Hello everyone today I'm going to be
working on a European larch. I have
worked on this tree before but it grows
and at the top the apex is again very
very strong thats where its dominant and
It needs pruning and bringing it back into
shape so stay tuned.

Welcome back and
this is the European large that I
will be working on
I'll give it a quick 360 so you can
see it from all angles
Firstly I'm going to tidy up the pot
there are a lot of weeds and then I'll start
working on the rest of the tree. The plan
is to remove the dead branches there is
some die back over winter and so remove
these dead branches and then start from
the top and work downwards.
I am removing these weeds with
deep and long roots and
to make sure that the weeds don't
reappear so I'm going to carry on with
this and we'll catch up shortly.
The moss is going up the trunk and that's not a
good idea as the moss tends to be
wet and the bark would be
wet and gradually it'll rot away and the
tree can die, so we're going to remove
this moss gradually.
We have removed the moss from
this area and other sides
of the tree and I next want to work on
these roots they are all tangled up so I
will try and free up at least one of
these I think this needs to come out and
this continues over here so we're going
to work on this part next.
I am now going
to remove this root and we will use this
concave branch cutter, that's
freed itself and I will then attempt to
remove it from this side.
we are now
removing this root from here and
it's starting to look much better and I
will next work on the on this root here
so that's the root that I'm working on
to remove, using scissors very
very gently to cut it through.
We've removed the root which started off
from here and went behind this root here
and then came out and what was all over
the place here, we have removed that.
I am going to use this concave branch cutter
to remove this bit here which I don't
like one little bit it's really sticking
out and it's not doing anything for the
taper of the tree or the surface root
area so this is going to come off with
this concave brush cutter and here we go
I have smooth up the rest of the roots which were
sticking out the root that we've removed
and now it's flush in line that the line of the tree.
Here are the Coons from this year's
growth and I thought I'd show them
before I remove them.
Now I'm going to remove the dead branches
starting with this one here and I'll work my way
around the tree and we will catch up once
I have remove all the dead branches.
We are going to start reducing this apex. I'm
going to do it in two hits, firstly to
about there and then if necessary come
back and reduce it further, which I think
will be necessary, I'm continuing with
the reduction of the apex
and it is coming along quite nicely
and I'll continue with this and we'll
catch up shortly.
One of the basic rules
of bonsai is to remove any branches
which are going inwards and here we have
a branch which is going into the tree
and I'll be removing this.
Here we have a branch which is growing
straight up and that's another rule in
bonsai. Anything which is growing like this,
straight up should be removed.
I am now reducing these branches and I will also
be removing these cones they are taking
up the energy from the tree and we know
the cones are there. The Tree grows cones
so I don't have to prove to anyone
that look my tree has cones
and this will go
to there so that part is done
and we will work round the tree.
The tree has been pruned and I've
now come back to the apex and I'm
reconsidering it.
I'm starting to reduce the apex one more time and we'll
continue with that
My European Lodge which had got out of
scale and proportion, it was out of shape
is being pruned and brought back into
scale and proportion and looks much
better for it. I will give it a quick 360
and that's why we started .
That's all for now and if you haven't subscribed, please

sure that you don't miss anything.
This is Iqbal Khan for mikbonsai
in West London, until the next time
and now for the
afterthought which has been sent in by
Rob Fallon from Scotland. This bear walks
into a bar and says to the bartender give
me a whiskey and..... cola.
and the bartender
says why the long pause ?
The bear shrugged " I don't know I was born with them".
You dig !
