Why are Some Pages "Intentionally Left Blank" and Why Do They Say This? - Duration: 4:51.

Hello I'm Daven Hiskey, you're watching the Today I Found Out Youtube channel, in

the video today, we're looking at why some pages are intentionally left blank and why

they sometimes paradoxically print this on the pages.

It's easy to dismiss the phrase, "This page is intentionally left blank" and its usage

as an example of bureaucracy gone mad, but it and the blank pages themselves are actually

there for good reason.

To begin with, the practise of marking intentionally blank pages some form of "intentionally blank"

goes all the way back to the dawn of automated printing itself, where mistakes in printing

were relatively common.

Like today, the main purpose of marking these pages in this way was simply to make sure

people knew that the blank page wasn't a result of a printing error.

Given this, it's no surprise that you'll almost always only see this text on pages that you

might otherwise think shouldn't be blank given their position in the written work.

This brings us around to the much more interesting question of why any pages are left blank in

the first place.

After all, this is a waste of paper and potentially a lot of money given the print volume of some

tests, pamphlets, books, etc.

As for the first on that list, in timed tests an intentionally blank page is often used

as a shield of sorts to stop wily students from trying to read the next section's questions

before they're supposed to.

To make sure no student is confused about a random blank page in their test, they simply

indicate on the page some form of the somewhat contradictory statement, "This page is intentionally

left blank".

Alternatively, they might put something like "Stop Here" instead, so the student knows

to wait until the next timed section starts and that the page is mostly blank for a reason.

Another reason to include a blank page, particularly in certain official documents, is to avoid

ink from a pen potentially bleeding through to another section of the document.

This is also one of the reasons you may sometimes encounter otherwise blank pages saying something

like "Do not write anything on this page".

In both cases, the page is there simply to prevent processing errors due to ink-bleed.

Blank pages in books and other bound works, on the other hand, are generally there because

these works are often created by folding single, large sheets of paper in very specific ways

and binding them all together.

This group of pages is known as a "signature" and might include something like 4, 8, 16,

or 32 pages out of a single large sheet.

Regardless of how the paper is folded, the end result is going to be a book or booklet

with an even number of pages.

If you look carefully at the spine of a book you have lying around, you may even be able

to see this sort of grouping of pages if you let it flair open a bit.

So, for example, if the content of the book fills 299 pages, the layout artist might choose

a signature of 4- thus a minimum of 75 folded sheets making up 300 total pages, including

one blank page.

On the somewhat extreme end, if the signature comprises 32 pages (so 10 folded sheets making

up 320 pages), you'll have a whopping 21 blank pages, making this signature likely a poor

choice here, though there still might be financial or technical reasons to use it anyway.

Of course, savvy editors or layout artists tend to try to tweak formatting to help the

book fit the chosen signature while minimizing needed pages.

But inevitably there's going to be times where nothing can be done and there will be a blank

page or pages.

In this case, they might resort to tricks such as putting advertisements about some

of the other works by the author or publisher in.

Alternatively, they might put in a short biography on the author, rather than have it somewhere

on the cover.

Or, if necessary, they might move such a biography to the cover to save a page within the book.

Alternatively, they might indicate the blank page(s) are for the reader to take notes,

particularly in works like textbooks.

All of these tricks are basically ways of avoiding a random blank page, or in some cases

needing to put something like "This page is intentionally left blank" in the book.

Nevertheless, you'll still occasionally see this text in some bound works, again in these

cases generally only put there in cases where the editor in question thinks the reader might

think the page was not supposed to be blank.

So, for instance, you may have noticed that many books have a blank page at the start

or end or both; this is a safe bet not to confuse anyone, so is a handy way to mask

that the book's content didn't quite fit the signature without needing to put "This page

intentionally left blank".

Bonus Fact: • In the Principles of Federal Appropriations

Law (Second Edition, Volume IV) printed in 2001, the Office of the General Counsel in

the US General Accounting Office switched things up a bit on the old "blank page that

isn't blank" conundrum.

Instead of stating "This page is intentionally left blank", they wrote on one blank page

"This page is intended to be blank.

Please do not read it"...

Want to tell me what's going on?

Be a lot easier to tell you what's not going on.

Your ex is leading the charge.

So what am I supposed to tell the mayor?

That he's ugly.

That he's bald. Oh, how 'bout this?

How 'bout this?

Tell him we have a district-wide cyber

attack on our infrastructure.

And if he knows anything about massively

parallel information processing systems, we could use his help.

Otherwise, he should probably just stick to pounding his desk

and blaming me for everything.

EXCITING TO WATCH.

I HAVE MY BLOOD PRESSURE

ANDREW: IT'S GOING TO BE GREAT

HOCKEY, SHOULD BE A LOT OF FUN.

THESE TWO TEAMS OBVIOUSLY DON'T

GET ALONG, SO THAT WILL MAKE IT

MORE INTERESTING.

MIKE H.: WOULD HAVE BEEN NICER

IF THEY MET LATER DOWN THE ROAD.

WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THAT RIGHT

NOW.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE

TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE, WE MADE IT

UP TO THE, AROUND 63 DEGREES

THIS AFTERNOON, BUT THE RAIN

CAME THROUGH, YOU CAN SEE THE

RAIN DROPS ON THE SCREEN RIGHT

NOW, WE'VE DROPPED DOWN A LITTLE

BIT TO 59.

WIN OUT OF THE EAST AT 16 MILES

PER HOUR.

TEMPERATURE WISE, THE FURTHER

YOU GO AWAY FROM THE RAIN, THE

WARMER IT GETS, 68 IN

YOUNGSTOWN, 66 IN FRANKLIN,

AKRON AT 70.

DEEP CREEK 46.

MORGANTOWN 57.

RIGHT NOW 52 IN WASHINGTON.

WE HAVE THIS BIG AREA OF LOW

PRESSURE JUST OFF THE COAST, AND

IT'S PUMPING UP ALL THIS

MOISTURE INTO PENNSYLVANIA, NOT

MUCH IS MAKING IT INTO WESTERN

PENNSYLVANIA.

WE'VE HAD A TRACE OF RAIN SO

FAR, OFFICIALLY AT THE AIRPORT.

NOT EXPECTING TOO MUCH MORE TO

SOME LIGHT SCATTERED SHOWERS OR

SPRINKLES IN THE AREA.

BUT IT HAS REALLY BROUGHT THE

CLOUDS IN LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

THIS MORNING WE HAD SOME NICE

SUNSHINE, ESPECIALLY FROM

PITTSBURGH UP TO THE NORTH AND

YOU CAN SEE JUST VERY LIGHT RAIN

THAT IS MOVING INTO THE REGION.

AS WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW, THAT

LOW WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH UP TO

THE NORTH, SO WE'LL HAVE THE

CHANCE OF A FEW SPRINKLES OR

LIGHT SCATTERED SHOWERS AS WE GO

THROUGH THE DAY ON TUESDAY, BUT

WEDNESDAY WILL BE IN BETWEEN

SYSTEMS, WE'LL SLIP IN A LITTLE

HIGH PRESSURE. SO THE SECOND

HALF OF WEDNESDAY WE'LL BE

LOOKING AT SUNSHINE RETURNING.

SO ON FUTURE CAST, YOU CAN SEE

CLOSER HERE, 7:00 A.M. IN THE

MORNING, COULD HAVE A FEW

SPRINKLES SOUTHEAST OF

PITTSBURGH.

THIS IS 1:00 ON TUESDAY, HERE IT

IS AT 6:00, BUT MOST LOCATIONS

WILL BE STAYING DRY AND THEN WE

GO INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING AND

THE MORNING WILL HAVE THE CLOUDS

AROUND, BUT WE GO THROUGH THE

DAY YOU'LL SEE HOW IT GETS VER

NICE.

THURSDAY ALSO LOOKING IN PRETTY

GOOD SHAPE AND BOTH OF THOSE

DAYS IT'S GOING TO BE VERY WARM

OUT THERE.

TOMORROW WE'RE LOOKING AT

50 DEGREES TO START THE DAY, SO

ON THE MILD SIDE IN THE MORNING.

BY NOONTIME WE'RE UP TO 60 WITH

MAYBE A COUPLE OF SPOTTY SHOWERS

AROUND.

THEN WE TAKE IT INTO THE

EVENING, A HIGH OF 68, WIN EAST

AT 5 TO 10 MILES PER HOUR.

TOMORROW, 68 DEGREES.

BUT LOOK ON WEDNESDAY A

THURSDAY, CLOUDS ON WEDNESDAY,

SUNSHINE WILL COME OUT,

80 DEGREES.

THEN WE TAKE IT INTO THURSDAY,

84 DEGREES FOR YOUR HIGH

TEMPERATURE.

COLD FRONT COMING THROUGH LATE,

SO THAT COULD BRING SHOWERS LATE

ON THURSDAY AND THROUGH THE DAY

ON FRIDAY, WE DROP THE

TEMPERATURE DOWN TO 74.

AND EVEN COOLER AS WE HEAD INTO

THE WEEKEND ON SATURDAY, A

CHANCE OF RAIN SATURDAY AS WELL

AS SUNDAY.

YOUR FOUR-DEGREE GUARANTEE FOR

TOMORROW, A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF

68 DEGREES.

SHANNON: TIME FOR WEATHER NOW,

WE HAVE CHIEF METEOROLOGIST MIKE

HARVEY JOINING US NOW.

I KNOW YOU LIKE SPRING AND IT

WAS A BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND, BUT

IT'S TURNING INTO SUMMER.

MIKE H.: REALLY QUICK, WE'VE

SEEN TEMPERATURES IN THE 80'S

THROUGH THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.

IT'S GOING TO TAKE RIGHT OFF.

NOT NEAR 80 TODAY, WE'RE SEEING

SHOWERS WHICH ARE MOVING

THROUGH, AND THE FURTHER SOUTH

YOU GO TODAY, THE COOLER THE

TEMPERATURES GET, THAT'S A BIT

UNUSUAL.

RIGHT NOW 57 DEGREES IN

MORGANTOWN.

57 IN WEST MIFFLIN, NEW CASTLE

AT 61.

YOUNGSTOWN 68.

FRANKLIN AT 66 DEGREES.

RAIN DROPS ON THE CAMERA LOOKING

INTO DOWNTOWN PITTSBURGH, WHERE

WE HAVE A TEMPERATURE OF

59 DEGREES.

WINDS EAST AT 6 MILES PER HOU

AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE CLOUDS,

FROM CRANBERRY, LOOKING OUT

TOWARDS THE WEST, YOU CAN SEE IT

BECAME OVERCAST IN THE

AFTERNOON.

PLENTY OF SUNSHINE UP IN

CRANBERRY, BUT THAT WENT AWAY

AND IT WILL BE OVERCAST AS WE

HEAD THROUGH TONIGHT AND INTO

TOMORROW MORNING.

HERE IS WHY.

THERE'S ACTUALLY LOW PRESSURE

WHICH IS SOUTH OF NORFOLK, ALL

OF THAT IS PUSHING UP INTO

PENNSYLVANIA.

NOT SEEING A LOT IN THE WAY OF

RAIN, JUST SPRINKLES OR LIGHT

RAIN SHOWERS THAT ARE MOVING

INTO WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA AT

THIS TIME.

BUT IT IS EXTENDING UP TOWARDS

BUTLER COUNTY THROUGH BEAVER

COUNTY, UP TOWARDS LAWRENCE

COUNTY.

SO YOU COULD SEE A FEW RAIN

DROPS UP AS FAR AS THOSE

LOCATIONS, AND IT'S VERY

SPORADIC AND VERY LIGHT.

THAT IS MOVING INTO THE REGION.

AS WE GO INTO TOMORROW THAT LOW

WILL MOVE RIGHT UP THE COAST AND

THAT WILL GIVE US A CHANCE OF

SEEING A FEW LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS,

ESPECIALLY FROM PITTSBURGH TO

THE SOUTHEAST.

BUT AGAIN NOT MUCH IN THE WAY OF

RAIN ACCUMULATION.

THAT LOW WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE

OFF, AS WE HEAD INTO THE DAY ON

THURSDAY WE'LL START WITH

CLOUDS, BUT YOU SEE HIGH

PRESSURE FILLS IN AND THAT

SHOULD CLEAR US OUT.

SO WE SHOULD FINISH WEDNESDAY

WITH SOME SUNSHINE AND VERY WARM

TEMPERATURES, AND THOSE WARM

TEMPERATURES WILL STICK AROUND

THROUGH THURSDAY.

SO HERE WE GO INTO TOMORROW,

THIS IS TUESDAY AT 7:00 A.M.,

MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES, AS WE HEAD

THROUGH THE DAY, 1:00 SOME

SHOWERS, VERY LIGHT, EAST OF

PITTSBURGH AND SOUTH OF

PITTSBURGH, THAT'S ALSO THE CASE

AT 6:00 P.M.

AS WE TAKE A LOOK IT INTO

WEDNESDAY, YOU SEE THE CLOUDS

THAT WILL BE WITH US, THOSE WILL

MOVE AWAY AS THAT LOW PRESSURE

MOVES UP TO THE NORTH AND HIGH

PRESSURE FILLS IN.

SO WEDNESDAY WE WILL FINISH WITH

MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES, AND WARM

TEMPERATURES.

ON THURSDAY WE'LL START THE DAY

AT LEAST THE FIRST HALF WITH

MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES BEFORE CLOUDS

COME IN AND A CHANCE OF SHOWERS

LATE ON THURSDAY.

OVERNIGHT MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH A

COUPLE OF SHOWERS, 50 DEGREES

TOMORROW MORNING.

A HIGH TEMPERATURE ON TUESDAY,

68 DEGREES.

MOSTLY CLOUDY AND WE'LL ONLY

HAVE A FEW SPOTTY SHOWERS AROUND

TOWN.

AS YOU TAKE A LOOK AT WEDNESDAY

AND THURSDAY, SHOW, A LOOK AT

THESE HIGH TEMPERATURES, 80 ON

WEDNESDAY, THAT'S THE DAY WE'LL

HAVE CLOUDS IN THE MORNING, IT

WILL BECOME MOSTLY SUNNY, 84 ON

THURSDAY, THAT WILL BE THE

OPPOSITE, WE'LL HAVE SUNSHINE

THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF THE

DAY UNTIL NOON, THEN IN THE LATE

AFTERNOON CLOUDS WILL ARRIVE AND

THURSDAY NIGHT WE'LL HAVE

SHOWERS WHICH WILL MOVE IN,

THOSE RAIN SHOWERS WILL BE WITH

US INTO FRIDAY WITH A COLD

FRONT, THAT WILL DROP OUR HIGH

DOWN TO 74 ON FRIDAY.

BACK UP TO 78 ON SATURDAY, AND

82 ON SUNDAY.

BOTH DAYS A CHANCE OF RAIN.

YOUR FOUR-DEGREE GUARANTEE FOR

TOMORROW, 68 DEGREES.
