Youtube daily Nov 5 2017

The modern world works in video: from news reports to education, reaction gifs and just

laughing at people injuring themselves.

And all of that is really thanks to just one company.

That's why today we'll be going a little meta by looking at our mysterious overlord:

YouTube.

This video is brought to you by Squarespace.

Build beautiful websites easily and affordably by signing up with the link below.

Like the founders of several other big tech companies, the creators of YouTube met while

working at Paypal, back when Elon Musk was still calling the shots.

In October 2002, when eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen,

and Jawed Karim became instant millionaires.

This was especially important for the latter two, because they had both dropped out of

college just before graduating.

Chad Hurley was a designer, so he quit PayPal to work on a few projects like designing bags

and working on a feature film.

Jawed Karim actually finished his degree online, while Steve Chen stuck around at PayPal for

a few more years.

The three remained friends, however, and met up frequently to discuss ideas for their own

company.

The actual spark that inspired YouTube is a different story, depending on which founder

you talk too.

It was either because they couldn't send large videos, or because they couldn't find

footage of Janet Jackson's famous wardrobe malfunction.

Their first ideas for the platform though, were actually a bit different.

Like Mark Zuckerberg, they were big fans of a website called HotOrNot.com, where you could

rate people's appearance.

They imagined a site where members would put up a kind of dating profile video, talking

about who they were and the kind of person they were looking for.

But pretty soon they dropped the idea, in favor of a more universal platform.

The domain youtube.com was activated on 14th February, 2005 and just two months later Jawed

Karim uploaded the first ever YouTube video: him in the zoo.

By May 2005, the YouTube website was up and running, and appropriately featured videos

of Chen's cat.

Suffice to say, YouTube was a success from the very beginning.

Much like PayPal, it's beauty was in its simplicity.

In contrast with competing services, one of which was Google's, uploading a Youtube

video was free and you could upload as many as you wanted, as long as they weren't too

big.

But with no way to profit from their service, YouTube was burning money fast.

Luckily, the PayPal mafia was here to help, with former CFO Roelof Botha investing $3.5

million in seed funding, around September 2005.

This investment was vital as the site needed time to grow and to establish itself before

monetizing.

By November 2005 YouTube was hands-down the biggest video platform, serving 2 million

videos per day.

Server costs were becoming so massive that YouTube ran out of money less than six months

later, causing Sequoia Capital to injected another $8 million.

At the time, YouTube's biggest problem was licensing, but movie studios and record labels,

quickly saw the benefit from short clips being shared among users, as the first viral videos

began to appear.

By October 2006 it was clear that YouTube was the winner in the video platform race,

but Google wasn't ready to give up just yet.

Instead, they put down 3% of the entire company's value on the table, which persuaded Hurley,

Chen and Karim to sell YouTube.

Outsiders thought that Google had paid way too much, spending over $1.5 billion for a

website that hadn't made a single dime.

But Google was confident it had made the right decision, and the synergies between the two

companies were truly exceptional.

Google's army of lawyers quickly settled the majority of YouTube's legal troubles

and even resulted in profitable deals being signed with the likes of Sony, Lionsgate,

and MGM.

With Google capital, YouTube also developed an automated copyright system, Content ID,

which could reliably detect copyrighted content as soon as a new video was uploaded.

By utilizing Google's vast server farms, YouTube could also reduce their hosting costs,

which were already approaching $2 million per day.

But the ultimate benefit, was the integration between YouTube's video platform and Google's

advertising arm, AdSense.

One of the reasons behind Google's success as an advertising platform was its access

to immense amounts of information, which YouTube could provide in spades.

YouTube's main problem, on the other hand, was a lack of monetization, which AdSense

easily solved.

By showing ads next to videos, YouTube finally started generating revenue, but despite that

it has never made a profit.

By 2009 YouTube was showing 5 billion videos every month, earning way less from ads than

they spent on hosting.

As a consequence, that year YouTube lost $470 million dollars.

But that didn't really matter, because YouTube's true value for Google is the information it

has about its users: what you watch, what you like, what you comment.

In a way, YouTube is profitable, it's just that a big chunk of its value isn't easy

to determine.

Of course, the ultimate goal for YouTube is to replace television, and to do that YouTube

needed to be more than just an archive of TV clips and cat videos.

It was in their interest to promote original content and to that end in 2011, they partnered

with numerous celebrities and production companies to create unique, high-quality content.

After a $300 million investment, in March 2013 YouTube was ready for the next step in

its master plan: moving towards a subscription model.

The first iteration was called Music Key, which allowed you to stream music without

ads for a monthly fee.

In October 2015 it was incorporated into YouTube Red, which removed ads across the whole platform

and gave access to exclusive content.

The adoption rate for YouTube Red isn't particularly spectacular.

By the end of 2016, it had only 1.5 million subscribers.

And it does make sense: in the age of Adblock it's hard to get people to pay for something

they've been getting free for years.

Speaking of Adblock, it would only be fair to discuss the recent trouble YouTube has

had with its advertisers, better known as the Adpocalypse.

In short, the Wall Street Journal ran an article about how ads were being shown next extremist

content, particularly attacking the biggest YouTuber out there, PewDiePie.

Big advertisers got worried this could become a public relations crisis, so they stopped

spending money on YouTube.

Of course, YouTube need those advertisers to keep the platform running, so they introduced

options for what kind of videos brands don't want their ads to be shown on.

These categories include "tragedy and conflict" and "sensitive social issues", both of

which are pretty open to interpretation.

This resulted in many videos which should've been ok getting demonetized, so no ads running

on them.

YouTube were, of course, fine with that, since it meant bringing back advertisers at the

expense of a few channels losing their revenues.

Unsurprisingly, that's exactly what happened.

Many YouTubers got their livelihoods destroyed, while the YouTube advertising platform returned

to record profitability.

In fact, YouTube's exclusive ad platform for high-spending advertisers is already sitting

at a record number of participants, way more than even before the Adpocalypse.

What this fiasco really showed, however, is that YouTube is beholden advertisers.

Ultimately, it is the big brands that are the customers, while both content creators

and viewers are merely users of the platform whose priorities are of lesser importance.

The good news is that YouTube channels don't have to rely on AdSense revenue alone.

Here at Business Casual, for example, I rely much more heavily on Patreon and sponsorships.

In fact, without these two pillars of support, Business Casual just wouldn't exist.

But luckily I've got the support of both dedicated viewers like you and of awesome

English pronunciation: 'i' /ɪ/ or 'ee' /i:/ sound (example: 'bitch' or 'beach') - Duration: 3:46.

Hello, everyone; I'm Chris, your teacher on Learn British English Free. This is a

special pronunciation lesson. I'm going to help you understand the difference in

two common sounds in English which people learning the language often get

mixed up which can cause some awkward problems sometimes. So let's practice

hard to get this right. It's the difference between two sounds which

sound quite similar but are actually different and we need to make it clear

when we speak. The first sound is a short vowel sound.

this is an important thing - short /ɪ/ have a look /ɪ/ /ɪ/ The second sound, which we need to

make very different, is long - short versus long - think about that and have a look at

my mouth is wider /i:/ /i:/ /i:/ Let's compare the two sounds short and long /ɪ/ /i:/ can

you do it /ɪ/ /i:/ Now some examples. We call these

minimal pairs: similar words which have these two different sounds in. The short

one is first ship long sheep ship sheep

this these this these bin been bin been. And last, one of these

examples can be rude - the first word - in some contexts; that's why it's so

important to be able to pronounce the two sounds differently: bitch

beach bitch beach - to explain, 'bitch' means a female dog, but it can also be used as

a rude word to insult women so that's why you should not pronounce it that way,

especially if you are talking about going on holiday to a lovely place,

relaxing on the beach make sure that you pronounce 'beach' with the long vowel

sound - that's very important. I hope this helped the difference in pronunciation

between /ɪ/ and /i:/; short and long. Easy, but so vital for pronouncing English

properly. Thank you for watching. Please subscribe on Learn British English Free

on YouTube and you can join us on Facebook, on the website www.learnbritishenglish.co.uk

All the links to all the websites are available in the description on the

YouTube page along with the notes and the text for this video. I will see you

next time. Goodbye.

Home Invader Makes Last Mistake Of His Life After Breaking Into Elderly Woman's Home - Duration: 1:58.

Marion, AR – A senior citizen in Arkansas decided to stand her ground when a 19-year-old

man broke into her home in the middle of the night on Sunday.

An elderly woman in Marion woke up to her burglar alarm going off, and found an intruder

in her home, the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office said.

Cody Smith, 19, set off the alarm as he forcibly entered the octogenarian's home, police

said.

The victim told police that she told the intruder to leave, but instead, Smith moved toward

her in a threatening manner.

So she shot him in self-defense.

Smith was dead at the scene when police arrived.

Police confirmed that on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 3:31 a.m., the ADT alarm company received

a report of a burglar alarm at the woman's house.

ADT personnel alerted local law enforcement to a problem after they spoke with the homeowner,

who lived alone, and was in her 80's.

The elderly homeowner told police that she was awakened by her burglar alarm, and that

she'd she defended herself by shooting the intruder.

Some of Smith's friends told Fox 13 that he had been at a Halloween party before the

incident, and that he "appeared to be intoxicated when he left Sunday morning."

The victim's neighbors speculated about what the man had been up to when he broke

into the woman's house, and expressed concern about their security.

"We heard he was under the influence of something and wrecked his car," neighbor

John Rimmer said.

"At first it was told that he thought he was walking to his house.

I didn't know where his house is.

In this neighborhood, I assume," Rimmer said.

Other neighbors reported having seen a man entering the residence.

No other details about the incident have been released.

No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.

Police reveal what could be a possible motive in the Las Vegas shooting - Duration: 1:55.

According to Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, Stephen Paddock — the man responsible for

the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. — was a "status-driven," high-rolling gambler

who had been steadily losing money for two years.

In a wide-ranging interview with KLAS-TV in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Lombardo revealed

that Paddock may have seen his image declining.

What does this have to do with a motive?

"He was going through some bouts of depression.

But he was status-driven," Lombardo told KLAS in the interview, which was given in

an attempt to clarify the murkiness surrounding the October shooting.

"Since September 2015, he's lost a significant amount of wealth, and I think that might have

been a determining factor on what he was determined to do," Lombardo added.

Lombardo added that Paddock was "status-driven," and "liked to be recognized in the casino

environment," as well as by his friends and family.

"Obviously that was starting to decline in the short period of time and that may have

had a determining effect on why decided to do what he did," the sheriff reasoned.

"He was going in the wrong direction."

Lombardo said that investigators still aren't sure what set off Paddock when he began stockpiling

weapons and ammunition and began what appeared to be scouting endeavors, seeking out different

venue locations around the country.

Lombardo said that while he believed that Paddock's decline in casino presence and

financial status may have been a factor in the shooting, authorities are still investigating

as to whether there was a particular incident that triggered the October event.

"Obviously he took a long time to think this out," Lombardo added.

The sheriff also confirmed that Paddock's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, is still considered

a "person of interest."

Tucker Carlson Just Exposed The Truth About CNN's Jim Acosta To His Boss, It's Epic - Duration: 1:42.

Tucker Carlson just exposed the truth of Jim Acosta to the head of CNN Jeff Zucker.

Carlson started with an interview of Jeff Zucker claiming that CNN is fair and balanced.

Carlson than showed exactly how unfair and unbalanced Acosta really is.

"Quote, he said, 'I think our air as supposed to others is truly fair and balanced.'

Jeff Zucker said that apparently without snickering.

Which raises the question, how much CNN does Jeff Zucker actually watch?

Has he seen Jim Acosta lately?

Acosta is CNN's senior White House correspondent.

That is a title that suggests journalism rather than uninformed commentary.

And yet, here is Acosta from just two days ago, unloading what he is clearly a pre-rehearsed

editorial on CNN's air.," said Tucker.

Tucker showed a clip where Acosta said the following: "I think President Trump now

has the world record for injecting politics into the aftermath of a terror attack.

That is exactly what has happened in the last 12 hours or so as the President has been tweeting

about this."

"This president won a world record for injecting politics?

According to Jim Acosta, reporter, that is, quote, 'Exactly what happened.; Can we get

some documentation for that claim?

A certificate from the Guinness book, maybe?" said Carlson.

"Did CNN's most visible hard journalist just accidentally slip into third-rate punditry?

It looks that way.

And it probably wasn't by accident, actually as a veteran Acosta watcher, we have noticed

a theme here," said Carlson.

How to Make Ringtone in iPhone without iTunes! - Duration: 3:55.

How to make Ringtone in iPhone without iTunes!

Hello Friends!

Welcome back AppleFrendly.

Video #60

The GarageBand has been updated recently and so as the ringtone making method.

Today I'm going to show you this updated method using Garageband.

If you like the video, give it a big thumbs up and share it with your friends and loved ones.

So, without further ado, let's get started!

Firstly, launch the App Store on your iPhone

and download this free app 'GarageBand'

Made by Apple itself.

Checkout the download links in the description below.

Let's open the app.

You should see Files App layout inside the GarageBand.

Just go and hit the plus sign on the top right hand corner.

Now select 'Audio Recorder'

Now tap these 3 broken lines.

A new layout will open up.

Just go to the top right hand corner and tap this little + sign.

Tap 'Section A'

and make this number '30'

Basically, these are the 30 seconds of your ringtone.

If the number is more than 30, you won't be able to set a ringtone.

So, when you're done, tap outside anywhere to close the menu.

Now tap Circular Loop icon on the top right corner.

Select 'Music'

And under 'Songs' category, select your favorite song for making a ringtone.

Please understand that you need to have a Music synced from iTunes.

If you've bought it from Apple Music, you won't be able to set it as a ringtone.

Apple doesn't allow that.

So, when you've selected the song, hold and drag it over this empty area.

Now tap to select the song

and use the handles to edit the selected song.

Tap again, to reveal few more editing options.

Using these tools, you can make your ringtone unique.

So when you're done editing the song, tap this 'Inverted Triangle' button

and select 'My Songs'

Now you should be back to your Files app layout.

i.e. The home screen for your GarageBand.

And here is our new ringtone file that we've just created.

Now tap 'Select' button on the top right corner

and select your new ringtone file

and hit the Share Sheet button located at the bottom section.

Now select 'Ringtone' here.

Now tap and rename your ringtone.

And hit 'Export' button.

Now select 'Use sound as...'

and then select 'Standard Ringtone'

That's all!

We've successfully made a new ringtone for iPhone.

Now when you launch 'Settings' on your iPhone

and go to 'Sounds'

'Ringtone'

you should find your New Ringtone.

So, that's how easy it is to make Ringtone in iPhone without iTunes or using GarageBand.

Hope you guys liked it.

That's all for this video.

8.1 Oreo Status Bar on Any Android (No Root) | Review of Material Notification Shade - Duration: 3:04.

Hi Guys.

I'm Arafat and today we will be taking a look at how to get Android 8.1 updated Oreo

Notification Bar on an android device.

And of course you don't need root permission for this.

Since it is a simple rootless app, it will work on pretty much every android device from

5.0 lollipop.

Besides showing you how to get the exact same Notification Bar with slight transparency

like the 8.1 Oreo update, I will also be showing you with some other cool customization options.

So watch till the end and let's get started.

I am using android 6.0 marshmallow on my device with the default notification panel.

Now to change the notification panel to Oreo style, go to the play store.

Search for Material Notification Shade.

Now you will need to install it on your device.

Since I already have it installed I will simply open from here.

Now look it is turned off.

To turn it on, touch here, and provide all the permissions it require.

After providing permission to all of them, touch on Done.

Now pull your notification panel and see a completely new Oreo look.

By default, you will see this notification here and to remove that,

change Notification Theme to System Default.

And that has gone.

Then we need to make the notification bar semi-transparent like the 8.1 version of Oreo.

For doing that, scroll down and select Enable Transparency.

Now if we pull the notification bar we will get a slightly transparent look.

It is hard to see right now because everything in the background is white

like the notification panel.

But if we go to some other background, you will see the background through

the notification panel like the time below it.

It will even give you the exact same Oreo notification style.

For example if I play a song, its notification color will change according to the album art

color of that song.

Which looks really great.

You will even get the option to snooze any notification for a certain amount of time.

Now we already have got a complete Oreo looking notification bar.

But there are some other cool features in this app worth checking.

So let's check them out.

You can change your notification style from Panel Theme section to Nougat, EX, or keep Oreo.

Then you can change the background color of the notification bar.

Select Shade Background Color and choose any color you want and select.

Now see its color have been changed.

If you want to have a dark mode of notification panel, you can do that too.

Just change the Background Color to black, and Foreground Color to white.

And now you have a dark notification panel.

As an extra functionality you can keep the brightness slider at the bottom of notification panel.

Select this brightness slider at the bottom and see the difference.

I really like the brightness slider at the bottom since it is more convenient to slide

here rather than sliding on the top.

You can do some other staff with it like, changing the tiles locations.

Touch on this edit option, then hold and drag any tiles to change its location.

Then go back to see the change.

You can even change the number of column or row in the notification panel if you are willing

to use its pro version.

Though it does well in almost everything.

It has some minor issues like it doesn't actually turn on Mobile Data and location

services from the notification panel instead it takes to the settings for that option.

But apart from that, all the other things work as expected.

That's it for the video.

I will upload another video on how to get the 8.1 Oreo looking Launcher for your android device.

You can check the description to get the link for that one.

I hope you liked it and if you did give a thumbs up and leave your comments below.

Antifa Rallies Planned in at Least 20 U.S. Cities — Won't 'Stop Until This Regime Driven from Power' - Duration: 4:13.

The left-wing, Antifa Refuse Fascism group is planning rallies in at least 20 cities

across the United States on Saturday to demand that the duly-elected President Donald Trump

and Vice President Mike Pence be "driven from power."

In a full-page ad in the New York Times on Wednesday, the group advertised its event:

Nov 4 it begins — be there — join with the thousands who will gather in cities and

towns across the country.

A movement of protests that continue every day and night, growing until we become millions

… determined not to stop until this is driven from power.

Newsweek reported on Thursday:

"Refuse fascism," a nascent protest group with ties to a more explicitly left-wing radical

group, "the revolutionary communist party," doesn't seem like a typical fit for the

left-leaning pages of the paper known as The Gray Lady, but very little has been normal

about the Trump era so far, according to organizers.

The regime is destroying the planet by ignoring climate change, they say, and they claim it

is turning America into a fascist country through an unprecedented series of executive

orders.

"What Trump and his administration are doing could pose an existential threat to humanity,"

Andy Zee, a member of the advisory board for Refuse Fascism, told Newsweek in a phone interview.

"We're in one of the most perilous moments in history right now," Zee said.

The Refuse Fascism website states:

No!

In the name of humanity we refuse to accept a fascist America!

Take to the streets and public squares in cities and towns across the country continuing

day after day and night after night — not stopping until our DEMAND is met: This Nightmare

Must End: The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!

A list follows naming what those nightmares are, including discrimination against Muslims

and gays, objectivism and harassment of women, and the danger posed by climate change.

The "about" portion of the Refuse Fascism states:

We launched RefuseFascism.org at an emergency meeting at the Great Hall of Cooper Union

in NYC on December 19th, 2016.

Watched by some 200,000 people on HuffPo's FaceBookLive, Andy Zee, PZ Myers, Carl Dix,

Jeremy Scahill, Imam Ayub Abdul-Baki, Rev. Doris Johnson, Sunsara Taylor, Immortal Technique,

and Fran Luck spoke along with messages from Gloria Steinem, Chase Iron Eyes, Isabel Cardenas,

and others on the fascist character of the Trump/Pence Regime and called on people to

get organized to stop it before it came to power.

But some are saying that the reaction to the planned rallies is overplayed and is being

characterized by some conservative websites as the start of a civil war.

The Washington Post reported:

Infowars has warned "Antifa Plans 'Civil War' to Overthrow the Government."

The John Birch Society put out two recent videos warning Americans to "stay home and

tell your children to do likewise" on Saturday.

YouTuber "A Glock Fanboy" notched more than 400,400 views for a clip raising the

alarm about "the first day of the revolution or whatnot."

Time magazine flatly said the claims of an insurrection are: "simply not true."

There will indeed be anti-Trump rallies in 20 cities around the U.S. on Saturday, from

Atlanta to Honolulu, organized by a left-wing political action group called Refuse Fascism

whose goal is unseating Trump.

But its tactics — including but not limited to a "passionate speak-out with music and

participatory art" — are a far cry from violent insurrection.

Nor is it likely that the streets will be teeming with angry mobs: only 990 people have

said that they're attending the demonstration in New York, according to the event's Facebook

group.

Among the at least 20 cities where rallies are set to occur are Atlanta, Austin, Boston,

Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia,

San Francisco, and Seattle.
