UK foreign minister attacks Google over 'child abuse content'

UK foreign minister attacks Google over 'child abuse content'.

British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt accused Google on Thursday of abandoning its moral values by failing to remove child abuse content while launching a version of its search engine in China that will block some websites.

The British government has repeatedly criticised online platforms such as Twitter, YouTube and Facebook for failing to remove abusive material or sexual content posted online even after they were notified.

"Seems extraordinary that Google is considering censoring its content to get into China but won't cooperate with UK, US.

in removing child abuse content," Hunt said on Twitter.

"They used to be so proud of being values-driven." Alphabet's Google plans a search engine in China that will block some search terms and websites, two sources told Reuters earlier this month, in a move that could mark its return to a market it abandoned eight years ago on censorship concerns.

Google said in a statement they agreed with Hunt that child sexual abuse was "abhorrent and must be removed, that's why we co-operate with governments to fight child sexual abuse online".

Britain, the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand invited major technology companies to attend a meeting on tackling child abuse and extremism on their websites, but the firms declined to attend, the Daily Mail reported on Thursday.

Google said they did offer to send an executive to the conference.

In January, Prime Minister Theresa May used an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos to say investors should use their financial power to force internet firms into taking more responsibility for stopping militants and paedophiles using their platforms.

Google, which quit China's search engine market in 2010, has been actively seeking ways to re-enter China where many of its products are blocked by regulators.

Leading human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have urged Google not to bow to censorship demands in China because by doing so, they allege, the company would be complicit in the repression of freedom of speech.

Search terms about human rights, democracy, religion and peaceful protests will be among the words blacklisted in the search engine app, which The Intercept website said had already been demonstrated to the Chinese government.

The project, code-named "Dragonfly", has been under way since the spring of 2017, the news website said. .

Sanctions on N. Korea serve to achieve denuclearization of Korean Peninsula: van Oosterom - Duration: 0:41.

The UN Security Council's sanctions committee says... the sanctions on North Korea serve

a very clear political purpose -- to achieve the full and irreversible denuclearization

of the Korean peninsula.

Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom told reporters on Thursday... that the sanctions are being

implemented in a way that does not lead to negative humanitarian consequences.

He added... that the committee has worked with many countries on North Korea in recent

sessions,... which led to several accomplishments on humanitarian issues.

Earlier in August,... the Security Council's sanctions committee for the first time decided

to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to the country.

UN urges Japan to solve 'comfort women' issue - Duration: 0:52.

A UN committee on discrimination has urged the Japanese government to adopt a victim-centered

approach toward the problem of Japan's past wartime sexual slavery.

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination published the report on Thursday,...

saying that the Japanese government did "not take a fully victim-centered approach."

It added that the 2015 agreement between Japan and the South Korean government did not determine

"unequivocal responsibility" for the human rights violations committed against the so-called

"comfort women."

The committee discussed related issues for the first time in four years on August 16th

and 17th.

Although the Commission's recommendations are not binding,... it is customary for the

country receiving the recommendations to report before the next session what actions it is

taking or plans to take in response.

Denuclearization talks stall as North Korea goes strong on what U.S. can offer - Duration: 2:48.

U.S. President Donald Trump is said to have cancelled his Secretary of State's trip to

the North Korean capital this week after he received a letter from Pyongyang, which in

previous reports had been described as belligerent.

More details on that letter have been leaked, and it seems it was Pyongyang that implied

don't come unless you have something for us.

Strong words, but where is their confidence coming from?

Trump says it's China.

We have our expert guest in the studio to further discuss this, but first our foreign

ministry correspondent Lee Ji-won has this report.

It appears U.S. President Donald Trump didn't have a choice but to call off his Secretary

of State's fourth visit to Pyongyang as Washington had "nothing to offer" the regime.

Citing an unnamed government official, Reuters reported Thursday that the tone of the secret

letter Kim Yong-chol, vice chairman of North Korea's Workers' Party's central committee,

sent to the U.S,... was that if Washington is not willing to give something, then Pompeo

shouldn't come.

The regime has been asking the U.S. to declare an end to the Korean War, while the Trump

administration has been pushing Pyongyang for a inventory of its nuclear and missile

programs and other military assets.

The senior official added that the North Koreans seem to be thinking the U.S. is not doing

enough,... which appears to back up a report by U.S.-based media outlet Vox, which said

President Trump promised North Korean leader Kim Jong-un a peace treaty sometime soon after

their summit in June.

But the Trump administration continues to insist denuclearization has to take place

before anything else.

Amid concerns over the stalemate, the U.S. remains firm on its restrictions on the regime.

A U.S. State Department official said the department has extended its ban on Americans

traveling to North Korea by another year,... until August 31st 2019.

The reason given for the ban is the concern over the threat of arrest.

U.S. law stipulates that travel restrictions on Americans may be imposed if "there is imminent

danger to the public health or physical safety of U.S. travelers in the country or area."

But it's known that "individuals who wish to travel to or within North Korea for extremely

limited purposes," and whose travel is in the U.S. national interest, can apply for

a "special validation" from the State Department.

There will also be exceptions if the trip is justified by "compelling humanitarian considerations."

The ban was imposed in September last year after the death of American student Otto Warmbier,

who was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor by the North after allegedly trying to steal

a propaganda sign.

Pres. Moon insists necessity for Constitutional revision in light of Constitutional Court's 30th - Duration: 0:58.

President Moon also attended a ceremony Friday commemorating the South Korean Constitutional

Court's thirtieth anniversary, where which he brought up the need to revise the Constitution.

Here's what he said this morning.

"The Constitution is not flawless or everlasting.

Its interpretation is not set in stone nor is it error-free.

I believe the interpretation of the Constitution constantly evolves in accordance with the

spirit of the times and the constitutional consciousness of the people."

Earlier this summer, the Blue House wanted to hold a referendum on amending the Constitution

alongside the June local elections, but that proposal failed in Parliament.

S. Korea's industrial output rises 0.5% m/m in July, but capital investment falls for five.. - Duration: 1:57.

Statistics Korea has released its data on industrial output for July,... which shows...

a slight improvement from last month.

But facilities investment continues to fall.

Kim Hyesung has the details.

Korea's industrial production went up zero-point-five percent on-month in July, making a rebound

from June's fall of zero-point-seven percent.

Output in mining and manufacturing improved, offsetting a drop in construction.

"Production in mining and manufacturing went up zero-point-four percent on-month.

Production in autos dropped but transportation equipment and chemical goods output went up.

Regarding transportation equipment, companies increased their workload in July to prepare

for the long vacation in August.

Chemical goods output went up on higher demand for cosmetic goods from Chinese tourists."

The average rate of manufacturing operations rose around one-percent to 74-point-three

percent.

Production in services stayed unchanged from last month, with a fall in financial services

being offset by an improvement in the science and IT services sector.

Retail sales, an indicator of consumption, rose again in June, going up half a percent

on higher demand for both durable and nondurable goods like cosmetics.

Facility investment, however, continued to nosedive, dropping zero-point-six percent

on-month in July.

It's the first time in 20 years that facility investment has fallen for five months in a

row.

Statistics Korea attributed the fall to a decline in machinery investment in the semiconductor

sector, saying it has started to slow down after the soaring investment seen from late

2016 to early this year.

In addition, construction investment has also dropped slightly.

Indicators showing the current and future economic outlook remain sluggish, eding down

zero-point-three percent, zero-point-two percent, respectively.

Kim Hyesung, Arirang News.
