That Time an Olympic Rower Stopped to Let Some Ducks Swim By and Still Won the Gold Medal - Duration: 6:18.
Born in Sydney Australia in 1905, Henry Robert Pearce, better known as Bobby Pearce, dominated
the world of competitive rowing throughout the 1920s and 1930s and was extremely popular
with fans of the sport due to a combination of the ease with which he seemed to best opponents
and his affable personality.
Perhaps the greatest example of both of these things in action was the time Pearce stopped
mid-race to allow a duck and her ducklings to pass in front of him and still won.
This particular anecdote from Pearce's life occurred at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam
during the quarter final of the single sculls event in the Sloten canal.
For anyone unfamiliar, the single sculls is essentially a race between individual opponents
along a body of water and it has been a staple of the Olympic program since 1896.
Prior to taking part in the quarter final event at the 1928 Olympics, Pearce had already
made quite a splash with locals by beating his previous two opponents by nearly 30 seconds
each, winning his first event with such a comfortable lead that, according to a contemporary
report from the Sydney Morning Herald, he pulled up before the finish line to wait for
his opponent to catch up a little.
Pearce's opponent on the fateful duck match quarter final was a Frenchman called Vincent
Saurin, a powerful rower who during his career would win nine national titles and medal at
three European championships.
Despite his opponent's pedigree, Pearce was able to effortlessly pull away and secure
himself a near half-minute lead before the half way mark of the 2000 metre race.
In an interview with historian Henry Roxborough in 1976, Pearce recounted what happened next.
I heard wild roars from the crowd along the bank of the canal.
I could see some spectators vigorously pointing to something behind me, in my path.
I peeked over one shoulder and saw something I didn't like, for a family of ducks in
single file was swimming slowly from shore to shore.
It's funny now, but it wasn't at the time for I had to lean on my oars and wait for
a clear course…
"Had to lean on my oars…" isn't quite accurate.
He could have simply plowed through them, but chose to pull up.
While all this was happening, Saurin made up the lead Pearce had secured and, showing
far less concern for the welfare of the ducks than Pearce had, capitalised on his opponents'
unlikely stint as a duck crossing guard and blew past him, stealing himself a five length
lead before Pearce started rowing again.
Remarkably, in the final 1,000 metres of the race, not only did Pearce catch up to the
Frenchman, but he was able to once again get far enough ahead to secure an almost 30 second
lead by the finish line.
In the end, Pearce finished the race with a time of 7:42.8 vs. Saurin's 8:11.8.
This, in of itself would be impressive, but it should also be noted that not only was
Pearce able to beat Saurin by nearly half a minute after coming to a complete stop in
the middle of the race, but in that race he also finished with the fastest time of any
of the eight competitors that round.
We should also probably mention that this was during the elimination portion of the
competition meaning Pearce had risked his chance of winning an Olympic medal for his
country in his first Olympics to let the ducks pass.
Unsurprisingly, Pearce ultimately won the gold medal for that event, beating out the
previously undefeated American Kenneth Myers with a new world record for the 2,000 metre
event with a time of 7:11.0.
This record stood for an astounding 44 years, finally beaten in 1972 by Yuri Malishev of
the Soviet Union.
As for the formerly undefeated Myers, his time in that face-off was a nearly equally
remarkable 7:20.8, which would have been a new world record, beating the old by almost
15 seconds, if not for Pearce's time.
(For reference, today the world record is currently held by Mahé Drysdale of New Zealand
with a time of 6:33.35, which he set in Poland in 2009.
As for the Olympic record, it was recently set in 2012 in London by Tim Maeyens of Belgium
with a time of 6:42.52 in the first heat.
However, the gold medal in that Olympics went to Drysdale with a time of 6:57.82 seconds
in the final.)
Despite his incredible talent, as Pearce was barred from competing for money if he wished
to continue competing in the Olympics, he struggled to make ends meet for much of his
early life, even being unemployed during the early 1930s, scraping a living by collecting
scrap paper at the Sydney Showgrounds.
His fortunes turned around, however, when he met Scottish whisky magnate Lord Dewar,
who happily offered Pearce a job selling his whisky as his official Canadian representative,
prompting Pearce to move to Canada, where he lived the rest of his life.
Despite the move, Pearce continued to compete for Australia in the 1932 Olympics, in which
he defended his title, winning the gold by narrowly beating out American William Miller
by a mere 1.1 seconds in the final.
While that was a close finish, it should be noted that the nearest competitors behind
those two finished a whopping 30 seconds back.
Shortly after the 1932 Olympics concluded, Pearce decided to turn pro, barring him from
future Olympics, but at least allowing him to earn some money at his greatest skill while
his body was still up to it.
Pearce's professional career was decidedly uneventful… by which we mean he won every
event he took part in and none of his races involved ducks.
He eventually retired undefeated as an adult in 1938.
That same year, he even managed to win a title defense race in Toronto just a few days after
his wife unexpectedly died.
In fact, while we know he must have lost several matches before his first competitive victory
at 14 years old, the only definitive record we could find of Pearce ever losing a sculling
match was his first one when he was six years old, which was a 16 year old and under youth
competition.
He finished second in that race.
After retiring from the sport, Pearce tried his hand at being a professional wrestler
before joining the Canadian war effort during WW2 as part of the Naval reserves.
He served in the navy until 1956, retiring as a lieutenant commander.
He subsequently spent the rest of his life selling whisky on behalf of Lord Dewar in
Canada, later dying of a heart attack at the age of 70 in 1976.
Before his sculling career, Pearce served in the Australian army where he was the Army
heavyweight boxing champion.
Australians have historically always done well at rowing events and rowers, such as
Pearce, had long attributed this to the fact Australians train in the seas rather than
rivers and lakes, which are rougher and harder to control oneself in.
For Pearce, he was also aided by the fact that he had a rather unique training regime
(for the time, though very common today for virtually anyone wanting to get in great shape,
let alone pro-athletes), using interval training.
In his case, he would sprint for a quarter mile in his craft, then rest for a time, then
sprint again, etc. Pearce would alternate this with long distance rowing as his primary
methods of training.

Bombshell Report Confirms Dems Lied to Everyone About Middle Class Tax Cuts – America is ENRAGED! - Duration: 2:14.
Oh, look!
Democrats have just been caught in yet another major lie.
This one involves the recently-passed GOP tax cut bill.
Turns out, the middle class does get the biggest tax breaks – despite what Dems want the
uninformed to believe.
Check this out…
From Cato Institute:
The Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) has released its distributional analysis of the
final Republican tax bill.
The bill provides even larger percentage cuts for middle earners than previous versions
of the legislation.
[…]
The table below takes estimated payroll and excise taxes out of the JCT data.
It shows individual and corporate income tax cuts as a percentage of estimated individual
and corporate income taxes paid under current law.
Middle-income households will receive by far the largest percentage income tax cuts in
2019.
More on Democrat lies, per Washington Examiner:
Democrats this week tried a new approach in their battle against the Republican tax cut
bill: lying by omission.
Starting Monday, Democratic leaders released a talking point that said the bill would actually
raise taxes on 86 million middle-class households or families, despite GOP claims it would reduce
taxes for most people.
"Today, we face a GOP tax scam that raises taxes on 86 million middle-class families,"
Pelosi said Tuesday.
That was repeated over, and over, with no clarification.
"History will indeed remember this vote.
Future generations of Americans will remember who cast their votes to raise taxes on 86
million middle-class households," said House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., on the House
floor.
What Democrats tried to hide is that their statement is based on one part of the Tax
Policy Center's analysis of the GOP bill, which focused on what would happen in 2027,
after the individual tax cuts are set to expire.
What's the immediate impact of the GOP bill, starting in 2018?
Why, tax cuts for almost everyone, of course.
Enough is enough with Democrat BS!

Abandoned Railroad Crossing - Duration: 4:49.
Hello ladies and gentlemen, Indiana Jones AKA RailROL82 aka your railroad
archaeologist once again here with you, interesting discovery today this is an
abandoned or not even abandoned it's you can see the traces of it it's been
covered up about 95 percent so it's over here on Douglas Road, sunsetting sorry
about the backlight Douglas Road and NW 71st ST., I'll include a Google
Maps link in the description but yeah right here you can see the, what was
the emergency contact info
It's
broken, I don't see the other part
anywhere nearby, then there's no cross buck anywhere nearby you can see the
screws right here
That held up the cross buck
so this
and this is the only visible remnant of this spur, right now I'm walking north
and it went into this, what is it? Ochos Rios distributors of fine cuisine
yeah maybe Ochos Rios wasn't around when this was
being serviced to be the spur so yeah you can see the spur one in there right
they went that way you can see the the loading docks right there, facing South
now I'm gonna be facing, sorry I was facing North
now I'm going to be facing South so yeah this was the rail that I was walking on
and then there's there was another rail over here, see where it was sawed off
right there? You can see where it crossed you can see
that indent in the pavement still
I'm going to attempt to cross this road
what the hell
I cross the road now
then
oh look we got a some action over here on the crossing let's see what we got
and
the backlight is killer
probably a tri rail
sorry okay, now I'm not walking anymore so we'll have a steady shot
train horn
tri rail
okay so back to the abandoned spur
Then I remember that on this side
there was a
cross buck just like the one you saw over there somewhere around this area
but it's been years since it was removed so yeah so then this is where it crossed
across the street diagonally like that and you can see the
the curvature of that building right there with a Sun setting
that is curved
to accommodate what would have been a diagonal spur
so yeah there's no traces of it at all, at all, at all. That would have been where
it ran thru right there, that would have been where it ran thru and then give
you one last look. That's where I, so you can see the street 17 Street and then that's
where I began filming, that's where, that right there, that's where
that cross buck or remnant of a cross buck is, all right guys please subscribe or
like thank you very much for viewing over and out

Trina Spills Some Tea About Love & Hip Hop Miami! - Duration: 3:26.
Hey guys, what's up? This is Trina and you're watching BET.
This is my child, my child that you guys don't know about.
So if you might wanna know I have a kid, this is her.
Her name is Brittney Taylor and she's my kid,
and I love her, I've been knowing her for so long.
Way back in Miami we met like, so many years ago.
We just did a new record together for her.
This is my baby, we have like 6, 7, 8 records together.
Pop Suttin, look out for that.
One of my first records ever out on iTunes and everywhere.
So we made it fun, a club joint, called Pop Suttin.
I still feel the same way, there will be no boobs flying,
there will be no drinks thrown, there will be no spitting,
there won't be any of that.
Couple years back till we fast forward to now,
those were my rejections for Love and Hip Hop.
I had total control of my decision and my restrictions of what I do,
you know, I have a brand already, I'm not here to make a brand,
I am the brand, I'm just here to expand it.
I have a label, I have artists,
I have so much stuff to bring to the table,
the platform of the television is what enhanced it.
Trina fans are gonna see Trina having fun doing the stuff that she does,
interacting with Trick Daddy, of course,
being the mediator between him and my cousin Joy,
which is his wife that has been separated for a while,
taking on my cousin Bobby, which is also Bri's makeup artist in Miami,
which is over-hyper, belligerent, exaggerated, crazy, wild guy
and just having fun, like living my life, living the dream, doing what I do.
I just did a new shoe deal, I'm excited about it.
You guys are getting to see how that kinda paying out.
I'm just having fun in this industry and just going to the next level,
preparing myself for my album, tour, just doing things that make sense,
that my fans are gonna appreciate and love
and what they wanna see, yeah.
My mom don't play, so you're not gonna even say nothing to her.
She's not into the social media life,
I keep her away from that, it's not about that.
Relationships? It's not about my relationship.
I don't need you to see who's sleeping in my bed, it's not your business.
What about who's in your bed?
Not only that, you take and your bring somebody
and you give them an opportunity, you put a light on them
and they start blowing up
and they think they head is as big as, I don't know what
and then you be like "I just put you on and you acting..."
I'm not gonna do it, I'm not trying to put nobody on, no guys,
and make them like, you know, feel like they Superman, I'm not doing that.
It's about business, it's about building, branding,
the platform of music,
the platform of getting to the next level,
partnerships with any kind of deals, merchandise,
anything that I'm doing, it's all about that.
This is a business, I want it to be strictly about business and that's it.
Drama is drama, drama is in our lives every day.
Is drama in my life every day? It's just a certain type of drama.
It's a respectful drama.
We can agree to disagree without throwing and hitting and fighting and shoes,
we can do all of that, you know.
We have a little, we have this little thing called
"Hey, if I don't like something, I'll explain it to you as a woman."
And if you don't like it, you can say
"Hey, I don't like it, I'm not feeling it."
And we can hash it out, we can agree or we can move on and not agree
and that's just what it is but that's where it draws the line for me.
Lucky you.
No.
[laughing]
One of the main things is consistency, stay focused
and boss the f**k up on all of these guys because realistically,
they don't wanna see a female winning and in order for you to win,
you gotta just put it straight in they face
and you gotta come correcting, you know, don't sell yourself,
don't sell yourself short, period.
- That she say, period. - Period.

Jurgen Klopp emphasises need for hard work as Liverpool look to continue unbeaten run - Duration: 4:52.
Jurgen Klopp emphasises need for hard work as Liverpool look to continue unbeaten run
Jurgen Klopp has demanded results over style and says working hard will be key to Liverpool's continued impressive form.
The Reds have now gone 17 matches unbeaten in all competitions as they head toward a key clash against table-toppers Man City.
Such a set of results has put the Reds three points clear in fourth place of their nearest challenges Tottenham, while also much closer to second- and third-placed rivals.
Now the hope must be that an unbeaten run can be maintained, after January derailed the Reds attempts to climb higher in 2016/17.
This time around though, Klopp is adamant that he and the players know what to do, and it's not just about having a swashbuckling style which is pleasing on the eye.
"We are all a little bit more experienced in this period of the season," Klopp told LiverpoolFC.
com.
"It's not about playing a style from the sky or whatever, we really have to work and get results.
That's all we need.
"It's not allowed to be frustrated in a game about this or that; you always need to find a solution for the next situation and the next situation and the next situation.
The Reds' latest victory came courtesy of a 2-1 derby success in the FA Cup, giving a measure of revenge to Liverpool after Everton somehow snared an undeserved draw in the league in December.
Once again Klopp's side were vastly superior, but the players' reactions to conceding a goal was key for the manager.
"It's not my job to judge them but Everton played much better than the last game when we played them.
But they couldn't really create chances – we were always there and defended pretty well.
"The goal they scored was a big mistake by us, bad protection; we slept a little bit and lost [the runs].
"You need to react and we reacted.
The first pass after the goal was the worst we played in the whole game – Joel, nice and easy, to a blue [shirt].
"But then we were back on track and did what we had to do in a cup game, a cup fight, a derby, being ready for hard work.
Work ethic, aggression and greed to win have been staples of Klopp's which he has repeatedly demanded of his team.
With three competitions to fight in across the second half of the season, the German manager is after more of the same, with mentality critical to progression.
"If you wait for an easy game you will never have one.
If you are always ready to work really hard then maybe there's one or two in your whole career.
"We didn't wait for an easy game, we were ready for a hard game—and that's why we won.
The hard games will continue in the coming weeks, with matches against City, Spurs and Porto among a minimum of seven fixtures to play before the end of February.

Liverpool sought Philippe Coutinho loan after agreeing £142m deal with Barcelona - Duration: 2:37.
Liverpool sought Philippe Coutinho loan after agreeing £142m deal with Barcelona
Liverpool are reported to have requested a six-month loan back to Anfield as part of the £142 million deal that saw Philippe Coutinho join Barcelona.
The Brazilian playmaker has now joined the Catalan giants in a £142 million deal, but there was a possibility he could have remained at the Reds for the remainder of the current campaign.
A summer deal would have been preferable to most associated with Liverpool, but with both Barca and Coutinho determined to get a deal done in January, owners FSG made one last bid to keep the No. 10 around.
The Mail report the club's owners suggesting late on in negotations that the Brazilian returned on loan for this season, as he was cup-tied anyway for the Champions League.
Barcelona rejected the offer, and Coutinho would clearly not have accepted it anyway.
"This is not about money,' he is reported as saying.
"It's about the chance to play for Barcelona, to live in Barcelona.".
Former Reds midfielder Lucas Leiva is also quoted on the matter, backing Coutinho's decision.
"Missing the Champions League means you will be fresh for the World Cup, my friend," the now-Lazio man told Coutinho via live link from Rome.
'It's not ideal, but you have to look at things positively.".
No Coutinho for the Champions League knock-out stages then, for Liverpool orBarcelona.

Democrat Socialist Bernie Shows Up in $700 Luxury Coat - Duration: 2:31.
Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders loves to criticize the wealthy and enjoys painting Republicans
as out-of-touch millionaires, but his dirty secret is that he is one of the spoiled politicians
who lives far better than many Americans.
For example, the senator was spotted wearing a $689 Burton 2L LZ down jacket while swearing
in New York mayor Bill de Blasio for another term on Jan.1, according to Newsweek.
The waterproof, down-filled coat is lined with gore-tex and guaranteed to keep the wearer
warm in sub-zero temperatures, and for almost $700, it should last a lifetime.
That's quite an expensive coat for someone who has spent the majority of his life defending
hardworking Americans against the rich who exploit them.
Sanders might defend hard-working Americans and the poor, but he isn't one of them,
by any means.
The senator's income last year alone is telling.
Sanders earned more than $858,000 in book royalties alone in 2017.
That's on top of his salary as a United States senator.
Senators earn at a base pay of $174,000 a year.
As Newsweek pointed out, Sanders is part of the top 1 percent of the nation that earned
more than a million dollars.
Yet he slams the rich routinely.
In July, the senator penned an essay for CNN in which he demonized the wealthy, claiming
that income inequality was an issue that could no longer be ignored.
Sanders, who owns three homes, may have been speaking from experience when he said that
the wealthy are "never satisfied with what they have.
They want more, more and more — no matter what impact their efforts have on working
people, the elderly, children, the sick and the poor."
Greed, the senator added, is the religion of oligarchs who avoid taxes and shelter their
profits overseas.
This kind of hypocrisy is sickening.
Sanders might talk a good game, but that is only because he is part of the top echelon,
who always have the best of the best while average Americans survive on much, much less.
Most Americans have to save to buy a coat that is worth $100, yet they have to watch
snobby politicians like Sanders pretend to care for about them.
It's all an act.
Sanders appears to only care about one thing — his money and lining the pockets of his
overpriced coats.

Obama's Former Top General Just Dropped Unbelievable Bombshell About The Former President - Duration: 4:37.
During Barack Obama's Presidency, our country suffered more than it ever had before.
It was clear that he was only interested in destroying our country and did whatever he
could to make sure that happened.
Thanks to Obama, race relations have fallen further than we had witnessed in many years.
If he wasn't trying to tear the country apart by starting a race war, he was busy
handing the country over to illegal immigrants and radical Muslims whom he allowed to flood
into the country with his open border policies.
When he was elected, he wanted to fundamentally change our country, and he did.
Obama also gutted our military and never gave them the right tools to fight the bad guys,
and now, a former Obama top general has come forward with how destructive those policies
were and implored President Trump to not make the same mistakes as his predecessor.
Recently, Iran has been facing violent protests that many people think is the result of Obama's
policies.
Back in 2009, Iran was dealing with similar protests after citizens were angry over election
fraud and an oppressive government.
Obama didn't back the people of Iran, and now it all makes perfect sense after we learned
it was all to preserve his legacy over the Iran Nuclear Deal.
Here is more from Washington Examiner:
The former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff wants the Trump administration to not
make the same mistakes as the Obama administration and fully back protesters in Iran.
Retired Adm. Mike Mullen said on ABC's "This Week" that President Obama should have backed
Iranian protesters in 2009 more than he did.
Now that protests are once again roiling the Islamic Republic, President Trump should throw
his support behind them.
"We chose to not be as supportive as we could have been then," Mullen said.
"And I hope we can be right now so that Iran can continue to evolve.
They have an incredibly young population.
They look to a future that they cannot see.
They've been promised change and a healthier economy.
"Protests represent the inability to deliver that so far.
I think support of them seems … absolutely the right thing to do."
Mullen served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from Oct 1, 2007, to Sept.
30, 2011, working with both Obama and President George W. Bush.
Protests have erupted around Iran in recent days in response to a poor economy and an
oppressive regime.
Mostly led by college students, the Iranian government has already killed two protesters
and shut down social media networks that have helped facilitate the spread of the protests
to cities around the country.
Not only is Mullen calling for Trump to take a stand with the Iranian people, but so is
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who appeared on CBS's Face the Nation Sunday morning.
Here is more from Politico:
"The people are not getting the benefit of sanctions relief," the Republican senator
told Major Garrett on CBS' "Face the Nation."
"They are more upset with their oppressors than ever, the money from sanctions relief
is going to rebuilding the Iranian military and is destabilizing the Middle East."
Graham, who is regarded as a foreign policy hawk, said he would advise President Donald
Trump to do the opposite of his predecessor in addressing protests in Iran.
As a first step, the three-term senator called on Trump to give a public address on why the
Iran nuclear deal has "failed" and to lay out what a better deal would look like.
In 2009, Obama condemned "unjust actions" as Iranian leaders thwarted an uprising known
as "Green Revolution" after a disputed presidential election.
While Obama gave increasingly harsher critiques of how protesters were treated, his administration
was criticized for not being more forceful and direct.
Since Thursday, Iranians have protested throughout the country due to frustration with a sluggish
economy.
"If I was Trump, I would do the exact opposite of Obama," Graham said.
"Obama said, I don't want to get involved, I don't want to mess up the chance of a
deal with Iran.
Well, the deal with Iran has not worked."
Obama has always been out for himself and never wanted to see the country flourish.
He doesn't care about the people; he only wants to maintain his image.
He should have done what was right and back the people who were suffering in Iran.
Well, if Trump gets his way, and he usually does, he will back the Iranian people and
the nuclear deal could be history.
That would be a major blow to Obama and his legacy.
