The Cu Chi guerrilla
Cu Chi is the alluvial plain located by Sai Gon river.
The tide of Saigon river is gentle.
Cu Chi is the place of shady and fresh gardens
with tropical trees available all year long.
Cu Chi is the place of rubber forests as flat and wide as airstrips.
Cu Chi is only 150 square kilometers
with a weblike system of roads and pipelines.
Cu Chi stretches over route 8, to the North West of Saigon,
which is the headquarter of ARVN.
With its location, topography and nature,
Cu Chi is the place to go when people want to relax.
Cu Chi is the place of nice people and the lively countryside lifestyle.
It's the place of childhood that just want to have a chance to study.
But the cruel American are determined to destroy
this small and gentle Southern land of Vietnam
that is tens thousands miles away from America.
With modern technologies, the phalanx, B-52 airplanes,
chemical poison and poisonous gas,
they want to drill a hole in the Iron Triangle of Southern Vietnam army
to give breath to the Saigon regime that has collapsed 12 times.
Just like crazy monsters, they aim for women and children,
for cows, buffaloes, chickens and ducks.
They aimed for trees and the soil,
for pots, pans and even Buddha statues.
Many productive lands at Cu Chi
were destroyed and turned into deserts like this.
Wiping out everything on the way,
they took to the streets of Cu Chi.
Who are those people?
It's Tan Thi Gan, the girl who lost her father.
She stands strong for her nationalistic and domestic hatred toward ARVN.
She might be small in size but her hatred is huge.
Using only rifles and grenades,
she defeats tens of skilled ARVN attacks everyday.
With several preemptive attacks,
Gan's group passed 118 American soldiers.
It's Pham Van Coi, the brave and cunning leader
who is kind at heart and always overlook heavy gunfire.
He made his own mines to stop enemy's troupes.
He shot down airplanes using only a rifle.
He took the right moment to attack the enemies right in their headquarter.
He alone took down hundreds of American soldiers,
earned 3 medals for
American solder killer, tank and airplane destroyer.
His entire guerrillas earned American soldier killer medals.
It's Ba Mi, the hardworking farmer for all his life.
He worked out his enemy's attack strategy right in the first time being at the battlefield.
He marched scientifically
to set up mines in order to kill enemies.
He killed 16 American soldiers, 3 tanks,
and is awarded the medal for excellent American soldier killer.
It's Vo Thi Mo, the beautiful and thin girl from Nhuan Duc.
She prefers singing to firing, but her determination is huge.
She follows male soldiers everywhere.
Sometimes she used rifles, sometimes mines, she followed enemy's each and every steps.
In the very first battle, she earned the medal of American soldier killer.
With the determination of sticking to their land and villages,
the normal people from Cu Chi
has defeated the massive march of American soldiers
with the simple trap of guerrilla war.
We fight when the enemies come and strengthen our forces when they leave.
Unexploded frag bombs, cannons,
armored tanks and airplanes that were left behind at Cu Chi
were taken to guerrilla's factories.
They became unique weapons that can destroy vehicles and kill thousands of American soldiers.
Following the idea of General Pham Van To,
Cu Chi guerrillas invented
wooden tables attached to frag bombs that served as launching pads.
Unexploded cannons are drilled holes and placed under the launching pads.
Both would be placed on the same slope.
When enemy's vehicles pass by, guerrillas will connect the wires to make an explosion
that send the frag bombs and their launching pads to the target.
Although taking many modern kinds of guns from American soldiers
such as autorifles and M-79 grenade launchers,
Cu Chi guerrillas didn't stop improving their tradition attack strategy.
Spike pitfalls that were once only used to trap wild animals,
now are placed everywhere at Cu Chi to trap American soldiers.
Every house is a combat site. Everyone is a soldier.
That's the ultimate power of Cu Chi guerrillas.
Although they have to coexist with enemy's gunfire,
Cu Chi people refused to leave their land.
They're determined to stick with their homeland to grow crops.
They turned the old saying: "When there's enough food, there's strong army"
into an action slogan: "One hand holds gun, the other holds hoe."
Enemies attack at day, then they work at night
on fields full of bomb and gunfire debris.
Through hardship, they provide enough food for guerrillas to fight the enemy.
The American wanted to burn Cu Chi down, but Cu Chi stood strong.
Couldn't live above the ground, they decided to live under the ground.
Although it gets hot and crowded,
but the free life under the ground is still comfortable.
They can still cook, eat and rest.
They can still study and learn.
They can still work,
greet guests and open market fair right under the ground.
The American wanted to turn Cu Chi into the land of death
but Cu Chi never dies.
With its complex structures and fighting style,
Cu Chi became a massive death trap for American army.
There are combat trenches everywhere.
There are combat sites everywhere.
Deep under the ground, there's a complex and dangerous system of tunnels
altogether to become a military system
that connects neighborhoods, hamlets and villages.
It makes sure guerrillas have their ways in and out to fight and withdraw.
No matter how hard the situation is, they can still take the initiative.
Thanks to this steady military system,
small guerrilla teams with crude weapons
can stop enemies from the outside of their villages.
If the enemies already passed the border, they can follow them with every steps.
They can attack the enemies continuously from days to days.
Sometimes, they show up from under the ground to shoot enemies down.
Sometimes they attack from the back. Sometimes they attack by surprise.
They come, they go. No one knows.
Even the American General had to say:
"We can't see guerrillas anywhere, but they're everywhere."
The underground tunnel system of Cu Chi was praised by western military reporter
as a complex, massive and sophisticated structure
that no architecture in the world can design and build.

who followed the ground troupe number 25 into Cu Chi in 1966 had to admit
that all those who had been to this tunnel system admired the talent, determination
and patience of Vietnam guerrillas.
Hundreds of American soldiers died from gunfire of guerrillas hiding inside the tunnels.
Many others will surely die here too.
Yes, stepping into this battlefield,
no matter which troupes they're from, no matter which strategies they use,
they are all defeated by Cu Chi guerrillas.
Cu Chi guerrillas stand strong
right in front of the gate of Saigon.
Although the war was harsh and intense,
but with strong combat villages,
determination and a winning attitude
Cu Chi people still have their relaxing time everyday.
The sound of gunfire couldn't stop the sound of musical instrument and singing at Cu Chi.
They fight nonstop,
ready to fight back no matter how strong the enemies are
is to keep productive farms, free life
and sweet singing of their homeland.
The sweet sound of singing
urges them to come forward.
The massive march named Cai Bay had failed.
Five days later, the American soldiers attacked Cu Chi.
They stationed at Bac Ha, Dong Du to establish a stronghold system
as launching pad to attack further.
Immediately, by correctly depicted enemy's plot,
that is to attack further.
Cu Chi leaders opened an urgent meeting
to discuss the plan of forming a guerrilla perimeter.
Everybody including men and women from different villages united.
They volunteered to come to guerrilla perimeter.
As a Cu Chi guerrilla,
every sign is a vow to protect the country.
If they die, they will die at the perimeter.
If they live, they will become an American soldier killer.
At the perimeter, facing with enemies,
living under gunfire,
Cu Chi guerrillas didn't give up.
At day, they put mud all over their bodies.
At night, they wore straw to disguise.
They didn't mind the hardship, they only tried to find a way to kill enemies.
The love between soldiers gets stronger through hardship.
Villages' leaders usually send people to the perimeter
to provide food, clean clothes for guerrillas.
With the love of compatriot,
the life of guerrillas was still happy and comfortable.
For good organization and structure,
for solidarity and good strategies,
Cu Chi perimeter took the initiative right from the start.
They fought continuously and came closer to the enemy.
They turned American base
into a death defense base.
By improving their power continuously,
Cu Chi perimeter is not only
a copper wall to protect the Iron Triangle of Southeast Vietnam
but also a steady launching pad for Southern army forces
to attack right into the headquarter of ARVN in Saigon.
