Youtube daily Nov 13 2017

I know a guy, a business consultant that does something interesting.

If you click on the contact page of his site, it goes immediately to Facebook Messenger

and starts a private conversation with him.

We can debate the merits of that, but more and more companies are using Facebook Messenger

to talk to their customers, and Facebook is working on a great enhancement to help streamline

that communication.

Before we get into that, though, I'm Mickey Mellen, and this is A Brighter Web episode

number 25, brought to you by all of us at GreenMellen.

Our goal with this podcast is to give you quick weekly insights for news, products,

and ideas so we can all make the web a brighter place to be.

These might be actual web tips talking about strategies, search engines, WordPress plugins,

and UX, or it might be productivity ideas to help you get more done and free up your

time to do great things.

We also want to thank our sponsor, ClickHOST.com.

Today we'll talk more about Facebook Messenger for business, improved Google Street View

imagery, longer text on Twitter, and lots of news from Google.

Let's dig in.

As I mentioned at the top of the show, more and more companies are using Facebook Messenger

to communicate with customers, and now it'll be a lot easier.

You can start a conversation directly on a website with the new Messenger plugin that's

coming out soon, and then that conversation will be part of Messenger all across the web,

mobile, and tablet devices.

Users can keep that conversation going wherever they are, but they can start directly from

your site with a little chat box that connects directly to Facebook Messenger.

Now the feature's in closed beta for now and no word on when it will roll out, but I suspect

it'll be very popular once it does and we'll keep you posted on that.

Google Street View is awesome but if you've used it you've probably seen the stitched

effect that happens with Street View images where the different cameras that they capture

from the car kind of stitch things together and it gets a little chunky on the sides.

Google's now working on some tools that'll make that imagery much more seamless and should

be awesome but what I really like about this is just it's further proof on how hard Google's

working on photos.

If you use Google Photos you know how great it is and some of the weird almost creepy

things they can do with it that are really quite awesome.

You should check that out if you haven't.

Really, my favorite feature of Google Photos is for people that are low on space in your

phone where Google can capture all the images from your phone, save them in Google Photos

and then clear them off your phone to save you space.

So people that are low on space totally should check out Google Photos but regardless Google's

doing awesome things with photography and this new enhancement to Street View is just

further proof of how their investing in that space.

Most of you have probably heard by now, but Twitter has now doubled the number of characters

you can tweet at least in the English language from 140 to 280, and that should be live for

everyone so much longer tweets will be coming your way.

In addition, and not talked about as much is your usernames can now be 50 characters.

Now your actual Twitter handle is shorter but the name you put attached to it can be

much longer and actually say what you want say without having to truncate that as much

as it used to be before, so Twitter is making everything a bit longer to make it more clear

on what you're doing, but there's kind of mixed reactions to how people are taking that.

Related to that, Google's working to improve the accuracy of the tweets they show on their

search results.

After the shooting in Texas recently, a lot of misinformation surfaced at the top of Google

based on Twitter.

Now, Google ranks tweets using similar algorithms to the normal pages so if they see a lot of

tweets that say something similar they'll take that as being the truth even though it

often isn't, so they're working hard to show authoritative information for that kind of

thing and they say they're working very hard to make that better, so we should see improved

tweet accuracy from what Google surfaces in the coming weeks and months.

If you've ever searched on Google for products and seen the little product comparison widget

pop up, they've added a few new features to that that are pretty nice.

The new one compares not just pricing but also various other specs such as color and

capacity and that kind of thing, and it now has a highlight differences toggle at the

top that you can toggle on and quickly determine what is different between the two products,

so if they're the same size, same weight, but different colors, you'll see it highlighted

in that right there.

Screen shots of that can be found in our show notes so you can see for yourself how that

works.

Google's just confirmed that JavaScript links pass full link signals, so on a web site there's

different ways you can make links.

There's the standard way to make just a normal ahref link to another site, but you can also

have links inside of JavaScript, so a user named Cyrus asked Google, "A JavaScript link

passes PageRank just like any other link, right?"

Google's John Meuller replied "Yes, a link is a link regardless of how it comes to the

page.

It wouldn't really work otherwise."

So, there you have it.

There's been talk over the years that Google can't see those as well and you do have to

be careful because if your JavaScript is poorly written, Google may have trouble with it,

but if you've written it right, it works well for users.

Google can see those links and it'll pass the full link juice through those links to

wherever they end up going.

Google's also come out with more news that we thought we already understood, but they

said it very clearly.

Google's John Mueller said "You can do a lot of things but it doesn't make a good strategy

for all sites.

Often a few strong pages are better than many weak ones."

So, again, this is something Google's said for a while.

They want quality content and it is good to have a lot of pages on your site in theory

but only if they're all high quality pages.

If you have to make a choice between having 20 soft pages or 10 great ones, you're much

better off to have 10 great pages and Google's confirmed that.

This one was kind of interesting and not something I've heard before.

Someone named Dan asked, he said "SEO theory: Quality external links to image files embedded

on quality pages will help the quality page rank in a normal Google web search."

So what's he saying, if you have a well written page with an image on it and other sites link

directly to that image, he's thinking it may help the page itself rank better, and Google

tends to disagree.

John Mueller says "Why would links to an embedded image be a sign of another web page embedding

that image being more relevant?"

So again, this is John and Google always saying their main goal is to find signals of relevance

for a sites, and this isn't necessarily one.

The conversation continues though with Dan saying "that's not what I'm saying.

I'm suspecting that external links to your image file URL can help your page that embeds

the image rank better.

Yes or no?"

And John again says "that seems unlikely.

Links to an image aren't links to the page which is kind of the main point," but he said

"it's also hard to tell which page an image really belongs to such as a logo."

So on most web sites his example, your logo file is a single image file on the server,

so if someone links to that one, which page are they linking to in a way?

They're linking to the image but that image is on every page.

Google can't really figure that out, and John says Google doesn't even want to figure that

out because it doesn't really matter.

They want to see links to the pages to show that the page is interesting and that's as

far as they take that.

Yelp is cracking down further on companies that ask for reviews.

Yelp and Google have long said you shouldn't be soliciting reviews for your business but

Yelp seems to be cracking down harder on that.

As a business owner, it's usually good to ask for them but don't go too far.

To look at their policies quickly, Google says "reviews are most valuable when they

are honest and unbiased.

If you own or work at a place, please don't review your own business or employer.

Don't offer to accept money, products or services to write reviews for a business or to write

negative reviews about a competitor.

If you're a business owner don't set up review stations or kiosks at your place of business

just to ask for reviews written at your place of business."

So Google's I can pretty much agree with.

That seems pretty logical and I agree those are pretty fair rules.

Yelp's takes it a bit further and you'll notice in the first part here, they'll have a thing

that says "don't ask" which is something that a lot of us do, so let's look at Yelp's policies

real quick.

They have four bullets.

The first one is one, don't ask customers, mailing list subscribers, friends, family

or anyone else to review your business.

Two, don't ask your staff to compete to collect reviews.

Three, don't run surveys that ask for reviews from customers reporting positive experiences

and four, don't offer freebies, discounts or payment in exchange for reviews.

It will turn off savvy consumers and it may be illegal.

Yelp has a consumer alerts program to let people know about businesses that engage in

this sort of activity.

So it's noteworthy that Yelp has that "don't ask", They say don't ask customers for reviews.

I kind of disagree with that and Google doesn't mention that either.

You don't want to entice customers with gifts or discounts or anything like that or even

really encourage them to write a good review, but you should be encouraging people to leave

reviews and you know who your good customers are, and so you certainly should be asking

for that I think to some degree but Yelp's really cracking down on that, so certainly

be careful, especially with anything you publish on your website regarding asking for reviews

and that kind of thing.

And lastly, for our tip of the week, try using a password manager.

I've used LastPass on and off for years and I'm getting back into it again and the new

LastPass Teams has something pretty compelling that all of us at GreenMellen are now using.

So what LastPass Teams does is let's you synchronize your personal LastPass account with a team

LastPass account.

If you're not familiar with a password manager, what it is is just a application for your

computer or in the case of LastPass, you can install just into Chrome that when you go

to websites and type in your password, it will remember the password for you so you

don't have to remember it in the future.

The idea being you can have long complex passwords that are different on every site versus using

the same one over and over again which can be pretty dangerous.

LastPass is very affordable and the Teams feature is great for us.

So where that works is that I can use LastPass for all my personal sites to get into Facebook

and Twitter and Gmail and all that, but also the team stuff in there so we can get into

client sites and other things and keep client's credentials very, very protected under LastPass's

encryption.

So this makes it where any of us can log into a client site for the first time, save that

information in LastPass in the team section and then if anyone else at GreenMellen goes

to that client site they can get in but the credentials are completely protected.

The cost for LastPass teams is $2.42 per user per month so about 29 bucks a year per user

which is not bad.

1Password's also very popular and they have a team feature, and DashLane is another one

that's popular and they're all worth checking out and you can decide what's best for you.

And that's all we have for this week.

You can find me on Twitter at mickmel or learn lots more at greenmellenmedia.com and you

How to Remote Program C-more HMI: Stride SiteLink VPN Cloud - Duration: 4:56.

In this video, we will show the process of getting connected to a C-more HMI through

the Stride Sitelink VPN connection.

If you have not already setup you Router please see the videos for the initial setup, in the

description below.

Once you have setup your router, then continue on to this video.

First, we need to discuss the C-more IP address setup.

In this example, this is IP address of the VPN router on the control side.

To remotely program your C-more HMI it must be on the same subnet as the VPN router and

have the IP address of the Router as it's Default Gateway.

This way the C-more will be communicating through the router.

It is very important that everything is a static IP address, as one limitation of VPN

networks is that Broadcast comms will not work and broadcast comms is what is used for

auto discovery of devices.

Now let's set up the C-more's IP address locally for the first time.

So, with your C-more project open, select setup, Panel Network and then select the Ethernet

Tab.

So, enter in the IP address information we discussed before.

And then select ok.

And send this project to your HMI Now that the HMI PLC has been setup and shipped

to the remote location, let's make our first connection through the Stride Sitelink and

read our project from the panel..

Open up the Sitelink page, select your device and then connect.

Once the IX client is connected, open up the C-more software and then select Read from

Panel.

Select Ethernet and then browse.

Under Network, select the Windows Tapp Adapter.

This is the virtual connection that the IXClient uses to connect to the VPN cloud.

Now, select the Remote Link List and then Add.

Give this connection a name.

Enter in the IP address of the C-more Panel and then typically on remote connection like

this I increase the Timeouts to the max.

Hit Ok.

Now select the link that we just created and select Ok.

Now the software will browse for the Panel and then give you a go no/Go, on the Connection.

Now select to read the project.

Now you can make changes to your project and update the panel.

Let's go one step farther here, and show remotely viewing the the panel with the Remote

access feature.

In the C-more panel, to turn on remote access in your project.

Go to Setup and then Panel Network.

To turn on Remote access there is two parts to this.

We must turn on the Web server and then activate the Remote access.

While we are here if you are emailing alarms, through your HMI, we must allow internet access

with the VPN Router.

This can be found in the dashboard under configuration.

So, under Web server enable this function.

You can also change which port this uses and secure the communication with a password.

I am going to leave it open for the purposes of this video.

Now Select the Remote Access tab.

Since this VPN makes you part of the local network we do not need to add the complexity

of the remote connection.

I am going to leave the permission as View Only and use the default Account name without

a password.

This setup can be more advanced I just want to show the basic features of this connection.

Now select Ok and send this project to your HMI.

Once this is loaded, open up an Internet browser and enter in the IP address of this HMI.

Now select the remote access Link.

And now select the No firewall.

This will download an executable file that you can run on your PC.

So, select the application and not you will be asked to enter in the user name and password.

Select Ok.

And now we can view the panel.

This connection can make Improving, Controlling and monitoring your HMI and control system

much easier.

A little safety disclaimer.

Before you make any changes to your PLC Remotely take into account what you are activating

and deactivating remotely as it may cause an unsafe condition.

It is always best to have local eyes on the equipment while making these changes.

This is where the digital input on the VPN router can be useful, it will allow you to

lock out remote changes until someone is there to monitor to safety purposes

If you have any questions about the Stride VPN router please contact AutomationDirect's

Make your own pin loom - Duration: 7:01.

Hi! In this video I will tell you how I made this pin loom.

Keep watching: at the end of the video I will show some examples I made with this.

The craftsteacher, tatting, weaving, knotting, knitting, crochet

A while ago I got in touch with a zoom loom,

I just bought it, and because of that my interest was aroused

for so called pin looms

and I was looking around if I could buy some more,

but, well, I must say I couldn't find it here in the Netherlands.

Maybe I didn't search good enough, and they are here actually, but

well, to get a loom like this from the US

with the shipping costs added to it, well, I thought it became quite expensive,

so I thought: 'you know what? I will try something myself'.

Now, I'm actually not a person who is very handy with hammers and nails,

and you can see that -grinning -. It became, well, quite funny, didn't it?

They are pointing in every possible direction, but it works.

What I did: quite simple, I bought a picture frame at the Action,

that was, I think, 4 euro's or something like that,

so that was very handy, and what I did next, the glass that was in it,

I removed that, and there was a nice picture in it, and removed that too.

Here there were some things

to keep the glass plate in place, I removed that too.

Here were some things to hang it on a wall nicely,

removed that also, well, and then I started measuring,

and what I wanted to avoid

is that the nails would get on on this row,

because, well, I thought:

'that will definitely be a problem, they will probably get loose quickly',

so I wanted to go more to the outer border.

The nails have to have an equal space between them, everywhere,

and there have to be the same amount of nails on each side,

so keep that in mind. Well, in the end I had the nails,

let's see, I made it 23 centimeters (9 inch),

and the nails, they are here every centimeter.

I started off with half a centimeter, and with a pencil (make the border wider, 1 cm)

I marked it, and, well, I started hammering. Well, very soon I realized (make the border wider, 1 cm)

that that wasn't working very well for me, so I went

to the local hardware store

and they were like: 'oh, you could maybe use a prime' ,

because I thought: 'then I will have a little hole to start with,

where I can put the nails into'. Well, that worked a whole lot better,

but, well, okay, it still points in every way. But, I will show you,

by the way, these are very small nails,

they are, let's see, 20 millimeter, don't know if that's the length or the thickness,

yep, that must be the length -grinning-.

Okay, look, of course you can put them together more closely,

it is maybe a bit difficult to see on the video, but look,

if the nails are all straight, it will probably be allright,

but, you see the problem here, if there has to be a nail in between here,

and you will weave with it, and the yarn has to go in between them also,

I was like: 'well, that is not going to work',

so in the end I decided that the nails, that I already had in there,

at the half centimeters, to get them out,

so it ended up every centimeter,

and well, about hammering it in,

first of all this is not very thick, but you also don't have to hammer it in very deep.

As they are in now, I just put them in a bit,

and then they are quite firm. You see, you will weave around it,

and there will be a little tension on it,

but if you do the weaving well,

it should not be so, that there will get a lot of tension on it,

so just hammer it in a bit, enough to get it stay resistant,

that really is enough. And well, what's it all about, is that, of course, these nails

just are in an equal distance in here. So, whether they point this way, or this way,

or whatever way, it is just about they are in here

every centimeter, or, if you want it closer to each other, if you have a handy husband,

that wants to make this for you, then, okay, my cameraman is laughing out loud here, hahaha,

he really is too busy, but, come on girls, we are women,

we can do this too, don't we, you can see that, hahaha. You know, it's just, for a couple of euro's,

you just have something that you can work on nicely, and well, if you will watch my next

video's, in which I will explain how to weave on it, you will see that you just

can make fun things with it. So I say: just do it,

try it out, doesn't matter if it goes everywhere, it works!

North Korea soldier makes daring defection to South Korea across JSA - Duration: 2:02.

A North Korean soldier defects to the South in the most unexpected way: Crossing the border

at the heavily guarded Joint Security Area.

As troops stationed in the frontline are believed to be chosen for their loyalty, this could

severely bruise the regime's military pride.

He was shot at by men from his side, but was picked up by South Korean soldiers and was

taken to the hospital.

For details on the daring escape, we turn to our Kwon Jang-ho

The Joint Security Area -- located on the border between the two Koreas

and the only place where soldiers from the two sides stand face-to-face.

And at three-thirty-one PM on Monda, a lone North Korean soldier ran from a guard post

on the northern side, and crossed over the Military Demarcation Line into South Korean

territory.

The soldier suffered from gunshot wounds to his shoulder and elbow from North Korean forces

while defecting.

Upon hearing the shots, South Korean soldiers raised the alarm, but the defector was not

discovered until 25 minutes later, collapsed on the ground, 50-meters from the border and

bleeding from his wounds.

(Korean) Our soldiers safely retrieved the defector,

and urgently evacuated him to hospital to treat his injuries.

He was airlifted by a United Nations Command helicopter to Ajou University Medical Center

in Suwon, just south of Seoul, where he underwent surgery.

The defector is thought to be in his twenties or thirties, and wore a uniform of low rank.

Defecting through the JSA is extremely rare, with only two previous instances in 1998 and

2007.

South Korean authorities have reassured that there was no altercation between South and

North Korean soldiers, but added that Seoul will remain alert to any possible provocations.

It's been almost two months since North Korea last carried out a ballistic missile test,

or any other provocation, and many have hoped that this signalled an easing of tensions

on the peninsula.

It's currently unclear what response Pyongyang will give to Monday's incident.

South Korea pushes to foster homegrown, mega-sized Investment Banks - Duration: 2:08.

There's been visible push to foster Korea's own home-grown, mega-sized Investment Banks

modeled after Goldman Sachs since 2011.

At last, the country's top regulator gives the go-ahead to five IBs to expand their businesses

beyond brokerage services.

Won Jung-hwan sheds light on this development.

The Financial Services Commission, the country's top financial regulator, issued a license

Monday to Korea Investment and Securities... allowing it to issue promissory notes and

short-term corporate financing.

There are four other securities firms -- Mirae Asset Daewoo, NH Investment and Securities,

KB Securities, and Samsung Securities -- that are also expected to get the go-ahead in the

near future.

The preparations to nurture giant investment banks in Korea started back in 2011 with a

regulatory roadmap to creating a so-called Korean version of Goldman Sachs.

But local securities firms didn't yet have the capital.

So last year, the financial authorities announced a plan to permit securities firms... that

met a threshold of at least 3.6 billion U.S. dollars of equity capital to go into short-term

corporate lending.

Those with 7.2 billon dollars or more would be allowed to launch management accounts for

corporate investors.

Those changes put the big five securities companies on their way to becoming homegrown

giant investment banks, and with Monday's decision, the first one now has the right

to issue notes.

But the traditional banking sector wants the decision to be put on hold as it could disrupt

the corporate finance industry.

The Korean Federation of Banks said the local securities industry lacks an oversight system

to manage the issuance of such notes.

Short-term corporate financing has traditionally been the province of commercial banks, which

are subject to stricter rules and capital requirements.

So there is some concern that the creation homegrown, mega-sized investment banks in

Korea could destabilize the industry, especially amid a lack of regulation.

Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News.

Mr. Moon also has a series of one-on-ones lined up on the margins of the main events;

on the other side of the table...

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Singapore Prime Minister

Lee Hsien Loong.

The highlight of President Moon's bilaterals here in Manila will be his face-to-face talks

with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

(Korean) "We expect the talks between our president

and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to focus on specific, detailed measures to improve our

bilateral relations... particularly in the area of economic and trade relations... as

discussed and agreed by Presidents Moon and Xi during their summit in Vietnam."

Coming fresh on the heels of the Seoul, Beijing bilateral summit, it'll be interesting to

see how and to what extent the two will actually end a year-long standoff over the deployment

of U.S. missile defense system in South Korea.

San Diego Realtor -Home Sales- Marketing with VR - Matterport - Cardboard - Duration: 3:49.

I was out doing a shoot for one of my friends and I got an email, a package has

been delivered, it ought to be at the front door let's go see what it is. How

cool is this? Somebody sent me a gift I'm gonna have to set up the studio and do

an open boxing, for you. Okay everybody before I open this I want to say thank

you I hit 100 subscribers, now something's gonna happen for Beethoven

here real soon. Don't know exactly what it is but something's gonna happen for

Beethoven. Now why would you stay and watch this vlog? It has to do with Google

cardboard but this is from Unofficial Cardboard Incorporated, they sent this to

me this is not an advertisement. So what's Google cardboard if you were

to go to Youtube and search you'd find that in the first three search results

for videos, there's over 12 million views. It relates to virtual reality something

that is coming more and more into the real estate sphere, for Realtors the

Matterport system is VR capable the gentleman that sent this to me and again

this is not an advertisement, the gentleman that sent this to me was

impressed with one of the Matterport videos I did he says you need to have

you need to have this, so hey it's here and I'm gonna open it up and show you

guys what it is.

This is really pretty cool all you have to do is unfold the box slip a couple

pieces in you have your oculars already installed you slip your phone into this

area and now your VR capable viewing. So why is this important to real estate

agents we've all seen the VR lenses in gaming situations, we know that this is

coming. It's not yet fully arrived to real estate but at one point in time

virtual reality tourists through Matterport were not available. Now to really be

able to go 3d virtual reality with a cardboard box is phenomenal.

So each one of these samples that were sent to me were labeled so that any

business could manufacture this and hand it to a client that is going to put it

in the public's hands even faster this one actually happens to be one that

was done just for Matterport of course these are gonna go in my car and being a

Matterport Service Provider I can do the 3d modeling but until you have this

and then download the app you're not going to be able to truly read as though

it were a multi dimensional 3d rendering. You'll only be looking at it as though

it's a flat screen and you're walking through the property still it's

phenomenal stuff and it's where our industry is going. I want to say thank

you very much Unofficial Cardboard for having sent these to me I really am

pretty impressed with with where this technology is going I haven't yet seen

it applied in the field but if one of my clients says, George do

you have this? I got it ! You have a very good day, oh I got to tell you something

about Beethoven.

hey Beethoven we clear on that side

Pres. Moon outlines plan to cultivate people-oriented, peaceful, and prosperous relationship ... - Duration: 3:24.

Staying with President Moon's third and final leg of his eight day, three nation Southeast

Asia tour.

He was the keynote speaker at the ASEAN Business and Investment summit.

Before hundreds of business leaders from the region and beyond, he placed great emphasis

on the importance of Seoul and member nations building a closer relationship.

Hwang Ho-jun has the highlights of the president's speech.

President Moon's keynote speech at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit marked 20 years

since the establishment of ASEAN Plus Three,... and 10 years since the signing of a free trade

agreement between South Korea and ASEAN.

In his address, President Moon introduced the so-called "Korea-ASEAN Future Community

Doctrine."

(KOREAN) "What I have in mind for our future is a community

of three 'P's.

It's a 'people' community connecting each person and each heart, a 'peace' community

contributing to the establishment of peace in Asia through security cooperation, and

a 'prosperity' community that seeks economic cooperation that is mutually beneficial."

( 3P . , ' ', ' ', ' ', .)

Moon said he will work to make relations more "people-oriented" and do more to increase

multilateral human exchanges between Seoul and Southeast Asian countries,... including

more summit meetings, government-level meetings -- also, promoting exchanges between businesses

and students.

Those efforts will include re-examining Korea's visa system... to make it easier for people

from those countries to come to South Korea.

President Moon also pledged to visit all 10 ASEAN member states during his time in office.

As for "peace," President Moon vowed to reinforce cooperation with ASEAN in areas including

national defense, security, and defense industries.

More specifically, President Moon outlined the importance of joint efforts to confront

Pyongyang's nuclear and missile threats, terrorism and violent extremism, and cyber terror.

And to cultivate a "prosperous" future relationship between Korean and ASEAN member countries,

President Moon vowed to increase economic cooperation.

That includes the goal of doubling contributions to the Korea-ASEAN Cooperation Fund by 2019

and expanding trade with ASEAN to 200-billion dollars by the year 2020.

He even pledged to support next year's Asian Games hosted in Indonesia... with 5G wireless

communication technology, which will be launched on a trial basis during the upcoming 2018

Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

This isn't the first time that President Moon has mentioned the need to enhance Korea's

relationship with Southeast Asia.

His "New Southern Policy" seeks to elevate relations with the region to the level of

those with Korea's four key neighbors, the U.S., China, Japan, and Russia.

Its counterpart, the "New Northern Policy," seeks to reinforce economic cooperation with

Russia and other countries in Eurasia.

President Moon has persistently argued... that expanding Korea's diplomatic horizon

is essential for establishing peace and prosperity in the region.
