The caipirinha is known around the world.
And many bars in New York serve their own version.
Around here, it's considered a sophisticated, authentic drink
– not for the lime, we've got limes.
Not for the sugar, we've got sugar – too much, in fact.
It's for the cachaça,
a uniquely Brazilian liquor with a distinct flavor that the culinary site Epicurious called:
At the same time, the liquor most often substituted by Brazilians is considered unsophisticated
and taste-free by many cocktail enthusiasts.
The idea of substituting something non-Brazilian for cachaça
in the most Brazilian drink seems crazy outside of Brazil.

Summer is blueberry season here in New York.
And how do you say "blueberries" in Portuguese?
It's "mirtilo americano."
You have to add "americano" because "mirtilo" alone is a European fruit that is similar, but not the same.
Huh, but this is not Fruit Class, it's New Yorkese Class,
and the most important part of making caipirinhas or cocktails with cachaça is to "amassar" the fruits.
How do you say that in English?
The dictionary says "mash" or "knead."
That's true, but "mashing" is only for potatoes and knead is for dough, for bread.
