Dale Nish Finishing Process | Woodturning How-to - Duration: 3:46.
Hi I'm Mike with Craft Supplies USA and today we're gonna show you how to apply
Dale Nish's favorite finish to your woodturnings.
Dale Nish taught this process of finishing in our woodturning workshop
program for over 25 years. It was his go-to method and is still one of our favorites.
It produces a nice, even appearance on high-figured woods with
changing grain directions and splotchy woods like cherry.
It's also extremely durable and requires little maintenance and it doesn't darken the wood like an oil finish.
We'll need a few supplies to complete the finish.
Deft Clear Wood Finish, lacquer thinner, a top coat finish like Waterlox or ARM-R-SEAL,
a finish bottle, sand paper, a fine woven pad or steel wool, cotton cloth and wax.
Before we get started we need to thin the death clear wood finish 50/50 with
lacquer thinner. This will make it a lot easier to apply and it'll dry faster too.
Give the Deft a good shake to mix all the solids together and then pour a 1 to 1
ratio of Deft and lacquer thinner into a finish bottle.
Now let's get started with the finishing process.
Start by thoroughly sanding the piece through at least 320 grit. take your time to remove all the scratch
marks, blemishes and torn end grain because the finish will accent them
which we definitely don't want.
Using a rag, clean off any dust on the piece.
With the lathe stopped, apply a generous coat of the thinned Deft onto the piece and let it soak in.
Endgrain areas tend to need more finish, so look around the piece and apply more
Deft to any dull areas and let them soak in a bit longer.
While the Deft is still wet, wipe the piece dry with a clean cotton cloth and let it dry for about an hour.
This will create a barrier that will prevent the top coat from darkening the wood.
Now that the sealing coat is dry, apply the top coat with a fine woven pad or steel wool.
Dale liked to use Waterlox, but similar finishes will work just as well.
Use the fine woven pad to wet sand at slow speed, removing any
raised grain and any shiny spots remaining on the surface.
Keep wet sanding until you've got a nice consistent sheen. It shouldn't take too long.
Now buff the work piece dry with a soft cloth, allowing 30 minutes to dry.
If you want to build up the gloss, keep adding more coats. I'm gonna stop at two coats of Waterlox for nice close-to-the-wood finish.
Once the Waterlox is dry, final buffing can be done using a soft cloth and some wax.
Dale liked to use Lemon Oil Wax, so that's what I'm using here.
The wax doesn't add any protection, but it gives the piece a nice soft feel and
it smells great too.
We'll that wraps up this pro tip. Now we've got a durable, natural looking finish on this highly figured piece of Silver Maple.

Liverpool's unnamed January transfer target: Speculating who the Reds are back in for
Liverpool have been linked with reigniting their interest in a high-profile player this month, but who is that highly-rated individual?.
Speaking on Anfield Index's 'Media Matters' podcast, hosted by This is Anfield contributor Sachin Nakrani, the Telegraph's Jason Burt gave his thoughts on the Reds' January transfer business after selling Philippe Coutinho.
On potential incomings, Burt got Liverpool supporters excited by claiming the club are trying to go back in for a top player they have been linked with in the past, albeit with hope more than expectation.
"It's not one of the obvious names," he said.
"I don't think it's achievable and I've been asked not to write it.
Jonathan Northcroft of the Sunday Times backed up Burt's claims in the show that followed.
"The player Jason was talking about is a player who Liverpool have been interested in for some time," Northcroft said.
"I think anyone who comes in will be of that ilk.
There's been a good deal of good transfer planning.".
These comments have got us thinking about who this mystery player may be—here are five who spring who mind.
Christian Pulisic.
Perhaps already the most talented American footballer of all time, Christian Pulisic is someone Liverpool have tracked in the past.
The prodigiously gifted 19-year-old is already a star for Borussia Dortmund, but with the Bundesliga giants showing signs of stagnating a little this season, a new challenge may well appeal.
Possessing lightning pace, versatility and quality in the final third, the USA international would be an incredibly exciting capture.
He could adopt a right-sided role in a 4-4-2 system, allowing Mohamed Salah to push up alongside Roberto Firmino in attack.
Julian Brandt.
This time last year, Julian Brandt was being pencilled in as Jurgen Klopp's first-choice summer signing, bringing speed and directness to the team that only Sadio Mane was offering.
The deal ended up failing to materialise, however, with the youngster concerned about a lack of playing time, but has that changed now?.
Brandt turns 22 in May, and he may feel that his time at Bayer Leverkusen is reaching its natural conclusion, with a transfer to a more prestigious club required.
Klopp is believed to be a huge admirer of his compatriot and, much like Pulisic, he would bring great quality in the final third.
Julian Draxler.
Another very talented Germany international, Julian Draxler has all the attributes to succeed in this Reds side.
Links to Liverpool have been fairly sparse of late, but the comments of Burt and Northcroft suggest the player in question would be a signing slightly out of left-field.
Draxler fits the bill, in that respect.
Capable of thriving in an attacking midfield role or out wide, Draxler has the experience and class to come straight in and fill a Coutinho-shaped void.
Mauro Icardi.
When discussing the best strikers in the world right now, Mauro Icardi isn't a name that rolls off the tongue as much as the likes of Luis Suarez, Robert Lewandowski, Harry Kane and Cavani.
The Inter Milan superstar is right up there with the best of them at the moment, though, with 18 goals in just 22 appearances this season, including a hat-trick in the Milan derby.
No concrete links have appeared in the past, but the Argentine is someone who would suit Liverpool down to the ground, with his tenacity, quality and goalscoring prowess.
It would also provide both great competition for the brilliant Firmino and add a huge amount of squad depth, and be a transfer from nowhere.
Real Madrid have been rumoured to be making a move, however, which could scupper things.
Luis Suarez.
This is a very 'out there' shout, in fairness, but could a shock return for Suarez, arguably Liverpool's most talented ever player, be on the cards?.
'El Pistolero' has been sensational for Barcelona since departing Anfield in 2014, establishing himself as one of the top three or four footballers on the planet.
This season has not gone to plan, though, with 11 goals in 23 matches a poor return by his standards, and there are murmurs that he is unhappy.
As his 31st birthday approaches this month, could Klopp be eyeing up a move for the striker, with Barca looking for a younger replacement moving forward?.
It is, admittedly, highly unlikely, but having Suarez back would be met with unbridled joy, and Liverpool could still get several excellent years out of him.
He could be magnificent alongside Firmino or Salah, but also rotate if it is clear that his very best days are behind him.

Transfer rumours continue to circulate surrounding further Liverpool moves during January; here's all the speculation from Wednesday.
With the Philippe Coutinho money now safely banked, it's inevitable that the Reds will be linked with many more creative players to fill the void.
That's the case in part today, but there are plenty of suggestions surrounding outgoing players.
Some, such as in the case of Emre Can or Daniel Sturridge, might be expected.
Others, including star forward Mohamed Salah who only arrived in the summer, will make for utterly unwelcome reading for Reds fans.
Decide for yourself from Wednesday's gossip columns which have grains of truth within….
Real Madrid to step up Salah interest.
After the Reds snared Salah for £35m in the summer, a few were questioning if they'd overpaid by a little or a lot.
Having broken the 20-goal barrier even before the turn of the year, the only question now is whether or not the Reds could be charged with daylight robbery.
The African player of the year's form has been immense and has attracted admiring glances from elsewhere as a result, with Real Madrid chief among his admirers.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio now claims that Madrid want to react to Barcelona signing Coutinho by swooping for his former team-mate.
Salah is a player Madrid consider "worthy of wearing the shirt," according to the report.
With Karim Benzema's goal tally for the season in all competitions currently standing at five, that's perhaps not a surprise.
Draxler still in Klopp's eyeline.
A long-standing rumour is that Julian Draxler may be tempted to the Premier League, though the German is now a regular again with PSG.
The fit is clear: he can play as a No.
8 or wide on the left—the two spaces Coutinho filled, and undoubtedly at a lower cost.
The Express report that Draxler is Jurgen Klopp's first alternative if Thomas Lemar is unavailable.
There are two other factors to consider though.
Firstly, Draxler isn't a bit-part player, so arranging any deal might prove tricky on a personal level.
And secondly, Klopp has habitually waited until his first choice is available rather than moving to alternatives.
Emre Can with choices aplenty.
Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is out of contract at the end of the season and his future is still uncertain.
It does, however, look more and more like he'll be off to Turin for 2018/19, with the Mail reporting he had three teams in for his signature.
Can has supposedly rejected both Bayern Munich and Manchester City in favour of a pre-contract agreement with Juventus, according to reports in Italy.
While nothing has been confirmed, the inference that Can has agreed terms with Juve is coming from all angles.
Sami Khedira, a German international team-mate who plays at Juve, has also urged his team to finalise Can's signature, according to Sky Sports.
The Reds remain hopeful that they'll come to a new agreement with Emre Can, but it looks a remote possibility at this point.
Lemar thrown into the bargain basket.
Thomas Lemar is, by all accounts, the Reds' first choice to replace Coutinho.
He's a smart fit tactically and technically in many respects…and he's also set to cost one team or another an absolute fortune.
The Echo today report French outlet RMC Sport suggesting Lemar's price will be lowered, however.
A €70 million fee (£60m or so) isn't exactly cheap, but it's still less than half the money brought in from the sale of Coutinho.
However, the French media don't expect a bid from Liverpool to come in, with Arsenal instead seen as prime candidates to launch an offensive for his signature.
Sturridge eyeing Italian stint.
Daniel Sturridge has been struggling for game time again this season, with injury keeping him out recently.
Before that, he was bound to bench duty, with a watching brief assigned to him as Roberto Firmino hit the goal trail.
The latest suggestions are that Sturridge will depart the Reds—with Tuttosport (viaMirror) reporting him as an option for Inter Milan.
A loan deal until the end of the season is suggested as being possible.
Sturridge has netted three times this season for Liverpool and wants more action to secure a World Cup spot in the summer.
Potential return for Suso suggested.
Remember Suso? After departing Anfield for AC Milan, he took a while to establish himself—but is now one of their most important players.
A scheming and goalscoring threat in Serie A, he's reported by the Express as being a player the Reds "may look at re-signing.
Upon closer inspection, though, their 'report' stems from a mere suggested list from the Echo as to which players might fit the required template, rather than reported transfer targets.
An interesting option, but there's no reason to think this is an ongoing rumour to consider right now.
Gomez a candidate to fill Coutinho void.
Another suggestion from Italy is that the Reds have put Alejandro Gomez on their shortlist of candidates to replace Coutinho.
Tuttosport (via Mirror) say the Atalanta No.
10 is of interest thanks to his dead-ball antics and goalscoring prowess.
The 29-year-old would certainly be a departure signing from the usual route taken by Klopp and his backroom staff of late when identifying new recruits.

Thomas Lemar: Is Monaco midfielder Liverpool's ideal Philippe Coutinho replacement?
Liverpool's interest in AS Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar has intensified since the exit of Philippe Coutinho, but where would the Frenchman fit in?.
Coutinho's £142 million switch to Barcelona has left the Reds in need of a replacement, with the Brazilian one of the club's most important players since joining from Inter Milan in 2013.
Wearing the No.
10 shirt, Coutinho provided Liverpool with their creative zeal, and more so than any other player in Jurgen Klopp's squad he was perfectly equipped to break down rigid defences.
As with a plethora of stars to have left Anfield in the past, the Reds will move on without their former talisman, but it will be a tough task.
In the immediate push for a replacement, Lemar has emerged as the most likely target, with Klopp having already seen a big-money bid for the 22-year-old rejected last summer.
Whether he arrives in January or ahead of next season remains to be seen, but if Liverpool are successful in signing Lemar, what can he bring to Merseyside?.
Who is Thomas Lemar?.
Born in Baie-Mahault, in the France's overseas region of Guadeloupe, Lemar stayed in his hometown until he was 15, turning out for local side Solidarite-Scolaire.
From there, he joined Caen as a teenager in 2010, initially playing at academy level before moving up to the first team for the start of 2013/14, debuting in a 3-1 win at home to FC Dijon.
That day at the Michel-d'Ornano Stadium saw Lemar replace Jerome Rothen to take up a midfield role alongside N'Golo Kante.
And just as the diminutive midfielder made his defining move to Leicester City in 2015, Lemar left Caen for Monaco in the same summer, after two years on the senior stage in the north west.
Monaco paid just £3.
5 million to sign a 19-year-old Lemar, who joined alongside the likes of Fabinho and Rony Lopes as Leonardo Jardim oversaw another overhaul in the principality.
Among those to leave Monaco ahead of 2015/16 were Layvin Kurzawa, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Anthony Martial, who made a record £58 million move to Man United.
Lemar was not Martial's replacement, instead largely operating in attacking midfield and out wide while his countryman had played as a No.
9, but he soon commanded a similar influence.
After scoring five goals and laying on five assists in 34 games in his first campaign with Monaco, Lemar truly broke through last season.
Alongside Fabinho, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Bernardo Silva, Kylian Mbappe and the veteran Radamel Falcao, and with Benjamin Mendy providing further width on the left flank, he thrived.
In 2016/17, Lemar scored 14 and assisted 17 in 55 appearances in all competitions as Monaco finished eight points clear of Paris Saint-Germain to win the Ligue 1 title, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.
It was a landmark season for an ever-changing Monaco side, but while it earned stars like Bakayoko (Chelsea), Mbappe (PSG), Mendy and Silva (both Man City) moves elsewhere, Lemar was one of few to remain.
That doesn't seem likely for long, however, as the 22-year-old has all the attributes required to perform at the very top.
What Could He Bring to Liverpool?.
Lemar is a difficult player to place as he is so positionally versatile: at Caen, he often performed deeper in a midfield three, and for Monaco he's largely served on the left wing or as No.
10.
The 22-year-old is also able to play on the right flank, while his sole appearance at left-back for Monaco, in 2016's 10-2 win at home to JS Saint-Jean Beaulieu in the Coupe de France, saw him tally two assists.
He is a quick, nimble dribbler with a fine appreciation of space and the ability to pick up the ball and jink through defences with skill and close ball control.
A strong, creative midfielder, Lemar is adept at beating his man and lay the ball off into dangerous areas, and his crossing ability can split defences from both deep and towards the byline.
He complements this with a genuine goal threat, possessing a cannon of a left foot that is an invaluable asset from long range both in open play and from set-pieces.
Lemar is an ace in the pack, with his first touch, dribbling ability and eye for goal allowing him to turn a game on its head within the space of seconds.
But an under-appreciated area of his game that has developed swiftly under Jardim is his off-ball work, performing with an intensity and industry that perfectly suits a high-pressing system.
He has averaged 1.
5 successful tackles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 so far this season, with only Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (1.
6) and Roberto Firmino (1.
9) averaging more of Klopp's forward options.
Furthermore, his average of 2.
3 key passes per 90 is higher than all but Coutinho (3.
2) of the Reds' first-choice attacking midfielders in the first half of the season.
This blend of hard work and productivity make him an ideal candidate for an expansive attacking side, and could be exactly what Liverpool need moving forward.
Could He Replace Coutinho?.
Klopp has a variety of options to consider in the wake of Coutinho's departure.
He could opt to change formation to navigate his absence, with the use of a 4-4-2 in recent months relying more heavily on the stability of a two-man base to give his wingers more freedom.
Or he could place further responsibility on the shoulders of another player, with Oxlade-Chamberlain's upturn in form suggesting he is capable of relieving the creative burden.
The long-term solution should, invariably, be replacing Coutinho with another high-calibre talent, and Lemar is arguably the ideal candidate.
His ability to operate on the left, in the No.
10 role and in a deeper midfield duty is a clear similarity with the Brazilian.
He is similarly built, both standing at 5'7″, and similarly programmed, most notably in his creativity and long-range goal threat.
And his diligent work out of possession would allow him to adapt quickly within Klopp's system, though there may be an adjustment period in terms of the physical demands of the English top flight.
It may be a difficult deal to broker, as though they are willing sellers Monaco will be aware of both the demand for their No.
27 and the Reds' swollen coffers following Coutinho's exit.
But Lemar would be worth every penny to Liverpool, as at just 22 he is one of the closest like-for-like Coutinho replacements they could identify.

Streep — like most people in Hollywood — believed she had moral high ground to bully us.

This last year has brought even greater damage to the woman's reputation.
It came out that one of her biggest allies in the business, Harvey Weinstein, was a serial
sex predator and rapist.
As stories poured out about how he abused, harassed, and assaulted vulnerable actresses,
people began to wonder: How was this going on and "nobody" knew about?
Eyes turned to Streep, a woman so devoted to Weinstein that she once called him God.
Few believe she and the rest of the Hollywood crowd were ignorant of Weinstein's crimes.
Yet, Meryl continues to claim the moral high ground over conservatives in America.
She has the audacity — along with the rest of Hollywood — to lecture us about right
and wrong.
Sorry, but we aren't protecting an industry full of rapists, harassers, and child-molesters.
The celebs are.
Recently, Meryl appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to gush over the "President Oprah" fantasy.
Ignoring the many sins of her own industry, she speculated on the kind of cabinet a celebrity
president would have.
Surprise, surprise, it would be nothing but vapid, shallow, attention-seeking celebrities.
Actress Meryl Streep has made a number of suggestions over potential Cabinet members
for an Oprah Winfrey presidency, including fellow actors such as Tom Hanks, Harrison
Ford, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson…
When pressed on who Oprah could appoint to her Cabinet or as Vice-President, Streep also
suggested just "[keeping] it in Hollywood."
"Somebody from the stage [mentioned] Tom Hanks, and he seemed ready to go," she said.
"That would be a pretty good ticket…
You could just keep it in Hollywood, you know, you could have The Rock as the Joint Chief
of Staff, Harrison Ford running defense."
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has also repeatedly fueled speculation about his own presidential
run, describing it as a "real possibility," although it is not clear whether he would
run as an Independent or on a party platform.

It stuns me to see how arrogant and blind this woman — and her industry — is.
They have been protecting sexual predators for decades.
They have lectured us on how evil we are for not voting for liberals.
Their names are constantly in the tabloids for their wild, unchecked, immoral behavior.
And, then, they are deluded enough to think they should be running the country?
We're at a point now where we should be asking if America should even support their
industry.
Why should we throw away our hard-earned cash to prop up a business that abuses women, men,
and children?
This is an industry that was complicit in the molestation of child actors, an industry
that allowed producers to lure women into hotel rooms, and an industry that looked the
other way when young teenage boys were harassed by older actors.
Instead of sending them to Washington, they should all be thrown into jail!
Americans who value morals and decency should strongly consider boycotting Hollywood.
They need to understand their values are nothing like ours.
Instead, Hollywood ignores the burning house that is their industry, giving out awards
to each other.
Oh, you wore black to the Golden Globes?
That will erase years of crime and abuse!
Meryl Streep and the rest of them should just be happy they're still in business.
They can pat each other on the back during Jimmy Kimmel's show all they want, but I
would be shocked if any of them will still be around much longer.

John McCain is a traitor and an enemy of the American people.
Over the past few months, disturbing information has emerged about his direct ties to Muslim
terrorists, how he's basically owned by George Soros, and how he's been the malicious
ass behind the series of leaks on Trump, as McCain continues to work in the shadows with
top Democrats to get Trump impeached.
Now another scandal is exploding on the Senator, in a federal crime that's so severe it could
send him in the slammer for his remaining days on earth.
But suspiciously, now John McCain is nowhere to be found.
The liberal media has been incessant in their efforts to smear President Trump in any way
possible where they've been shameless with their barrage of fake news stories ever since
Trump took office.
The most infamous fake news story was when BuzzFeed and CNN used the fake dossier to
push the nonsense that Trump hired two Russian prostitutes to have golden showers on Obama's
bed which of course was later debunked.
The fake dossier as we learned in recent months was compiled by British spy Christopher Steele
and his London firm who later sold it to Trump's political opponents.
As two defamation lawsuits are about to be filed against Steele for his fake dossier
on Trump, officials are now confirming they have the evidence proving that McCain was
the sole perpetrator pushing the fake dossier to the liberal media, and that's where the
enormous crime McCain committed comes into play.
Blinded by his hate and jealousy for President Trump, two-time failed presidential candidate
John McCain overlooked the critical detail that working with foreign governments to overthrow
the President of the Untied States is an extremely serious federal crime, as spelled out in 18
U.S. Code 2385.
Fusion GPS is confirming that McCain was working directly with foreign spy Christopher Steele
this entire time, which is additionally a violation of the Logan Act, as citizens are
prohibited from negotiating with foreign governments in order to undermine our government.

The founders of the controversial opposition research firm Fusion GPS admitted that they
helped the researcher hired to compile the infamous, largely discredited 35-page dossier
on President Donald Trump to share the document with Sen. John McCain.
The goal of providing the dossier to McCain, the Fusion GPS founders explained, was to
pass the information contained in the questionable document to the U.S. intelligence community
under the Obama administration.
Last December, it was revealed that it was McCain who notoriously passed the controversial
dossier documents produced by the Washington opposition research firm Fusion GPS to then
FBI Director James Comey, whose agency reportedly utilized the dossier as a basis for its probe
into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Writing in a New York Times oped last Tuesday, Fusion GPS founders Glenn R. Simpson and Peter
Fritch relate that they helped McCain share their anti-Trump dossier with the intelligence
community via an "emissary."
"After the election, Mr. Steele decided to share his intelligence with Senator John
McCain via an emissary," the Fusion GPS founders related.
"We helped him do that.
The goal was to alert the United States national security community to an attack on our country
by a hostile foreign power."
Now reports confirm that McCain has suddenly gone missing from D.C., as the scandal implodes
around him as True Pundit confirmed:
"So it was of little surprise that when the bogus Trump dossier reached a fever pitch
of debate and finger pointing on Tuesday, McCain was nowhere to be found.

Is McCain even in D.C?
No.
Sources report he is still at his $15 million mountain-top compound in Arizona.
Is he under treatment for his Stage IV cancer treatment.
No one is saying.
Like always with everything McCain, it's hard to believe what is true and what is polished
hype to make him appear to be a hero.
But this was predicted in December and even before.

During the Obama Administration, the disgraced Senator secretly met with Muslim terrorists
in Syria where he then helped get ISIS into power after building up the Free Syrian Army.
Then several weeks later, McCain was directly linked to the London Bridge Attack, after
it was discovered that terrorist Rachid Redouane came directly from the McCain's Free Syrian
Army, who wouldn't have even had the resources necessary to carry out the terror plot had
it not been for McCain's support and financial backing.
The Daily Caller also blew the lid off another McCain scandal several months ago revealing
that he was the recipient of large donations by evil billionaire George Soros, who is one
of the most dangerous anti-American winbags on the face of the planet.
McCain's "legacy" foundation is stuffed with Soros' cash, which explains McCain's
incessant efforts to remove Trump from office in recent months, and also McCain's mission
to get Muslim terrorists into power, both key goals that Soros has had for quite some
time.
Over the past several months it was also discovered that McCain has been taking massive amounts
of money from Iranian terrorists as well.
John McCain is nothing but a traitor who has managed to worm his way into the Republican
Party to do the bidding for liberals.
Even though he'll be kicking the bucket soon, we need to expose this idiot before
he dies and nauseating tributes are made to his "legacy."
For decades, this traitor has hid behind his sob story of being a POW to divert everyone's
attention away from his true intentions.
It's high time we demand this moron be removed from office and thrown into GITMO for treason.
