THE TALK OF THE TOWN!
As soon as it was released in July 1991, it was established as a record-breaking hit across all-America.
The ultimate action game, Sonic the Hedgehog, dragged game fans throughout the world into a swirl of deep emotion and excitement in the blink of an eye.
[America's TV CM that created a sensation]
From its impact, Sonic returned faster and more powerful with a new friend and loaded with an exciting 2P mode.
This is Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The one who worked on its development is the genius programmer Naka Yūji.
His brain created a game world made up of supersonic speed action and vivid graphics.
Dreams Come True (Nakamura Masato) is in charge of the music.
In this game, the new competitive 2P mode will be introduced as well.
With the addition of Special Stages with a sense of 3D, the world of games has expanded beyond the limits.
Now we'll introduce the main characters.
The World's Super Hero
First is the well-known super hero of the world: the wind-leaping Sonic!
He fights against his arch-nemesis Dr. Eggman to save his animal friends. Good luck, Sonic!
Sonic's New Partner:
Sonic's New Partner: Tails!
This is Tails!
Tails is a cute fox that flies in the sky with his two tails. He's a little scatterbrained, but he is a very reliable new partner to Sonic!
The Evil Genius Scientist
Dr. Eggman
He's Dr. Eggman!
And this is the evil genius scientist, Dr. Eggman.
This time accompanied with the ultimate weapon Death Egg, he stands in Sonic and Tails's way.
[Yuji Naka - Sonic 2 chief programmer, born September 17, 1965. Joined SEGA in '84, went to the US in August '91 to be SOA's employee. Currently VICE PRESIDENT of STI. Major works include: "Phantasy Star Online 2", "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Sonic the Hedgehog 2", among others.]
The creator of these charming characters is the game developer Naka Yūji-san.
He is a genius programmer working in America's Silicon Valley.
I think it's more fun for two humans to play against each other.
It's fun to play games alone too, but it's all the more fun to play games with another human being.
So we decided to introduce a 2P mode this time.
Not to mention, even when you're playing a 1P game,
you can control the Miles character, and if you're asking why we added him,
well, a lot of people have siblings, don't they?
Older brothers, younger sisters and so on. So that's why we added him.
I think that a younger sister must be sitting next to her older brother and watching him play.
She thinks, "this looks fun but I don't think I can play it."
And she's holding another control pad and can hobble around while he plays. That's what we wanted to achieve.
Since it's more enjoyable for both parties to play.
I'd really like for everyone to play together.
Action games have always been around as they are until now, but it gets irritating to play through the parts you've already done.
So, since it feels nice to get through parts you've figured out even faster,
we let you play as Sonic at a comfortable pace,
and as you get used go it, you'll get to understand the map and so on.
By doing so, you're going to run faster,
and it's going to feel better to get to the goal without a moment's delay. I thought it would feel great to be able to go quicker that way.
There were times where you couldn't climb up hill roads and such on the way.
And you had to try again and go back there at full speed.
In this game,
We added a new action called the spin dash. By crouching on the spot and pressing the button,
you'll be able to spin dash even through hill roads. You can accelerate from the spot.
Because of this, the game will be a bit more comfortable, it's so that you don't get too exasperated.
I aimed for it to always be comfortable and fun to play no matter how many times it's replayed.
But I also challenged myself into making something really neat with the Mega Drive thus far,
so I think it turned out into something really great.
There is a zone called Casino Night,
but I also highly recommend zones like Metropolis.
MAGAZINE EDITORS-IN-CHIEF TALK SONIC 2
Hirokazu Hamamura: It's got that feeling of speed.
It feels like riding a jet coaster.
I was surprised by the thrilling development caused by that speed.
I was honestly really excited that it's gone this far.
When you play 1 and then 2, and it's not just with Sonic,
you can make estimations to a certain extent.
You think that 2 might be like this because 1 was like this. I think it will betray you in that way.
So enthusiasts might think that there is quite a lot to 2.
As I was thinking, it brought 3 or 4 times as many amazing moments,
so I believe those enthusiasts will be able to play it satisfied.
I feel like it will become a standard for a new era.
A standard for games that will come out in the near future.
Yōji Kawaguchi: It certainly differs from other action games.
First, there's the feeling of speed. That definitely sets it apart.
It's remarkably different from other games on the Super Famicom or PC Engine games.
Sonic 2 has greatly upgraded the highly famed feeling of speed in the first game.
I guess you could call it a bewildering sense of thrill. That side of the game is seen throughout.
There are mechanisms set up here and there to make you able to truly experience it,
so it might be the kind of game that 10 players out of 10 will want.
I think the game's variation and length has been greatly improved because you can play through the 2P mode.
Besides that, there are features such as pinball handling.
It is quite intricate in that way, so you could say that the game is spreading out farther.
People who are looking forward to it will think that it is quite an upgrade over the original.
TAKAHASHI YUMIKO AND OMI TOSHINORI ATTEMPT SONIC 2! Good luck!
Sonic 2! Sparkle!
I don't think I can move forward.
I get it! Naka: You should try rolling...
[Yumiko Takahashi - Singer, performing in Game Gear CF. Born January 7, 1974 in Saitama prefecture, blood type A. Currently attending Temple University JAPAN.]
Oh-oh, my... Ah, how lucky.
Ah, I died. Naka: Actually that's a time over. Time has run out.
Please make sure to play a lot and take lots of notes.
Yo, hello there. I'm a self-proclaimed game master, Omi Toshinori.
Oh, he is... Uh oh...
I don't get it...
[Toshinori Omi - Actor, self-proclaimed game master. Born December 7, 1965 in Tokyo, blood type B. Major film performances include: "Exchange Students", "Lonely Heart", "Chizuko's Younger Sister" and "Tsuribaka Nisshi 4", among others.]
Ah, damn it!
Oh, I get it!
This is pretty awesome.
The feeling of speed is really there, and the music is good. Besides that, I was surprised by how beautiful the visuals were.
The characters are cute too.
I highly recommend this,
but I'm gonna go home today and practice some more.
