- [Wade Owen Watts Voiceover] There's nowhere left to go,
nowhere,
except the OASIS.
- There are movies that Steven had asked us to watch,
and there are movies, there were direct references
in our film, so we all went back and watched
some of those films together, and that was super fun.
- Google was a dictionary for it, so when you're reading
a book that has words that you don't understand in it,
Just reading the script and being like,
don't understand that reference
I'm gonna do a little bit of Googling there.
- He asked Olivia and I to watch a movie called,
"His Girl Friday", which he wanted us to watch
because he wanted us to look at the dynamic
between the male and female lead in that movie,
and their dialog is very fast paced.
- I've seen the movie twice now,
and I think I need to see it for a third time
to absorb all of the references,
there's still references that either Tye, or Steven,
or Lena say, "Oh, did you see that" and I'm like,
no, completely missed that - Yeah, but that's everyone,
but you pick up on some references that I haven't,
so this film is definitely one of those films
that I'm pretty sure that you're gonna notice
something new every time you watch it.
This is really difficult adaptation because
Steven's the first one to say that there are ten,
twelve, fifteen movies inside of Ready Player One.
And I think really Zak Penn, and Ernie Cline,
and Steven Spielberg putting their heads together,
and because there's so much
they had to condense into this film,
they've done it in such an elegant and graceful way.
- Steven has took the essence of Ready Player One,
and the themes of Ready Player One and transferred that
into a major motion picture,
and so inevitably within adaptations
there's gonna be some different ideas
and some things that are left out,
but hopefully I hope the audience feels
that we've encapsulated the story.
Our characters are sponges for information,
so I think we connect on an intellectual level at first,
trying to garner information on James Halliday,
and how to win the egg and get the keys.
And then realizing our love for Halliday,
and also our similar interests, I think, is what made us
a really great team and wanting us
to clan up together for the greater good.
- And also, I think it's important to mention
outside the film, we spent two weeks together
before we actually started shooting rehearsing this dance
we have to do together in The Distracted Globe
when we meet up with each other.
Not only that, but we had tons of rehearsals together,
stunt rehearsals and getting familiar
with the motion-capture environment.
So, not only just Olivia and I got to know each other
very well, but the whole, the High Five,
that's what they're called in the movie,
those five characters and the five actors, really,
we all got really, really, really close
before shooting, and I think it shines through in the movie.
So we shot everything that happens inside of the OASIS,
which is the virtual world that 60% of the movie
takes place in, we shot all motion-capture.
So we had, ILM had developed the very raw versions
or mock-up environments of the environments
that we would be walking around in,
in the final version of the film,
and we had a tool that was basically
we could hop into a tethered oculus
that was spatially tracking within the motion-capture volume
so you could have a three-dimensional perspective
on that environment and all the avatars
walking around, which was super helpful.
And I think we were the first film
to actually do that in real time.
- But then we took off the headset and we interacted
in just the white volume and all we had to go off
was what we just saw, and our imagination
and our connection between each other,
but there was no acting with VR goggles.
- Yeah, Steven could,
he could choose his shots in a virtual environment,
I think in the headset, but for us,
we couldn't perform without our faces.
