In recent weeks the Department of Immigration has stepped up their deportations and they're
basically detaining of people in the United States who are either here on visas that have
come into this country illegally and in some cases people who are in this country legally.
Donald Trump at the same time has stepped up his anti-immigrant rhetoric, keeps doubling
down on a border wall that he promises Mexico's going to reimburse us for the cost.
I guess as long as we save the receipt we can turn that into them at the end year maybe.
But the real issue here, one that Americans are not considering, is actually being raised
by American farmers.
They have brought up, and they're trying to make their voices heard, that if we continue
on this path there is going to be a horrible food shortage in the United States and a dramatic
increase in the price of food for United States citizens, all because we want to kick out
the immigrants.
This news story from the Associated Press really lays out the issue that these farmers
are trying to raise.
It is basically that there are some jobs, believe it or not, I know it's hard, that
American workers do not want.
Either because they don't like it or because they're physically unable to do the work
associated with farming, which is the case in a lot of these instances.
That's why farmers depend on these people coming over here.
The migrant workers, the H1B visa workers; they need their help during the season to
pick the crops to get them to market and to make sure everything keeps functioning.
You know one report that came out last week said that if we follow through with Donald
Trump's immigration policy the lack of workers for American farms is going to drive the price
of milk up to more than $8 a gallon.
For milk.
That's just one good.
We have grapes that are going to start rotting on the vine according to these farmers because
we don't have the workers available to go pick them.
That's going to drive your wine prices up folks.
Not going to have that anymore.
Apples are in danger of rotting on trees right now because there are not enough people to
go pick these.
So when you talk about the price of one good increasing, you know a bag of apples may rise
by 2 or $3, so does any other product that contains apples as part of their recipe or
part of their ingredients.
Everything rises when the price of our farmed goods goes up, and that's what we're looking
at in the United States, but that's something that Donald Trump and his fellow anti-immigrant
Republicans are telling us.
They're not talking about the other side of the immigration equation, which is why
we need these people here.
They're only talking about the very rare instances where somebody comes into the United
States from Mexico and kills somebody, and because of the action of one or two people
every now and then we need to construct this border wall, kick them all out, and to hell
with the consequences for American consumers.
We're the ones who are going to pay for this, and not just in terms of funding the
stupid border wall.
How are you going to feel when you go to the store to buy a gallon of milk for your children
and it's now $9?
Or when you try to pack them a healthy lunch of apples and it's $10 a bag?
But the reality is that's what we're looking at.
That's not even where we could head.
That's where we're currently heading.
Okay.
This isn't a far-off thing.
We're on that path already.
We have to reverse course to correct things at this point, because Donald Trump and his
immigrant hating policies are going to hurt every single person in this country.
Whether you're an immigrant or whether you've been here for 50 years, we're all going
to suffer because
of this man's policies.
