Money For Nothing | Mark Knopfler Songbook | TAB | Lesson 33 - Duration: 16:54.
Boy, this is fun.
Money For Nothing riff is
another example of this kind of duality
like in the Walk Of Life riff, when on
the one hand you have this complex
fingerpicking going, but on the other hand,
not only this riff works as an intro, it also is
a part of the verse, the chorus and
the outro as well, it goes through the whole
song all the way form beginning to end,
which means it's meant to be played while singing.
Playing and singing at the same time is a pretty
demanding task, especially when you have to
play it live not for a crowd of a thousand,
but sometimes for a crowd of a billion
(I'm talking about LiveAid).
More on singing later.
So unless what's you're playing has a strict and
simple pattern it's too easy to mess it up.
And Money For Nothing riff has a simple
pattern, which Mark describes in his
A Life In Songs documentary, let's watch.
So what he's saying is that the basic pattern of
the song is his signature
thumb, upstroke, downstroke and upstroke
move on two strings.
It's just four steps,
looks easy enough, right?
The interesting part is
when he talks about blocking strings.
The riff is a call and response melody in 8 bars,
as in Why Aye Man and What It Is, both of which
is also an 8 bars call and response riffs.
You should be able to sing it and to play it
as a single note line at any given time.
And it starts on an off-beat, which can be
tricky right away.
It starts with blocked strings,
strings 4 and 3.
Remember this pattern?
It starts with
the 2 last moves.
With the thumb hitting the first beat.
It can be slide, muted strings, muted and
open strings, open strings, or it can be just a rest.
Now the riff itself.
First two notes is thumb, index and middle on
two strings and then a downstroke.
This is crucial, because so many people mess
this part up by playing like this…
Then an upstroke, hammer-on to the 7th fret with
the thumb at the same time.
To an upstroke.
Then optional thumb and index fingers on the
4th string, downstroke, upstroke, thumb.
Slide to the 3rd position, upstroke, mute.
Now it's an upstroke and mute with the
thumb on two strings.
This thumb stroke is a very
strong one, almost like a downstroke.
The end of the call is more straightforward,
it's open strings upstroke, then another upstroke
and mute on the downstroke, to the muted upstroke.
All still in the 3rd position.
Now in the 1st position
it's a Bb power chord and the thumb, mute,
to C power chord.
To downstroke and upstroke.
See, the original pattern is all over the place,
so Mark is definitely right about that.
The response starts the same, on an off-beat,
only going down to this Bb here, with an upstroke
and thumb, then upstroke again, and a hammer-on.
To another upstroke.
It's three upstrokes in a row.
By the way, fingering in a typical Mark's fashion
is a very wide one, using 1st and 2nd fingers
on 5th and 7th frets here, adding the 4th finger
up on the 8th fret.
Reminds me of a double bass
where they play by ignoring the ring finger because
of the hugeness of the neck.
In Mark's case it's also
the hugeness of the neck.
But I like this fingering anyway.
Also, in the beginning of the riff it's these
two fingers and a pretty compact shape.
So we're going up in terms of the difficulty.
The riff continues with a thumb here.
Upstroke, pull-off, upstroke.
Then
downstroke, upstroke and thumb.
So it's 5 upstrokes in a row, I just realised that.
The ending is like before.
These power chords also
stays rhythmically the same, only
the root changes to F and G.
This is a lot of information.
Let's recap and play it as
slow as a human being can possibly play this riff.
Before I tackle the rest of the song,
I'd like to point out that all these harmonics
is purely an accidental stuff and you may like
it or not, but it just happens, I don't think they
were planned out and just happened in the studio
at the moment.
Oh, and this part, too.
Who knows what they did.
The verse is difficult to describe, because here
the original pattern is king.
It's just a bunch of
open strings, power chords and mutes all thrown
under the wheels of this pattern.
The song goes…
On the second part of the verse here goes
the riff in all of its glory.
And this is so difficult
to play and sing at the same time.
When you know the riff inside out, don't try to sing
yet, but very slowly check all the key words and
corresponding beats.
See, "that's" falls on this note.
"On" falls on this note,
"little" falls on that one and so on.
The microwave ovens part is Eb power chord,
going to Bb power chord, to Eb power chord again,
now the F one.
And here it's the second part of the riff.
Also very hard to sing.
To C, D and E power chords.
To add even more power, here's an old trick
of Mark's—add a thumb over.
Here's the main
part of the song completely again, guitar only.
Soloing-wise the song is very pleasing for
jamming along because it's 99% G Minor pentatonic
and it's a very "guitaristic" key.
Occasionally there's
this distinct E from the C Major chord and it's pretty
much the only thing that can change.
But let me tell you, this is fun.
From 33 songs I learned so far
in terms of fun this one takes the cake.
So the next time you'll watch Mark playing
Money For Nothing, just appreciate the amount
of work he put in each performance.
With songs like that you can't just go and play
it with 50-50 chance, it's hard work, and it's only
playing the song, imagine writing something like that.
This is working.

10 Most Real-Life Vampire Cases Ever Reported #emystery - Duration: 8:15.
The story of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for the classic vampire tale, Dracula, is
one that most people are familiar with.
But while it might be based on a real-life historical figure,
chances are that Vlad himself was not an immortal being who survived solely on the blood of
the living.
Still, that doesn't mean there weren't real vampires out there.
In fact, the stories of vampires who may have actually roamed the Earth are even more unsettling
than the works of fiction we all know and love.
Once you learn about these 10 potentially real-life vampires, you'll never look at
a cemetery the same way ever again!
Petar Blagojevich.
In 1725, a certain Serbian peasant named Petar Blagojevich died.
Not really that remarkable of a story, right?
Just wait until you hear what happened after he died, because that's when things got
really strange.
According to the story, Petar reportedly crawled out of his grave and asked his son for food.
When his son, terrified, denied him, Petar murdered him and drank his blood.
In a panic, the villagers thrust a stake through Petar's heart once he had returned to his
grave.
That same year, another Serbian man named Arnold Paole claimed to have been bitten by
a Turkish vampire.
To cure the ill effects, he ate handfuls of dirt from the vampire's grave.
Unfortunately, that might not have been quite enough; three days later, Arnold died.
Then, four people came forward claiming he had emerged from his grave and bit them.
They all died shortly thereafter.
Eventually, the townspeople agreed to dig up Arnold's body and examine it.
When they did, they found his eyes open and blood pouring from every orifice.
They cut off his head and set him on fire to make sure he couldn't strike again.
Myslata of Blau was a humble and simple shepherd from the 14th century who lived in a small
village in what is now the Czech Republic.
Myslata died, but then began to reappear to villagers at night.
Those who saw him were doomed to die within eight days of his appearance.
Eventually they dug up his remains and drove a stake through his heart—but it did nothing!
So, they dug him up again and tried driving stakes all over his entire body, which made
him roar in pain before finally dying for good.
In 1582, Johannes Cuntius, a civic official with an unfortunate surname from the Czech
town of Pentsch, died tragically when a horse kicked him in the head.
He was rushed to his death bed, but things only got worse when a black cat jumped up
on his bed.
This was considered to be a terrible omen.
After his death, villagers started seeing him wandering around at night giving off an
unholy and disgusting aroma.
To put a stop to it, they dug up his body, chopped off his head, set it on fire and ground
it to ash, leaving his grave empty.
Thankfully, this seems to have kept Johannes from returning to stink
Countess Elizabeth Bathory.
Born in Transylvania in 1560, Elizabeth had it all: She was a noblewoman with good looks
and plenty of money to throw around.
She was even engaged at the age of 12 to Ferenc Nádasdy, a well-to-do gentleman of the day.
Ferenc and Elizabeth married in 1575, though Ferenc eventually died in 1604.
Left to her own devices, Elizabeth took to killing young virginal women so she could
bathe in their blood and drink it, believing it would keep her looking young
and beautiful forever.
Eventually she was made a prisoner in her own castle for these antics, though she was
never tried for her crimes.
She lived there alone until her death in 1614.
Vampire or not, that's pretty nuts.
The Alnwick Castle Vampire.
Alnwick Castle has stood in Northumberland, England, since 1096.
In the 12th century, it was recorded that the castle had its own vampire: a man from
Yorkshire who had been buried in the local cemetery.
The historian William de Newburgh recorded details of the case.
Apparently, the vampire was a hunchback who would perform fiendish deeds at night, upsetting
the local villagers.
They took matters into their own hands; they dug up his body and started hacking at him
with their spades.
When his body bled, they claimed this was proof he was a vampire, so they set his remains
on fire, effectively ending his reign of annoyance.
Sava Savanovic.
This malicious blood-sucking vampire was said to lurk by a water-powered mill on the banks
of the River Rogacica, in the village of Zarožje in Serbia.
When people came to use the mill, he would kill them and drink their blood.
Needless to say, the villagers were desperate to put a stop to this.
Unlike other stories, the villagers never actually succeeded in ending Savanoic's
reign of terror.
In 2012, however, the town considered reopening the mill as a tourist attraction.
Shockingly, the mill collapsed into a sinkhole shortly thereafter, giving Sava the last laugh
after all.
Jure Grando Alilovic.
Jure Alilovic was born in the town of Kringa, located in contemporary Croatia, in 1597.
When he died in 1656, it wasn't the end of him, though.
Instead, townsfolk claimed to have spotted him stalking the streets late at night.
Needless to say the people of the town of Kringa were terrified.
For 16 years it was said that if Jure knocked on your door at night, you would be doomed
to die not long after.
Eventually, the villagers finally worked up the courage to dig up his body and drive stakes
through it, but that didn't stop him!
They finally cut off his head with a wood saw, and that seemed to do the trick.
New England vampire epidemic.
In 1990, archaeologist Nick Bellantoni was excavating some colonial-era graves in the
town of Griswold, Connecticut.
All of the graves seemed pretty ordinary, until Nick noticed one strange plot.
In this plot, the skeleton had no head and its thigh bones were deliberately crossed.
Bellantoni discovered other plots where the bones had been treated in the same way.
In the process, he learned that there had been a vampire panic in New England in mid-19th
century.
The strange bones he found belonged to suspected vampires.
The Blandford Forum Vampire.
The tiny English town of Blandford is located not far from the popular country retreat of
Dorset.
However, the town was not always so sleepy!
Once, in 1762, a manservant named William Doggett ran off with his master's fortune.
Crushed by the shame, William took his own life later that year.
Death was not the end for William Doggett.
Villagers reported seeing him driving the streets at night in a ghostly carriage.
They also reported that he had developed a taste for human blood.
They dug up his grave, and their fears were confirmed: William's remains weren't even
touched by decay
Who knew that there were so many stories about alleged real-life vampires?
These are much scarier than the same old Dracula tale, especially the ones that were never
solved!
Maybe they are real.

San Martin Festival, Moreda, 2017. Pure Asturian culture! - Duration: 6:58.
Hello fellow travelers!
We just arrived at home from a festival that we enjoyed a lot!
We were in Moreda, a small village in the mining area of Asturias, where every November 11th
they celebrate the Feast of San Martín .
We ate, we danced, we drank, we met very interesting people and we learnt a lot about the Asturian customs.
Let's go!
The festival starts with the "puja", an auction of different pieces of bread. It's for charity,
so the money they earn goes to the Sociedad de Humanitarios for social projects.
We are here with Esperanza del Pueyo Argüelles, President of the
Sociedad de Humanitarios of San Martín.
What's the purpose of this society?
It was registered in 1905 although it existed previously.
It was created in a spirit of solidarity, to help citizens get things that they didn't have:
tap water, electricity, roads…
Today's festival marks the end of the year, in order to thank the Saint for everything achieved that year.
In fact, San Martín shared his cape with the poor.
Mar is wearings the typical Asturian dress. It's very beautiful!
These are two carved castanets, the denge vest…
These ribbons are called colonias. Your boyfriend gave them to you in order to show that you were engaged.
Then the apron and the waist pouch. Then the skirt, that is adjustable.
Below there is the refaxu. The more refaxus you wore, the richer you were.
Poor girls! So many layers!
The teacher was the most important part of the dance!
Andres, playing the bagpipes is supposed to be typical of Galicia. How did you decide to play the bagpipe?
Well, first of all, it's not true that the bagpipe is from Galicia. Let's just say that it's from the Celtic area.
I grew up with the Asturian bagpipe. I started to play when I was a child, I've been playing for the last 14 years
and, God willing, I hope I'll be playing for 14 or even more years.
Collard greens pot. In fact, this pot is just for me!
Anxel is an expert in the Asturian language. Asturian is not an official language, yet, but…
Yes, we are working to make it official and make sure that Asturian doesn't go extinct.
It's important that we maintain this cultural richness!
I'm going to ask you something… How do you say "Viajando a Nuestro Aire" in Asturian?
"Viaxando al debalu", traveling our way…
Yes, it perfectly summarizes the idea of this Youtube channel!
"Viaxando al debalu", traveling our way…
Before the cider goes to our head, it's the moment to introduce you to Felix.
He's a whiz at pouring cider and he's going to tell us the tricks to do it properly.
First you have to catch hold the bottle like this, with the pinky at the bottom.
Point the glass down…
Wow, ole ole! What do you think?
Up, up… Look at the glass!
Good, good! I didn't do so bad!
What do you think, guys? It was really fun, wasn't it?
If you enjoyed it, please, press "like" and share it with your friends.
We don't want to forget to thank our ambassadors of this festival,
who were Maite, Camilo and their group of friends. They treated us really well!
You know that you can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and that all our videos are posted
also on the website viajandoanuestroaire.com.
We'll see you in our next trip, don't miss it! Bye!

BREAKING!! ASSASSINATION Hit On TRUMP!! MK Today - Duration: 4:37.
BREAKING!!
ASSASSINATION Hit On TRUMP!!
The left's hate for President Trump is no secret to anyone in America.
For months liberals have lamented, protested, and schemed to have Trump removed from office
by any means necessary.
These threats have come from celebrities, politicians, and violent groups like Antifa
and Black Lives Matter as they continue to scream that Trump must be stopped.
Instead of these hateful individuals facing stiff punishment for inciting violence against
the sitting president, the mainstream media, and liberal politicians have remained virtually
silent.
Now, these violent threats have reached a fever pitch as more deranged liberals call
for President Trump's death on a daily basis.
So, it is no surprise that someone just offered thousands of dollars to assassinate Trump
on social media which has secret service on high alert.
What has made America the greatest country on earth has not only been our military prowess
but our freedoms that we were founded on.
One of the central tenets of our country has been the right of free speech and to speak
out against our government and protest when citizens feel slighted.
However, that free speech has taken a dangerous turn when thousands of Americans are abusing
that right with calls for violence and even murder towards President Trump.
Just over this weekend, Andrea Hudson offered $20,000 for anyone who was willing to murder
President Trump on Twitter.
Of course, when conservatives saw the message they quickly reported the offensive tweet,
and the account was suspended, but that will not stop this sort of sentiment to continue
considering that top Democrats have been calling for the death of Trump and conservatives for
months.
After Trump was elected, the hateful rhetoric against him only intensified with top Democrats
joining in on the chaos.
Former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch released a disturbing video with violent calls
to action to exact on a change in the country even if that meant bloodshed.
"We have always had to work to move this country forward to achieve the great ideals
of our Founding Fathers.
They've marched, they've bled, yes some of them have died.
This is hard.
Every good thing is.
We have done this before; we can do this again."
Then former Vice Presidential candidate Tim Kaine echoed that chilling sentiment as well
during an interview on MSNBC.
Mika Brzezinski, co-host of the television show, Morning Joe asked Kaine this following
question, and his answer was quite telling.
So, broad question about the future of the Democratic Party, especially given your firsthand
experience with what we've all been through.
There's so much going on here that we clearly see, you know, places where you — we can
criticize what the administration is doing, but how does the party rebuild?
How do you prevent overreach in a situation like this?
How do you prevent a continuation of the bubble in a situation like this, and how does the
party reclaim its reach across the country while fighting these battles?
And, here is Tim Kaine's response.
So, the way we get outside the bubble is we take advantage of this tremendous public outcry
against the administration.
What we've got to do is fight in Congress, fight in the courts, fight in the streets,
fight online, fight at the ballot box, and now there's the momentum to be able to do
this.
And we're not afraid of the popular outcry, we're energized by it, and that's going
to help us do our job and do it better.
So, with the apparent blessing of top Democrats calling for violence against the Trump administration
is it any surprise that hateful liberals would continue spouting their dirty fantasies online?
Not at all.
This hatred for President Trump and his policies has been carefully cultivated by the mainstream
media and liberal politicians as they peddle tales of bigotry and racism to the masses.
The dangerous rhetoric that these liberals have spouted for over a year has created an
atmosphere of paranoia, and it is not getting better any time soon.
These hateful individuals are so consumed with malice that they cannot see that they
are the ones who are the sole contributors to the divisive climate in our country.
It is now the time that those that promote any violence against the president is arrested
and thrown in jail.
The only way this sort of behavior will stop is when there are harsh consequences to their
actions.
It is one thing to speak out against policies you may not agree with, but it is quite another
to advocate for the death of a president, and that goes for both sides.
What do you think about this?
