Strong earthquake hits Iraq-Iran border area - Duration: 1:09.
A powerful earthquake hit the border between Iran and Iraq on Sunday, killing hundreds
and injuring thousands more.
Officials warn the death toll is almost certain to rise.
Kim Hyesung has the details.
The 7.3 magnitude earthquake rattled the Iraqi city of Halabja close to the Iraq-Iran border.
Across the border in Iran, state TV said at least 200 people were killed and nearly 17-hundred
injured when at least eight border villages were badly damaged.
Iraqi health officials said at least seven people were killed in Iraq, with more than
200 wounded.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicenter of Sunday's quake was about 30 kilometers
from the Iraqi city of Halabja, and tremors were felt as far away as Turkey, Israel and
Kuwait.
Power outages have been reported in the area and rescue teams have been dispatched.
Iranian officials warned that around 50 aftershocks were registered and more were expected.
Iraqi authorities are advising people to stay away from buildings and avoid using elevators,
in case of aftershocks.
