How to Paint a Horse (Sketch) in Oil - Narrated - Duration: 5:21.
Hello my friends and welcome to another Tuesday of tutorial!
I am Leonardo Pereznieto and today we will paint a small sketch
of a horse.
To begin, let´s tone the canvas.
I do this with burnt sienna with a lot of medium.
For medium right now I´m just using odorless mineral spirits.
I apply it like this rapidly and unevenly.
And now with a small brush, which has mineral spirits in it,
I take off some of the wet paint to sketch the horse.
I am pulling lights, so I´m taking the paint off
the areas of light.
And now with a Sepia Extra, that´s a dark brown,
I paint the darkest areas. So after this we will end up
with the top lights and the top shadows.
This is not meant to be a very in-detail painting,
I want it to be more like a sketch so that it looks nice and loose
not stiff… and let´s correct this leg which I made it way too long.
That´s better! The back legs and the flying tail.
With Titanium White I go over the areas of most light.
This is going to be a white horse however obviously, we will not paint
the whole animal white, because all the areas that are in shade
will be much darker.
I know here, we are going very fast! and I want to show you the overall
procedure. But I am uploading a long version of this tutorial,
very much more in detail, to my Patreon account.

And also in the information or the description of this video,
will be the exact list of materials that I am using.
I´m making the head a little bit bigger, both, wider and longer
because it was too small.
I think that looks better! and we give some light to the body.
You may erase with a rag if you put paint in the wrong
place like I just did.
Let´s darken and blur these areas a little bit more.
And I´m going to double check the proportions, by measuring
the head which in this pose
one head down should arrive right above the pectoralis
muscle where the tool lighter spots are on the chest,
and one more measure down
goes to the wrist of his right front leg.
Good!
Let´s paint the ground and then,
em... the dust that it´s been lifted by this powerful run [laughter].
I love horses! they have so much energy and personality.
And we will paint a light background too, because I want this to be
an elegant little painting and everything will be like on lighter colors.
Even though of course will have some shadows, like here. A good thing about oil paint
is that it is very friendly, in the sense that you can always do corrections.
We do the tail, blurred at the end,
and talking about corrections, I don´t like this brownish thing
on the ground, because I changed my mind a bit and now I want everything
on blueish tones, more or less.
I think that is looking more like it, much better.
Now let´s increase some of the lights
like the dust and here on the body,
and on the face.
All these areas that are facing up and that are catching more light.
Also some highlights on the tail.
All right!
I want even more dust on the lower part.
Like so.
I will shape this side a little bit smaller.
All right!
Since the whole painting is wet, I can keep easily modifying the colors
or the shapes.

I like it how it is looking!
I painted his mane, now I want to soften some of these
edges here on the back.
I think what is in front, like the front legs and the head
should be a little bit sharper. And what is farther away,
softer.
