I first started building roller coasters out of notebook
paper when I was five.
When he starts building a roller coaster,
he doesn't stop. - I'm Brandon.
My Disney dream job is to become a Walt Disney Imagineer.
I had a friend of mine who had three Disneyland tickets.
And he asked if I wanted them, and I told him, I'm so sorry,
I can't afford to pay you for them.
And he said, no, no, no, I want to give them to you.
And I want you to take your kids and have the best time.
That meant everything to me.
During that visit, that was the first time
I went on California Screamin'.
That trip definitely solidified that he wanted
to be Walt Disney Imagineer.
Brandon is expressive.
He's a theater nerd.
Because of my interest in musical theater,
I feel like there's a lot of other kids at my school
who judge me.
It is so hard as a parent to watch
your child struggle in any way.
When you're at Disneyland, it's such a magical place.
Everyone is so focused on fun they
are having that it really creates
this judgment-free zone.
Today, I'm going to get an inside look
at what it's like to become a Walt Disney Imagineer.
And I have no idea what to expect.
My name is Jeff.
I'm the producer of the new Pixar
Pier at Disneyland Resort.
And we're here at Walt Disney Imagineering
to welcome Brandon inside our walls
and show him a bit about what we do.
Brandon, hi, I'm Jeff.
Welcome to Walt Disney Imagineering.
Nice to meet you.
Let's go see what's going on.
So welcome to the model shop, and welcome to Pixar Pier.
This is Debbie Gonzalez, she's our creative director.
- Hi, Brandon. - Hi.
I was around your age when I first
learned what Imagineering was, and so this
is so special to meet you.
So this is Pixar Pier.
This used to be Paradise Pier.
Debbie, you want to tell us a little more about it?
Yeah, so at the beginning, we're
kind of celebrating just the artists
and the artistry of Pixar.
And then going around the pier, we have our Incredibles Park.
We have the Toy Story boardwalk.
We're pulling really fun elements from all of them,
and we're sort of hiding them like the Easter eggs
all throughout the pier.
What's the story behind the Incredicoaster?
So for the Incredicoaster we're here
to celebrate the Incredibles.
The coaster being rededicated to them.
And we're here for the inaugural launch day.
And all the Incredibles riding along with you, telling you
the action and what's going on.
Where do you get all of your ideas?
It's those moments when you're just
sitting around daydreaming.
That's what I find for me.
Because no one can really tell you when to be creative
and on what time slot.
And then just sort of taking that idea and running with it.
It starts with what stories do I want to experience?
What stories do I love?
You know, the great thing about the Incredicoaster
is this is our first Incredibles attraction.
So to be able to bring that to life,
it was a great inspiration for us.
And it was really exciting.
So I want to show you something really cool.
This is a special scope that Walt Disney himself had made
for the Imagineers to be able to view models
from a guest perspective.
Take a look.
And if you see, that's exactly what a guest is seeing
when they step into the Park. - That's so cool.
I love that Walt was such a visionary that even when
he was designing the theme parks,
it was done in a whole different way that
had never been done before. - That's amazing.
So if you look over here, we're building
Jesse's Critter Carousel.
And if you look at Jessie, she's actually
going to be over 12-feet tall.
And it features all her special critters that you get to see.
And so not only are we doing them sort of miniature scale,
but we actually have some full-sized ones if you'd
like to come check them out. - That would be incredible.
Well, come with me!
This is where we're creating the full-size sculpts
for Jessie's Critter Carousel.
They're huge.
They are huge.
They are full size.
This is actually as they're going
to appear in our theme park.
And we've been having Patrick and Irma here
who have been helping us out.
And they've been working on this whole process
from the beginning and the clay, all
the way to what we see them doing now
is sort of fine- tuning it in the foam.
That's incredible.
Oh, my gosh.
DEBBIE: So our first step is kind of doing
these general sketches.
And after we take it from this stage,
that's where we go to clay.
BRANDON: It's amazing how detailed they are.
Once they're what we call milled full size,
then they go back to Patrick and Irma.
From this point, we actually get to make them, you know,
what we call our hard coat.
And that's where we get to paint them.
And then they get to be as you see them in the parks.
Are the metal pegs--
that's what's holding them together, right?
That is literally what's holding
them together, because we actually
do them in different parts.
And then kind of like a puzzle, we put them
all together like a 3D puzzle.
Well, it's been so great to meet you Brandon,
but I need to go back to Imagineering some new designs.
So I'm going to take you to go meet
Tracey, who is our creative director of the Incredicoaster.
It was great meeting Brandon today.
I saw so much of myself in him, and I
loved being able to sort of share what I did with him
and inspire him as well.
But he was super inspiring to me in terms
of helping remind me that I get to live
my dream every single day here.
Hi.
Hey, you must be Brandon.
Welcome, I'm Tracey.
BRANDON: Nice to meet you.
Here, pull up a chair.
I heard that you were really into roller coasters.
I have this program on my computer called Planet Coaster.
High five, because I also have that program.
- Really? - Yeah, I do.
So I'm the creative director of the Incredicoaster
at Pixar Pier.
Have you been on Screamin'?
Yes, I have many times.
Oh, cool.
OK, so I'm going to show you some sneak
peeks of the Incredicoaster.
So I start off with storyboards with drawings
on tracing paper, napkins, or wherever my drawings come from.
And I wanted to show you kind of what it's like to be
an artist here at Disney.
So we use a lot of technology.
This is my tablet, and I draw on it pretty much every day.
Why don't you actually get up here and try
drawing it for yourself? Check it out.
Oh, that's so cool!
Then you can just--
Yeah, and you can erase.
Do you like to draw?
I do love to draw.
I draw a lot on my free time.
And sometimes I doodle on the back of my math pages.
Me, too, because that's sort of how I think.
I need to like--
Yeah
--doodle to learn.
That didn't entirely make me super popular in high school
or middle school.
It can be sort of difficult to be creative, right?
Yeah, definitely.
But part of what makes Imagineering so cool
is we have so many disciplines.
You have minds like mine that like to draw and think things through.
And then we have other people that are phenomenal at math,
and they figure out how to get the coaster to go.
And a lot of people with theater backgrounds,
people that are really good at presenting themselves.
I'm actually really into theater.
Are you really?
Yeah.
That is awesome.
Does it make you kind of more curious
about doing things like coasters?
Or do you want to do entertainment?
Just the creative side of it, as
well as the engineering side.
It really appeals to me.
That's the perfect theme, right?
Imagineering, it's engineering and creativity.
Imagination.
So you're in the right spot for that.
We have a surprise for you.
How would you like to virtually ride the coaster?
Brandon, welcome to the Dish.
This is where we do a lot of our really kind of cool stuff.
Why don't you guys have a seat and put on your 3D glasses.
And we will take a ride on the Incredicoaster.
Oh, my gosh.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
We come back into our load station.
Seeing Brandon today at the same age that I was,
I was super awkward,
And you need to know that there are inspiring careers that you
can still have and keep your personality,
keep your identity, and be creative,
and be that weird person.
I really hope that Brandon stays curious.
Today was the best day ever.
It was more than I could have ever dreamed of.
I can't-- I'm speechless.
I think he's met so many people today
that are exactly like he is when they were a kid.
They stood out because they were themselves,
and that's how Brandon is.
And it warmed my heart today to see him relate to these adults.
Tracey told me that she was the weird kid, too,
and look where she is, so, you know.
I'm going places.
This is my Disney dream job because I love roller coasters,
and I love designing and building them.
And I want to give back that same feeling of joy
that I get from riding a roller coaster.
It definitely confirmed my dreams of becoming
a Walt Disney Imagineer.
