-And you're on tour again? -We have eight shows left.
-Wow. Yeah, so we've been really busy
this summer. It's been a great,
special summer for us. -It's not like a little tour
where you're just go running through these little theaters.
These are, like, stadiums and -- look at this.
-A lot of energy right there. [ Cheers and applause ]
-That's 50,000.
Do you get nervous still when you do that?
-I get anxious. -You do.
-I don't get nervous that I'm going to forget the words,
because I've forgotten the words.
You know, I don't get nervous that I'm going to fall on stage
or fall off stage because I've fell on stage
and I've fallen off stage. -You have.
[ Light laughter ] -So I don't get nervous
in that sense, I get anxious to do what I do.
It's all like sports. Like you ask a football player
if they get nervous, and they say, "No,
I just get anxious to do it." And that's how I feel
about going up there. That energy is beautiful, man.
-Gets your heart beating and you're like, "Yeah, let's do it.
And we'll put on a good show." -Yeah.
To feel that, it's so -- it's just a special connection.
-Because you're thinking back to your teens when you were
thinking about football stadiums, there was this guy?
Number seven right there.
-Where did you find this? -Number seven right there.
He was thinking about -- [ Cheers and applause ]
-And that's my road manager, David Farmer.
Like, we went to high school together.
-Wait, do you still know this guy?
-Yeah, he runs my rum company now and he's my road manager
on the road. -Is that right?
-But if you noticed something about that picture, see, I was
a pretty small football player, and I had to have --
I always felt like the bigger the shoulder pads,
the bigger that I looked.
[ Laughter ] -Yeah, that's smart.
-So that was my mentality with those shoulder pads.
-You've got a little -- you've got a little kind of fulfillment
of your dreams. -Well, Sean Payton is one of
my best friends in the world, and he let me play with
the Saints one day, he let me try out with the Saints.
And we really made the media angry one day
'cause he introduced me, he called the media up,
you know, together, and he had some big announcement to make.
And then, he announced me as the new wide receiver for
the New Orleans Saints. [ Light laughter ]
And they were a little aggravated to say the least.
-To say the least. -They thought it was something
that, you know, was going to matter.
[ Laughter ]
-No, but he thought you'd have fun and then he came out
and the team dug it, right?
-Well, they were going to see if -- Sean asked me if I wanted
to catch a punt, like a real punt.
And it was a time of year that it is now where they have
two practices a day.
And he told the team, "If Kenny catches the punt,
you guys don't have to practice later on today."
But he goes, "If he misses it, you guys have to practice --
not only do you have to practice today, but you got to practice
again tomorrow."
So it added a little bit of urgency, and, you know,
it was a very anxiety moment for me.
[ Light laughter ] So I got Reggy Bush
and Drew Brees and everybody coming up and going,
"You better catch this punt." [ Laughter ]
So, I caught it.
Basically, I mean, I bobbled it and caught it.
-You caught it? -I caught it.
-That's got to be the best moment!
-So, yeah. I didn't have those big
shoulder pads on when I did it. -No, you didn't, no.
-Let's talk about this. What is this project?
And I know the -- -well, after Hurricane irma
last year, and Maria, you know, I lived a lot of my adult life
in the Virgin Islands, and I have this beautiful --
I call them my island family --
a circle of friends that have meant a lot to me.
And after the storms, there was a lot of people down there --
the people of the island, it was just a really devastated place.
And it would have been easy to make a record about that
devastation and destruction.
But I made a record about the healing process.
I've always felt, like, that music is the most healing thing
we have in our lives, no matter what kind of music
you listen to. I think it's the most --
Music heals us and moves us forward more than anything
that we have in our lives, really.
And that's basically what this record is about.
You know, it's about the healing process
and moving forward maybe with a strength that you didn't know
you had. And that's where my mind was
when I made -- I made this whole record in three weeks.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Yeah, it finally came out.
-100%. -All the proceeds go to
my foundation Love for Love City,
which is -- -What is Love for Love City?
-Love City is the nickname for the island of St. John,
the Virgin Islands. And so, I did a song on
the record with Ziggy Marley called "Love for Love City."
And all the proceeds for the record and all of that goes
to help just rebuild the infrastructure
and the human spirit.
-It's cool that you're doing this, buddy.
I think it's really cool. [ Cheers and applause ]
"Songs for the Saints" is the name of the album.
What song are you going to do tonight?
-We're going to do "Get Along." [ Cheers and applause ]
-Oh, yeah. -It's a big record for me
this summer. -That was crazy.
-So yeah, you know, it's the first single off the record
and it was a message that I thought was the most important.
Because we all drown in negativity everyday.
If you look at your phone enough or if you look at your computer
enough or watch enough negativity on TV,
you just drown in it.
And I heard this song about -- and I say this on stage
every night. This songs about taking
negative energy, turning it into positive energy,
and loving everybody.
And that's what the song's about.
[ Cheers and applause ]
-Thank you for doing that. Thank you for doing the track.
We love you, man. -I love you, too.
-Kenny Chesney, everybody!
