Hey! What's up Troublemakers! I'm Rod and
I'm Vince and we're self-deprecating
romantic pop rock duo RKVC. We're a band, we're
songwriters and today we're going to
talk about something that most people
don't like to talk about. But first, make
sure you've subscribed, if you haven't
already, to this channel.
Recently, we were at a little event right here in LA where
a very successful songwriter was speaking
about his experiences in the industry.
This songwriter has written hits for
everyone from Ariana Grande to Flo Rida
to Justin Bieber...the list goes on.
And he talked a little bit about how he went
from writing songs in his sh*tty little
apartment that he was being evicted from
to winning Grammy Awards and having
#1 Billboard Hits. And we've all heard
them - the stories of how our heroes got
to where they are. Whether it be a
struggling songwriter that worked their
way up to the top, a starving artist that
(against all odds) became a household name,
or the indie powerhouse that finally got
their big break writing hit songs -
hit songs for the biggest pop stars on earth
as well as performing massive
chart-topping hits of their own.
But there's always something missing from
the story -
the middle.
Let's go back to the story from the
beginning of the video. What happened
between being evicted to winning a
Grammy Award? Even the storyteller admitted
that there were years between the two events.
What happened in all that time?
What was life like for them?
We're currently in the "middle" and when
it comes to our heroes,
it's kind of hard to find stories about
their "middle". Not that it's stopping us
from working our way towards where we
want to be. This last year has been
amazing for us, both in the ups and downs.
Though some think it's not a good idea to
talk about it, we can't ignore
we're in the "middle" And for now, that's a
good thing. Being in the "middle" means
you're doing it! And "it" just isn't an
idea or a dream anymore.
It means that you got out of your
comfort zone, you got over some sort of
fear, got in that vehicle of ambition and
hit the road. Now this isn't just another
"It's the journey, not the destination"
inspirational meme. It's just a reality
that most dreamers and entrepreneurs are
in the "middle" for a significant amount
of time. The destination is great, I mean,
that's why we're on the journey in the
first place.
Yeah, you don't just pour your heart and
soul into something that you think is
going to be awful.
That'd be like hating all things Disney
and then selling all your earthly
possessions just to make a road trip to
make a road trip to Disneyland.
How much sense does that make?
The point is, the destination is
something you work hard for because it's
something you really believe in.
When it comes to finances, being in the middle
means being flexible with change.
Sometimes income is kind of like a
faucet that you can just kind of turn on
lightly and other days, most days, it's more
like running around trying to catch
rain water in a bucket -
it's hard work, but at the end of the day
we're not thirsty. Everything from album
sales to songwriting to YouTube and
Snakt videos all collectively fill that
rain bucket. This year alone we've
licensed our music to a feature film,
we've made cameos in dozens of big
YouTube productions as well as even
scored a few small branch sponsorships.
And that doesn't even include the
increase from previous years of how many
times we've been hired to write music
for albums, corporate projects, brands and
just, you know, anywhere people need music.
Sure, we've had our Hollywood disappointments.
We've been dropped from
projects last minute and come so close
to big breaks that it's hurt. We could let
it be upsetting, but one thing that we
have learned is to learn from these
things and that if projects are being
that flaky anyway it's probably not a
path that we wanted to be on in the
first place. And yes, there are obstacles,
but they're obstacles that only exist
when you're on the right track.
Even though those close calls are
heartbreaking, there was a time when we
weren't even close. And that big project
that we got dropped from ended up
becoming a huge commercial flop anyway
so we may have dodged a bullet there.
Being in the "middle" means we're not
cutting corners or taking shortcuts.
It means were carefully crafting and
enjoying the ride. A few nights ago we
were hanging out with a big group of our
friends that consisted of musicians,
actors, filmmakers, digital content
creators and all of the above.
Yeah, it was getting late and we were all
laughing about how much work we had the
next day on our various medias and
platforms. And the next part is kind of
hard to describe without being there, but
it came to a point where we all had
this moment of clarity that someday,
years down the road, when we're farther
along on our paths, we would look back on
nights like these, when we were hanging
out in the YouTube parking lot freezing
in the California cold
and talking about all the creative
projects that we were going to do and
the things that we were looking forward
to our futures.
This video isn't for others in the
"middle" to relate to.
We know what we're all going through.
This is for farther down the line so
that everyone, ourselves included, won't
forget we had a middle. Also this video's
for any of you that aren't in the middle
yet, maybe you haven't started yet or
maybe you have started and you're trying
to get to the "middle" of your dream.
It's not popular to talk about, but we hope
you get there because it means you're on
your way. And for the rest of us who are
currently in the "middle" and for anyone
who remembers being there - a toast to the
"middle". We hope the very best for all of
you in the year ahead. This is Rod and Vince,
we're RKVC and we'll see you next time.
