Derek Carr _ derek carr injury update _ derek carr hurt _ Hot News USA - Duration: 10:28.

News feed : "Oakland quarterback Derek Carr's injury changes everything in the AFC"

The Oakland Raiders' record and playoff seed say they remain a serious contender to emerge as the AFC's representative in the Super Bowl.

Their quarterback situation now says otherwise.

Everything changed for the Raiders — and for the entire AFC ,

when quarterback and MVP candidate Derek Carr was hurt Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts.

Coach Jack Del Rio announced following the 33-25 triumph over the Colts that Carr suffered a broken fibula.

Carr will undergo surgery and is to be sidelined indefinitely, according to Del Rio.

The Raiders now turn to Matt McGloin at quarterback.

And it becomes that much more difficult to envision anyone in the AFC preventing the New England Patriots from reaching the Super Bowl.

Carr has been about as good this season as any NFL quarterback not named Tom Brady.

A convincing MVP argument can be made on Carr's behalf.

Are the Raiders done without him? Of course not.

They have many parts of a championship team still in place with their solid offensive line,

their dynamic receiving duo of Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree,

a productive running game, and a powerful defense led by Khalil Mack.

The Raiders, now 12-3, are right on the heels of the 13-2 Patriots for the AFC's best record.

They clinch the AFC West title and an opening-round postseason bye if the Kansas City Chiefs lose Sunday night to the Denver Broncos.

But could the Raiders, with McGloin at quarterback,

go to Foxborough, Mass., and win a playoff game?

They no longer have the quarterback to believe there's a realistic chance of that happening.

The Patriots moved a significant step closer to another Super Bowl title with Brady and Coach Bill Belichick on Saturday,

and that's mostly because of what happened in Oakland.

Derek Carr suffers broken fibula in win, out indefinitely.

Just when it seemed the Oakland Raiders were gaining momentum for a Super Bowl run,

they lost their MVP candidate and team leader to a season-ending injury.

Just hours after the Titans saw franchise quarterback Marcus Mariota go down with a fractured fibulain Tennessee's crushing loss to Jacksonville,

the Raiders' signal-caller suffered a similar fate.

Derek Carr suffered a broken fibula in the fourth quarter of Oakland's win over the Colts on Saturday.

Coach Jack Del Rio said Carr will likely undergo surgery on Sunday and is out indefinitely.

Carr later tweeted Saturday night, "I will bounce back and be on my feet in no time!

"..Thank you for all of the love that you Raider Nation showed me in that stadium today. I will be back. This is a team sport! So everything WE want is still out there for us!"

The timing is crushing. Carr had led the offense on five consecutive touchdown drives from the middle of the first quarter through the latter portion of the third quarter.

The Raiders appeared to be cruising toward the AFC West title,

a first-round bye and even a shot to steal the No. 1 seed -- should the Patriots lose in Miami next week.

The sack by Trent Cole that trapped Carr's ankle underneath his body was the first time the quarterback had been touched all afternoon.

Preseason sensation Matt McGloin came on as Carr's replacement and figures to keep the job throughout the playoffs.

Undrafted out of Penn State in 2013, McGloin has recorded a 58.2 completion rate at 6.9 yards per attempt for a 11:11 TD-to-INT ratio and 75.9 passer rating in 12 career games with six starts.

The Raiders' new starter clinched Saturday's victory with a clutch third-down conversion to Amari Cooper,

keeping Andrew Luck off the field and draining the clock in an eight-point game.

Although there's plenty of reason to believe McGloin won't be in over his head as Carr's replacement,

the difference in arm talent and accuracy between the two quarterbacks is immense.

To survive in January, the Raiders will have to lean more heavily on a three-headed backfield,

that is hitting its stride with rookie DeAndre Washington adding a jolt of playmaking ability the past two weeks.

While it's conceivable that McGloin can lead the Raiders to a playoff victory over another emergency quarterback such as Miami's Matt Moore or Houston's Tom Savage,

it's going to take a Herculean effort by the entire team to get past AFC favorite New England or surging Pittsburgh.

Quarterback Derek Carr suffered a broken right fibula in the Raiders' 33-25 win over the Indianapolis Colts that in all likelihood will end his season.

Carr was sacked by Colts outside linebacker Trent Cole early in the fourth quarter with the Raiders up comfortably 33-14.

Carr's ankle twisted as he went down and he immediately knew the seriousness.

"As soon as I got out there, he said, 'I think it's broke'," coach Jack Del Rio relayed.

"I think most athletes have a pretty good idea when something's going on with their body."

Del Rio said Carr will have surgery Monday and is out indefinitely.

Recovery time for a broken fibula can be as minimal as 6-8 weeks and the Super Bowl is six weeks away,

but it would take an incredibly optimistic recovery and the Raiders to rally behind backup Matt McGloin.

Raiders left tackle Donald Penn was upset with himself after the game as it was his defender who got to Carr.

That was the first sack Penn has allowed all season.

"I've been great all year," Penn said.

"I don't know how. I was engaged with my guy and took another step and my foot just slipped from up under me…"

"..I wish I could have that (expletive) play back because I've been blocking great all year."

The loss of Carr to a team that has an AFC West title and first round playoff bye within reach was tough to swallow.

"It feels like a loss," linebacker Bruce Irvin said. "We lost our leader."

Derek Carr is out indefinitely after suffering a broken right fibula in the Oakland Raiders' 33-25 win against the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, coach Jack Del Rio said after the game.

Carr is scheduled to undergo surgery on Sunday. Del Rio said he had already been ruled out for the regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos.

"It feels like we lost the game," linebacker Bruce Irvin told reporters after the game. "We lost out leader."

Early in the fourth quarter Saturday, Carr's leg appeared to be pinned when he was sacked by Colts outside linebacker Trent Cole.

Carr had to be helped off the field by trainers and was unable to put any weight on the leg when leaving the game.

"It's very sad," left tackle Donald Penn said.

"I'm very disappointed in myself because it was my guy that got him.

"...I've been great all year. I was engaged with my guy,.."

"..I took another step and my foot just slipped from up under me..."

"...I wish I could have that play back."

After being examined on the sidelines, he was later taken off in a cart.

Backup Matt McGloin replaced Carr in the game.

"We have faith in Matt and the weapons around him," Irvin said.

The Raiders held a 33-14 lead at the time of Carr's injury.

Carr suffered a right pinkie finger injury earlier in the season but wore a glove and took snaps out of the shotgun formation rather than under center.

Oakland can secure the AFC West and a first-round bye if the Kansas City Chiefs lose to the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

The Oakland Raiders were cruising along on Saturday,

leading the Indianapolis Colts 33-14, and suddenly that didn't matter at all.

Quarterback Derek Carr was suddenly on the field, grabbing his right leg and screaming in pain.

He was sacked in the fourth quarter with the Raiders up big,

motioned for the athletic trainers,

then was yelling in pain. He was helped off the field and couldn't put any weight on the leg.

It appeared Carr said, "it's broken,"

as he was down on the field. CBS reported that Carr's shoe was cut off on the trainer's table,

then he was carted back to the locker room.

On the play, pass rusher Trent Cole hit Carr,

whose right foot got stuck in the turf. Carr's body spun around with Cole landing on him.

Cameras caught Raiders owner Mark Davis voicing his displeasure of the play.

You can try reading his lips.

Carr has been the driving force for the Raiders, who are 12-3. Carr had 25 touchdowns and six interceptions this season,

heading into Saturday's game. Oakland is in first place,

but the 10-4 Kansas City Chiefs are right behind them and own the tiebreaker.

Last week the Raiders clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2002.

But the good vibes from this season faded away in a hurry when their quarterback was being helped off the field.
