The Soledar Salt Mines - Duration: 1:58.
Some 250 million years ago, a part of Ukraine was under a shallow ocean.
When the ocean dried up, it left behind a huge deposit of salt which got buried underneath
due to upheavals in the earth's crust.
A large concentration of this salt is located under a small city called Soledar, a Russian
word meaning "gift of salt".
For a long time, this area was known for brine springs, caused by the solution of underground
salt deposits by ground water.
This brine was used to produce salt since the 16th century.
The brine was cooked in pans with wood fires, to evaporate the water.
This process was extremely energy hungry, leading to large scale deforestation in the
regions south of Soledar.
In the 18th century, wood was replaced with coal, but the scale of salt production was
still low.
It was only in the late 19th century that the underground salt deposit was discovered,
and the first mining on an industrial scale took place in 1881.
Over one hundred years of mining has left huge gaping voids and connecting passageways
300 meters below the surface that are so large that one of the chambers have been converted
into a concert hall.
Another large excavated chamber is now a soccer arena.
There is even an underground church for the miners and cafes for tourists, and the walls
have been curved with numerous sculptures and reliefs.
One part of the cave has been converted into a sanitarium.
The cool and dry air containing small amounts of salt dust is believed to have therapeutic
effect.
The site is promoted to cure many respiratory diseases, allergies, and skin diseases.

And he is right.
It was a reaction on my video 'The truth about Nyquist and why 192 kHz does make sense'.
The implicit message he gave was wrong though.
Digital audio doesn't output pulses but sine waves, just as analogue equipment.
Yet I understand his remark…
When digital audio was introduced, marketeers didn't have the foggiest idea what it was
and asked techies for input.
They came with the schematic representation of sampling that shows bars that touch the
wave form at one of the top corners.
This lead to a wide believe that digital audio worked with bars or pulses.
And in an abstract way it does, but not in real analogue life.
Let me use a metaphor to explain: the carpenter.
For digitising is already ages old as any carpenter can show you.
If you ask a carpenter to copy you a shelf, the first thing he will do is get his folding-rule
out and starts measuring.
He could have taken a large piece of cardboard to copy the shape of the shelf.
That would have been very precise but also extremely inconvenient.
Wind and rain might damage the template and it is hard to transport anyway.
In stead the carpenter takes his rule and notes the measurements in his notebook or
- if it is a junior - in his smartphone.
It might be clear that the notebook is far easier to take to the workshop.
And the junior even has the measurements stored in his computer at the workshop even before
he gets there.
Now let's use some 'expensive words' as we say in my country.
The template shape would have been analogous to the shape of the shelf while the measurements
are a numerical representation of the shelf.
The scientific name for numerical is 'digital'.
It comes from the latin word for the first calculator from millennia ago: the fingers.
The latin word for finger is digitus.
This information is utterly useless of course but as a member of the Society for the Preservation
of Useless Information I couldn't resist.
Back to the carpenter.
It might be clear that a good carpenter has learned how to measure his project correctly.
That is, with sufficient precision while using as little measurements needed.
Back in the workshop he takes the rough material and draws the wanted shape based on the measurements.
He could of course have drawn his measurements as bars and given sufficient measurements
the outcome would still be somewhat rounded since the jig saw can't saw right angels
in one go.
In digital audio things are about the same.
Let's do a crash course digital audio.
Like the carpenter the analogue to digital converter first make sure correct measurements
are done.
The rule is to measure twice as often as the highest frequency that needs to be digitised.
For sound 20kHz is seen as the highest frequency so 40 thousand measurements per second would
suffice and a very steep filtering has to keep out anything above 20 kHz to avoid errors.
In practice 44 thousand one hundred times is used, technicians speak of a sampling rate
of 44.1 kHz.
Time to digitise.
We start by taking a very small piece of an analogue wave form that - for better understanding
- is an unnatural straight line.
Horizontally the time is projected while the amplitude is projected vertically.
Now the signal is measured every 44.1 thousands of a second and the values are written to
a table.
This table can be stored for future use or transported to another location.
At the place of reproduction the table is read and used to plot voltages by means of
a digital to analogue converter.
When past through the reconstruction filter, the straight line reappears unless something
went wrong.
The biggest problem that can occur is inaccurate timing of the reconstruction of the voltages.
For then the straight line doen't become a straight line again, as can be seen here.
The second potential problem of course is that the plotted voltages deviate from the
original - being higher or lower than intended.
But this hardly ever happens nowadays.
At least not to a degree that it will become easily audible.
OK, 1176hambone wanted sine waves, so let's digitalise a part of a sine wave.
It's the same again, voltages are measured and stored in a table.
If we now take away the waveform, you see on the left a graphic representation of the
values on the right.
And you can still see the waveform in it.
In playback that waveform will be reconstructed perfectly minus small errors that always occur
during conversion - or analogue recording, by the way.
But there are those -and I expect 1176hambone to be amongst them - that think the reconstruction
will be like this.
Again, I can't blame them for this is what the sales people and advertising agencies
have been promoting for years.
It's wrong, though.
If we look at the first vertical jump, that would need an instant rise in voltage, which
is simply impossible.
Since we have filtered the signal at 20 kHz, the system is limited in speed.
If you would try to achieve this instant rise, the result would be more like this: slowly
rising in time.
It might be clear this representation is incorrect.
Now if you connect the dots knowing the slowness of a 20 kHz limited system, you will end up
with the original waveform again.
It's like the jig saw that is unable to saw right angles.
Perfection is a goal, not a reality.
But a well designed, built and setup digital systeem can come very close nowadays.
The only real limitation today is the filtering that is needed at half the sampling rate.
A filter at 20 kHz will cause time smearing below 20kHz, something advanced long filters
can almost solve, like the ones by Chord, PS-Audio and others, or the apodizing filters
and the related filtering in MQA, designed by Stewart and Craven and found in more and
more DAC's these days.
Especially when combined with 192 kHz sampling where less aggressive filtering can be used.
This is the area where big steps are made, recently.
Also the timing accuracy, as I have shown in the example with the straight line, appears
to be more critical than expected.
Both the time smearing filters cause and the timing accuracy of the digital signal are
time related and it is only recently discovered how time critical our auditory system is.
And if you think these things are unique to digital audio, think again.
wow & flutter, rumble, tracking distortion, channel imbalance and many more limitations
pester analogue audio.
It is therefore impressive how well both analogue and digital audio can sound.
And how bad it can sound when done wrongly.
Still, the most impressive improvements happen in digital audio, especially in file based
audio and I will track new developments for you.

What is the statute of limitations on someone's ineligibility to be the President of the United
States?
It's not an issue that comes up very often, but Senatorial candidate Sheriff Joe Arpaio
wants to find out.
Sadly there is still doubt as to whether former President Obama should have been qualified
to run for President and rule the country for eight years.
Even though Obama is no longer in office, there's still crusaders for justice like
Sheriff Arpaio who aren't ready to give it up.
If Obama pulled the wool over our eyes, then he needs to be prosecuted for that grievous
offense.
Obama probably didn't consider Arpio to be much of a threat considering the trumped-up
discrimination charges that were laid on him when he effectively did his job.
A new day has dawned on the Trump Administration.
Not only has Arpaio been pardoned, but he's planning to run for United States Senate.
Obama is at the top of his problem list.
Daily Mail reports that Arpaio is not quite as harmless as Obama might have wished.
Not only is he pursuing the issue post pardon, but he claims to have the evidence that he
needs:
"Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joe Arpaio rebooted the anti-Obama 'birther' movement
on Wednesday, renewing his claim that the former president's birth certificate is
a 'phony document.'
'No doubt about it, we have the evidence,' the former Arizona sheriff said on CNN.
The Republican is running for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jeff Flake.
Arpaio was a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign, and
Trump showed his gratitude by pardoning him in August following a contempt of court conviction."
Like many of the things that are important to Americans, this isn't just a campaign
issue for President Trump, and this is something that he and many of us were worried about
well before it became about the 2016 election.
"Trump himself was an early proponent of the 'birther' movement, tweeting nearly
70 times about his suspicion that the long-form birth certificate produced by Obama was fraudulent.
Three months before Obama's 2012 re-election, he tweeted: 'An "extremely credible source"
has called my office and told me that @BarackObama's birth certificate is a fraud.'
Late in the 2016 campaign, Trump disavowed his earlier beliefs.
But Arpaio told CNN that the president was right the first time around.
'We have the evidence,' Arpaio said, while declining to provide details.
'Nobody will talk about it, nobody will look at it, and any time you want to come
down, or anybody, we'll be glad to show you the evidence."
Back in 2012, well before President Trump was the in the running for President, here's

and grossly criticized,' he said then, refusing to take questions from reporters.
Dubbed 'America's toughest sheriff,' Arpaio was best known for running a 'tent
city' jail in Arizona's populous Maricopa County, and for targeting suspected illegal
immigrants for arrest.
He tweeted: 'I am running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Arizona, for one unwavering
reason: to support the agenda and policies of President Donald Trump in his mission to
Make America Great Again.'"
No matter what your political affiliation, you should be interested in the President
of the United States being constitutionally qualified for the job.
If someone intentionally tries to circumvent the Constitution while lying to the American
people about it, then that is problematic on many levels.
Sheriff Joe is hopeful that he can make Obama pay.
If he's guilty of creating a false birth certificate, then that it will deter anyone
else with the same illegal ambition.

initially it seemed like the box-office performance of Star Trek beyond which
are in just three hundred forty three point five million dollars at the global
box office in 2016 was going to be the thing that prevented Star Trek 4 from
happening however it was recently revealed that Quentin Tarantino pitched
an r-rated Star Trek movie that's moving forward at Paramount with JJ Abrams
producing Tarantino is likely to direct the movie if things go well which has
seriously cast doubt on whether or not Star Trek 4 will happen there are a few
options the most likely option is that quantum Tarantino's r-rated Star Trek
movie will take the place of what would have been the initial pitch for Star
Trek for however unlikely it's also possible Paramount could make
Tarantino's movie and Star Trek 4 but that's doubtful Chris Hemsworth also
talked a bit about JJ Abrams initial pitch and what got him interested in
possibly coming back to Star Trek in the first place this r-rated Quentin
Tarantino Star Trek movie is largely mysterious at this point so it's unclear
if he'll be using the current cast or going with a totally new cast either way
his story isn't going to utilize the whole reuniting of the Crick's pitch so
Star Trek 4 as it was originally pitched pretty much the only way we'll see chris
hemsworth back in a Starfleet uniform

many prominent members of the entertainment industry lost their jobs
as a result however it looks like comedian TJ Miller will remain in
Deadpool 2 despite the sexual assault accusations against him it could end up
as a controversial move for the production but it may go unnoticed since
Miller does not have a starring role in the movie Ridley Scott made the decision
to completely remove Kevin Spacey's starring role from all the money in the
world and replaced him at the very last minute with Christopher plumb in a new
interview with Rotten Tomatoes x-men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner
revealed that Deadpool 2 is almost complete and since the movie is so close
to being finished it looks like TJ Miller despite the
serious allegations will not be recast when asked about the situation directly
Donner said we're in the final editing I don't think so the former Silicon Valley
star played a small part in the first Deadpool movie but he was a fan favorite
and provided good back-and-forth onscreen comedic chemistry with Ryan
Reynolds allegations of violent sexual misconduct have been floating around
under the surface for years for TJ Miller but it was last December when a
woman came forward to share her story of sexual assault at the hands of the actor
in the early 2000s in a year since Miller has attempted to address the
lingering allegations by occasionally making light of them
he's privately joked about committing violence against a woman in his past
according to three sources in the comedy world Miller's easygoing demeanor about
such serious allegations has prompted many professionals to refuse to work
with the comedian TJ Miller and his wife released a joint statement denying the
allegations and claimed that the victim had tried to break up their relationship
in the past the more that Muller and his wife pushed back more people came
forward to corroborate the accusations either from Miller's own mouth or from
friends of the victim as it stands the allegations which
include punching a woman in the face in addition to rape will not have an effect
on the final cut of Deadpool to Deadpool 2 is set to hit theaters on June 1st
2018 and stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool Josh Brolin as Cable and Zizi beats as
domino TJ Miller will reprise his role as weasel there have been no further
comments on the subject of Miller sexual assault allegations from anybody else in
the Deadpool camp but it looks like the comedian scenes are safe for now even
though his scenes will not all be cut out many could still end up on the
cutting room floor due to the controversy we'll just have to wait and
see when the movie comes out later this year
