The Caucasus: Mountains Full of Languages - Duration: 8:57.Caucasian.
That word comes to us from a rugged land where Europe smacks into Asia, sandwiched between
countries that grab headlines: Russia, Iran, Turkey.
But here's a headline for you: this little area is one of the world's great linguistic
hot zones, a place where the mountains are full of languages.
Welcome to the Caucasus.
Georgia... is a US state that's about 300 miles tall, with a population over 10 million.
Most everyone here speaks one language: English.
A turn of the globe away, straddling the Southeast of Europe is a country we call Turkey.
And east of Turkey there's another Georgia.
Watch what happens when I take Georgia and put it over Georgia.
There's more Georgia left.
It leaks into Russia and over into Azerbaijan.
It even covers part of Armenia and Turkey.
All these borders between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, but these are nothing compared
to the number of languages here.
As the Kurdish saying goes, "We have no friends but the mountains."
I don't know Kurdish or the more than 50 languages of the Caucasus, but Kurdish IS a distant
relative of the words I'm speaking right now.
It's in the Iranian branch of our Indo-European family, which is something it shares with
Scythian's last descendant, Ossetian.
You can hear echoes of familiar words like the word for door: "derî", "duar".
In Armenia, a door sounds similar: դուռ (dur).
But Armenian is a separate Indo-European branch.
Their unique alphabet was created by this gentleman scholar, Mr Mashtots, making Armenian
one of the rare languages in the region with its own old writings.
Some Armenians claim Mashtots also taught the Georgians how to write, but
but Georgians beg to differ.
Armenian splits another language down the middle in this disputed turf, where the name
you give it and whether you call the fighting in the 90s liberation or occupation,
is tense stuff.
This other language belongs to the country with the world's lowest capital, nearly 100
feet (30 meters) below sea level.
Azerbaijani, after all that Indo-European, looks strange.
Unless you know Turkish.
The Turkic family has multiple branches all over the Caucasus.
It builds long words with glued-on endings where the vowels harmonize.
A lot like Hungarian, remember?
Things aren't so Turkic up here in Europe's only Buddhist region.
This is Kalmykia, a Russian republic settled by Oirats, who speak a relative of Mongolian.
So there's Mongolic here.
There's Hellenic here, Caucasus Greek.
There's Semitic, Assyrian Neo-Aramaic.
But there was one obvious blob we ignored.
C'mon, who brings the big guns into this area?
Ahem, metaphorically speaking of course.
Russian, in the Slavic branch of Indo-European:
дверь (dver').
A couple years ago, Russia held the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi.
Drama ensued.
What attracted a lot of press was the exorbitant cost, but there's another controversy you
may have missed.
Ethnic Circassians have long considered Sochi their land, taken in the 1800s when the Russian
Empire vowed to conquer the Caucasus and pacify, or expel, every indigenous group.
One of the men in that army was Leo Tolstoy.
This is where he tasted war and started writing.
The last speaker of Sochi's Ubykh language died in Turkey in 1992.
With him perished the largest consonant inventory outside of Africa – over three times as
many as English!
And just to be extreme, only two basic vowels: a and ə.
This is the kind of special stuff that keeps language nerds infatuated with indigenous
Caucasian languages.
Indigenous... means something special here.
See, for linguists, there are "languages of the Caucasus" and then "Caucasian languages",
these smaller families born in and limited to the Caucasus.
Few vowels.
Many consonants.
Including throaty sounds: q͡χa, ʡa, ħa.
English has one such sound.
Arabic, several.
No competition for these Caucasian tongues!
Oh, and they probably had even more in the past.
But the real Caucasian hot topic came from one example in an old grammar of Tsova-Tush.
There was an intransitive verb with a subject that could resemble an object: I fell (and
it was my fault, like on purpose) vs fell me (on accident).
It sounds simple, but the implications were huge.
This example fell into the right hands and the concept of "ergativity" became a linguistic
rockstar.
In 1770, a German naturalist set out on an expedition to the Caucasus.
Trekking with a royal Kabardian and Georgian entourage, he took notes and divided Caucasian
languages into four families, each one with its own proto-language.
And he did this over a decade before a well-known speech by Sir William Jones that drew attention
to classifying Indo-European.
Later there did come a one-family-fits-all push to bundle them into Ibero-Caucasian.
The idea ultimately failed to win converts.
Today we count three families: Northwest, Northeast, South.
The south, Kartvelian, includes Georgian, an indigenous language
with its own ancient literature.
And the reason why Joseph Stalin, a native Georgian, had odd accent patterns in his speeches.
Tsova-tush, though, that's in Northeast Caucasian, a family native to the border republics of
Dagestan and Chechnya.
Chechen has an oddly large number of vowels for a Caucasian language.
This line marks a republic where they speak a Georgian dialect.
They're on good terms.
But not so these dots, where they broke away in 1992 with 13 months of ethnic strife.
The local Abkhaz is part of Northwest Caucasian, the family of Circassian
and your old consonant-full friend, Ubykh.
This family has been blamed for making Caucasian hard to classify.
See, they have roots with one measly consonant, and they do something called "head-marking".
As a result, they can lose resemblances more quickly, making it harder to compare them
and find siblings.
Caucasian isn't one family.
Is it one area though?
Perhaps the languages coexisted long enough to pick up each other's habits.
It's not out of the question; we saw how it happened in Mesoamerica.
It's still debated if this even fits for the Caucasus.
So maybe not a language area, but definitely an area with lots of languages.
And you've still got to be wondering, why?
Why so many?
Johanna Nichols tells us the answer may not be on these speakers' lips
but under their feet.
Geography gives some families spread zones, easy terrain for expanding.
Other terrains are residual zones, holding languages in place.
Which zone is responsible here?
I hope you said... both!
Languages from the lowlands flow into the area, then the mountains keep them.
So the three Caucasian families survived in place and didn't spread beyond.
Over time, others passed through and got stuck, and the diversity grew.
We end up with this map, a map of more than 50 languages across seven families,
each splash of color with its own stories to tell.
Stick around and subscribe for language.

All 7 Emirates of UAE in under 7 Minutes! | Things to do in Dubai | How to travel better - Duration: 6:39.Hey, hey! So I'm Conor, the Language Tsar,
and in this video I'm gonna bring you
on a trip of all seven Emirates in the UAE.
Right there behind you can see the Burj
Khalifa which is the tallest building in
the world and that's here in Dubai. So
while most visitors of the United
Emirates know about Dubai and
Abu Dhabi, the cities, the country has in fact
7 Emirates. Abu Dhabi is in fact the
biggest Emirate by far as you can see
from the map. And the Emirates are in
fact non-contiguous which means at times
you're going to pass through one emirate
to go to another and suddenly you'll find
yourself back in the previous emirate. So
come with me and my trip away from the
glitz and the glamour of Dubai and Abu
Dhabi. Sharjah is our second Emirate of the
day. Not too exciting to come here but
two down, five to go.
Yeah, there's a beautiful dome here.
And here you can see behind a little bit
of the waterfront in Sharjah.
This is very close to Dubai. We drove here
even with heavy traffic in about 30 to
40 minutes. So in contrast to Dubai
Sharjah is a dry Emirate which means
you cannot bring alcohol here, so
definitely be very careful if you have
alcohol in your car when you're in
Dubai and if you're crossing here, that's a
criminal offense and it's treated very
seriously.
So you've been warned.
I made it to Ajman stop number three.
Emirate number three.
So made it to Emirate number four. This
is Umm al-Quwain. And this is a nice airplane
behind me in the colors of the country
of the United Arab Emirates, so just
going to take a little stop here before
heading to our fifth Emirate of the day.
People think it never rains in the
Emirates. Look at this torrential
downpour!
So I made it all the way to Emirate number
six. That's Fujairah. That's very close to Oman.
That's on the border with Oman by the
seaside as you can see right behind me. And
it's a little bit of a place to relax.
Not so hectic, so quiet here.
We're about to go and see Emirate number 7
of 7 which is Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi
of course is probably the second most
renowned Emirate after Dubai. And we
gonna go to a oasis town called
Al Ain which looks beautiful in the photos.
So we're gonna head there.
So made it number seven of seven back
in Abu Dhabi. Here we're in Al Ain which is called the
Garden City and here just beside the
main fort in Al Ain which is on the
border with Oman. We're very close to
Oman here a long way from the actual
city of Abu Dhabi, which is a way way across the
other side of... of the Emirates. And
Abu Dhabi itself is actually the biggest
Emirate. It's like pretty enormous. So been to
Abu Dhabi before ,a couple years
ago, I came here today Al Ain.
That's it! 7 of 7! Let's go back to Dubai.
So after my whirlwind tour of the seven Emirates
how do I feel about the parts of the
country that are outside those two main
tourist destinations - Abu Dhabi and Dubai?
Well actually I'm a little bit meh about
them. The typography was really
interesting on the way down to Fujairah,
looked very lunar and it's quite
attractive. And also Al Ain,
beautiful town to go and visit but other than
those two parts that there were on of the
itinerary I really didn't think that you
needed to go and visit them in
particular. If you're a frequent visitor
to the Emirates, like you go quite
often to Dubai or Abu Dhabi or if you
even live there, then you should
definitely should go and check out those
other parts of the country, well
worth about visiting because you really
should get to know the entire country,
not just those two glamorous cities of
Dubai and Abu Dhabi. So that concludes my
tour of the 7 Emirates. If you've
been to the United Arab Emirates to Dubai
or Abu Dhabi or any the other five
Emirates, then write me below in the
comments section your impressions about what you thought of the country,
of each particular Emirate. And I love
reading all your comments because it's
great information and ideas about where
to travel to next.

Video: Mostly dry weekend, but a couple showers possible (4-28-17) - Duration: 3:28.ECHO CAM
>> GOOD AFTERNOON.
WE HAVE A LOT OF SUNSHINE OUT
THERE.
WE HAD A LITTLE COLD FRONT THAT
WENT THROUGH EARLIER, BUT I LOT
OF TIMES YOU CAN HAVE A COLD
FRONT GOES THROUGH THAT DOESN'T
CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE THAT
MUCH.
IT IS STILL A MILD DAY AND BLUE
SKY.
IF YOU ARE WATCHING THE TREES,
YOU CERTAINLY NOTICED THE
GREENING UP OF THE BOTTOM HALF
OF YOUR SCREEN.
WE HAVE TEMPERATURES IN THE
MIDDLE 70'S IT RIGHT NOW, BUT AS
WE GO FORWARD WE ARE LOOKING AT
PERHAP UPPER 70'S.
A77 FOR A HIGH WITH THE SUNSHINE
STICKING AROUND, A VERY NICE
FINISH FOR THIS FRIDAY.
NOTHING IMMEDIATELY TO THE WEST
IN TERMS OF CLOUDS OR RAIN, BUT
THERE IS A COLD FRONT GETTING
ITS ACT TOGETHER OVER THE GREAT
LAKES, AND THAT WILL COME
THROUGH TOMORROW MORNING WITH A
SHOWER OR TWO.
I THINK 95% OF THE DAY TOMORROW
IS DRY.
THIS MESS OVER THE CENTRAL PART
OF THE COUNTRY DOES NOT ARRIVE
UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY.
SO, FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, IT
IS GOING TO SHAKE OUT PRETTY
NICE.
WE HAVE ONE MORE MILD DAY WITH
TEMPERATURES WELL INTO THE 70'S
THIS EVENING IF YOU HAVE PLANS,
WE ARE LOOKING AT 60'S.
IT IS STILL PRETTY NICE OUT
THERE.
THE CLOUDS INCREASE TONIGHT AND
HERE YOU SEE EARLY TOMORROW
MORNING, AT SHOWER HERE AND
THERE, NOT A MAJOR PLAYER
WHATSOEVER.
I THINK WE SEE A GOOD AMOUNT OF
SUNSHINE BY TOMORROW AFTERNOON.
SO, IT TURNS OUT TO BE A NICE
SATURDAY, BUT EVEN THOUGH WE
START SUNDAY WITH SOME SUN, A
WARM FRONT LIST TO THE NORTH AND
THAT COULD RING ANOTHER SHOWER
OR TWO SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
AFTER DARK, I THINK IT STARTS TO
RAIN HAD A GOOD CLIP THROUGH
MOST OF THE AREA.
A LOT OF THIS RAIN WHILE
LINGER INTO THE DAY ON MONDAY.
THE TEMPERATURE TREND SORT OF
LIKE A ROLLER COASTER, MILD
TODAY, STILL MILD TOMORROW, BUT
A LITTLE BIT COOLER, I THIN
SUNDAY IS A LOT COOLER.
WE WILL BE IN THE 50'S.
AND THEN NEXT WEEK IS A
CHALLENGE, BECAUSE WE ARE IN
BETWEEN AIR MASSES.
THE WARMEST PART ON MONDAY WILL
BE TO THE SOUTH AND WEST.
IF YOU ARE IN THE NORTHEAST
KINGDOM INTO MAINE, IT COULD BE
QUITE CHILLY ON MONDAY.
IT IS ALL ABOUT LOCATION AS WE
HEAD INTO THE EARLY PART OF NEXT
WEEK AND THEN GOING FORWARD IT
STAYS A LITTLE BIT AND AS WE
HEAD INTO TUESDAY WITH A STORM
SYSTEM MOVING OVER THE REGION,
SO SORT OF UGLY ON MONDAY AND
TUESDAY.
AND BEYOND THAT, IT IS STILL
PRETTY CLOUDY WITH TEMPERATURES
IN THE 50'S.
WE HAVE A MIX OF ABOVE AVERAGE
WITH SON
-- WITH SUN.
THE WEEKEND RECAP SHOWS IT IS
MAINLY DRY.
THE TWO DUBBED CHANCES FOR
SHOWERS ARE SUNDAY AND MONDAY.

Drug Take Back Day planned for Saturday - Duration: 1:32.THE CITY OF MANCHESTER'S POLICE
DEPARTMENT AS WELL AS THE
HOSPITAL WILL SERVE AS DROP-OFF
LOCATIONS.
>> THERE ARE JUST SO MANY
SCENARIOS WHY IT'S BAD TO HAVE
THOSE DRUGS IN YOUR HOUSE.
RAY: SO ACROSS THE COUNTRY,
OFFICIALS ARE URGING PEOPLE TO
GET RID OF THEIR OLD
PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE BY HOLDI
A DRUG TAKEBACK DAY.
IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, THERE ARE
ABOUT 100 LOCATIONS THAT WILL
ACCEPT THE DRUGS AND SAFELY
DISPOSE OF THEM.
JON: THE ONLY THING WE DON'T
WANT IS ILLEGAL DRUGS AND
WE DON' WANT SYRINGES BUT
, ANYTHING ELSE, ANYTHING YOU'VE
EVER GOTTEN.
>> THEY CAN BE IN BOTTLES.
THEY CAN BE IN BOXES.
THEY CAN BE IN A BAG.
YOU KNOW THERE'S NO HARD AND
FAST RULE AS TO WHAT THEY ARE IN
OR HOW THEY ARE PACKAGED.
RAY: LAST YEAR, NEW HAMPSHIRE
COLLECTED MORE THAN 12,000
POUNDS OF UNWANTED DRUGS.
LAW ENFORCEMENT SAYS THIS IS A
CHANCE FOR PEOPLE TO BE PART OF
THE SOLUTION NOT THE PROBLEM.
JON: NOBODY WANTS TO BE THAT
PERSON THAT FINDS OUT SOMETHING
IN THEIR HOUSE ENDED UP LEADING
TO SOMEBODY'S DEATH OR
ADDICTION.
RAY: IN MANCHESTER, IN ADDITION
TO TAKING BACK THE DRUGS, THEY
ARE HOPING TO TACKLE ANOTHER
PROBLEM.
CHIEF WILLARD: I ALSO DECIDED
LET'S HELP PEOPLE WITH THEIR
SENSITIVE DOCUMENTS TO PROTECT
THEM AGAINST IDENTITY THEFT
, BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN SEEING A
LOT OF THAT.
RAY: SO A SHREDDER WILL BE
AVAILABLE.
AND THE CHIEF SAYS HE'S REALLY
LOOKING TO START A DIALOGUE WITH
PARENTS AND CHILDREN, SO THE
DISPOSAL SITE AT THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT WILL HAVE A BIT OF A
CARNIVAL ATMOSPHERE.
CHIEF WILLARD RIGHT IN OUR
: PARKING LOT, WE'RE GOING TO
HAVE TOUCHDOWN STATIONS WHERE
YOU'LL HAVE POLICE CANINES DOING
