The Apple Watch Series 3 debuted last September and brought a host of new improvements to
the most-popular wearable around.
The Cupertino-based company's newest watch offering allowed users to make and receive
calls with the flick of their wrist thanks to cellular connectivity and featured an S3
dual-core chip for even snappier performance.
But with Google tipped to enter the smartwatch market, Apple could be forced to bring a host
of radical changes to its wearable to fend off its huge competitor.
Rumours of a Google Pixel-branded watch stem from tipster Evan Blass who cited a "reliable
source".
If true, this could mark the first Android smartwatch made by Google itself.
The tech giant is already responsible for the Wear OS software harnessed by wearables
from other manufacturers such as LG and Huawei.
Google designed its Pixel line of phones in addition to the Google Home itself, potentially
offering fans a tantalising idea of what they can expect the build quality of a watch to
be like.
Other rumours have pointed towards a Google Pixel wearable in three versions.
This could allow for two models in different sizes plus a separate one with cellular capabilities,
much like the Apple Watch Series 3.
Google Assistant will surely play a prominent role in the functionality of the new device
- the technology has already defined itself as the best and most reliable virtual assistant
around.
The Silicon Valley behemoth also appears set to challenging Apple on an engineering front.
Qualcomm has already confirmed it is working with Google to create a new wearable chip
to power future smartwatches.
If Google announces a watch, it would make sense for it to do so in October where it
appears set to announce the Google Pixel 3.
Evan Blass insisted a "hardware event" will take place towards the end of the year and
will play host to some huge announcements.
If Google prices its reported smartwatch at a premium, it could retail for a similar cost
to the base line Apple Watch Series 4.
A new look for the Apple Watch could help to boost sales in a year Google is tipped
to challenge the tech giant in the wearable market.
