws and there's

bylaws and there's a whole bunch of...

wouldn't say red tape more like yellow

tape that you need to to properly cross

in order to have order writing

privileges but, a dietitian can go ahead

and change the diet. Another thing that a

dietitian can do with order writing

privileges is recommend treatments for

something a little more invasive and

these things are tube feedings as well

as TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition) so let's first talk about tube

feedings. Tube feedings is a means of

artificial nutrition where a tube is

either inserted through your nose,

through your mouth, somewhere in your

stomach or in your intestine and you're

started on feedings. Dietitians can write

for tube feedings to be started. In my

hospital I do not have order writing

privileges I have dependent order

writing privileges which means I seek

permission from medical professional

before I start anything . So with the TPN as well dietitians can start TPN's

depending of course as I said earlier on

the discretion of their facility and

their state and how comfortable they are

was starting TPNs. So TPNs on the

other hand it's a little more invasive

but what if TPN is it's also another

form of artificial nutrition. So

basically you're infusing fluids which

are loaded with vitamins and amino acids

and sometimes lipids, if lipids are ordered

which are fats, and calories and dextrose

which is sugar to make sure that the

patient is adequately fed. Now TPNs, total

parenteral nutrition is used if the gut

doesn't work. Tube feedings are always the

first line of preferable feedings if the

individual for some reason cannot eat by

mouth. So I just wanted to share with you

just a few things what a dietitian can

and cannot do so this is not an

exhaustive list there's a lot more

things that dietitians do do and there's

a lot more things that a dietitian

cannot do. Well thank you guys for

particularly in fuel cells.

Fuel Cell is an

energy conversion device to

directly convert the chemical energy of

fuels such as hydrogen, natural gas,

methanol and ethanol, to electricity.

Fuel cell has a much higher efficiency than

the conventional internal combustion engines

because fuel cell can convert the

chemical energy of fuels

electrochemically without combustion.

I started fuel cell research when I joined

CSIRO Materials and Manufacturing Division

and Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. in Melbourne in 1991.

Since then, I published about 340 journal papers,

12 book chapters, and edited five books

in fuel cells and energy technologies.

My work has been cited over 12,500 times

and my h-index is 63,

which is among the highest in the field.

My achievements have been recognised

nationally and internationally

I am an adjunct Professor of the

Sunshine Coast University in Queensland

and awarded Guest Professorships by

Continental collisions, from Norway to Australia - Duration: 1:49.

It's a great honour to have been awarded

this title of John Curtin Distinguished Professor.

And it's also great to be back

in Australia after working in Europe for

more than 40 years. TIGeR includes

researchers from eight different

departments and centres, all working on

geoscience problems and it also gives me

the opportunity to interact with a wide

range of research groups. TIGeR has a

strong international profile and every

year I organise the TIGeR conference,

which brings together top researchers

from all over the world to Curtin to

discuss specific geoscience problems.

My own research is on the processes that

take place deep in the earth during

continental collisions, when pressure,

temperature and reactive fluids change.

For the last 10 years I've been working

in Norway which is a great place because

on the west coast, the rocks represent

the root zone of an ancient mountain

belt that was formed 600 million years ago,

due to the continental collision of

masses called Laurentia and Baltica.

Since coming to Curtin I've also got ARC

grants to study mountains in Central Australia.

Although these aren't formed by

continental collisions, they have other

tectonic features in common with rocks

in Norway, and together with colleagues

and students from Sydney and Adelaide,

we've been doing fieldwork north of

Alice Springs. I've also had the

opportunity since coming here, to apply

my fundamental research to more applied problems.

And we have a grant with CSIRO

to study how we could extract metals

from ore bodies deep in the earth.

Curtin is a really exciting place to

work and I'm very grateful for the

opportunities this university has given me.

My academic life is shaped by my belief

in the transformative: the transformation

of individuals, and the transformation of

society itself to through education. My current

research addresses urgent public issues.

With colleagues at UCLA,

the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,

the University of Toronto,

and Goldsmiths College London,

I'm collaborating on two international grants

on deaths in custody of indigenous and refugee groups.

Our project, which is led by Curtin,

is the first to approach this issue from the

transnational perspective of these four countries.

It will produce an innovative

platform to train students in law,

medicine and media, as well as having a

public impact on communities and policy makers.

Another pressing concern of my

research is on war, conflict and refugees.

This again involves active public

engagement and collaboration with

academic and non-academic organisations

such as the WA Museum and the Museum of

Modern Art in New York. A related aspect

of my research is to engage publicly, and

make a social impact on global issues

through media commentary and through creative forms

of advocacy. Last year I organised a

short film, Call to Account, that the

Human Rights Commission wants to use in

their work. Social analysis, creative

media and social engagement are all

entwined in my research.

Putting statistics in their place, and mapping those places! - Duration: 1:33.

To understand what I do, imagine you're a

researcher who makes a map of all the

places where something happened. It could

be a map of road accidents, or cases

of cancer, or perhaps a geological survey

of gold deposits in the desert or

galaxies in the distant universe.

Now we want to know if there's a pattern.

Is there a cluster of cancer cases? Where is

the best place to dig for gold? Is the

universe homogeneous on a large scale?

Well finding answers to those questions

is not straightforward and that's where

I come in. As a statistician my job is to

figure out how to analyse data and draw

conclusions correctly.

I'm a specialist in analysing spatial

patterns of points and that's a

challenge because it's not yet solved.

To attack it

my tools are basic scientific principles,

statistical ideas, mathematics, computers

and lots and lots of coffee. The results

can sometimes prove that an existing

method is wrong, but more often than not

I develop a new or better method and

implement it in software. I make the

software free and the reward for that is

a steady stream of thank you messages

that come in from researchers all around

the world, putting it to good use.

So there you have it, a snapshot of my

research in spatial statistics.

A distinguished historian… on a geological scale! - Duration: 1:50.

It's a real honour to receive this

recognition as John Curtin Distinguished Professor.

I've often thought I was

easily distinguished from other

professors so this serves as

confirmation of that. I'm a geochronologist

which is a kind of ancient historian

reconstructing the early

history of the earth through cryptic and

fragmentary evidence, usually contained

in the form of tiny mineral inclusions

in rocks like this one. Once extracted

those minerals can be dated for their

isotopic compositions using sensitive

mass spectrometers of the kind we have here

in the John de Laeter Centre. Since my

first appointment at Curtin in 1993

as research associate to Professor de Laeter himself,

I've contributed to the Centre's success

and Centre has contributed to mine.

With international collaborators still

flocking to Curtin to use the dating

techniques that we developed here.

The importance of accurate and innovative

dating to the earth sciences can't be

overstated and is demonstrated by my

personal record of averaging more than 90

citations per publish paper.

What started as an narrow specialty has

grown to being an essential part of all

geological survey work, and has

contributed to Curtin's success in ERA

rankings, achieving the maximum scores in

geology and geochemistry. But success is

not just about access to equipment and

technology, it's about people. People with

the right ideas, values and willingness

to collaborate and be part of something

bigger than their own often narrow

spheres of research. I served as head of

the department of applied geology for

six years, with the modest ambition to

elevate the group to become the best

geoscience school in the country. I believe

we've come a long way to achieving just that.
