Book Review of "Mind Change" - Duration: 6:26.

Hi Debbi Mack here, and I'm doing a review of a book I just read called "Mind Change:

How Digital Technologies Are Leaving Their Mark on Our Brains".

And this book is probably scarier than any science fiction or dystopian novel I've read

lately.

Basically, it's about how the brain is a plastic organ.

When I say that I mean that the brain changes physically in response to external stimuli

and I know about this personally, because I have a movement disorder called dystonia

and brain plasticity is very important to me, because I need to always be doing things

to try to help change my brain to perhaps improve my dystonia.

Okay, I'm not going to go into all that.

I might at another time, because dystonia is something most people don't know about.

But, in any case, this book talks about how in essence by being engaged constantly in

things like social media and digital ... no, online gaming or video games ... things of that nature

... our brains can be changing in ways that are harmful to us potentially and we could

be not only isolating ourselves, paradoxically isolating ourselves while we're all connecting

with each other and when I say isolating ourselves what I mean is that the brain can only handle

so much information and there's so much information on the Internet that just comes at you like

a wave, like a tsunami.

Excuse me if I'm a little throaty right now.

It comes at you so fast and so much that the brain simply can't take it all in.

So you end up, in essence, siloing yourself among a certain group and that group ends

up becoming like your little bubble that you live within.

I've often heard social media being compared to an echo chamber, especially Facebook where

what you're doing, you're trying to get followers and likes.

So you're trying to get as many people to like you as possible or your thoughts or whatever.

And the thing is it poses kind of an interesting philosophical question.

What price individuality, I guess?

And this is a question posed actually in one of my favorite old TV shows, "The Prisoner".

The idea of individual versus collective thinking.

I could really go on about this for a while, but to keep it simple this book poses a lot

of thought-provoking questions about what social media and the Internet and virtual

reality and constant connectedness is doing to us.

Things that we should be thinking about and worried about.

And I think the ultimate thing that we need to worry about is privacy.

She discusses that at the end.

And the idea of being so connected that nothing is held back, that you are always telling

people about yourself, revealing everything about you, and it's as if your own identity

is reliant on the opinions of others in order to be justified, if that makes any sense.

You as an individual have a point of view, and you should be allowed to express it, and

not everybody in the world is going to like that point of view, but it's one of the foundations

of the United States Constitution is the right to free speech, and if you're not allowed

to express an opinion, we've lost something.

And if you're not allowed the right to privacy, we've lost something major, too.

So, I don't know, if this has made sense to anybody ... I hope it has ... I would highly

recommend you read this book.

It will give you food for thought.

"Mind Change" by Susan Greenfield.

And with that, I will just say see you next week.

Thanks!
