Oh hi! Welcome to another episode of misc. This is the show, each week, that I do
talking about the stuff that I'm reading, watching, and consuming on a weekly
basis. This week, because I was traveling a lot, and focused on a lot of other things
in my life. I only had time to really start to watch one thing, and that one
thing is Atypical. This is the new Netflix show. The basic premise – I've only seen the
first four episodes – so the basic premise is that we're following around this 18
year old boy, who suffers from autism. Although I don't want to say it
like that. I don't want to say "suffers" from autism.
He just has autism. And how his family and his friends at large kind of
interact with that. I think that it strikes a really strong balance between
being funny when it needs to be, but also using drama to really great effect.
Currently, what we've seen right now is that Sam is the the main character,
played by ... and that's why I have my phone here at the ready. He's played by this
guy named – where is it, where is it, where is it – of course it's not here when I
need to. Keir Gilchrist. Hopefully I'm saying that name right. You'll maybe know
him if you saw this little seen horror film called It Follows from a couple
years ago. He was one of the co-stars in that movie, which by the way if you
haven't seen It Follows you really should. I think it's such a strong horror film
from the last few years. Regardless, Sam has autism, is going to
therapy and his therapist recommends that he might want to try dating to try and,
you know, push himself out of his comfort zone a little bit. This kind of leads to
him forming a crush, or thinking that who he really wants to date is his therapist,
which is tragically and comically not true. I think the cast is really
well rounded out, because we have Jennifer Jason Leigh, and we have ...
oh gosh Michael Rapaport as the parents in this TV show, and they are the
ones who were kind of really trying to point him in the right direction. I think
specifically Michael Rapaport is really, really good in this show as kind of the
befuddled dad trying to make the best out of all the situations, but not really
being the best equipped with it. Jennifer Jason Leigh on the other hand is still
really good. The unfortunate part for me is that she's tending to go down this
road that happens a lot, I find, in modern dramas – modern family dramas – a certain
plotline is happening that I really dislike seeing in drama. That's really on
me. I'm gonna point that out there. Right now they're kind of going down this
route of stuff that I don't really care to see, but that's the story
that this show wants to tell, and I'm trying to be as spoiler-free as possible.
Rounded out once more by his sister, let's see if I can grab her name here.
Very quickly. His sister is played by somebody else. It doesn't tell me on this
thing here. Oh, Bridget Lundy Payne. I'm sure again
I'm butchering her name. She's kind of coming to grips with the fact that
she's the younger sister, but she stands up for her brother. but can still
make fun of him when she needs to. And is kind of also going out into the dating
life at the same time, and trying to figure all that stuff out. She does not
suffer from autism. Again, should not use that word. Overall though, this is me just
kind of telling you what the plot of the show is. Overall I am enjoying it. Is it
on the upper echelon of great TV shows that are currently out there? Probably
not. It's probably not even in, like, the top, you know, 10% or even the top 30% of
Netflix shows that are out there. At least these first few episodes. But I'm
really excited to see where it goes. It really hooked me on the first episode. I
really want to see where this goes to. Even though it's a dram,a it's only 30
minutes long each episode with only eight episodes that were uploaded to
Netflix. So this is something that you can really
get through relatively quickly. I haven't because I continually become more and
more busy by each passing day. Let me know what you think about Atypical
down in the comments below. I'd love to hear your thoughts, and also let
me know what I should be watching, reading, consuming in my life. So until
next week, watch good stuff!
