Youtube daily Apr 2 2018

When I first moved to Stanford from Harvard I got my first close-up view of Silicon Valley;

this was about a year and a half ago.

And what most struck me was the hubris, the arrogance that I encountered there.

The general view of a reasonably high up computer scientist is that history began around about

the Google IPO or maybe the founding of Facebook and everything before that is the Stone Age

and is of no possible interest to the world that has been transformed by Silicon Valley.

And I had a hard time persuading people that they didn't invent social networks, social

networks have always existed and all that they did was to create large indeed vast online

social networks bigger and faster really that anything that has existed before, but not

I think fundamentally different in the way that they work.

And a good illustration of this is that extraordinary era of networks that I think began right back

in the early 1500s almost exactly 500 years ago with the reformation, that network driven

revolution wouldn't have happened without the printing press and it's the beginning

of a succession of waves of network revolution.

For example, the scientific revolution of the 17th century is essentially the result

of there being a distributed network of scholars all over Europe and beyond innovating in the

realm of natural science.

The enlightenment is a comparable network driven revolution in political thought.

And one part of that 18th century network, which is tremendously important, is Freemasonry.

Now, most people have heard of Freemasonry, probably know where there's a Masonic lodge

in their town, but in my experience, not many people know that much about the history of

Freemasonry.

That's partly because the Masons themselves have a kind of fake history that dates freemasonry

back to the very ancient times.

In truth it something that got going in the British Isles in the 18th century and was

a kind of Facebook like phenomenon of male sociability in 18th century Europe and indeed

it crossed the Atlantic and became a big part of American life in the colonial era.

Masonic lodges were essentially clubs.

They were clubs that stood apart from the existing structures of social order.

The early modern division of society into ranks or estates was set aside, religious

divisions were set aside and in Masonic lodges, at rather ritualistic dinners men of all classes

and men of different denominations could meet and mingle and exchange ideas.

And often these ideas were drawn from the prevailing ideas of the 18th century.

So it's quite hard to understand the enlightenment and indeed the American and French Revolutions

without recognizing that a structure within which ideas spread was the structure of Masonic

lodges.

If you look at the people who signed the Declaration of Independence, look at some of the key players

in the American Revolution it's surprising how many were Freemasons, including George

Washington himself.

I tell the story in the Square and the Tower of Paul Revere, he of the famous ride and

another Bostonian revolutionary Joseph Warren and show that one reason they were able to

exert a very important leadership role when the revolution began was that they were so

well connected in Boston society through their membership of a Masonic lodge as well as other

more political clubs.

So I think that illustrates one important point and that is that you don't need the

Internet to have an international network that can be really quite powerful when it

is mobilized.

The other point that's worth adding is that as so often in the history of social networks

conspiracy theories have sprung up around the Freemasons and if you go online and Google

freemasonry you'll get a kind of interesting mix of content produced by Masons and content

produced by people who suspect Freemasons of being some kind of sinister conspiracy.

And this is one of the things that makes writing the history of social networks quite difficult

there's this panumber of mystery the theorist who writes about conspiracies make it quite

hard for us serious scholars to write about those subjects.

You have to strip away a lot of myth-making in order to get at the reality.

Two Trail Runners Heard A Rustling Noise In The Forest – Then Found Five Frightened Creatures - Duration: 4:54.

Ashley Blake, and her training partner Joshua Scott, were running through the forest when

a faint rustling caught their attention.

The pair decided to interrupt their jog and investigate.

That was when they found five frightened little animals.

The Barkley Fall Classic is a testing 31-mile

race through the Brushy Mountains in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee.

The event is designed to test the limits of runners' endurance.

So, when Blake and Scott signed up to compete in 2018, they knew that they would have to

train hard.

While the race wasn't scheduled to take place until September 2018, by March of that

year, Blake and her training partner Scott, both of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, had their running

regime well underway.

And that month, they visited Frozen Head State Park, where the Barkley Fall Classic takes

place.

During their training run, the pair would get an idea of the kind of terrain that they

would be facing during the event.

The landscape was rough and rugged, which no doubt added to the challenges facing Blake

and Scott.

The pair were planning to complete the full 31-mile course around the park.

So, they put their heads down and got to work.

Halfway through their run, however, something caught their eye.

And it was so shocking that it forced them to abandon their training session.

Blake and Scott were making their way down a wooded track when they spotted a pile of

black fur.

Upon further investigation, the runners could make out five tiny bodies.

And despite the bitterly cold temperatures, the animals were still alive.

In March 2018 Blake told The Dodo, "It was just a little rustling that caught us.

It's usual to hear forest critters, and that's what we expected.

We turned and saw this black pile.

It was five puppies huddled together".

The pair had stumbled across five adorable black Labrador puppies.

They were completely alone in the forest, and were clustered together to keep warm.

The sight tugged on Blake and Scott's heartstrings.

As a result, they knew that they had to help.

"They were terrified and crying," Blake recalled.

"They settled down once they realized we weren't going to harm them, and we were

warm".

"they were dumped without food, water, blanket or their mother".

Leaping into action, the pair scooped the puppies up and delivered them to a park ranger.

Sadly, he wasn't even shocked by the runners' story.

In fact, he told Blake and Scott that pets are often dumped in the park.

The park ranger explained that people leave animals in that area because it's so remote.

As a result, they believe that they can ditch pets there without being seen.

And in this case, it appeared that those responsible had gotten away with their actions.

Luckily, though, the five puppies had been found before anything too terrible could happen

to them.

And they were now in the safe hands of Blake and Scott, who, along with the park ranger,

were eager to get the animals' lives back on track.

The ranger agreed that he would look after the puppies at his home for the time being.

After that, he planned to hand them over to an animal shelter, where they would hopefully

all find loving homes and families to take care of them.

By this point, however, Blake and Scott were already invested in the five dogs' futures.

So, they later transported the puppies to the shelter themselves.

And the heartwarming story didn't end there.

Blake's training partner Scott decided to adopt one of the dogs, in fact, whom he later

named Barkley.

The puppy slotted into his new family nicely, quickly bonding with Scott's two other dogs.

And he wasn't the only member of the litter to have his happy ending.

Eventually, forever homes were found for all of the puppies.

But if it hadn't been for Blake and Scott, they might not even have survived for another

day.

So, it was certainly a job well done by the two runners.

Clearly proud of her exploits, in March 2018 Blake posted her story to the Trail And Ultra

Running group's Facebook page.

The site is usually reserved for posts about marathon running.

Nonetheless, Blake's animal rescue tale went down a storm.

Relaying the details of the rescue, Blake wrote, "Halfway through a Barkley Fall Classic

50k training run in Frozen Head, my training partner and I found a litter of five shivering

puppies.

With freezing temperatures and no food, they surely would not have made the night".

Explaining how she and Scott had stepped in to help the puppies, Blake added, "The wonderful

rangers met us and will bring them to the shelter today.

Now we can add saving puppies to the list of ultra-running adventures".

She later returned to the running site to add, "We took the puppies this morning to

the shelter…

'Barkley' is now part of my friend's family, he made a perfect birthday present".

Who the hell's aboard that?

Impossible.

Brothers, it's the Autobots! Shoot them down!

Joshua!

Hey, Baldy!

Hey, it's me! Hey!

Bring it over now! Let's go.

Hurry up, run!

- Hurry! Come on! - Let's go! Move it!

Guys! Come on. Give it to me now!

Looks like we might have company.

We're hit! We're hit!

They live, they talk, we're dead.

- Kill them all. - Pleasure.

I count ten below!

I thought you said you had one prototype get infected.

Now he's got operational control of my other 50.

Come on.

Climb, climb!

Surround them.

I may have started the apocalypse, but you brought your family.

And that's, you know, terrible parenting.

Oh, I'm about one second away from knocking you out,

taking the bomb, and just leaving you here.

Please, do me a favor.

Optimus, Autobots, you alive?

- Come on, bitch! - Come on!

Evac! Evac!

We're getting flanked!

We got company below!

Oh!

My fat ass is stuck! Bee, take the shot!

Oh!

- Into the elevator! Get in. - Okay.

Come on.

Get down, get down!

-- Close the door! Close the door!

Won't go! It's not closing!

There's too much weight.

- Get back down to Bumblebee! - Dad,no!

Hey! You want me!

Center elevator.

Center elevator.

He's gonna be okay.

Alien bomb! Alien bomb, coming through!

Clear the way! Clear the... Hi, kids.

Coming through, ladies!

Excuse me! Excuse me, ladies! Excuse me!

Oh, my God!

How do you say, "Get the fuck out of the way" in Chinese?

Ahhh!

That's a long way down.

You've got to be kidding me.

No!

Come on.

Whoa!

I'm coming for you!

Never should have hidden that truck.

You should have never came after my family.

Tough luck, Yeager. We all have family.

Yeah, but I'm gonna live to see mine.

Where is my escaped bounty?

Autobots at this location.

Prime is close.

Do whatever you have to do.

I intend to.

- Darcy! - Joshua!

We got three more coming in from that way!

Bee, where's Tessa?

Dad!

We got a real dilemma here. Okay? I created incredible robots.

It's all designed to kick that fat Transformer's ass.

So, really, this is a no-win situation.

It's over.

That was mean.

Hey! I'm sorry if you can't handle the cold-hearted truth!

Optimus, what are my orders with these humans?

Can I squish the bald guy?

They're in trouble.

Nah! This isn't our fight!

I'm done being an underdog. Underdogs suck!

I say they get what they deserve.

What's the play, Prime?

It's time for reinforcements.

Recognize one of your Knights.

THE LEGEND EXISTS.
