The Deepest Hole Known To Man Goes So Far Down Nobody Even Knows What's At The Bottom - Duration: 5:44.
In school, we're taught that beneath the Earth's crust lies a mantle and core.
However, some people theorize that the center of the planet might actually be hollow or
there are a species of reptilian aliens that live under the crust.
While those theories are silly, they speak to our fascination with what we can't see.
Several decades ago, two countries—America and Russia—raced to drill the deepest hole
into the Earth with the goal of discovering what was at its core.
Both projects were massive undertakings, and the world was fixated on what mysteries they'd
find beneath the surface.
Russia's efforts resulted in something called the Kola Superdeep Borehole, and when you
see it, you might have to pick your jaw up off the floor.
Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the Earth's surface?
In school, you're told there's a mantle and a core, but what if there was something
else down there?
Well, in the 1960s and 1970s, America and Russia each set off to find out.
Both countries drilled boreholes deep into the ground until they couldn't go any farther.
They used enormous metal contraptions that were designed to break through even the toughest
material.
The world watched in awe as the Americans kicked off the race.
The enormous drills were fired up, and everyone hoped the project would go according to plan.
What kind of mysteries would the drillers find, if any?
The United States called their endeavor Project Mohole, and they began their drilling off
of the Pacific coast of Mexico in 1961.
This would be a massive effort with global interest, and there was a lot riding on this
team's work.
In order to ensure Project Mohole's success, the team submerged six massive buoys 200 feet
under the water in a circular pattern.
The Navy barge tasked with the actual drilling used sonar to maneuver itself over the center
of the circle and align the enormous rig.
The team was given very thorough instructions on how to handle the heavy rig.
It was a dangerous operation, and extreme caution needed to be taken the entire time.
Unfortunately, soon after the project began, it was abandoned due to lack of funding.
Almost a decade later, the Russians had organized their own drilling team and began their quest
to reach the center of Earth.
On May 24, 1970, they set their sights on the Kola Peninsula.
The Russians called their endeavor the Kola Superdeep Borehole.
From 1970 to 1994, the skilled group of Russian drillers managed to burrow a third of the
way through the Baltic continental crust.
The hole they drilled still stands as the deepest man-made hole in the world.
Here's an illustration showing just how deep the Russian borehole was—and this wasn't
even the deepest it eventually went!
At that point, it was deeper than even Mount Everest was tall.
That's an amazing geological feat!
The Kola Superdeep Borehole was an incredible undertaking that was appreciated by most all
of the people of Russia.
In 1987, the country printed a number of stamps commemorating the drilling team's effort.
This is a picture of a massive rig similar the one the Russian team used to bore deep
into the Earth's crust.
It was so heavy—and so dangerous—that all it took was one wrong move from a driller
for the team to have been crushed under the weight of the steel.
Controlling the massive rig required several men at a time, and even then it was still
often a struggle.
The rig would sometimes jerk to one side, and the team had to be ready to reposition
its massive arm at a moment's notice.
This was the superstructure where the Kola Superdeep Borehole was located during the
active digging period.
The massive tower that loomed over the water was actually home to the enormous drilling
rig.
The end goal of the drilling project was to reach a depth of 49,000 feet into the Earth's
crust.
There were several holes dug that branched off of the main hole, and the deepest branch,
called SG-3, reached a depth of an impressive 40,230 feet in 1989.
In 1992, although the Russian team was still about 9,000 feet away from their goal, the
drilling came to an abrupt end due to dangerous conditions.
The temperature at such a depth was much higher than the team planned for—almost 600 degrees
Fahrenheit—and it made drilling impossible.
Although the drilling came to complete stop, the entire project wasn't officially shut
down until 2005.
Unfortunately, in 2008, all of the facilities and the superstructure were scrapped and dismantled.
Even though the buildings were abandoned, visitors can still walk among the ruins and
imagine what life was like during the epic race to the center of the planet.
It's a fascinating place to visit, but it's also unfortunate this grand structure was
simply left to rot.
If you do happen to visit the ruins of the building on the Kola Peninsula, you might
not even notice the actual borehole itself.
All that remains is a small, nine-inch steel cap that covers the surface opening of the
hole, which has since been dubbed the "Hole to Hell".
Even though the Russian team never reached their goal of 49,000 feet, the drilling didgive
the scientific world some major discoveries.
Scientists now know a bit more about the planet's structure, and microscopic plankton fossils
were even discovered at the bottom of the hole.
The race to reach the center of the Earth was an exciting and intriguing time for the
world.
In the end, the goal was never reached—but at least the scientific community benefited
from the efforts!
Though defunct, this phenomenal structure still stands as a reminder of one project
that had the world on the edge of its seat.

As the government was shut down on Friday something else shutdown as well.
It will make Democrats even angrier than they already are.
The Trump administration rescinded guidance from the former Obama administration which
made it difficult for states to hinder Planned Parenthood funding.
The guidance was worded such that it warned states that ending Medicaid funding for Planned
Parenthood or various other healthcare service providers that provide abortions services
would be against the federal law.
The former administration made the argument that the laws surrounding Medicaid only allowed
states to bar providers from the program if the providers were not able to provide or
perform covered services or if they were unable to bill payment for those services.
President Trump rescinded the guidance in the form of a letter to Medicaid directors.
In the letter, he argued that the guidance was nothing more than President Obama's
attempts to favor and give preference to abortion rights advocates such as Planned Parenthood.
Charmaine Yoest, assistant Health and Human Services said Friday morning in a conference
call, "Reinstating the pre-2016 standards frees
up states to once again decide for themselves what reasonable standards they use to protect
Medicaid programs and their beneficiaries.
This is part of the Trump administration's effort to roll back regulations the Obama
administration put out to radically favor abortion."
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion group in
Washington, D.C. said in response, "President Trump and his administration
have taken … an important step toward getting American taxpayers out of funding the abortion
industry, especially Planned Parenthood.
Finish what this pro-life administration has started by defunding Planned Parenthood."
States such as Texas have attempted to ban Planned Parenthood from the Medicaid programs
in the state.
However, under law they were blocked by the Obama administration.
Now, rescinding this Obama-era guidance won't automatically allow states to ban Planned
Parenthood from their Medicaid programs but it signals the possibility it could happen
as well as the administration's support for it.
The Hill reported, "Texas submitted a request to the Trump
administration last year requesting permission to bar Planned Parenthood from its Medicaid
program, but the administration has not yet responded.
Approval from the administration would likely spark similar efforts in other conservatives
states but also would encourage legal challenges.
Planned Parenthood on Friday said rescinding the guidance would effectively encouraging
states to block the organization from state Medicaid programs.
"They couldn't get the votes to pass it in Congress, so now they are pushing states
to try and block care at Planned Parenthood," said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president
for Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
"Without Planned Parenthood, many of our patients would lose access to health care
altogether — either because there are no other providers in their community or because
other clinics cannot serve all of our patients."
The administration has already taken several actions in President Trump's first year
in office supporting its anti-abortion stance.
In April, Trump signed legislation that nullified an Obama-era rule that effectively barred
state and local governments from withholding federal funding for family planning services
to groups that provide abortions.
The announcement on Friday comes the same day as the March for Life, an annual march
against abortion in Washington, D.C. Trump is set to speak at the march live via video,
the first president to do so.
Also set to speak at the event are House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and GOP Reps. Jaime Herrera
Beutler (Wash.) and Chris Smith (N.J.)"
While Reuters reported, "The U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS) officials also said the department was issuing a new regulation aimed at protecting
healthcare workers' civil rights based on religious and conscience objections.
The regulation protects the rights of healthcare workers from providing abortion, euthanasia,
and sterilization, the officials said during a media call with reporters.
On Thursday, HHS said it was creating a new division that would focus on conscience and
religious objections, a move it said was necessary after years of the federal government forcing
healthcare workers to provide such services.
HHS will issue a letter on Friday to state Medicaid offices rescinding 2016 guidance
that the Obama administration gave after states including Indiana had tried to defund abortion
providers such as Planned Parenthood.
"You are watching a struggle over abortion politics," said Robin Wilson, a professor
at University of Illinois College of Law.
"In a sense you're allowing state Medicaid regulators, through regulation, to reopen
a whole can of worms around women's health."
Wilson said the impact could be immediate in states which, before the Obama-era guidance,
had been working to effectively defund or limit funding to providers such as Planned
Parenthood, which provide abortions but bill them separately so that they are not paid
for by Medicaid.
Dawn Laguens, executive vice president for the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said the
move encourages states to block access to care at Planned Parenthood.
"The law is clear: it is illegal to bar women from seeking care at Planned Parenthood.
Longstanding protections within Medicaid safeguard every person's right to access care at their
qualified provider of choice," Laguens said in a statement."
In reality what President Trump has done is genius.
Because with the government shutdown nobody is talking about this latest development with
Medicaid and Planned Parenthood.
This has gone relatively unnoticed and unreported on and even when it is reported on it is not
being discussed.
There is no doubt the President has been doing this all along.
While people are focusing on stupid things or the big headline catcher of the moment,
he is secretly doing the most important things behind closed doors.

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer led the fight to shut down the government over immigration,
but two videos from the past are coming back to haunt him after his true feelings on the
topic are revealed.
It's no secret that Schumer isn't a fan of the President, but going so far as to shut
down the government over people who aren't even supposed to be here is taking things
too far.
Schumer admitted as much during an interview with ABC back in 2013, when he said such a
move would cause "chaos."

over amnesty for illegals.

"They are playing with fire," said Schumer, "and we are happy to negotiate, but we don't

Speaker Boehner comes in and he says, basically, it's sort of like this; someone comes into
your house and takes you wife and kids hostage then says, 'let's negotiate over the price
of your house," explained Schumer.
"You know, we could do the same thing on immigration," he said.
"We believe strongly in immigration reform, so we could say we're shutting down the
government, we're not going to raise the debt ceiling until you pass immigration reform."
"But it would be governmental chaos," he said.
That's interesting to say the least.
It's amazing what five years and a new President will do to these guys, isn't it?
Now, if you find that video hypocritical, wait until you watch the next one, where Schumer
admits even the left's Orwellian language regarding illegals is damaging to our nation,
and that people who enter the country are, in fact, illegal aliens.
The kicker?
He says, verbatim, "illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who enter
the U.S. legally."

"People who enter the United States without our permission are illegal aliens," he said.
"Illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who enter the U.S. legally."
Here's the best part; Schumer harshly criticized the use of the phrase "undocumented worker"
instead of "illegal aliens," because "we convey a message that their government is
not serious about combatting illegal immigration."
"Which the American people overwhelmingly oppose," added Schumer.

Not too long ago, he opposed both amnesty and open borders, but one he and his party
realized they were basically like free voters, he jumped on that bandwagon fast than people
fell in love with the Dallas Cowboys after they won three consecutive Super Bowls.
