23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

In this 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Church proposes the text regarding the fraternal correction.

The duty of brothers and sisters to correct one another.

And also a lesson about communal prayer.

I'll start with fraternal correction, in Exodus 33: 7-9.:

" You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel; when you hear me say anything, you shall warn them for me.

If I tell the wicked man that he shall surely die, and you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked man from his way,

he (the wicked man) shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death.

But if you warn the wicked man, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses to turn from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself."

Here's what we have in Ezekiel. Now ... in the Gospel of Matthew, ch. 18:15-17:

""If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.

If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that 'every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.'

If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector."

On the basis of these two teachings, Lev 19: 17:

"You shall not hate any of your kindred in your heart. Reprove your neighbor openly so that

you do not incur sin because of that person.

What is interesting is that these verses of Leviticus is interpreted in rabbinic tradition

using the image of the mote and the beam, (which is also present in Matthew, 7)

in a way different from what we know in Matthew.

I will then paraphrase this tradition ...

and the commentary basically says this:

You must rebuke your brother ... but your brother or sister will not always listen to your rebuke.

If, for example, you say to your brother or sister, in a gentle and loving way:

"Take out the mote that is in your own eye!"

It may be that your brother answer in a rude way:

"You have not noticed? First remove the beam that is in your eye."

It is an interesting teaching that is followed by the example of Rabbi Akiba.

Rabbi Akiba is really a saint of Judaism,

who died martyred during the persecution of Emperor Hadrian (2nd century), because of his faith.

It is said that he was very humble. And the more they rebuked him, more he responded with love.

Then see the wealth of this commentary: on the one hand, some do not accept reproof, others, like Rabbi Akiba,

show love when there is a rebuke.

Now, let's say a few words about communal prayer,

in Matthew's Gospel, 18.

"I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father.

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

Again, the rabbinic tradition, in the Treaty of the Fathers of Mishnah, says:

When ten (or even five, three, two or one) are sitting together to engage in the Torah,

the presence of God rests upon them.

Let's see this resonance: Jesus says: "Where two or three are gathered in my name ..."

And the rabbinic tradition, "when ten, five, three ... are gathered around the Torah."

It is a very delicate way of Matthew, or even from the mouth of Jesus,

to tell us that Jesus is the living and incarnate Torah.

He fulfills the Torah, he does not abolish it but live it in fullness.

After the Gospel continues, "I am among them."

And in the tradition of the Treaty of the Fathers of the Mishnah: "The presence of God rests upon them."

Another subtle way of saying that Jesus is the human presence of God among us.

Now I will say a few words about the letter to the Romans,

which is the second reading of this day (ch. 13).

" Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,"

and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, (namely) "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law."

Here again we have "Love your neighbor as yourself", which is also found in Leviticus 19:

right after verses that recommend fraternal correction.

"You shall not hate any of your kindred in your heart. Reprove your neighbor openly

so that you do not incur sin because of that person.

Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your own people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.

That is, correcting your brother or sister is to show your love.

We can conclude seeing in this text an invitation

to dare, to have the courage to correct the brother or sister.

But making sure that the motivation to correct him is love.

On the other hand, also being able to receive the brother's correction as a proof of love,

and also as an invitation to love him even more.

This is our way to accomplish the Law and allow the presence of God to rest among us.

Super Juniors vocal Kyuhyun loved to solve math problems ever since his school days. He received several trophies in different math competitions, such as the grand prize in the Korean Mathmatical Societys Olympiads.

Kyuhyun, rumored to be a math genius, was in the top 5 percentile of the math aptitude test scores and entered Kyunghee University to study postmodern music.

Idol-turned-actor Im Siwan entered the prestigious Busan University with a SAT score of 450. He continued to study even after debut, and once he was done filming Misaeng, he took TOEIC, which he received 820 points for.

He surprised people for getting good grades even amidst his busy schedule.
