Hello everyone! I'm Shametria Routt Banks, The Routty Math Teacher, and
today I'm sharing five essential Google Chrome extensions for teachers. If you're
not familiar with Google Chrome, I'd like to first start by talking a little bit
about Google Chrome extensions. What is a Chrome extension? Chrome extensions are
small software programs that enhance the functionality and capabilities of your
Google Chrome browser. Where can I find Chrome extensions? Chrome extensions can
be found in the Google Chrome Store. You can access the store by doing a
search for "Google Chrome Store" and from there, you can search through all of the
extensions or you can type a specific extension directly into the search box.
How do I access an extension once downloaded? All of your Chrome extensions
will show up to the right of the address bar. You'll be able to see a little
icon for each one of them there and once downloaded you can just click on
whichever extension you would like to use and be able to access its tools at
that time. The first Google Chrome extension I'd like to share with
you is called Screencastify. Screencastify is used to capture edit
and share videos. I'm actually using it right now as I create this video for you.
I imagine that it would be a super useful tool in the classroom because it
will allow you to record over a Google slideshow, like what I'm doing, or you can
be on a web page and talk through something, use the tools on Screencastify
to share something with students, and save it for them that way they can play
it back later. It's also a great way to share information and important videos
with parents. The second tool is called Grammarly. Grammarly is used to edit
written content anywhere that you type. I love Grammarly
because it's more than just a spell checker. It actually will edit your
grammar. So if you have an awkward combination of words or you use the
wrong form of a word, Grammerly will pick it up. Next I have Bitly. Bitly is used to
shorten links. This is a great tool because when you find that you'd like to
share a website with students and it has a very awkward combination of letters
and numbers strung together as the address, you can use the Bitly extension
to shorten that and to actually name it something that would be easy for your
students to just type in. For example, if you're if you're wanting to share a
game about adding and subtracting fractions, you could title it "Adding and
Subtracting Fractions Practice 1" and that then becomes a much easier address
to share with students and to have them type into the address bar. The next
extension is called Save to Google Drive. It allows you to save documents,
images, web content, and videos directly to your Google Drive. No more having
to download things and then upload them into Google Drive. Using this extension,
you click the extension and tell Google where you want it to go in your Drive.
Finally, I have an extension called One Tab. One Tab converts your active
tabs into a single list. What's great about this is that you can take maybe
all of the tabs that you use when you arrive at school in the
morning and you're getting ready to start up the day, you can take all of those tabs,
create one tab with them, and access them with a click of a button.
No more having to type in each individual address. You go to One Tab,
click that group of tabs, and they pop up magically! Alright, that is five essential
Google Chrome extensions for teachers. I'd like to thank you so much
for watching. I hope to see you again next time and until then, I'd like for
you to head on over to www.therouttymathteacher.com for more tips, strategies,
and ideas. Bye!
