0:03.0 Hi everyone, I'm Kim. I'm a Registered Dietitian welcome back to my channel!
and today I have a very special guest by the name of Rebecca!
So today's what we're going to be talking about is the Power of Food! So I have
some questions here that I'm going to ask Rebecca.
As a dietitian we study our Medical Nutrition Therapy and how food impacts
certain diseases so I work with my diabetes patients on
decreasing their carbohydrates, and increasing their fiber and ways to control
their blood sugar better; and renal patients that (are on a) really restrictive diet when it's for a disease state its
really important, it is important to restrict some food groups to make you healthier
and it is very cool to see the affects of the diabetic patient that increased their fiber
intake and exercised and then their blood sugars are better!
l feel like everyone can come together over meal. Everyone eats at least 3 times a day, it's a social thing
we don't, as humans we don't like to eat, most people don't like to eat by themselves
it's an activity which we do with people! Which I think is really cool.
Even at work I look forward to
my lunch with my co-workers. It's a break from the day
I think its really important that we do take the time to have social interaction over meals.
Over dinner should not be any stressful conversations because that can also lead to
some negative associations with food
if there is stressful conversations at the dinner table.
There's also so much research in that like families who have meals together kids do better
on their SAT's and that have higher IQ's. So the idea of a family meal and
getting together over...whatever, whatever meal: breakfast,
lunch, dinner um has really significant impacts on the kids
It definitely starts when you're young and
you grow up, but as you grow up I think it's really important to not have those food rules
as I was talking about before and really allow all foods. Like, there shouldn't be any kind of...
...(example) put a cupcake on a pedestal
because it's a "bad" food because if
you want a cupcake you should eat a cupcake and then it'll prevent you from
overeating on the cupcake which I think is really an important thing.
So food has a lot to do with nutrition. Everyone eats and everyone thinks about food.
I think I read somewhere once that people make a thousand food decisions everyday! That's crazy!
When I was in my dietetic internship I worked with kids who came from Honduras
and we did cooking classes, or like we cooked meals for them and we wanted to be more inclusive so we cooked
with them and at the time I didn't speak any Spanish
and they didn't speak any English, but we were still able to make a meal together.
**How do disorders eating patterns mentally impact people?
Yes, so I noticed this so much.
A disordered eating vs. an eating disorder is not a diagnosis.
It's peoples like kind of skewed idea of food or like people make up...make all these food rules
for themselves. I really believe in the idea that all foods fit into a healthy diet.
Having all these food rules for yourself
it makes eating out really difficult
and leads to a lot of social isolation and even negative health affects.
(For example) Cardiovascular issues, electrolyte abnormalities, again some really negative
health consequences when you start restricting... restricting a lot of food and food groups.
Alright so that was it that was me and Rebecca's conversation on "The Power of Food".
Remember to follow Rebecca (on instagram @onemealahead) thanks for watching! As usual remember to comment like and
