Jess: Hey everybody and welcome to Kupa TV!
I am Jess and I am so excited about our special guest nail artist, Emese Koppányi.
Hello nice to see you.
Emese: Hi Jess nice to see you!
Jess: OK I am so excited, she is so talented and I cant wait for you guys to see like what
she has for you today.
But Emese, I want to learn a little bit more about you before we get into the nails and
everything.
So I know you work in West Hollywood.
Can you tell us a little bit about the salon where you work, do you work for someone, or
do you work for yourself?
Tell us a little about that.
Emese: No, we just opened the nail salon with my husband in November.
And my husband is a nail artist too!
So we opened November in West Hollywood.
Jess: That's so exciting!
I love like when couples work together, like you know in the salon atmosphere, because
I feel like you know like a lot there aren't a lot of male nail artists that we see in
salons.
So I really get excited when I see people doing things together.
Whats the name of your salon?
Emese: EDKO Nail Salon, because my husbands name is Edange and my name is Koppanyi, so
we put together the beginning of the two names.
Jess: I love it!
That's so nice.
SO do you, I heard you do a lot of like nail competitions and stuff?
How long have you been doing that?
Emese: Yeah I love to compete!
I still compete.
My last competition was in January in Long Beach.
Jess: Awesome.
What did you do for the nail competition?
Emese: This time I did only Salon Success because I live here for just short time so
I didn't know so many people, I didn't have model, only for one competition.
Jess: Where did you move here from?
Emese: Actually from Miami.
But I lived there just for a couple of months because we moved to the USA last April from
Europe.
Jess: SO you haven't even been here for a full year and you have already opened your
own salon, and already done a few nail competitions?
Emese: Yes.
Jess: That's awesome!
I love that, that's so exciting.
Emese: Thank You.
Jess: Okay, so tell us a little about what you are going to be doing today?
Emese: Today I will make French nails, but not competition style, it is a little bit
different more salon style.
It is an almond shape french nail with cover pink.
Jess: Cool, I love almond shaped nails.
I think those are so versatile and I think they are so flattering on like every nail
shape.
Do you do a lot of almond shape nails or do you switch it up a little bit?
Emese: No, I like on myself the almond shape but in the salon they are asking for the ballerina
shape more than almond shape.
Jess: I found that ballerina shape I feel like is really popular right now.
Do you see any other, like we are at the beginning of 2017, do you see any other like nail trends
coming up or anything that you can predict will be huge this year?
Emese: I don't know exactly, because here, I had to realize the nail business here is
completely different than Europe.
In Europe we made much more acrylic nails than here.
Here in the salon we have too many regular manicure pedicure and gel nails.
And at the moment we have just a few clients for acrylic nails.
But all of them are coming back!
Jess: Do you feel like there's a between American nail salons and European nail salons,
do you find that the the nail art is different?
Or do you think that
Emese: Everything is different.
Jess: Everything is different.
Emese: Everything is different.
In Europe it's not that popular the nail spa.
Like here, anywhere I was working in Europe I have never seen.
The spa.
I mean the spa chairs.
Jess: I feel like we get pretty crazy, like you know I feel like in general Americans,
and I say this being an American, are loud and we like insanity.
And especially in places like West Hollywood, where I have worked in West Hollywood, and
I love it but, it must be like very drastic from doing you know a certain type of thing
like European nails that from what you are saying sound very classic and clean.
And going to West Hollywood where people want Glitter, and all kinds of nail art and long
nails.
Emese: No, they want regular manicure pedicures, and gel nails.
Jess: Really?
Emese: Yes.
Jess: I think that's yeah.
Emese: But, I would like of course more and more clients for acrylic nails because this
is the thing we love to do with my husband.
And we would like some employee who make the mani pedi stuff.
Jess: Yeah, just have some one else do the basic mani pedis.
And you and your husband can just play and do the acrylics.
Emese: Yes, exactly.
Jess: Awesome, OK let's get started.
I am so excited to see what you do.
Emese: I have already prepared her nails.
So the first thing I apply the Nail Prep onto fingers.
After I apply the nail prep and the primer, the acid free primer, I apply properly the
forms.
The form must fit correctly under her nails.
At first I apply the cover pink.
Half on the nail bed half on the form.
At first I push back, I make it very thin because after I don't want to see the line.
Raise the cover pink ends, and I create with my brush the inverse of the smile line.
Always when you have acrylic use acrylic you have the press and brush.
Completely different stuff than gel.
And I have to create a wall around and after I just push to this wall white.
I apply the second ball, it is much smaller, and more wet than before.
Because I would like to make very natural look on her nail bed.
And after if you have this when the nail is growing you can not see too much from the
growing.
You see?
It is very same the cuticle area, its nice mix.
You have to make sure you have your wall around, because after it is going to be very very
easy to create your smile line.
And it is very important to create the cover pink exactly the same shape you would like
after for your smile line.
Of course if you have not perfect smile line area you can file a little bit.
But not too much, don't make your smile line with a file.
You have to make the smile line with the brush.
After when I finished with cover pink I have to apply clear on top or clear pink.
Because after I don't need anything from this, only just white.
I cover all of the nail with the pink, the transparent pink.
Make sure that the cuticle area is very very thin.
Because after it is going to be very difficult to file when you finish.
And you can see I have created a wall.
OK I apply the form on the other finger.
Because I need to wait to dry.
Cannot apply the white.
Make sure that you have to pinch your form and after you just put under and make that
the form fits from side to side.
Jess: And a lot of people have problems with forms.
I know I struggled for a long time too.
So if you have problems with forms, if they you know, turn out all wonky.
Feel free to go back and replay that as many times as possible.
Because she's right, lining it up, making sure that you know there is no gaps or anything.
Because that will just save you so much time later.
So you wont have to file, you wont have to go back, so its like you know less time your
client is in the chair is more time for someone else to be there.
You know what I mean?
SO go ahead rewind, rewatch that she is really good at it.
She makes it look easy I know.
Emese: After again, I show you again how we have to apply the cover pink.
So put the first ball half the nail, half on the form.
And you have to press, press, and make it very thin towards the cuticle area.
And you have to keep it more toward the smile line area.
I tell again, this first bead is going to the nail plate and the form, you create the
smile line, your future smile line.
And after you apply the second one it is much smaller bead and more wet than the first one.
And you make it very very thin towards the cuticle area and afterwards brush towards
the smile line area.
And like this you will have a very natural look on the nail bed.
It will really look like her own.
This technique is very good if someone has very short nail beds and wants french nail.
You can make very beautiful french nail like that if the nail bed is a little bit longer.
After you apply again the clear pink on top.
You make the structure with this.
Again you can see I apply very very thin towards the cuticle.
And more thick towards the smile line area.
For this I need to hold my brush in a little bit angle to keep the smile line area thicker
than the cuticle area.
And make sure that the clear is not going longer than the nail bed you created before.
After the second one just for the cuticle area.
Make sure that you don't touch the skin.
You have no product on the skin.
Because after you can not remove with filing and you can hurt your client.
Okay.
I file a little bit the smile line area.
To make the smile line more sharp.
Not too much.
I don't create the smile line with the file.
Just I a little bit clean up.
To make sure that both sides are the same.
And the front is oval not straight.
After I remove the dust.
And just very easily I apply the white.
Make sure that you apply your white from one bead.
So you have to take, depends on the length, a huge bead.
Don't be afraid of this.
And after you can push the two sides and try to make your shape because after you don't
need too much filing.
You save a lot of time, if you can create the same length and shape you want to make
for your client.
Just press, and make the shape.
As I told you, you don't have to take care of the smile line now.
Because after when you make the filing your smile line will show up.
Of course if you need to add more white you can just the most important thing when you
apply the first one is going from side to side, make the length, make the shape.
But on surface on top you can add a little bit more if you want.
So now you can not see how beautiful the smile line will be.
But after when you make filing it will show up.
Jess: I feel like thats a lot of things.
Like thats something that nail techs have to tell their clients sometimes.
It's just like it's going to look pretty, just let me you know, do my thing.
Because everyone has that story about that one client thats like "there is a little
thing right here are you going to file it off?".
And it's like yes I am about to.
Emese: I will.
Jess: I see it you know.
But you can still even though your like not finished obviously.
But you can still see the shape and you could still see you know the smile line.
You know.
Emese: Of course.
Jess: It looks so good.
Emese: After the second now it's almost dry.
So again just touch up a little bit the smile line.
Make sure that your form is not moving, not falling down.
You see I don't file too much.
Just a little bit to shape, to make more great smile line.
After I remove the dust.
And just apply again the white.
Same way like before, I take a huge white put it one the form, clean your brush and
push one side, and after the other side.
Push to the wall of the smile line.
The end of the smile, end of white must be more thinner than the smile line area.
Now we have to wait a little bit to dry the white.
After I pinch a little bit to make it more slender.
The nail, especially if someone has a little bit wider nail beds its very important to
pinch the nail.
Because after the nail will look much more slender.
Just need to wait to dry.
To pinch you can use a tool, it is more easier.
Just put on the nail, and it will hold the same beautiful shape for you.
See, after the nail will be very slender in the stress area.
This is the most important thing to press, to pinch at the stress area.
Because normally the end of the nail is already pinched because of the shape of the form.
The place you have to pinch is at the stress area.
And I can feel underneath the nail is pinched.
Okay.
After the nail is dry, you can start the filing.
For this I use a 100/180 grit file.
I file the surface and cuticle area.
A little bit, and after it is important to make it very beautiful shape.
You have to move your file a little bit up and down as you can see not he picture.
Up and down like this, the nail will be very very slender shape.
Jess: Its very sleek and I feel like it helps.
It almost makes the nails look longer, you know, longer and more elegant.
Like what you were saying if a client has, you know, short nail beds, like that shape
and pinching it and smoothing out the edge like that I feel like helps.
It makes a World a difference.
Emese: Yeah.
But it is very important the filing.
You have to file a little bit up and down.
Move the file up and down.
Because after the side of the white will be more thin.
And it is very very easy to file after the underneath parallel.
Make sure that all the time that the nail must follow the natural nail bed.
No wider, no smaller.
Does the same.
Because if it is wider it looks fat, if it more smaller than the natural nail bed it
will be broken and the stress area very easily.
After the other side it's a little more difficult to file.
You have to hold with the other hand the side and push to the file.
Push with the file the finger the other hand.
You know what I mean?
And up and down again your file.
File the surface but don't up your file, you are just going from one side to the other
side without up your file from the finger.
Jess: I like the way you are holding that.
Because you have a nice secure grip on it but you are still able to you know.
As opposed to holding one end of the file, which I have seen people do.
The hold one and it's just.
That way it is just a lot sleeker and easier to move it looks like.
Emese: All the time you have to move your file.
Never file too much at the same place.
Because after you will have a straight lane a corner on the surface.
And the nail surface must be oval.
The cuticle area you have to push back your clients cuticle.
Because you don't want to cut them.
Both sides.
And the surface, and you can see that the smile line shows up.
You have to push the white to this wall or whatever color you want to use.
Because of course you can use different colors not only white.
My other favorite is black.
After you can turn the hand and check the shape from this view.
And the surface.
Because the surface must be everywhere the same, even everywhere.
Okay you can go to the other finger to pinch.
Okay after you are done you can remove the form.
So again first surface a little bit, and after you can go to the parallel, as I told up and
down, up and down.
And when you make this movement your file must be very very straight.
Up and down.
After you can file the parallel, the side line, and after the other side.
Up and down.
You can see if you don't use too much product its very very easy filing.
You don't need to waste too much time with filing.
And the smile line showed up here too.
So thats why it is very very important to create a beautiful inverse of the smile line.
Because after how you create the inverse with the cover pink your smile like will be exactly
the same.
You can not modify after that.
Nothing.
And I make sure that the shape is nice and the same like the other fingers.
And you have to see from every angle, you have to check your nail, no bumps, and humps
on the nail.
Just very even.
And make sure that the shape of the nail is the same like the previous nail.
It is very very important to make consistent nails.
So you have to file the nail the same shape like the others.
Because the client wants to see 10 same nail shape.
So when you finished the filing after you can buff the surface.
Because to apply to top shine you need a little bit more smooth surface, a shaper buffer on
the surface.
After remove all of the dust.
So after you can use new Gel top from Kupa.
Don't apply too much and don't put on the skin of course.
Very thin, very precise.
And try to avoid to touch the skin with the brush of the.
And after you have to cure in the UV/LED Lamp for 90 seconds.
After the no-wipe top coat cure after you can apply some cuticle oil.
And you are all done!
