Dylan Lewis: Why don't we switch gears and talk Android in Europe?

We got a recent ruling from the European Commission, basically looking at Google's Android practices

and deciding that they are anti-competitive. Evan, do you want to give us the rundown?

Evan Niu: The European Commission slapped Google with a pretty massive $5 billion fine,

which, of course, they're appealing. That'll make its way through the courts.

Maybe they settle, who knows.

The issue is, some of the things that Google does with Android are anti-competitive,

particularly how it has long paid device manufacturers to pre-install Google Apps and Google Play Store.

That gives them this huge advantage within the Android platform.

It really undermines the competitive nature of other companies that might want to compete in search.

There's a lot going on here.

When the decision was announced, Google CEO Sundar Pichai also suggested that this model

is going to have to change. The speculation was that they're going to start charging a licensing fee.

Now, that's actually kind of what's happening.

Google has now said that they will start charging manufacturers a licensing fee -- not for Android,

the platform itself, but specifically related to its suite of apps and services, which includes the Play Store.

The Play Store is a pretty huge piece there, because that's where you get all your apps and stuff.

It's a pretty big reversal, in terms of the economics of where the money goes.

Instead of them paying manufacturers, manufacturers now have to pay them.

And, of course, those companies will probably pass along those costs to consumers in the

form of higher prices. We've seen this in other computing form factors.

When you have one company that makes the operating system licenses it out, that generally leads

to higher prices, because those companies need to make that money back, and they typically

throw their own margin on top.

I think that has some pretty important implications with the Android ecosystem and the business model,

in Europe at least.

Lewis: The upshot for all of this is, short-term, it could mean that prices go up on Android

devices simply because manufacturers have to pay to access this stuff in a way that they haven't in the past.

Longer-term, theoretically, this leads to more competition.

The barriers to competition are a little bit lower for people providing apps in the space.

Niu: Right. It also depends on, are manufacturers going to really try to sell Android devices that

don't have Google Apps and services?

Maybe some will try, test the market, see if those devices can sell well.

If those devices can sell well, then certainly, consumers might prefer lower prices,

manufacturers prefer lower costs.

Actually, news broke today that the licensing fee is actually going to be pretty high.

Google had initially said that this fee would be pretty small and not too much to worry about.

I think that what they're doing is trying to put in the high fee as a way to incentivize

manufacturers to make other concessions. This fee is reportedly as high as $40, which is massive.

That's more than what Window's phones used to charge for its platforms, back when Windows

phones were a thing. That fee will vary based on country and device type.

It's as low as $3, but can go as high as $40.

Google will offer breaks if the manufacturer pre-installs Chrome and Google Search.

Pre-installing Chrome will also become a requirement for some of these revenue sharing agreements

they have around Search.

It's basically saying, "We're going to charge a ton of money, but we'll give you a break

if you basically keep pre-installing it." It's a roundabout way to more or less keep the status quo.

It presents a really strong financial incentive for them to still pre-install Chrome and Search,

which have always been Android's primary monetization strategy for Google.

Lewis: The reality is, the reason that the European Commission is so narrowly focused

in on Google is, it dominates this market.

It's dominant here in the United States, but I think within the top five largest European

countries, it has over 80% market share, something crazy like that.

Niu: Right. That's according to Kantar estimates.

The big five European markets, Android is huge, it's like 80% of the market.

Globally, of course, Android is huge, too. But, yeah, this decision does specifically relate to Europe.

They're such a huge player there and they dominate this market, and they have this massive

market power position where they can really undermine all competing search providers,

particularly on the mobile front.

Lewis: Right. Also, the core of it is, they make good products.

That's why people continue to use them. Yes, they are the default for so many of these Android devices.

They're packaged in in a way that makes it very easy for consumers to use.

The less friction you have there, the more likely they are to use those apps.

But a lot of people go out of their way -- on iPhones, even -- to use Google Apps

because they're pretty much top of the line for the industry.

Niu: Right. They also have those agreements with Apple, too, where they pay Apple for the default search spot.

To your point about removing friction, pre-installing this stuff is a huge advantage because a lot

of people, even if they really like Google apps and services, may not go out and install it themselves.

If you buy a new phone and it already has the stuff on there, it's a seamless thing,

it feeds straight into their search products and other services.

That's such a huge strategic benefit of having these things pre-installed.

Lewis: The big picture takeaway for this news is basically, Google is going to do everything

that it can to maintain the status quo, although they'll have to jump through a couple of hoops

to make that happen.

Niu: Right. That seems like how they're trying to approach it.

They don't want to give up any of these advantages they have, but at the same time, they have

to navigate this new, precarious legal position that they're in because of this antitrust decision.

If they restructure the way the model works, then they can maybe get away with it.

They did have to get rid of some of these other restrictions around what devices other people can sell.

Overall, on paper, it's a positive thing for consumers,

because theoretically it will create more choice, ultimately.

But if that turns out to result in higher prices, that's not a great thing.

To the extent that Google can keep things the way they are, maybe there's not that much change.

The most important Android phone - Duration: 6:57.

- We are 10 years into the Android era

and I've been talking a lot about how it's dominant now.

There's over two billion users

and it has over 80% worldwide market share.

Now, in a previous video,

we looked at why Android got started,

but this week, I have a different question.

How did Android get so big?

If you take yourself all the way back to 2009,

it was very much not a sure thing

that Android would become the king of mobile.

In fact, what you were looking at back then

was like a six or seven-horse race.

Far out in the lead was Symbian,

which was dominant in Europe

but almost nothing here in the US.

The iPhone was getting a little bit of traction,

BlackBerry was doing okay,

and Android was like a blip, like, a 4% blip.

Now, in hindsight, it's really easy to say

why Symbian and Windows Mobile and BlackBerry

and Linux and, yes, Linux phone existed,

and webOS, why they all crashed and burned.

They all happened for kind of different reasons

but today, I wanna focus on one of the biggest reasons

they all went down in flames instead of staying competitive

and that reason is.

- [Robotic Voice] Droid.

- More so than the G1,

this right here is the real Android OG

and there's a lot of really notable things

to talk about with this device.

First off, it was a big deal for Motorola,

which hadn't had a hit since the Razr flip phone,

and it was before the company fell on hard times

and then got bought by Google, and then got sold by Google,

and now, just kind of makes bog standard Android phones

now that it's owned by Lenovo.

No, this phone right here

with its little flip out thing here,

this was the big comeback, and oh my gosh, what a comeback.

It's hard to remember now

but this thing was the pinnacle of tech.

I mean, just look at the crazy angles on these things

and it had turn-by-turn directions in Google Maps,

which was very rare back then

and it launched with Android 2.0.

It had a very big screen, it had multiple buttons,

little five-way, removable battery, a whole bunch of stuff.

And if you didn't know,

Google had a hand in developing this phone.

I've even heard some Googlers referred to the Droid

as the unofficial first Nexus device,

even before the Nexus One in 2010.

This phone was metal.

It was metal as hell.

And that brings me to the real reason that the Droid

was the moment when Android started to get big,

and that's because of Verizon.

(suspenseful music) (robotic noise)

- What in the world is that?

(intense tune)

- You see, back in 2009, carriers had a lot more control

over what phones got on their networks

and they still did most of the marketing work on them.

And to be clear, I'm mostly talking about the US right now.

But the US was also kind of ground zero

for the smartphone wars.

Sure, the iPhone was getting big

but it was exclusive just to AT&T

after Verizon had turned it down.

So, Verizon was desperately looking

for something to compete with the iPhone.

Now, Verizon started this thing called the BlackBerry Storm,

which was a absolute dumpster fire of a device

with a big screen

that you're supposed to click down on to type.

It was really bad.

So, Verizon was looking around for the next big thing

and you know what?

I know a lot of you have been waiting for this

because the company that Verizon took a look at next,

Palm.

Verizon had rejected the first Palm Pre

and that went to Sprint,

which, you know, anytime a phone was exclusive to Sprint,

you know it's gonna bomb.

Just (chuckles) ask Essential.

But by 2009, Palm had made this, the Palm Pre Plus,

and it was looking to launch it on Verizon

and Verizon was actually game.

The Palm Pre Plus was maybe going to be

Verizon's iPhone killer.

We reported that Verizon had placed an order

for a, quote, extraordinary number of Palm smartphones,

but somewhere in there, Verizon changed its mind.

It might have just been playing Palm all along.

Instead, it launched the Droid

in October 2009 as its flagship,

and it did so with a huge marketing campaign.

I mean, massive.

The campaign was called Droid Does

and it took direct aim at the iPhone.

It said that it could do all sorts of things

that the iPhone can't, like multitasking and navigation

and taking five-megapixel photos and just on and on and on.

It was a spec war, basically.

Ad Age reported that Verizon pumped $100 million

into its marketing campaign, which is a lot of money now

and it was a huge amount of money back then.

Verizon also licensed the word Droid

from George Lucas, who had the trademark on it

thanks to, you know, Star Wars.

(droid chattering)

I have to point out that these ads,

they were awful and really misogynistic.

They painted the iPhone as girly

and the Droid is a manly stealth-bomber-looking thing.

I mean, just look at some of these imagery,

it's kind of flat out offensive.

- [Announcer] Is it a precious

porcelain figurine of a phone?

In truth? No.

It's not a princess.

It's a robot.

A phone that trades hair-do for can-do.

- Verizon, what were you doing?

A lot of people bought into your manly Droid ad claptrap

and it kind of hurt the Android community for a while.

Thankfully, those days are mostly behind us

but the Droid was good enough to serve as the thing

that people could get on Verizon

since they couldn't get an iPhone.

And that ad campaign made Android

the de facto other smartphone to the iPhone.

Now, it does not help that everybody else

was tripping over their own shoelaces

trying to make a phone to compete with the iPhone.

BlackBerry was antiquated, Symbian was on the downslope,

and Microsoft was so years away

from really knowing what the hell it was doing with phones.

They all shot themselves in their own feet

over and over and over again.

And Palm, it wasn't much better, but it was a little better.

Now, Verizon did eventually launch the Palm Pre Plus

but they made some pretty terrible commercials for it,

which were also a little bit sexist.

But that whole Verizon thing, it kneecapped the company.

And in the face of that huge, massive marketing blitz,

there wasn't any oxygen for anything other than Droid.

The rest was history.

Within six months of launching the Droid,

Android passed iOS as the most used smartphone

and it never looked back

on its path taking over most of the world.

So, I'm not saying Verizon single-handedly

made Android happen,

but without that ad campaign and this phone right here,

who knows?

Who knows what might have happened?

The next time you see a phone ad

and you just feel it's just a little bit too feel-good

and sentimental, just remember, nice is better than.

- [Robotic Voice] Droid.

- Hey, everybody, thanks so much for watching

and let me know in the comments

what made you buy your first Android phone.

Was it an ad campaign?

Was it a friend? Was it something else?

I'm really curious, let me know.

Also, if you missed the first part of this series

about Android history, it's about why Google bought Android

and made it in the first place, so you can check that out.

Credit Card Companies Team Up With Credit Karma To Increase Bank Loans - Duration: 2:47.

Not long ago we spoke about a fairly Orwellian new credit system in China.

Well, now the largest credit card companies in the United States are teaming up with the

free personal finance company Credit Karma to help members of the service get approved

for bank loans.

This could be a benefit for some consumers, especially in light of new changes on the

horizon related to how credit scores will be calculated.

Here to explain is Mollye Barrows, contributor for America's Lawyer.

Mollye, great to see you again.

I mean, how will these partnerships work?

Well, this is actually pretty interesting.

According to an article by the Wall Street Journal, two of the largest credit card issuers

are going to be sharing their closely-guarded underwriting models with Credit Karma.

And this is basically part of a new process that's going to make it easier for members

who use Credit Karma to know which loans they could potentially qualify for before the even

apply.

Now the benefit to credit card companies of course is that they could bring in potentially

new borrowers, it can streamline the loan approval process, and the benefit for Credit

Karma is that it is exactly in line with their, "Everyone benefits," business model.

Of course they analyze your credit score, they recommend products that are intended

to save you money, and then if you, as the consumer, buy that product then Credit Karma

gets reimbursed by the lender whose product was purchased.

So this could be certainly, certainly beneficial for Credit Karma and credit card issuers.

Yeah, and you might not have to get all those dings on your credit reports for doing things

that you-

Yes.

Just for checking.

Mollye, what are the changes that are proposed for these FICO credit scores?

Well, it's interesting.

It's called a new opt-in Ultra FICO credit score.

So basically it's going to roll out, start rolling out rather, in 2019, and whereas before,

those credit scores had been calculated based on how often, how timely you are making your

payments and your debt-to-income ratio, this particular change has given lenders a little

bit of leeway.

Say initially you don't qualify based on those two calculations, well then they're going

to go and take a look at how much is in your bank right now?

Are you overdrawing?

If you're not withdrawn, if you consistently have several hundred dollars in your account,

you have continuous activity, then they're going to recalculate your score under this

new Ultra FICO credit system.

So that's going to make it a little bit easier for people to be able to qualify for some

of these loans, especially younger folk and folks that have been typically left out of

the ... Or who wouldn't qualify typically for loans like this.

I mean, that's about seven million people.

So those folks who have credit scores in the mid to upper 600's, this is going to make

them eligible for loans they previously weren't eligible before.

So that, combined with the Credit Karma opportunities there, it's going to be a little bit easier

for millions of people to get loans.

Sounds like great news for consumers and we appreciate you giving us the updates.

Mollye Barrows, contributor for America's Lawyer.

Thanks for your time, Mollye.
