Four members of Thai football team rescued from flooded cave - Duration: 1:52.

Over in Thailand.

After weeks of being trapped in a flooded cave, some of the young soccer team members

finally got to see daylight.

Four out of twelve boys were rescued.

The process involved moving through submerged passageways, a risky option considering they

couldn't swim.

Ro Aram explains further.

Officials believe the operation to rescue the youth football team is not as difficult

as they initially thought.

The acting governor of Chiang Rai province said mild weather and falling water levels

in recent days had created optimal conditions for an underwater evacuation.

But Sunday's extraction process was still risky and complicated.

Cave rescue experts had considered an underwater extraction to be a last resort, especially

as most of the boys can't swim.

Eighteen divers, both local and foreign, guided the four boys to safety, swimming though narrow,

submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday.

The four boys, whose names were not released, were then transported to hospital.

Eight of the boys and their coach remain inside and their extraction was called off on Sunday

night until the next day to give divers time to restock supplies.

….."We will be ready soon, because we will need to redo the laying out of all the air

tanks and all systems along the way again.

We have used everything in the set up that we had today.

The set up team will do their work again once they are ready….."

However, monsoon rain and storms are expected in Chiang Rai over the next few weeks, which

will certainly hamper rescue operations.

Water pumps have drained a significant amount of water out of the cave, but time is still

of the essence.

Officials are hoping to get the remaining nine out within the next four days.

Escalating U.S.-China trade war...impact on Korean chipmakers? - Duration: 2:42.

The trade spat between the U.S. and China is escalating by the day, raising concerns

about its global repercussions.

This is especially so for Korea, a country heavily reliant on exports.

According to our Kim Hye-sung, Seoul's semi-conductor industry could experience some brisk highs,

followed by dangerous lows.

A trade war has begun between the world's two largest economies.

The Trump Administration last Friday started charging duties on 34 billion U.S. dollars

of Chinese imports, and China hit back against the same amount of American goods, including

soybeans and cars.

President Trump is already eyeing another round of tariffs on Chinese goods worth 16

billion dollars, even saying that the final tariff total could top 500 billion.

China's exports to the U.S. are worth only about a quarter of what the U.S. sends the

other way, but experts say Beijing has cards other than tariffs that it can use to retaliate

that could disrupt global supply chains and hurt global trade.

"China could interfere with U.S. supply chains based in China.

For example, shutting down American companies' assembly work by invoking obscure safety rules,

or issuing some kind of a travel ban, just as we saw during the THAAD dispute between

Seoul and Beijing last year."

Last week, Beijing banned U.S. chipmaker Micron Technology from manufacturing and selling

its products in China.

Such a move is of particular concern for Korea.

China and the U.S. are Korea's number one and number two trading partners, and they

account for more than a third of Korea's total exports.

Semiconductors alone accounted for 17 percent of Korea's exports last year, with China being

the number-one buyer.

"In the short run, banning the U.S. company Micron from selling chips in China could give

Korean chipmakers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix an edge, since a competitor is

out of the market.

But if Beijing widens its probe to all foreign chipmakers in the country, and uses that as

justification for its 'Made in China 2025' plan, the ban could ultimately affect Korean

companies and give a boost to Chinese local chipmakers."

As the U.S.-China trade spat escalates, experts say it could further acclelerate Beijing's

Made in China 2025 plan, a development plan which aims to increase the country's semiconductor

self-sufficiency from 10 percent to 70 percent by 2025 through government support.

With the boom in the global semiconductor supercycle possibly nearing its end, and Chinese

authorities launching a probe into foreign manufacturers, Korean chipmakers are on alert.

How typhoons get their names - Duration: 1:36.

Prapiroon, the season's seventh typhoon just passed the Korean peninsula.

Some forecasts show Typhoon Maria could be on its way.

At this point, you maybe wondering how these forces of nature are labelled.

Kim Mok-yeon sheds light on the naming system.

Tropical cyclones are named in order to avoid confusion when communicating with the public

as more than one tropical cyclone can exist at the same time.

The naming of typhoons began in Australia the late 1880s.

Meteorologists back then named typhoons after political figures.

But in 1944 during the Second World War 2, U.S. military forecasters started to name

typhoons after their wives and girlfriends.

From the late 1970's the scope of typhoon names was broadened.

Currently, in the Northwestern Pacific, names are selected sequentially from a list of 140

names submitted by the 14 member states of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee.

Once all the names have been used, the committee uses the names again in the same order.

For such reasons, the recent Typhoon Prapiroon, which has a name submitted by Thailand...

was the second typhoon with that name.

The name 'Prapiroon' was first used in 2000.

Of the 140 names, South Korea has submitted 10 names, including Gaemi, Nari, Jangmi and

Noru, mostly referring to flowers and animals.

Now with the 8th typhoon of the season having been named Maria from the U.S., the next typhoon

of the season will be named Son-Thinh from Vietnam, followed by Ampil from Cambodia.

Trump administration hopes North Korea will take the path of Vietnam and build ties with the U.S. - Duration: 3:05.

After holding talks with officials in North Korea, Mike Pompeo continues his round-the-world

trip.

Over in Hanoi, the top diplomat highlighted, Pyongyang should follow Vietnam's example

-- open up, build a relationship with Washington and prosper.

On his latest visit to the regime though, some experts expressed disappointments.

Lee Ji-won tell us more.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he hopes the United States can one day share

the same level of partnership with North Korea as it does with Vietnam, despite Hanoi's ideological

differences and past conflicts with the U.S.

Speaking Sunday to business executives in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, Pompeo emphasized

how the key to Vietnam's rapid economic growth in the past few decades has been its engagement

with the U.S., and that this could be North Korea's future too.

"In light of the once unimaginable prosperity and partnership we have with Vietnam today,

I have a message for Chairman Kim Jong-un.

President Trump believes your country can replicate this path.

It's yours if you'll seize the moment.

The miracle can be yours, it can be your miracle in North Korea as well."

Just a few days earlier, Secretary Pompeo had met with North Korean officials to follow

up on the summit between the two leaders held in Singapore last month.

Pompeo said that there was progress in almost every aspect of their discussions, but many

experts are skeptical.

They say no significant progress was made, considering that Pompeo wanted agreements

on "final, fully verified denuclearization."

"There were no specific agreements made on the goals Pompeo had set for his third trip

to the North.

Furthermore, North Korea's attitude towards the U.S. also suggests that the talks had

a disappointing outcome.

Pompeo had met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in his two previous visits,... but

not this time."

In fact, Pompeo said he had not anticipated a meeting with Kim Jong-un,... but at Sunday's

press briefing, Bloomberg's Nick Wadhams, who traveled with Pompeo, said that the Secretary's

staff tried hard to make it happen.

According to the expert from the Asan Institute, one of the issues in the talks themselves

was who gives what first in the process of denuclearization.

He pointed to North Korea's statement released on Saturday, which said Pyongyang had hoped

to formally end the Korean War as one of the measures to guarantee the regime's security...

in exchange for dismantling test sites.

But it seems, the expert said, that the U.S. insisted on concrete steps toward denuclearization

before the war is declared over, which Pyongyang called a "gangster-like", unilateral demand.

He and some others, though, have found some reasons for optimism in the outcome of the

talks.

He said that although North Korea did express great disappointment,... it still said it

has "good faith in President Trump", which shows they want the talks to continue.

Daniel, so for today, the keyword for President Moon's itinerary is 'Business' and 'economic

cooperation' between Seoul and New Dehli.

In just about half an hour, President Moon will attend the South Korea-India Business

Forum, where he will meet with business leaders from both countries.

He will likely explain his vision of how South Korea and India can cooperate to strengthen

their economic ties, while encouraging Korean companies to explore the Indian market to

create new growth engines.

Afterwards, the South Korean President is going to make a rare visit to Samsung Electronics'

local factory to mark the recent completion of its construction.

It is the largest cell phone factory in India, and even though President Moon's bilateral

summit with the Indian Prime Minister is scheduled for tomorrow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi

will join the occasion.

Samsung Electronic's vice chairman Lee Jae-yong will also attend.

This will be the first time President Moon will meet with Lee since his inauguration,

let alone attending an event hosted by the South Korean tech giant.

It will also be vice chairman Lee's first time attending a public event since he was

released from jail in February, after serving nearly a year behind bars for his involvement

in the corruption scandal that led to the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye.

The Blue House stressed that President Moon's attendance at the opening ceremony of Samsung's

new plant does not carry any political meaning.

Rather, it said it's simply meant to encourage Korean businesses and demonstrate Seoul's

determination to expand cooperation in investment and the manifacturing business with India.

President Moon will end his second day by meeting with Korean local residents.

Unification Minister says N. Korea and U.S. share the same goal of denuclearization - Duration: 0:44.

North Korea and the U.S. are heading toward the same goal,... as seen through the recently

held working-level talks between the two sides.

That's what Seoul's Unification Minister pointed out at an international conference hosted

by the Research Institute for National Security Affairs on Monday

Cho Myoung-Gyon, believes it will take time for Pyongyang and Washington to narrow their

differences,... but expressed hope the denuclearization process would keep moving forward.

He described last week's inter-Korean basketball games as a good opportunity to meet government

officials from the regime and discuss future plans to implement the Panmunjom declaration.

The minister added, his country will further strengthen relations with the North through

another summit in the fall,... and will work with the international community to establish

peace on the Peninsula.

President Moon discusses political cooperation with India's foreign minister - Duration: 2:20.

The South Korean leader will be kept busier than ever, meeting with the country's top

diplomat, the foreign minister and the president.

Not to mention a visit to a key Samsung facility.

For an in-depth analysis of the policies between the two countries that align, we turn to our

Cha Sang-mi President Moon Jae-in on Monday began the

first official engagement of his state visit to a South Asian country, by meeting with

India's foreign minister Sushima Swaraj, where he discussed his vision for the New Southern

Policy.

Moon said South Korea's ties with India have been developing consistently, since they upgraded

their bilateral relations to a "special strategic partnership" in 2015, and added that he would

like to expand their cooperation.

His plan aims at deepening ties with India and other countries in the region to build

a future partnership for what he dubs the three P's: People, Prosperity, and Peace.

Minister Swaraj welcomed President Moon's visit and said the Indian government also

wanted to strengthen its relationship with South Korea.

And this, an Indian expert says, is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push for

his "Act East Policy."

"If you try to understand India's 'Act East Foreign Policy', ASEAN is actually the center

of India's 'Act East Foreign Policy'.

We have a range of contact with ASEAN, be in connectivity, stronger economic ties, be

it political contacts, and be it also security and defense contact with some of the ASEAN

members.

(cut) And that actually establishes common ground with India's policy and Moon Jae-in's

'New Southern Policy'."

The researcher called President Moon's foreign policy very pragmatic, and said the Moon-Modi

summit will not only pave the way for better South Korea-India cooperations on the bilateral

level, but also on the regional level.

A Korean expert in the field also emphasized that the role of India goes beyond economics.

"India, among the BRICS countries is the only nation that has productivity, marketability

and serves as a base to go out to the Middle East or Africa.

India is a hub for politics, economy, defense and diplomacy."

The expert urged the Korean government to approach India not only as an emerging market,

but to view it as a closer diplomatic partner that can bridge the gap in Asia in many ways.

Repair work for family reunion facilities begins today - Duration: 0:31.

Today, the repair work begins on the facilities to be used for the inter-Korean reunions of

war-torn families.

According to Seoul's Unification Ministry, a 22-member team crossed the inter-Korean

border this morning.

They've arrived at North Korea's Mount Kumgang resort,... where the event will be held from

August 20th to the 26th.

After a three-day on-site inspection of the facility last month,... it was decided the

resort needs renovation.

Officials say the repair work should be completed sometime in mid-August.

UN sanctions decreased N. Korea's trade by 15% and exports by 37.2%: KOTRA - Duration: 0:39.

In 2017, UN sanctions on Pyongyang pulled down the regime's trade by 15 percent compared

to the year before... and its exports by 37-point-2 percent.

According to a report by KOTRA... on trends in North Korean trade, the hermit kingdom

has a trade deficit exceeding 2 billion dollars, which is more than double last year's amount

of 8-hundred-90 million.

The Seoul-based agency explained the losses were due to the UN ban on North Korea's main

exports such as coal, steal, and fish.

The UN Security Council imposed the sanctions last year after the North launched missiles

and carried out its 6th nuclear test.
