Hello everyone, this is Noor Al-Ansari
and in this video I'll talk about Google drive case study
So, let's talk about google drive and some of it's history
Google drive got Launched on April 24, 2012
Google Drive allows users to store files on their servers, synchronize files across devices, and share files
Google Drive encompasses Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, an office suite that permits collaborative editing of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, forms, and more.
Files created and edited through the office suite are saved in Google Drive.
Google Drive offers users 15 gigabytes of free storage,
with 100 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, 10 TB and 20 TB
in addition to 30 terabytes offered through optional paid plans.
in addition to 30 terabytes offered through optional paid plans.
Files uploaded can be up to 5 terabytes in size. Users can change privacy settings for individual files and folders, including enabling sharing with other users or making content public.
Let's talk about some history of google drive
So, Google Drive is a key component of G Suite, Google's monthly subscription offering for businesses and organizations.
As part of select G Suite plans
Drive offers unlimited storage
advanced file audit reporting
enhanced administration controls, and greater collaboration tools for teams.
As for September 2015
It was estimated that there will be over 1 million organizational paying users
And in March 2017
There were 800 million active users
Finally, in May 2017, over two trillion files stored on the service.
Let's talk about the technology
So, to get started with google drive
the end user must create or sign in to a Google account.
Then, the user types "drive.google.com" into his or her browser.
"My Drive" will automatically appear
which contains uploaded or synced files and folders
as well as Google Sheets, Slides and Docs
Then, the user can either upload files or create files in Google Drive.
Alternatively, the end user can download a Google Drive application to one or more devices.
& a Google Drive folder will appear along with other folders in each device's file system.
Files that the user adds to one folder
are available through a Google Drive web app or the Google Drive folder on each device.
When the end user creates a file or folder, the user becomes the owner by default.
then, the owner can control the level of visibility to public or privately share the document
and transfer ownership to other Gmail addresses
also, The owner can also regulate permissions for both folders and files
& allow access to some other people
and the access levels is divided into 3 levels, which is "can edit," "can comment" and "can view."
in terms of the service
Google Docs, slides and sheets make up to google drive office suite
Google doc is a word processor
and Slide is a presentation
whereas google sheet is a spreadsheet program
Respectively, they can be compared to
Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel
Previously, Google Drive had desktop apps for Windows and macOS
However, the support for those ends in May 2018
And they will launch a desktop Backup App
that allows you to Synchronize the copies
In terms of the business model of Google drive
Google's business model is based around advertising
and their user agreement states that
they have the right to scan all your content and sell information about you to anyone.
In terms of competition
there are 2 major competitors
which is iCloud
And suprisingly
Apple folks will still think that Google Drive useful.
because iCloud only syncs files that exist within their applications like iTunes and iPhoto.
and there is now a sync folder for general purpose uses
and in terms of prices
Google drive is cheaper and allows more storage
Google drive and iCloud can be used all in same devices
you could find reasons to use both
if you're an iphone user
because iCloud does a good job at keeping up with your contacts
iphone apps and music
and
Talking about dropbox
It is probably the most similar competitor
because it has easy sharing and similar features such as web apps and
seamless device
and PC integration are some of its strengths
However, google drive as a whole ha a good interface
and allows the user to edit documents and download apps
& edit images
Dropbox only extends file sharing allows easy syncing.
and Dropbox costs more but has less features.
In terms of advantages and disadvantages
the advantages is that it allows easy access
Google drive allows you to edit
to access with various devices
and it's easy to search for your files
view anytime and share your files with friends
and it's free! with 5GB of storage
disadvantages that hackers can hack or remove your important data
and the uploading speed can be a bit problematic
So, in conclusion
Google drive is a very successful product
in terms of even comparing it with other companies
it still seems a better competitor
and it is highly used around the world
Thank you for listening, I hope you enjoyed!
