Hello fellow travelers!
We are in Sepulveda, in the province of Segovia.
We took a quick trip here for several reasons.
First of all because Sepulveda is one of the "most beautiful Spanish villages"
and you know we want to visit them all.
And second, because it's my parents' birthday. My father was born next to here.
He is going to invite us to eat some lamb.
We are in The Plaza de España.
Behind us there is the most characteristic building of Sepulveda: the old castle.
Attached to it there is a noble house from the 16th Century.
It has a stork nest, and you know we love storks!
This area has been populated since the Iron Age.
It was an important village during the Roman times.
It was called "Septem Publica", that is, "seven doors", and from here comes the name "Sepulveda".
You see that we have the wall just behind us, and this is one of the entrance doors of the village.
When Christians reconquered this area from the Moors,
they had to give a lot of inducements to new citizens to move here because the life conditions,
due to the climate and the hard soil, were very hard.
So, that's the reason they wrote Sepulveda's laws.
In other words, it was a tax haven!
There is a legend: on the outskirts of Sepulveda there was a very important battle
between the Count Fernán González and the Moorish mayor, Abu Daad.
On the facade of the "Moorish house" you can see the sculpture of Abu Daad's head.
So, you know how the battle ended, right?
Another characteristic building is the council jail.
It was active from the Medieval age until our Civil War in 1936. It's currently the Tourism Office.
We are not alone! Hello family!
Before the "light" meal we are going to have, we are in the Restaurant Asador El Panadero.
We are going to have some simple, nice appetizers…
"bollos preñaos" (a piece of bread with chorizo inside)… Look how yummy they are!
Just to have opened it, it went straight to my love handles…
Another historic moment: During the War of Independence against the French,
there was an important battle here.
It was the only one in which the personal Imperial guards of Napoleon fought. They lost the battle…
By the way, El Empecinado (a famous guerrilla leader) acted around this area.
He hid in these caves around the "Hoces del Duratón" that you can see behind us.
We have come to Villafranca del Condado. This is the village where my father was born
and the place where my cousins and I spent part of the summer when we were children.
We are going to have lunch in Asador David.
We could say that the owners are part of our family.
Their lamb in the oven is marvelous and we do know that it's not overcooked.
It's nice to eat in Sepulveda, but don't forget this place!
How long has this lamb been in the oven?
2 hours before we turn it upside down. Then half an hour more.
How about the sauce? Is it water? Or lard?
Some water and salt. That's all.
It looks yummy!
How was the lunch?
It was perfect!
Why is lamb the best dish to celebrate a birthday?
Because it is a tradition from Segovia and from my village.
I guess you have been eating it since you were a child.
Yes of course, and also when I was younger and even now that I'm a senior!
Charo, how is the "ponche"? (Segovian pie).
Yummy!
What ingredients does it have?
It has marzipan, custard, toasted sugar… and more things… it's exquisite!
Well, fellow travelers, after this huge lunch, we have to go back home to take a nap…
We wanted to go for a walk but the weather is not nice for walking…
Here, in Castilnovo's church we say goodbye to you. We hope you like the video. If so, share it, please.
Don't forget that we'd like to get to know your villages!
See you on our next video next Sunday!
