This week we are we talking about apps and whether you need one.

You're watching Marketing Madness, the Blue Fish vlog!

We regularly get inquiries for apps.

Most of these individuals think that having an app means success.

In this video, we are going to talk about why we typically push back a bit.

Before we get too far though, I want to talk to you about the differences between native

apps and web applications.

For the purposes of this video when referring to apps, we're talking about native applications

that reside in Apple's App Store or Google's Google Play.

When creating those types of apps, you have to use code specific to those platforms to

create the app.

And on iOS, once the app is created it has to be put through a verification process.

This is a tedious process that adds time and expense to the creation of the app.

And notice what I just said, you have to create two different versions of your precious, one

for iOS and one for Android.

That said, there are some nice things that you can take advantage of if you're building

a native app that are not available for web apps.

A web app often has a lot of the same feel as a native app.

If you go to Pinterest.com it should look and feel a lot like the Pinterest app.

But web apps live in the browser much like a website.

They harness code that can be used by both iOS and Android.

They are a great way to create an MVP or Minimum Viable Product.

Native applications are great but you have to keep in mind that a user only has so much

storage on their device.

Granted, storage is becoming less and less of an issue but I remember when had the 16

gig iphone.

If I was snapping photos ran out of storage, I immediately looked for applications that

i was not using and deleted them to make more space.

There are a few things that move us from a web app to a native app.

The biggest is budget.

If the budget warrants a set of native apps we'll still be smart about moving forward

but it is important to note that budgets of $10-20k are not going to cut it because not

only do you need to build the apps but you are going to also need a marketing campaign

specific to getting the app adopted by users.

One other item that would push us to suggesting a native app would be the need for push notifications.

That is not something that you want to try and accomplish outside of a native app.

Knowing your goals and specific requirements will be extremely helpful.

I mentioned that native apps are not cheap.

Building them requires wire-framing the various pieces of functionality of the application.

You then you have someone who is highly skilled in a specific programming language that is

in high demand to program the app.

And we mentioned that the verification process takes some time.

Building native apps is a VERY time intensive project.

And then to think that you're also having to develop for both systems?

Just consider if a web app is a viable alternative to get started.

It will allow for a more rapid deployment schedule as well.

One of the main reasons we wanted to record this video is to help you realize there are

options.

Just make sure that you have your ducks in a row before you start going down this path.

It'll save you money in the long run.

We've been hearing that people think blogging is a lost art.

That with so much social media and the various outlets where you can put out content people

wonder if there is any real value to blogging.

We would like to use this video to make the case for blogging.

We believe it should be a staple in your marketing efforts.

The number one reason why you should blog is so that you can communicate your personality

with the people that are reading it.

Through reading your posts, they start to get a feel for who you are, how you operate,

and how you think…

And that's a good thing!

You want to work with people that know your personality and accept you for who you are.

Warts and all...

Another reason that you want to blog is to educate.

When you educate you become an authority on the topic.

By blogging and teaching others, it shows just how in-depth an understanding you have

of a particular topic or subject.

It puts prospects at ease.

The third reason to blog is SEO.

Every additional page that you have on your website is going to be a chance for you to

have additional keywords, meta tags, title tags, and h1 or h2 tags.

All of those go towards Google ranking you higher.

Writing good, creative, and unique content will help you rank for long tail keywords.

So it's really important that you write those articles!

I want to put a bug in your ear and discuss whether you should be blogging or vlogging?

Well surprise, I think you should being doing both.

If we did not believe in video we would not invest the time and energy into doing Marketing

Madness as a weekly vlog.

We have found that video does really well on Facebook and YouTube.

And vlogging works really well on your website especially if you have the video transcribed

so that the text appears along with the video.

This means that you also get the push from Google that we mentioned earlier.

Your content marketing strategy should be well rounded.

People consume content differently.

In previous episodes we've talked about how different platforms have different cultures.

Some people prefer to read and digest consumable blog post, some people like video.

We do both because it fits in with our content distribution strategy.

Tip of the week is to put some type of unique piece of content out every week.

Again, it leverages you as an authority.

If you couldn't guess, teaching is a passion of mine and sharing my knowledge of what I've

been able to gain in this industry is extremely important to me.

It is part of my legacy.

I'd just like to encourage you with one last thought.

For those of you out there that are thinking "Well, I really don't have anything to share…"

The truth is you do.

Sometimes you might just need to research your topic a little bit more before you actually

push it out to your audience.

The cool thing about blogging is that as you're going through that process you're teaching

yourself.

Explaining the Birds and the Bees to Your Child - Duration: 2:29.

Talking to your kids about the birds and the bees can be intimidating. Many of us

did not have those conversations with our parents and schools very widely have

the types of sexual and reproductive health education that they offer. The

biggest point that I want to make is that it doesn't matter if you have the

perfect talk, it just matters that you have the talk. Studies have shown that

adolescents say parents are their biggest influencers in sexual and

reproductive health values and decision making. So now you know that it's very

important that we have these conversations with our kids, but next

we're gonna talk about some tips for how to actually do that. First, be as

comfortable as you can in approaching this topic with your teen. Remember

you're trying to create an environment of openness where your teen can ask you

questions and feel comfortable. The more comfortable you can be, the more relaxed

your teen will be. You might even need to practice what you want to say. Use fewer

words and shorter sentences and remember that timing is everything. Watch for

opportunities that can help you open those conversations with your teens. It

might be something you see on TV together or something that happens in

the news that allows you to bring up those topics. Although it's never too

early to start talking about these topics with your child try, to keep in

mind their age, maturity level, and the amount of information that you give

them. You can follow your child's lead and reveal the right amount of

information based on their questions and interest. Try to have sex positive

conversations. If you only focus on the negative consequences of sex you will

seem pretty out of touch. They already know that it can't be all bad. Do give

your child the facts about how infections can be transmitted sexually,

how to prevent those infections, how people become pregnant, and how to

prevent unplanned pregnancy. Contrary to some popular belief giving your child

the facts about sex does not make them more likely to engage in that behavior.

We all have moments of frustration in trying to communicate with our teens.

They may seem uninterested, like they're not listening to you, or they might just

do what they want anyway, keep trying though. You are teaching your child that

it's okay to have these conversations and that they can come and

talk to you about these things. You can also help connect your teen to resources

where they can learn more accurate information. Your pediatrician can be a

valuable resource as well. If you need additional help you can also contact the

Family Resource Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

They're profiting from advertising on Breitbart,

they're profiting from showing NRA TV,

and they're profiting from spewing pollution into our air

and trying to make delivery as cheap as possible

but not taking accountability for the impacts it's having

on our climate and our kids' future.

The reason Amazon's harmful practices, like streaming NRA TV,

are so important is because Amazon has built an empire

and is trying to take over so many aspects of our lives.

And at its helm is Jeff Bezos,

who has shown a callus disregard to our communities.

He shouldn't be his own boss.

The practice of SumOfUs members

of helping us file shareholder proposals

and getting in front of people

is really making a difference.

We're getting a voice both outside the shareholder meeting,

and inside, and the impact can't be underestimated.

Even though we may no always see it,

I think we're having an impact.

would show the strength of our movement

and serve as a wake up call to Amazon

that the tide has shifted in favor of people and planet.

Let me take you on a weird journey.

Tanacon.

Is that still funny?

Can we still use that as punch line?

Who am I talking to?

After yesterday's 4th of July celebrations in the United States where both literal and

figurative fireworks can happens.

And after a particular randy Canada Day on July 1st, Canada Day is known to be the horniest

of the Northern holidays.

I want to talk about lust, even though it's well past May.

That's for you Broadway fans.

Listen, I have to be honest.

I am crushing on somebody real bad.

I'm beyond thirsty for them, I'm practically parched.

So let's talk about my dating life for a minute, which coincidentally is how long most

of my relationships of have lasted.

But let's talk about that for a minute, discuss what's going on now, and then transition

to you maybe sharing some stories.

My first kiss was with a girl named Sarah.

She was an older woman.

She was in third grade while I was in second.

It was a quick peck on the lips and I basically assumed we were married at that point.

Which is why I ignored her for the rest of the school year.

Because of my self esteem problems and my rising anxiety, I did not have another relationship

until my second year of University.

It was another woman.

I liked her.

She liked me.

But I was 19 years old, stupid, and couldn't communicate my feelings.

The relationship dissolved after 6 weeks.

Then I spiralled into depressions and self sabotage, up until four years ago.

Seeing a therapist definitely boosted my confidence, and helped clarify sort of what I wanted.

So I jumped on tinder.

Which was a terrible idea as it was very flammable.

I got horribly burned.

So I decided to use the app Tinder.

Now everybody has their own horror story about using Tinder but I found some real success

right away.

I went on a few dates.

A couple were serious to last a few weeks.

But ultimately they all fizzled out.

The last one was of my own doing.

And I don't want let myself of the hook for this.

It really was all my fault.

By not explicitly saying whether we were exclusive or not, I ended up … having relations with

two guys who were best friends with one another.

When they discovered they were seeing the exact same person things ended, understandably,

quick.

It was like some very dry wood suddenly caught fire and destroyed everything around it.

I'm sure there's some play on words with the word Tinder there, but I can't find

it.

Which brings us to the present day.

And, to protect the innocent, I don't want to get into too much detail.

At least not yet.

This person is somebody who I've known for a while but only recently have I realized

that I have these feelings for.

And before anybody jumps to conclusions.

No.

It's not Matt Mort.

It's his father.

I just think we have a certain chemistry with each other.

No, it's a friend.

Let's leave it at that.

And what makes it difficult is that I'm awful at picking up signals.

Like, I think they might feel the same way.

I certainly want to believe that.

But I can't be sure.

The worst case scenario is that I let it be known and they are totally not into it and

then things get awkward.

Or the best case scenario is that we get married and we tour around the country in a hippie

van solving mysteries.

It can only really be one of those options.

So I am going to make that move.

Honestly a relationship right now would come at the worst possible time.

But I've been told that many relationships actually do start that way.

It's when you're not really looking for it, that it waltzes into your life.

Or crumps.

Or whatever the correct cool term is nowadays.
