this is Nessa on ESL TOPTEN I got a quick question for you
why are you learning English what motivates you what is your why if your
reason is connected to your job or maybe your goal to get a job then this video
lesson might be for you I'm not going to be talking so much about the English
language or vocabulary instead I am going to give you 10 tips on how to have
a successful job interview
in this video I'm gonna give you ten tips on how to have a successful
interview now they're aligned from number one to number ten in terms of
chronological order meaning the first few tips are about what you can do
before the interview then a few are about during the interview and the last
tip is about what to do after the interview and I just want to mention
something there is a freebie for you attached to this lesson just click the
links below the freebie will help you prepare for your interview I'll explain
a bit later so tip number one before your job interview spend the time doing
research so there's a few basic questions you have to have the answers
to here's a couple of them number one who is the company's market meaning who
are they selling a product to or providing a service to make sure you
know their target audience what is their mission statement all you have to do is
do a quick google search mission statement comma whatever the company's
name is so if I wanted to work at Google I could type in mission statement cago
comma although Google and see what their
mission statement is and of course you probably want to know who's the CEO or
who's the president or who's on the board of directors
number two practice practice practice practice practice makes perfect so how
do you practice for a job interview well here's what you can do make a list of
possible questions you might be asked in your interview take the time to do this
so once you have your list of possible questions now you have to practice
answering them now I don't mean memorize word per word a script you don't you're
not a robot right and you don't want to seem like a robot during the interview
but practice answering each question aloud and each time answer it a little
bit differently but have the main idea be the same so for example if they ask
you what qualities would make you good for this job you want to have the main
ideas prepared beforehand you don't want to be like when they ask
you that question um well I'm a good swimmer if you want to work at Google
right you want to be prepared so related to that today's freebie for you is a
list of 50 possible questions you might be asked in an interview now you can
modify those questions based on your field but these questions will help you
so download that and includes a short glossary of terms that you might want to
use in your answers so make sure you get that it's going to help you okay
moving on number three bring a copy of your resume to the interview I know it
seems a little bit silly because they probably already have it but what if
they don't what if they ask you for your resume you want to be prepared and
better still or just as important make sure you review your own resume before
the interview I know that sounds a little silly but listen if they ask me
in an interview when did you work for em it was so long ago that I might not
remember the years so I don't want to come across as ignorant of my own work
experience so make sure you know what's on your resume and have a clear idea of
the dates and your particular duties in those jobs especially if you're no
spring chicken. number four get into the right mindset so attitude that's the
first thing they're gonna take note of right how you come across so you can
prepare yourself by doing a few simple things number one do not discount the
power of visualizing every great athlete out there has said that before the big
game or the big race whatever it is they visualize themselves they have a mental
picture of themselves exceeding limits right so you can do that so close your
eyes and imagine you in the interview being confident smiling you know feeling
really at ease comfortable and also visualize the
interviewer just being super impressed by you whatever is in reality is usually
planned or pictured beforehand so you have a lot of power there and I also
recommend you watch this TED talk video by Amy Cuddy which is all about the
power of body language and how you can do a few simple exercises to give
yourself more confidence using your body for example using power poses so often
before even these videos that I do and put up on YouTube I feel a little bit
nervous so often rate before I start filming I do one or two powerful poses
now I'm not gonna okay should I demonstrate no I okay so for example
right before a video I might put my arms up really high take a deep breath and
get myself into the right mindset open up your body
right into a few stretches anyways check out the video the link is in the notes
below number five arrive early okay this is a no-brainer you don't want to be
late for your own interview but more importantly don't give yourself a
bracket of five minutes earlier arrive half an hour earlier so you're not
stressed you know you're not on the bus looking at your watch or your your phone
going "oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, it's in ten minutes." So give yourself a good bracket and
arrive early and another thing is if you arrive early and you want a cup of
coffee have that cup of coffee or that bottle of water before the interview
don't go in the interview with a cup of coffee or a bottle of water because it
might just provide you with a distraction because you're nervous you
might start like fidgeting with the cup of coffee and they'll notice that you're
not paying 100% attention and then you look less confident so you kind of want
to just go in with yourself your bag and your resume no distractions
number six related to this make a great first impression so as soon as you walk
in even before you've met the interviewer make sure that you're
standing straight you're smiling in the waiting room before the interview make
sure you're not just on your phone just put your phone away stay
in the moment and if you're not used to shaking hands
practice your handshake because if they go to shake your hand you want to be
prepared for that don't make it too light, and like, you know,
like a dead fish but don't you know break someone's hand okay
number seven related also so be super aware of your body language it is
amazing what a smile can do to disarm someone so on first day for me when I'm
a teacher and I have new students I really appreciate those students who
smile at me and who make eye contact it really does make a good first impression
so you make sure you do the same during your interview number eight okay so this
is related not just to your interview but also your cover letter
don't focus on negatives one of the things that I do here in Maine Coover is
I teach students how to write a cover letter and I'm always amazed by how many
students write a sentence or two about things they're not good at or things
that they don't have experience with don't do that
focus on your strengths so for example don't include a sentence in your cover
letter or don't mention in your interview I'm not good at English you
know or if you're getting a job in a kindergarten school don't say but I've
never worked with kids you know so only focus on positives and another side note
please don't mention or write in your cover letter that you're punctual
there's many qualities that people are looking for in workers and employees but
being punctual is not really a positive it's taken here as a given so don't even
mention that okay and don't forget the freebie will include a list of
adjectives and vocabulary that you might find useful to use to describe yourself
in your cover letter and in your interview and punctual is not on the
list okay here we go we're down to number nine okay yes
number nine well this is related so don't focus on negatives so number nine
is the opposite focus on your unique combination
of work experience and personality traits that make you the perfect
candidate for this job do not discount the wonderful combination of things that
make you you so before the interview make sure you spend the time distilling
the heart of you what makes you awesome what would make you so fantastic in this
job and try to keep it relevant so if you're applying for a job in in a plant
nursery so working with plants growing plants and flowers don't say again that
you're great at swimming it's not really related or don't talk about the time you
worked at Starbucks unless it's somehow related to maybe providing excellent
customer service so make sure you can connect it one way or another or don't
mention it and the last thing number 10 super simple but highly effective when
the interview is coming to an end don't forget to thank the interviewer or
interviewers and even better once you've thanked them and you've left follow-up
the next day or maybe two days later with a short email thanking them for
their time and you know thanking them for their time and thanking them for
considering you as a candidate so thank you everyone loves a thank you so those
are my 10 tips on how to have a successful job interview and I have one
last thing not every job interview ends up with a win meaning you don't always
get the job but just remember every time you take that step of going to the job
interview you're getting better and you are getting closer to get your
job this is Nessa just to remind you to get your free PDF that has a list of
common questions that people ask during interviews so that you can get your
practice in and I'm including a glossary of adjectives and other terms that might
be useful to describe yourself this is Nessa on ESL TOP TEN thanks for
