This past weekend, ice agents went to the tiny town of Sanford, North Carolina and carried

out a massive immigration raid.

They were looking for undocumented immigrants who are in this country illegally and they

found quite a few, you know, dozens upon dozens in this raid, but it's not just that the raid

took place.

That's disgusting.

We have seen more and more of these raids popping up over the last year.

What's disgusting is the little press conference thing that the ice officials gave after this

raid took place where they told us that this is the new normal.

This is what they're starting to do.

More and more, invade these small towns all over the United States

to carry out these raids and try to find as many illegal immigrants as possible so that

they can deport them.

The new normal is what they told us this is going to be, and part of the reason they said

is because they're not getting any cooperation from local law enforcement.

You know, cops aren't going through and seeing if the person they arrest is an undocumented

immigrant and then turning them over to ice, which forces ice according to them to have

to come in there and carry out these raids and take care of all the illegals because

police just aren't helping them out was it turns out there's a good reason police aren't

actually working with them because it's been proven in city after city across this country

that when law enforcement officials in a city start to cooperate with ice, undocumented

immigrants are far less likely to come forward and one act as a cooperating witness if they've

seen crimes or to report crimes that happen against them.

And three, that results in increased crime against undocumented immigrants.

Those are facts and law enforcement officials and even if their right wing law enforcement

officials, they understand that.

And so that is why a lot of them choose to not sign into these programs to work alongside

ice within their cities.

It actually makes the crime rates go up, but ice doesn't care.

Ice has one goal.

Get as many brown people out of the United States as possible, as quickly as possible.

Hell, that could be their slogan at this point.

And this is the new normal according to them.

I mean, honestly, we're at the point of papers.

Please.

We are repeating other countries' histories here on our own soil in the United States.

Yeah.

I don't want to sound like one of those people like, well, this is how it starts.

But seriously, this is how it starts.

Folks.

Go back and read your history.

Go back and find out what was happening in Germany.

You know, the raids.

Trying to find out who was what, what nationality are you?

Oh, you're the one we don't like.

You're coming with us and we're doing the same thing in the United States today.

And according to ice, his own words, this is our new normal here in the United States.

Widows Disability Benefits - Duration: 5:42.

Good afternoon, and welcome to our broadcast today.

My name is Cindy Speaker.

I have with me as my guest attorney Winslow Butts, a Social Security Disability attorney

with Gardberg & Kemmerly.

Winslow, thanks for being with us.

Thank you for having me.

It's good to be here.

Well, I'm looking forward to talking to you.

You handle Social Security.

I know you help a lot of people that have disability, they're trying to get benefits,

and today we're going to talk about a specific aspect of that, the Widow's Disability Benefits.

What is a Disabled Widow's Benefit?

A Widow's Disability Benefit is usually for people that, if they have not worked, but

they've had a spouse that has recently passed away, they can draw off of their spouse's

work record as opposed to their work record.

It's good especially if a spouse was making more than the person that is disabled, they

are able to draw off of that spouse's earnings record.

Okay ... yeah.

Go ahead.

I was going to say that in order to have a Widow's Disability claim, the widow has to

be at least 50, but not yet 60.

The spouse has to pass away within the last seven years.

The spouse has to have worked, and has to have paid into Social Security.

They also ... their earnings record can't be higher than the deceased spouse's record.

Whichever ... the deceased spouse has to have made more than the disabled person.

They also have to be disabled, is the main thing.

Okay.

Is this common knowledge?

I suspect it's not.

That these benefits are available.

It's not.

A lot of people know about Survivor's Benefits, where if you've turned 60 you can draw for

your deceased spouse, but a lot of people do not know that if you are between the ages

of 50 and 60 and you are disabled, then you can draw off of your deceased spouse, as well,

as long as the spouse has died within the last seven years.

Okay.

No, that's really good to know.

Now let me ask you this: if the survivor is over 60, any recourse?

No.

Not ... They could get the Survivor's Benefits, which ... The one thing that's good about

that is that if you are over 60, you don't have to prove that you have a disability.

You only have to prove that you were married to the deceased worker, and that you were

married within the last nine months.

You have to be married for at least nine months.

Okay.

Okay.

Can they collect both the disability benefit and the benefit of the deceased spouse at

the same time?

No, they cannot collect both theirs and the deceased spouse.

It's whichever one is higher.

So if the deceased spouse is higher, you would collect that one.

If yours is higher, you would collect yours.

Okay.

Let me ask you this: how often do you have this benefit ... do people come with you and

say, "I want to know about this benefit," or how is it that you're able to get the word

out to individuals that they may be eligible for this benefit?

How do you get that word out?

Yeah, a lot of people come to us, and they're just trying to get their disability benefits

based off their own earnings record, so we let them know that if they have recently had

a spouse that's died, they should try and apply with Social Security to see if they

do have a Disabled Widow's claim.

That way, they could potentially have a higher benefit, just depending on how much the spouse

was making.

Right.

Well, and- Which is a good alternative.

It is a good alternative, and it's another reason why, if you're watching this today

... You know somebody, share this to their page, if you would, because what I've found

a lot in interviewing attorneys, a lot of times there's benefits out there that exist,

but the average person is not aware of them.

I know many of the things that you guys introduce me to, I'm not aware of these benefits, so

I don't think they're common knowledge.

It's important to try and get more awareness out for some of these benefits.

The other thing I always like to say is, with Social Security Disability, and these types

of disability benefits, I think there's a certain stigma sometimes attached to them.

There's no need for anybody to feel bad about applying for these benefits.

This is almost like an insurance policy that you or your spouse paid into all their lives.

Can you comment on that at all?

Exactly.

A lot of people, they don't want to because of the stigma, but we like to think that it's

money that you have paid into Social Security, or your spouse has paid in, so it's money

that's owed to you if you meet Social Security's qualifications.

I would encourage people, if they think they qualify for a benefit, to contact us and ask

us if there is an additional benefit that they're not getting that they could potentially

be receiving.

for a real estate agent to help you buy a home

that they're experienced, they're full-time,

they're knowledgeable about the area

that you're looking in, that's very important;

and so, that they can represent your interests

and help you get from point A to point B

and get closed on your home,

be able to move in whenever you need to move in.

Now, on selling a home, it's even more important

that you work with an agent who is very experienced,

knowledgeable about the area, so that they can

guide you in pricing your home properly,

and they also have a very robust marketing program.

Real estate is more about marketing today

than it is a lot of things, it's changed a lot.

So, we're in a digital, very sophisticated marketing world,

and the real estate agent that you hire to help you

sell your home needs to be up to speed on all of that.

So, we really recommend that everyone

be represented as a buyer, it doesn't cost you anything

on the selling side.

You'll more than reap the reward with the price of the sale

of your home if you work with a good real estate agent.

On this dog friendly adventure

I take Luna for a short hike instead of our evening walk

When we arrived

We had about an hour of daylight left

So it was great timing to finish the hike on top of the nearby water tower for some great sunset views

From the carpark

We follow the trail down into the valley to start our hike

The plan was complete a full circuit around the reserve

And finish back at the car park where the local water tower was located

Rob: "So Water Tower Circuit"

All the trails are well paved and easy to follow

It was also very shady the whole way

I usually take Luna around the block for a quick walk in the evenings

But this was a lot more interesting than our usual walk

I let Luna off lead for a little bit as there weren't any other people around

Once we came upon the main area

I put her back on lead

Rob: "Luna!"

Rob: "Stay"

She's a good girl

We made our way through this creek crossing which was completely dry at the time

This marked the halfway point of our little hike

Luna was a little puffed but seemed like a pretty happy pup

On an adventure with her favorite person

We checked out this triassic themed shelter

It had info on local and indigenous history

Afterwards

We pressed on towards the Quarry Pond

Rob: "Go, keep going"

It's been a dry summer

So the water seemed a little bit low

Rob: "It's okay"

Rob: "Not the best i've seen"

We continued on the circuit which took us up and around the quarry

When we got to the lookout above the Quarry Pond

We took a quick break to cool off

We then made our way down the Quarry and continued on the trail back to the carpark

Luna was feeling energetic after the break and was pulling ahead on the lead

She pulled me up these last set of stairs too

Having completed the circuit

We had another quick break and had a drink before climbing more stairs to reach the top of the water tower

Rob: "Keep going"

Rob: "One more"

Rob: "One more set"

Rob: "Oh wow"

Rob: "It's nice up here"

It was a nice and easy midweek adventure with Luna
