Jeep Wrangler Raxiom LED Lighting Switch Kit (1987-2017 YJ, TJ & JK) Review & Install - Duration: 8:19.
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Raxiom
LED Lighting Switch Kit, fitting all 1987 and up Wranglers.
Today we're gonna talk through the installation of this kit, which I am going to give a two
out of three wrenches.
It may be a slightly easier install for you depending on the type of light that you're
installing and the connectors that come on that light.
However, in general, I'm gonna give this a two out of three wrenches and we'll say around
an hour to get this installed, but we'll talk more about the installation in just a second.
We're also gonna talk through the construction and a few of the features of this kit.
This is for anyone who's wiring up some auxiliary lighting onto your Wrangler and is looking
to make it very easy to get those new lights working properly.
Now with any light, you're going to need a switch.
Depending on the voltage, you may or may not need a relay.
You're definitely going to need a fuse.
If you have that relay, you're gonna be picking up power from the battery, also having your
switch leg, having to power out from the relay to your lights.
If you're not comfortable with automotive wiring, this can get very, very confusing,
and to build your own harness can be very difficult or impossible.
So if you're not comfortable with automotive wiring, if you're not purchasing, like, something
like this, the other way to get your lights wired up is to take it to a shop, which can
be more expensive.
This kit is very inexpensive and makes having a wiring harness and getting new lights wired
up with all of the included pieces safely and properly, a very, very easy process.
So like I said before, this does come ready for you to wire up, lights that will draw
up to 30 amps.
And if you're installing LED lights, that's a lot of lights.
LEDs draw very low amperage so you can put a lot of lights on this wiring harness if
you chose to.
It's set up with two pigtails, which is enough for one light in general.
So if you expand that to additional lights, you are going to have to do a little bit of
wiring, but all of the other components that are included with this kit will stand up to
30 amps of draw.
Of course, you have a switch included in this kit.
This is the switch, this part's the part that's actually gonna go inside the cab with you
and turn your new lights on and off.
There's two indicator lights on it, the "Off" red LED is always on.
When you push the button, then it'll switch over to the green, "On" LED, that one will
be illuminated.
It's just a momentary switch, it has a little bit of 3M style backing on it, so you can
stick it right on your dashboard.
In my opinion, it's a little bit of a flimsy switch, but it works just fine.
It just doesn't have that substantial feel to it that I prefer in my electronics.
If you are very comfortable with automotive wiring, you could always switch out the switch,
you could change the switch for a different style, maybe a rocker switch.
But right outta the box, this is gonna work absolutely fine, and for the price of this
kit, I think it fits very well.
You're also going to have a relay in this wiring harness.
Now, for those of you who aren't familiar with what a relay is, it essentially makes
it so that you can run a lot of amperage of draw.
You can have a lot of lights hooked up without having to have a switch that can hold up to
all of that amperage.
So this handles all of the amperage, this really just turns them on and off, there isn't
a lot of amperage flowing through your switch.
So this kit will come with your relay, this is a 40 amp relay, even though your fuse is
a 30 amp, so this is a little bit bigger than it needs to be, but that's always okay.
Having a little bit of overkill, you know you're not gonna have a problem with your
relay.
Speaking of your fuse, you have your inline fuse right here, this is a standard 30 amp
fuse that you can pick up from any auto parts store.
So if you were to ever have a problem and blow out the fuse, it's very easy to pop this
lid open, pull the fuse out, pop a new one in, and you're good to go.
Now the switch wires actually have a quick release here to the rest of the harness, which
is really nice so that it makes it easier to fish your switch wire through your firewall
during the installation.
Other than that, you have a couple of ring terminals here that are gonna connect onto
your battery.
You have a couple of female spade connectors here that are gonna connect on to your light,
and that's really everything you need to get your lights hooked up.
So for the installation, again, I'm giving this a two out of three wrenches, probably
about an hour to install it, but let's talk about exactly how to get this installed.
The first step, in my opinion, should be running from this area here, which is actually gonna
connect to your battery.
Lay the leads near the battery, you don't connect them at this point.
You'll secure your relay somewhere along the firewall, and then you'll stretch your leads.
You're gonna have one of these leads, is going to go to the lights, wherever those lights
are gonna be.
So route the wires nice and cleanly, use wire ties, strap everything up out of the way,
keep it away from hot and moving objects.
The other pair of leads is going to go to your switch.
That's the one that ends here with this connector, so you can disconnect this piece and just
get this to any rubber grommet that goes through your firewall.
You can always drill a hole, but make sure you use a rubber grommet to keep things from
chaffing.
So, this section here which is your actual switch, you're going to fish through the firewall,
going back out into the engine bay, peel the backing off of this, stick it on your dashboard,
and you're ready to go as far as the inside of the jeep goes.
When you pull this through your firewall, you're gonna reconnect it to the rest of your
harness here, and that's all you need to do as far as the switch goes.
Now, the final step is connecting your actual lights to this harness.
And as I said, this has two female spade connectors, a red and a black.
And the red and the black do matter with LED.
Oftentimes, LED lights are gonna be polarized, so you need to make sure that the positive
is the red, the negative is the black.
The only reason that I'm gonna give this a two out of three wrenches is that a lot of
lights will come just with bare wire pigtails on it.
So you are going to have to go purchase yourself a set of male spade connectors and either
crimp or solder those onto your lights and do whatever sort of weather proofing you wanna
do on the light side of things, whether that's wrapping it with electrical tape, using heat
shrink, whatever you wanna do there.
Once you have those male spade connectors on, you really just push them into your new
harness.
Remember these leads here that we had laying near the battery before?
Now you can connect them to the battery, of course red, positive, black, negative, and
then you're done.
You just press your switch and your light comes on, it's really just that simple.
The only difficult part, the only part that requires a little bit of work, a little bit
of expertise, is making the connection for the male spade connectors onto the wiring
that comes on your LED light.
Again, that's the only thing that makes this a two outta three wrenches.
Other than that, it's a very, very simple install.
So to get this installed, you're really just gonna need some traditional hand tools to
actually get those spade connectors onto your lights so that you can plug it into your new
harness.
You are going to need either a crimping tool or a soldering tool and of course, whatever
weather proofing method you like to use.
I think this harness is very fairly priced.
For about $25, you get this harness, which is going to give you everything you need minus
those spade connectors, to get a light wired up to your jeep.
Now, if you are comfortable with automotive wiring, if that's something you enjoy doing,
chances are you're probably not gonna purchase this.
You're going to buy the individual components, you're gonna build a harness for yourself
with a switch panel, and that's okay, that's not necessarily who this is for.
This is for those of you who aren't as comfortable with automotive wiring or at least want a
big jump-start to getting your lights wired up.
This is going to make things a lot easier for those of you who aren't as comfortable
with the wiring on your jeep.
So if you're looking to add some auxiliary lighting onto your jeep but you're not comfortable
with getting those new lights wired up, this is going to make it a lot easier, gives you
a big jump-start, a big leg up, and include all of the components you need, all at a very
fair price.
