How Hollywood Misrepresents the Working Class ft. Gabe Gonzalez | Decoded | MTV - Duration: 6:32.

- Do you ever wonder how 20-somethings on TV

are able to hang out with their friends

in the middle of the day, spend all their time in a bar,

fly to a wedding in Italy,

and still pay their rent and student loans on time?

Because, that's impossible in the real world.

The past few years have shown some progress

towards addressing the lack of racial and ethnic diversity

in Hollywood, but there's one representation issue

that's been ignored for a while, and that's class.

Working class and lower class lifestyles

are rarely depicted accurately in media or film, if at all.

And, when about one-third of Americans

identify as working class,

and about 15% live below the poverty line,

we shouldn't ignore the economic realities

for those in lower income brackets.

And, to help me explain why this disparity

between Hollywood and reality matters,

I've invited my friend Gabe Gonzalez.

- Thanks, Franchesca.

First, let's be clear about what we mean when we say class.

It's not a judgment value, but a way to explain

how our economy and culture are stratified.

The problem with movies and TV,

is that it seems like just about everybody lives in a world

where money and time are no object,

but not only is it dishonest

about the way most Americans live,

it sets unrealistic expectations.

Let's take a look at some of the worst offenders.

Have you ever noticed how big the houses on TV are?

I'm not just talking spacious,

I'm talking two mortgages, and decades-of-debt huge.

This makes sense if we're talking about a show

like Fresh Prince, but when almost every TV show

puts the average American family

in the most unrealistic digs ever, I'm not buying it.

Literally, nobody I know could afford that house.

The home where Modern Family shot their series

recently sold for $2.3 million,

which should be a down payment

of almost half a million bucks.

Anyone want to explain

how the Dunphy parents keep paying that mortgage

with 3 kids and only one working parent?

Phil Dunphy is not a bumbling real estate agent,

Phil Dunphy is the LeBron James of LA real estate.

The crew of friends on How I Met Your Mother

take turns living in a two bedroom

that would probably cost at least $3,000 or more a month,

based on location, which might seem doable,

if you're splitting it with someone,

but any New Yorker will tell you the sheer size

of that Upper West Side Manhattan apartment

is a more epic fantasy than Game of Thrones.

If you want to rent the Friend's apartment in Manhattan,

without the convenient rent control,

it would probably cost over $5,000 a month.

Ask any barista or line cook in New York

and that's definitely out of their price range.

Rachel and Monica wouldn't even be able to afford just rent

if they both worked 80 hours a week.

Or, how about the fact that Lorelai on Gilmore Girls

works as the manager of an inn,

and can afford a 2.8 million dollar home,

and yet she's constantly upset at her wealthy parents

for helping her out financially?

"Thanks for paying for a lifestyle

"that I, an adult, can in no way afford.

"Mom and dad, I still hate you."

Now, at least part of Hollywood's poor job

at representing class diversity

can be explained by technicalities.

Traditional TV shows and Hollywood movies

generally require a location big enough

to accommodate equipment, lights, and crew.

That's especially true for anything filmed

on a studio set in front of an audience.

And look, I get it,

TV and film is always a little larger than life.

Everyone likes something pretty to look at.

But, the problem isn't one particular show,

it's that, in aggregate, we're misrepresenting

what lower income life is like,

and it wasn't even always the case.

Shows like The Honeymooners or All in the Family

not only tackled issues regarding class and income,

but took place in living rooms that actually looked like

they belong to Americans who worked for a living.

And, money issues were often major plot points

that came up frequently.

Even into the '90s, things were a little better.

On Roseanne, both parents struggled

to hold down a job amid a recession.

They dressed, ate, and lived like people

with real world costs.

Fast forward to today,

and we've got sitcoms like 2 Broke Girls,

where broke apparently means you could work as a waitress,

while owning a horse, affording a giant apartment,

and working toward your dream of cupcake shop.

And sure, it's an absurd comedy

that sometimes satirizes privilege,

but it also speaks to our shifting ideas

of what qualifies as broke.

And, if you haven't left a comment already by now,

you're probably thinking,

"It's just TV, who cares?"

Well, false depictions

of what middle or working class people look like

can actually have an impact on our own self perception,

as well as our perception of people

living in poverty or working class conditions.

This impact starts at an early age.

A 2016 study from Duke University shows that

children's movies overwhelmingly mischaracterize

poverty and class struggle.

Out of 67 main characters surveyed,

only 16% would qualify as working class,

and only 4% would be considered poor.

The same research says that by age 12,

children have already developed concrete ideas

about class difference, such as the misguided ideas

that poor people are inherently lazy,

or rich people are inherently smarter.

Very not true, yeah, I've met some rich people.

This is especially why

our depictions of money problems matter.

When poverty or working-class lifestyles

are shown exclusively as a personal failure,

we start to imagine financial stability

as only a reflection of your character.

Working class shlubs

like Homer on The Simpsons, or Doug on the King of Queens,

are often depicted as lazy man,

complacent with their class status.

It's easier for us

to accept their supposed failures, because

"They deserve it, they simply haven't worked hard enough

"or don't want to."

Except that class mobility has been falling for decades,

and systemic factors like wage stagnation,

a globally competitive workforce,

and the rising cost of college,

affect the finances of millions of Americans.

It's easier and less scary

to stereotype working class people as lazy,

uninterested in education, or careless with money.

This casual stereotype reflects another social belief

that can impact young people for life.

As early as age five, research shows that

living in a low income household can become

a major cause of stress, shame,

and other social or emotional problems.

Conversely, children from wealthy households

who don't achieve the kind of academic or social success

that's expected of their class status

can also experience shame or anxiety.

And look, not every show needs to tackle the truth

behind class division and economic inequality,

but when almost 63% of Americans say

they're one paycheck away from living in poverty,

there's less dividing the Haves and the Have Nots

in this country then we'd like to think.

We do a disservice to individuals

experiencing financial hardship,

when we reduce their real life struggle to a stereotype.

- Thanks, Gabe.

For better or worse,

media plays a role in how we understand class and poverty,

but that work also has to continue

in everyday conversations.

Talking about money issues shouldn't be taboo,

because we can't fix a problem

if we don't acknowledge it exists.

Special thanks to Gabe Gonzalez for helping out this week.

Thanks for watching, we'll see you next time

01- DIY- AVR Projects- Seven Segment Digital Clock Making || Multiplexing Tutorial - Duration: 21:47.

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the channel.

If you have been following our AVR microcontroller tutorial series then you would know that we

have completed the part on interfacing LEDs and Seven Segment Displays.

Therefore we decided to make a small project using seven segment displays and whatever

we have learned ,up until now.

Now this is another series that we have started where we will be discussing various do it

yourself projects and we will run it in parallel with our AVR series.

So feel free to follow through it.

As you can see here, this is a Seven Segment Digital watch, and in this video I will guide

you on how to build it for yourself.

Now keep in mind that we have not yet covered advanced concepts such as timers and counters

as well as interfacing Real Time Clock modules in our AVR series.

So this is going to be a basic project utilizing whatever we have learned so far and hence

it will not be much accurate in time keeping...but you can always come back to it later once

those concepts have been covered and improve upon it.

Before we start let me again remind you guys that if you like our videos and want to support

us then feel free to visit our website at www.roboelements.com We are providing all

types of electronics components, boards, sensors and modules at affordable prices.

We deliver throughout India and your support there will help us in creating more tutorial

series like this.

Now without further ado let's get into it.

This is the internal circuit diagram of a seven segment display and as I mentioned in

my previous video on this topic, we have two types of displays available commercially,

they are the common cathode and the common anode types.

Now, if you have not watched my previous video on interfacing seven segment displays yet

then I highly recommend you do so fist and then come back here as it will be difficult

to understand this project without knowing the basic concepts first.

The video link should be in the description box as well as in the cards on the right top

most side of your screen.

Now in our project I am going to use six common anode type displays....let me bring the circuit

diagram in front of the camera first....

Yes so we have six seven segment displays here and if you look carefully they are not

all aligned in the same manner.

What I mean is the first one here form the left is aligned as it should be but the second

one if you look carefully is kept inverted...the third one then is again in normal alignment

while the fourth one is inverted....fifth one is normal and lastly the sixth one is

inverted again.

I have done this so that I can get a pattern of dots like this here and here....I want

this to separate my hours minuets and seconds in the clock.

So in the final product you see these two pairs of dots separating the hours minutes

and seconds and also it looks kinda good.

Coming back to the circuit then we need to connect three of the seven segment displays

in reverse order and that will change some things.

So this pin here which used to be d before is now a...beside it the e pin is now the

b pin controlling this LED...down below the f pin is now the new c pin and to the left....the

old a pin is now the d pin...then this is the new e pin.

Up above...the old c pin is the new f pin and...the h and the g pin will remain the

same as it was before.

So lets name the pins here in their proper order in this circuit too...and done in a

flash with the magic of editing.

Now this is our new circuit with three displays that are in the reverse order...and the other

three in the same order as before.

We now need to connect these segments with the microcontroller.

If you remember in the previous video I had connected PORTA of the microcontroller with

one seven segment.

I was using the complete PORT to drive one seven segment display....so here comes a problem....we

have six seven segment displays and our microcontroller ATmega16 has only four PORTS available.

What to do then....Therefore I will use multiplexing here to drive all the displays using one port

only.

Multiplexing is a way of sending multiple signals or streams of information over a communications

link at the same time in the form of a single, complex signal.

To do that we need to first connect the circuit and I am going to do that by connecting all

the pins of same type with each other.

What I mean is connect all the a pins with each other....all the b pins with each other

and so on.

Here in this circuit I have only connected the a and b pins because the drawing will

get messy and unreadable if I connect all the pins.

For a more detailed circuit diagram visit our blog at www.roboelements.com/tutorials.

So here after interconnecting all the same pins of the six displays we need to connect

them with PORTA.

The order here is again the same as it was in the previous video.

We will connect 0th pin of PORTA with all the a pins of the six displays, 1st pin with

the b pins of all the displays and so on.

Now as you can see I have connected all the six displays to a single PORTA.

So if I now give any value to the PORTA the same will be reflected on all of the displays.

But that is not our end goal.

We need each display to act independently and not mimic the values shown in the other

display.

This can be achieved by providing control lines.

I am going to use PORTB for that....eh....before that let me first number these displays...so

the VCC pin of the first display is lets say 1 then the second display is 2...and this

one is 3 and so on...

Now I will connect these VCC pins with the pins of PORTB in the following manner.

What this means is that we will connect the 0th pin of PORTB with the VCC pin of the first

seven segment dispaly and...the 1st pin of PORTB with the VCC pin of the second display..and

so on until the 5th pin of the PORTB with the VCC pin of the sixth seven segment display.

This is how as you might have already realized, how we will control each display.

PORTA will be used to provide the value which is common to all the displays but PORTB will

decide which display to turn on and display the actual value.

PORTB is our control line.

You will get a better idea of this concept once we start programming.

We now need to make this circuit on the breadboard and as you can see I already have the microcontroller

here at the lower end of the board.

Now keep in mind that the seven segment displays need to be connected in reverse order to each

other...so if I have the first one here like this then the next segment should be connected

in the reverse order...and again the next segment in the normal way and so on.

The other thing that I forgot to mention is that while connecting the same pins in this

circuit do not connect the dot pins ie pin h in this segment and this segment here as

we will not be using them.

Again refer to the proper circuit diagram in the blog.

Now quickly lets create

the circuit.

Done with the circuit lets move on to the programming part.

So if you remember this is the program that we wrote for the previous video on seven segment

and we will modify this...as usual there are header files at the beginning and our entire

code resides inside the main function.

Now we had created an integer array with the name value to store the values needed to be

displayed on the displays.

Lets take the first value here which is 0xC0....and the binary equivalent of this number is 0b11000000.

If you again remember in our previous video we had decided to not use the dot in our counter.

But we need the dot here so we will have to change all of these values....so lets remove

all of them first.

We need to change this value to 0 in order to turn on the Dot as I mentioned in my previous

video...so the new hexadecimal equivalent value is 0x40.

You can calculate the rest of the values using the table I had created in my previous video

yourself...if you want.

For the sake of time I will just write all the new values....and yes these are our new

values.

Let me remove this comment now.

Now we will need a few more variables...actually since there are six seven segment displays

so we will need six.

Lets declare them.

I will name the first variable as hour1 and initialize it with the value 0.

The next one is hour2.

These two together will represent the hours in our project.

Next up is the min1 and min2 and as before we will assign them with the value 0.

These two will represent the minutes in the project.

Lastly we have sec1 and sec2 and these two will represent the seconds.

These six variables are what we will use to store the time and keep track of it.

After this down below we have the DDR register to set PORTA as an output PORT.

In this project we are also using the PORTB so we need to set Data Direction for it too.

Therefore I will write DDRB and give it a value 0xFF.

Again here too we will use the PORTB as control lines for the segments, hence this port too

needs to be in output mode.

Now in the while loop we don't need this part so lets clear it.

To create the clock I will use these variables along with nested for loops.

A nested for loop is a for loop inside a for loop.

Let me write the code first and then I will explain.

for...and the variable will be hour1 and since I have already given it a value up above...I

don't need to give it here.

This variable hour1 will represent the first seven segment which will show the first value

of the hour and logically speaking the first hour cannot be more than two.

Since the maximum the hour segments will count too is 23...therefore hour1 should be less

than 3 at all times....and then the increment operator.

Inside this loop we will again have a for loop for the second part of the hour...which

is represented by the hour2 variable....as I said before hour can never be more than

23 so hour2 will always be less than 4.

Inside this loop we have further nested loops and this one is for the first part of the

minutes section....which is represented by min1 above.

Now the maximum the minutes can count to...is 59...as after that they need to reset to 00....so

the first part of minute will always be less than 6....again inside this we have a nested

loop for the second part of the minutes...which will always be less than 10...as the max value

is 9.

Further we have two more loops for the seconds section....the first loop will have the variable

sec1 and it again will be less than 6....and the last loop will have sec2 and this will

not be greater than 10.

Now we need to give the actual values to the displays....but first we need to decide which

seven segment to use as all the displays are connected to each other.

Lets first turn on the first display form the left

which will show the second value of the second...so I will write PORTB = 0b00000001....and this

will turn on the right most seven segment.

Now after turning it on lets give it a value...so I will write PORTA = value and inside the

brackets I will give sec2 as the parameter as this segment is for the second part of

seconds which is denoted by sec2 variable.

We now need a delay to allow the segment to get this value and for the sake of accuracy

I will give the least amount possible...so I will give a value of 1 millisecond.

Now we need to repeat these there steps five more times for the five more seven segments....so

I will copy these lines and paste it five more times....ok

Here we will turn the first segment off and turn on the next segment....so I will change

this value back to 0 and this will be 1....let me comment it too...turning on the second

seven segment from the right.....and the value here will be changed to sec1...similarly we

will need to change the values for all the other cases.

Let me do that quickly....

Ok so as you can see, PORTA is given all the values...ie sec2, sec1, min2, min1, hour2,

hour1...respectively one by one with a delay of 1 millisecond.

In the last for loop we need to make sure that these values change after 1 sec as the

clock needs to change values every second.

In these lines we have 6 delay statements with a delay of 1 milliseconds each...so all

of these lines inside the last for loop will take approx 6 milliseconds to execute.

So 1 second which is 1000 milliseconds divided by 6 gives approx 167.

What this means if we run all these line 167 times then that will be approximately equal

to 1 sec.

I will then declare a new variable lets say count and assign it 0.

Now inside a while loop with the condition count is less than or equal to 167 I will

copy and paste all of this code.

So this code inside the while loop will execute 167 times...we need to increase the counter....and

count will keep track of that.

Executing 167 times will take 1 second after which the first for loop will end and the

vales will be updated.

And...I am forgetting something here....eh....yes...so after each for loop ends the variable in that

loop needs to be reset to zero...as the clock should in practical reset itself...what I

mean is after counting to 59 the clock should reset back to 0 and start again...therefore

after each loop I will assign the variables back to zero.

So this is it...I think our program is complete...let us then save the file...I will create a new

folder...and name it lets say diy avr projects...and another folder inside it...lets say seven

segment clock....and name the file her lets say seven.c

Now you will need the makefile as mentioned in our previous videos...the link to the file

should be in the description box.

I already have it so I will copy and paste into this folder.

Open the makefile in the winavr environment and make sure that the target name is the

file name without extension...so it is seven here...and CPU speed is 1 million as well

as mcu type is atmega16.

Save this file...and lets now got to tools and make all to compile the code.

So we encountered some errors...and ok we have a misspelled word here...this should

be hour2.

Lets try agian.

Now we have no errors but some warnings...and it says...statement with no effect....ok so

this warning is due to the fact that we have not initialized the variables inside the for

loops.

We do nor need to worry about them.

So let us go on with programming...go to tools and press program.

Now as you can see the clock here starts form 0 and it is counting up.

We can also set our own time as per our choice....so lets go back to the program...and we want

the time to be 10: 45.

So in hour1 i will write 1 and in hour 2 I will write 0...in min1 I will write 4 and

in min2 I will write 5...the rest should remain the same.

Recompile the whole code again and program the controller.

As you can see the new time has been set and the clock is working fine.

As I mentioned in the start of the video this is a rudimentary design using the concepts

we have learned so far so this clock is prone to error.

You will notice after a few hours that it either starts to loose or gain time.

But that problem can be easily solved once we have learned some advanced concepts.

That's it for this video...thank you all for watching it....please share and like this

video if you liked it and don't forget to subscribe to the channel if you want to see

more projects like this.

Bye for now and I will see you all in the next one.

Convergence: Future of Urban Mobility Panel | Part 2 | Zipcar - Duration: 12:19.

- Perhaps you could say a couple words just about

you know, what you do in your company or what your company

does or what you do at the city as we go through this,

but we have, we're gonna start with kind of a big picture

question about just what you think the number one

biggest transportation challenge is facing cities.

So, let's get started with that and

however you want--

- You want me to start?

- Sure, yeah absolutely.

- Great, well I'm Tracy, I was just here,

President of Zipcar.

I think the biggest challenge that we see

is really around, it's sort of,

it's growth, right?

And this growth of urbanization.

The city's getting more congested,

more people, and for I think the stat is for,

in council there's about 70% have only personal vehicle,

and when you think about how do

you accommodate that growth,

and the simple answer is,

oh we just add more parking, add more car plates,

expand our highways and so on and so forth,

but I think for the long term view is not

is not very sustainable,

as we know, so that's why we're big advocates

of sharing and putting driving

more car sharing or any type of sharing,

mobility, service will be I think

a solution, but to your points

there's other, sort of that how

is that ecosystem work together,

that's still a challenge though.

- So I'm Chris, I co-chair the Mayor's office

at Euro Mechanics, we're an R + D lab

kind of based inside the city.

We work on a lot of transporations,

state related projects.

Growth is gonna be my answer,

so I'm gonna have to say three different things now.

So I'll tie it back to the city recently

through a different planning process

called Go Boston in 2030,

so thinking about our future over the

next 15 years and the three things

that came out of that were

safety and access and reliability.

Sort of three big targets that people

were sort of concerned with.

So how do we make our streets safer?

How do we make our transportation system

both more accessible and more reliable?

And just kind of three numbers that tie to that,

for me, the first is 22,

so 22 people were killed on our streets last year.

Another 4500 plus people were injured in crashes.

17.9, this is a hard number to remember,

but it is the difference between

our high income and low income earners

in the City of Austin, so the top 1%

make 17.9 times more than the bottom 20%.

So growing inequality in cities is

a huge burden, not just on housing

but on transportation and what people are spending

out of their wallet on transportation costs.

And the last one is about growth,

so Austin is projected to be 724000 people by 2030.

For us it's another 50,000.

Right now we're in the highest pace of growth

that we've been in the past 60 years.

And we can't actually accommodate all those people

to get into a car and drive somewhere,

so we need to be thinking about shareability,

thinking about public transit,

thinking about walking and hiking.

- All right.

I was not gonna say growth.

(laughs)

It's a little easier.

- You can say apps.

(laughs)

- Yeah, Tyler George, general manager of Lyft

in New England, I think most of you

probably know what Lyft does.

So I won't get into that but

I'll get into my biggest problem which

I think is actually, this is kind of cheating maybe,

so it's so broad, it's infrastructure.

Boston, where I've lived pretty much my whole life

is still really a city that was built for

horses and wagons, and what way someone

had the foresight to dig some tunnels

and put some trains in, that was popular.

But even the last five years,

you look at it, there's no such thing is Lyft

five years ago, there was no smart phones

10 year ago, and (mumbles) 15 years ago.

We're still dealing with the same infrastructure

for the most part that we had here in Boston

So you look at things like the transit system

which is pretty big but underfunded,

getting a little long in the tooth,

hard to find money to improve it,

and just do basic maintenance.

Things like housing,

so you'd love to have really dense developments

near transit hubs, hard to do.

You don't wanna just tear down old neighborhoods.

And then the infrastructure on streets

is a big one obviously for companies

like Zipcar, still left side

and the right side, almost every street

in Boston and around it are parked cars,

and almost every mode that we're moving toward

doesn't require parked cars in the same way.

But does require road space,

and that's gonna be a very hard thing to change.

- All right hi, Gretchen Efkin,

I lead the business team Utonomy,

we build autonomous software systems

for cars.

I think congestion is one of the things

I think the most about

because the initial ripple effect

of reduced productivity for the amount

of time that we spend commuting,

and then secondarily, distracted driving

as a result of slow commute times.

I commute every day and every day

I see people texting.

My favourite was the guy that was balancing

an iPad, reading the newspaper on his driving leg,

while driving, and so I think about

this every day, like the effects of

congestion means you're moving slowly,

which means you get distracted and

people wanna save time, get a jump start on work

and then that causes more accidents

and leads to catastrophic events,

and so I think about congestion

as one of the key things (mumbles).

- How do you see Boston stacking up

against other cities in the US,

and kind of how do you think it can

meet some of these challenges without

destroying the positive part of the infrastructure

that it has.

- Yeah, that's a great question.

I think one of the things that's really exciting

about Boston is just the breadth of

innovation when it comes to transportation here,

I think there's an incredible community.

When Zipcar was founded, came out of

this ecosystem, there are tremendous number

of transportation innovation companies

here in Boston that are really pushing the envelope

and encouraging people to have that

multi-mobile shift in their mindset,

of being able to live a car light

or a car free lifestyle,

so I think that's something that

Boston really stands out in terms of

the top tier Universities, in terms

of population, for sure.

Second part of your question was around

how do we continue to address the challenges

while maintaining what's special about Boston.

That's where we can really leverage

some of the innovations that we're talking about.

The more people feel like they can

go car light or go car free,

the more people you can plow through the system,

and so I think it's a two part,

having the multi-mobile available,

but also the societal mindset shift

toward giving up a car, and if that's generationally,

it'll be easier now that it's ever been.

- Yeah, I'd agree with all that,

and maybe taking it in a different direction.

I think that

Boston actually has really good city governance,

and the region as a whole actually does.

There's pretty noble exceptions.

Kidding.

(audience laughs)

It's actually true,

I've worked with a car for a while,

I've never dealt with governance of any stripe,

and I had certain stereotypes about them.

And in this role I'm in,

just a different sort of role,

and I'll meet people like Chris,

and people at the NMBTA,

people in the state government,

and I have been so impressed with the quality of

people at sort of every level.

And I've worked with a lot of people at Lyft who

work with all sorts of cities across the country,

and I know that that's not something

to take for granted,

not every city is run so well.

You all probably thinking of a city

or two right now that's not Boston that

is sort of known for not being

as top of these things as Boston,

and that's a huge advantage for us.

It plays out in a couple of ways.

I mean, you think about autonomous vehicles,

this area has been permitted for

autonomous pilots, that's super cool,

it's the city getting ahead of what

we know is gonna be a big part of the future here.

You look at in the transit agency NMBTA

has been really forward thinking,

first agency in the country to partner with

Lyft or a TNC or paired transit,

which is a segment of transportation

that could use a lot of work.

Service levels are notoriously bad,

it's very expensive.

There's a million different pilots

like that going on, really interesting

things happening at every level

of local government, so that's very cool.

- I'm gonna have a totally biased answer

because I think Boston is probably

the best city in the country,

but I'm also paid to say that.

(audience laughs)

You know, we're incredibly lucky

to have a great ecosystem.

We have a partnership with Utonomy,

we have some stuff with Lyft,

we've partnership with Zip Car.

Having those entrepreneurship,

and innovative companies in Boston,

it helps us actually deliver better

service to people and deliver

against the goals that we're being

held accountable to by the public.

We also have great advocacy partners,

so Walk Boston and Livable Streets

do a great job of sort of

voicing concerns from constituencies

to the city, so that we make sure that

we sort of hold true to what makes Boston

a really unique sort of environment

to live in and get around in.

When I think about how we stack up

against other cities sort of nationally,

I think we do pretty well.

If you ever travel somewhere that doesn't

have a rail system or a good transit system,

whereas a 20 minute headways on buses,

it's pretty frustrating,

and you realize how good you have it.

And if you go to a city

that excels in this

in Europe or if you're taking buses in Cortiba,

or if you're on a train in Tokyo,

all these places, you're like,

we have a really long way to go

before we can do that.

But when I look domestically,

at Boston, more than half the people in this city

get to work every day, in something

other than a single occupancy vehicle.

Which is pretty impressive when

USDOT gave away 50 million dollars to Columbus

and you look at their road splits,

you can understand that they needed some help there.

It's like 80% of the people are driving to work.

So we didn't have the same scale of challenge.

I think what was articulated in the Go Boston plan,

and what we've seen in Imagine Boston

is walking, transit and biking

are huge priorities for livability in the city.

So I think we're wrestling with

what Tyler referenced earlier around parking,

there's, we've gotta paired on ship,

cargo ship, and how we utilize the curb space,

but we're maybe five years into

battling 100 years of planning in cities

that were around an automobile.

- I think I'll echo some of what Tyler said

about Boston being a friendly city,

and it's really I think

that a big support of Zipcar

with Go Boston and some of those initiatives

that really helped us grow this city,

and I think having personally lived in

New York, London and Boston,

I think I agree with Chris that

depending on how you rank,

Boston probably still has a long ways to go

when you think about, when I was living in London,

the congestion charge was introduced

which made a reasonable impact on traffic in

central London and that was

I think over 10 years ago when that

was introduced, and then people (mumbles)

on Oslo, that is banning

vehicle traffic in the downtown core,

and that's also, by 2019,

which is right around the corner,

so I think some of the European cities

are nice benchmark in terms of how

progressive they are on really making a dent

on our congestion, and sustainability.
